Re: the installation, and uninstallation of applications to the Mac
You are giving me ideas for upcoming podcasts. To install an app: 1. Open the .dmg file with command-O. (Most apps come in dmg files, which are basically virtual cds.) However, If the app comes with the extension .pkg, that's just like the setup.exe file that you've seen a billion times in Windows. Anyway, 2. Copy the name of the app, for example, skype.app, into your applications folder. You can quickly get to the applications folder by typing command-shift-a 3. Press comand-v to paste the app. And there you have it. 4. Go to the desktop, and you will see somewhere the name of the virtual disk. eject it with command-E. As far as blogging software, I would recommend marsedit. You can google for it. It's not very expensive at all, easy to use, and works great with VO. And go ahead and install Skype. It has an interface similar to ITunes. HTH Jes On May 5, 2011, at 12:02 AM, ShamelessFanGirl wrote: > Hi all, > > Subject covers it really. If you download apps from the Apple App Store, the apps are automatically installed into your Applications folder. To get an email address from the header, interact with the message header, press option + shift, and use the arrow keys, this will let you move by word and select the word at the same time, press command + c to copy to your clipboard. RE: statement about microsoft's accessibility on the mac
It might help to mention that Apple has developed an API dedicated to accessibility for all to take advantage of and that it's up to Microsoft to learn and implement it. Tony Hernandez http://dutyofman.net/ Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. You can, if you have a version older than 2.43. But the internal updates don't go past 2.43. Yoru is up to 2.46. 2.44 and above can only be gotten via the app store, unless you download the app from my site or somewhere else. The update system for Yoru only works via Apple now. Re: Campaign to get an accessible Microsoft Office for the Mac
Hi all just want to give my 3 cents. This is a good idea and I think it is worth a shot you never no even with a multi bilion dollar company like microsoft. It is important however to consider the actual programming of the software. Microsoft office is written using the C++ language which is microsofts own language developed by them. Apples main programming language is Coco and the other older one is Carbon. The magic of voiceover lies in Coco, if any software is developed using Coco it's accessible using voiceover or mostly ment to be anyway and this is why some 3rd party developers can make applications accessible without even realising as long as they properly use the Coco code. Microsoft office as said, is written in C++. Ok so mac OS can read c++ applications modified a little and this is why office works on mac but office for mac is still a c++ application modified to work on mac. In order to make it accessible it has to be written from the ground up using Coco and this is why I don't think microsoft will consider making office accessible. It will cost them a lot of time and money and for what? For them it is firstly Apple which is the opposition and secondly disabled mac users is only a small drop of water in their ocian of office users. I think before developing office from scratch using Coco they would rather invest money in accessibility on windows in order to try draw more disabled users to their software. Basically they have got us by the short and curlies, we are mac users, we want to use office but can't, and they know it. But as I said it is still worth a try we'll never know before we try, maybe they surprise us so I say give it a go... Re: Campaign to get an accessible Microsoft Office for the Mac
Office for Mac is still 32 bit, and still carbon. They wanted to concentrate on compatibility with the Windows sister suite before adopting the Cocoa framework. Apparently the next release will implement Cocoa so Office can take advantage of 64 bit. Outlook was rewritten (previously known as Entourage) in cocoa, including the ribbon. However, this does not guarantee accessibility, I am assuming Microsoft are using some customs APis here. On 5 May 2011, at 18:46, Nickus de Vos wrote: > Hi all just want to give my 3 cents. Aren't there bindings for C++ to work with Cocoa objects? IF so, isn't it possible to use the accessibility API? I'm not an expert so maybe you're more rite than I am but I know for a fact that the core of office is still C++ and in order for it to be accessible it has to be Coco from the bottom up. You are all fantastic, I cannot express that enough, and indeed, those instructions were absolute perfection. :) Spent today playing with Safari a little more, downloaded and installed Skype, and have played around the app store a bit. Thanks for your patient instruction; this is what makes the Mac community the amazing place that it is to be IMHO. Thanks again guys, and as always, y'all rock unabashedly. Re: the installation, and uninstallation of applications to the Mac
Hi Shameless, Can't improve on Jes's excellent description of app installation, but in terms of pulling an email address from a header, there are other ways to skin the cat. In fact I seldom interact with anything in e-mail. Instead, I went into vo utility (VO-f8) -> navigation and unchecked the box labeled: "Automatically interact when using tab key". This way I can arrow through folders and messages, and when I am in a message header and press tab vo will usually automatically read the preview pane text when it comes into focus. In order to skim a message with the track pad and/or open links by performing the default action (vo-spaceBar or double tap the trackpad) one does need to interact. When I want to pull an email address I press enter from the either the preview pane or message list, back tab to the header and then hit option-right arrow once or twice. When voiceOver reads the email address I press vo-shift-c to copy the last spoken text to the clipboard. You can then use command-v to paste it into your outgoing message. Personally I don't value podcasts very much. the conventional wisdom though is that everyone will tell you to listen to all the ones that Mike A put out on blindCoolTech. I would take any podcast with a grain of salt though because there are often so many ways to skin the cat. For example I recall one podcast suggesting that voiceOver users need to use a setting in appleMail such that all messages in a thread open in separate windows. That approach may work for some voiceOver users, but for me it's much easier to disable the "interact on tab key" option referenced above and explore threads in a conventional tree view. By all means install growl as it will make life with apps such as Skype and Adium (the Mac client for MSNMessenger, AIM, YahooMessenger etc) easier. Bare in mind that this list is archived. For example, if you wanted a comprehensive list , of MacOS keyboard commands, you can visit the list archive press option-shift-tab to move to the first text box and enter the string "from:"Esther" Snow Leopard shortcut keys". the first result is an item that Esther wrote about 15 months ago. As the above example illustrates, the archive supports searching from a specific sender. There are many other search options available such as wild cards, Boolean expressions or date ranges. While getting started, I had trouble dealing with the vo keyboard commands (especially since many are redundant to keyboard shortcuts requiring fewer keys which are built into SnowLeopard. For me, when I congot into the trackpad commander and configured a more logical layout, things began to take off. Good luck getting started, and congrads on your new toy!! Best regards. Re: Anti-virus/spyware for the Mac.
Hello. If you want to get something off the app store, you could try Virus Barrier plus. It's like virus barrier accept it's got more features. Can't remember what exactly the other features are but I think it was something to do with scanning. I havn't found one accessibility problem with it accept for the update button that says something about following a link for some reason. The app is only $8 but that was on sale and it might be back up to $10 now. Hth. On 2011-05-05, at 5:59 PM, Shameless FanGirl wrote: > To go with, or not to? I just had to email the text and photos. furthermore, he decided to post the ad for free for a year which amounted to a $44 savings. Re: the installation, and uninstallation of applications to the Mac
I would go ahead and install skype, it works well, though the interface is a bit cluttered in the newest version. There are 2 ways apps are installed. For the most part, apps come as a disk image, this has a .dmg extension, be sure to enable the showing of file extensions in finder preferences. Highlight the file and open it with command o. You may have several files, the ones you are interested in have a .pkg or .app extension. If it has a .pkg extension, this indicates that it's an install package. Open it to start the install. Most of the time, you will find a file with a .app extension. If this is the case, highlight it and press command c to copy it. Now open your applications folder with command shift a, and press command v to paste the file in the applications folder. That's all there is to it. You can then open the application like any other file. No messing around with shared files or registry keys, none of that garbage. IPad II thoughts
I got my IPad 2 on Monday. I have to say it has been an awesome experience so far. Most apps that work on the IPhone seem to work much better on the IPad. The accessibility is better and the performance has been impressive. I bought the super cover from Apple and after I got it, I was disappointed in it. It was just a cover for the screen and left the IPad exposed on the back and sides. I ended up returning the cover and getting a sweet cover from Amazon for $19.95. The $19.95 cost vs the $69.95 was a reality check. The cover I bought works just like the Apple cover but offers more protection and yes, it wakes the IPad up like it should. All in all, it has been a good experience and I'm glad I bought it. Kev -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. hey isaac; i thought it was cool too. my own submission form isn't as sofisticated as theirs, but safari has no trouble with it. I'm betting they did their own coding. php and java can be very tricky especially if you don't have a mac in house to play with. now the big thing will be if i can actually drive some traffic to my site that results in new sales because of it. this is especially true because my brother is part owner in the manufacturer of the piece of equipment advertised there. glad you liked my post. take care, max On May 6, 2011, at 12:28 AM, Isaac Obie wrote: Max, Congratulations on getting your ad up there! Hi Geoff.
