Re: Lion being released tomorrow july 20th

2011-07-20 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I dono that I'd trust that though. I'm going more with what Ricardo said,
simply for the reason, lookat. Maybe mac rumors is a good site over-all,
but let's face the reality of something. they saidIOS 4 would be released
on x date, did it happen, no. they said Lion would be released on the 6th,
did it happen, no. They then re? posted, and said, oh, actually it'll be on
the 14th. Was it? No. OK, is it official that Apple themselves said it
would be today? Yes. But Apple doesn't maintain macrumors.com and frankly,
I don't exactly know who does, so, really, I'm finding their info to not be
the most credible all of the time. Maybe some times, but not all.

Think about this.

They're based in Cupertino California. This means they're in pecific time.

Well, 8:30 in the morning eastern, where I live, would be what... 5:30
there. A business day, generally corporetly at least that doesn't do 3rd
shift, and most corporation offices don't, BTW, is 8 to 5. This means, I'd
say, it's gonna be at least 11 eastern this morning, if not later, if I had
to guess, and probably it won't be even 11/8, as also think of this...

they're gonna have to upload it to the server. I mean the only work around
to this would be if they set up last night the equivalent of a kron job,
which is, BTW, very possible, for it to be uploaded by the time they get the
business day started. So, yeah, here is my look on it:

I'm with most. It'll be here when it gets here, yes, but, more so, is it
possible? to be here by 8:30 ready to download? Yes. It it probabal? No.

Hi,
According to some articles on http://www.macrumors.com, it will be released
probably around 8:30. AM Eastern. I saw that in one of their articles that
apple usually releases major software around that time. I don't know how
true that is, but hey, I'm just telling you what I know, :)

Hi people!

I've been meaning to ask about this for ages now. Back when I first
started using Sephari, I set up bookmarks folders so I could organize
my bookmarks list and keep it from getting unruly. But the folders
I'd created don't show up in my bookmarks menu or bar, nor anywhere
else that I can find for that matter! So, although I can create them
and add things to them, I can't access my folders or the links I've
put in them once they've been created! So, can some one please tell
me what I'm not doing right?

Thanks, as I'd really like to get my bookmarks list tidied up so I can
find stuff more easily!

Re: itunes billing question

2011-07-20 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Well, let's see...

So, if you go to the store menu with vo+M, then vo+right arrow over to it,
if you then go down to view my account, you should then get an html web area
content area you can interact with, and your balance should be in there. If
nothing else, it should show your balance as a button before you reach that
content area.

I guess, chad, when you say you can't see your balance, I'm a little bit
confused. Are you saying you have some credit on your account issued by
either Apple, or by a gift card? That's the only way, aside a promo code,
that your account would have a redeemed balance.

Sorry for the confusion.

I'm just trying to get a better handle on this.

As for writing Apple support, that was definitely not a bad idea.
Hopefully, they'll get back with you within 24 business hours and let you
know what's up.

Take care, and good luck.

Chris.

Re: [M-A] Lion being released tomorrow july 20th

2011-07-20 Thread James Malone
Well in all fairness, the site is what it is, roomers. As for what
time, its here when its here. For us Australian's, that will be
tomorrow, July 21st. I might do some sort of podcast, but someone will
probably beat me to it. I won't be able to try it until at least later
tomorrow afternoon, unless I be a rather sad person and get up early.
However, being in pecific time and all that, I can tell you now that
it would be almost pointless. Besides, what's a few more hours,
really? It will be nice when all this crap about release dates and
such are over. If you look at what Apple seem to have relayed to the
public in regards to June/July, you'd probably think it makes a lot of
sense to be out round this time. I never even try and get excited
about Mac roomers info. Also, a lot, and I mean a lot! Of info was
given out this time round as aposed to all the previous times. Anyway,
that's that.

Look Tell Money Reader for iPhone

2011-07-20 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Excuse the cross-post, but I thought some on bothof these lists would be
interested.

When I downloaded an update for the LookTell money reader this morning, they
said that the price will be going up. so, if anyone wants it and hasn't
purchased it, now would be the time to do so.

this last update incorporates the option of using tones to hear what your bills
are, so that you can identify money privately. They also said that the next
release will feature support for international currencies, though they didn't
specify which ones.

Beto, you might want to pass this on to the aiphone list.
Best,
Donna

Re: lion is now on the app store

2011-07-20 Thread Doug Lawlor
Hi Zack,
I have downloaded the installer and it ran automatically after the download
finished. The problem is I'm not sure where the installer downloaded to either.
I looked in the Applications folder but found nothing that would look like the
Mac OS10 installer. I wanted to burn a DVD but looks like I'm going to have to
download the installer again. My mac just restarted for the second time. It
must be installed or close to it.

Doug

the dock, and it simply says "OS X Lion, downloading".

Hi Doug,
Sadly, the fact is that you need to copy the installer to another location if
you want to make a DVD. Yes, your machine is quite close to being done.

I Have Lion Running; My Impressions

2011-07-20 Thread Teresa Cochran
hi, all,

Just a word before you install an upgrade: make sure you are aware that speech
will stop once you restart the -puter and won't restart till the VO updates are
installed. For me, this took about forty-five minutes, then the -puter
restarted again and VO came up speaking in the login window. Meanwhile, I was
sweating bullets.

I like Alex better; he seems to have been improved somewhat, and I can make his
pitch lower. Mail requires setup as well if you have messages to be migrated.

Just my preliminary impresνs here.

During the install you can turn VO back on and have a full talking installation

Hi SHannon,
When I upgraded, my messages were not lost. They are in IMAP folders, so that
might have something to do with it, but I doubt it. Apple wouldn't force you
to lose messages that way.
Best,
Zack.

Re: lion is now on the app store

2011-07-20 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Brandon,
The voices download from within VoiceOver Utility, on the speech tab. THe way
to do this is to find the default voice popup button and select it, then find
the customize item and select that. From there, you have a table of checkboxes
which you can click to select individual voices.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

Hi Doug,
I'm afraid you need to copy the installer out from the Applications folder
before using it, as it self-destructs after use. You can quit it when it
begins in order to do this, since you already have Lion up and running.
Best,
Zack.

VO Profile Export/Import Location

2011-07-20 Thread Eric Caron
Hi Listers,

It has been some time since my Voice Over acted up. But it just
happened. I would like to import my VO settings from the backup I exported.
Only thing is I can't for the life of me remember where I go to import and
export the VO settings! I looked in the places I thought it would be in the
Universal preferences and Voice Over utility but did not find it. Can someone
point me in the right direction?

trying to download lion?

Hi all,

So I went to the app store, clicked to purchase Lion, and clicked Confirm
Purchase. It now says "Installing Lion", but nothing else is happening. The
downloads folder hasn't opened, and I'm still on the page with the info about
Lion. It's been like this for about five minutes. Is this what should be
happening? If not, any suggestions for next steps?

Hi,

Go to the purchased section of the mac app store. Once there, you'll see the
progress of the Lion download, since the file is quite large. It will take

did in SL with respect to how much you hear when arrowing through the messages
table. I want only the subject line. The rest is so much unwanted chat from my
point of view, slowing the speed with which one can move through a ton of
messages, many of which get deleted without reading, based on their subject
line. Is it still possible to set things up such that the column you're on when
you arrow is the only thing that is read as you move down?

Zackery,

You're exactly correct. It doesn't matter. I have my gmail set via pop3, and
so do I with my RoadRunner, and in both cases, it is fine. I wish that Alex
was a little bit more responsive with typing key echo, but aside that… one
thing I do wonder is in Mail, how do you turn the auto spell correction feature
off? It's driving me to drinking!

Re: lion is now on the app store

2011-07-20 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Mary,
Indeed it is. There is an option to use the classic layout, more or less
identical to the SL way of doing things. This is in the View tab of Mail
preferences. You can use VO to read only subject lines in the same way you do
now.
Best,
Zack.

Re: trying to download lion?

Hi Chris,
THe installer is put in the Applications folder, but after it is used to
install the system it self-destructs. To prevent this you can quit it
initially with cmd-q, and you'll find it in there.
Best,
Zack.

Shannon,
No, everything will remain configured when you get Lion installed. The only
thing you may have to do is click a Continue button to let it perform a small
upgrade to your folders.

Re: I Have Lion Running; My Impressions

2011-07-20 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey all. I'd like to share my impressions of this wonderful OS as well. I like
the new voices, including Samantha. Yes, you heard me, I like the Samantha
voice very much. And I like that I can use it the same way I used Snow Leopard.
I thought that I'd have to reply on the track pad for everything. I've noticed
a couple of bugs though. The first, well I don't know if this is really a bug,
but when starting it up it's a slow startup. Also, when I was reading all of
your messages, I've noticed that once in a while Samantha would kinda talk in a
chipmunk voice here and there. I don't know if this is the case with the other
Nuance voices, but hopefully this bug will be fixed soon. All in all, this is
an awesome OS!

Shawn

What can I do if Lion install fails?

2011-07-20 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

My Lion install appears to have failed. I tried to initialize VO, since an
earlier message said that you could do this. When I did, I was taken into the
VO utilities area, and the only way I could exit it was to restart. So I did.
After a couple of go-rounds with this, my Mac rebooted, but unfortunately it
says it's running 6.8.. I went back to the App store, and it says Lion was
installed. Can anyone help?

Meanwhile, not sure what the earlier posted was talking about, but If you try
and install Lion, DON'T TRY AND START VO!
Best,
Donna

Donna,

Go into your applications folder, and rerun the lion installer again. This
should fix the problem and allow you to try to install.
I hope this helps!

Re: What can I do if Lion install fails?

2011-07-20 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Dona,
I'm not sure what is happening in your case. I didn't have an install failure,
and in fact the whole process was quite seamless. I'd recommend trying again,
after perhaps restoring to a known good backup of 10.6.8 if you have one, just
to be sure. All I did when installing was click Continue a few times and let
the mac restart, after which I could hit cmd-F5 to start VO. The installer was
completely automatic, and the only thing I needed to do was hit restart at the
end to finish things up.
I'm sorry not to be more helpful, but I'm not sure what else to tell you as my
own experience was quite dissimilar.
Best,
Zack.

Hello all,

For those who want to know more about Lion before jumping in, check John
Siracusa's totally thorough review on ArsTechnica:

Obviously, it's from a sighted person's point of view, but still very
interesting.

I have installed Lion here and am trying it out. I'm quite impressed with the
many voices you get and also i think i will like the new mail very much. It's
good that you actually can hear how many mails are in a thread and also that
you hear the first lines of a message, so you know if you want to continue
reading the thread. I also like what i've seen about the new drag & drop.
Tested dredging something from the finder to Mail, and managed to get it where
i wanted it, cool!

A note about setting the preview pane in Mail.

Hello list,
It is now really easy to set the preview pane. All you have to do is to
interact with the horizontal bar just to the right of the message content table
and up arrow till you 0 it out. Then stop interacting. No more need to click to
set it.
Hope this helps someone.

What’s the best way to get to the aps folder? It’s in the doc but it appears
you can’t get there via that shortcut.

initially with cmd-q, and you'll find it in there.

Re: one bad thing I've found in mail

2011-07-20 Thread Marc Workman
VO home/end is not working for me. I've tried interacting in various ways,
but all that happens when I press VO home/end is that focus is moved by a
few messages. If I keep pressing VO home/end, focus stays on that message,
yet if I move up or down once, and then press VO home/end, it again shifts
several messages. I can't determine any pattern explaining why it stops at
the messages it stops at.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Lion, Voice Over and Adium

2011-07-20 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey all. I just found another glitch. When using Voice Over in Lion, if you're
using one of the Nuance voices and you have Adium events spoken aloud to you,
prepare to not receive them. But if you're using Alex, then you have nothing to
fear. I hope this gets fixed soon.

Hi DOnna,
Can you clarify this a bit? I see unread and read message status just fine,
though the status does change because of the way I have my preview pane set up.

Hi Dona,
How are you moving between messages? I'm using the arrow keys alone, without
the VO keys. a bit more verbose, but it isn't too bad. Similarly, I don't

Hi DOnna,
Very odd. WHen you say "status" are we talking about the same thing? For
instance, when I view this conversation if it's closed and there are unread
messages I hear "unread" before opening it.
You might want to switch to the classic layout, which is more or less identical
to the way Mail behaved in SL. THat's in Viewing preferences, if you feel so
inclined.
Best,
Zack.

I have installed Lion here and am trying it out. I'm quite impressed with
the many voices you get and also i think i will like the new mail very much.
It's good that you actually can hear how many mails are in a thread and also
that you hear the first lines of a message, so you know if you want to
continue reading the thread. I also like what i've seen about the new drag &
drop. Tested dredging something from the finder to Mail, and managed to get
it where i wanted it, cool!

I like Alex better; he seems to have been improved somewhat, and I can
make his pitch lower. Mail requires setup as well if you have messages to
be migrated.

Just my preliminary impresνs here.

RE: I Have Lion Running; My Impressions

2011-07-20 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi, There's a customize button at the bottom of that popup menu. That's where
you get the other voices. Be aware, though, that they're quite large to
download.

When you are downloading something, you need to stop interacting with
the html area. You find find a downloads button. There might be a
keyboard shortcut as well, but I am not sure.
