RE: Accessible Weather Radio App for iOS devices
Can anyone give a direct link to this app is the app store? It does notify you when there is an alert for a city you are watching and you can watch 5 I believe. You can read or hear the warnings & forecasts. In the FAQ they tell you that you may occasionally need to close it int he App switcher & restart if it isn't ab le to get data. I've had to do that once but then all was well. Whether it's worth $10 probably depends on a variety of personal factors, but it does what it says it does & does it accessibly. So if a weather radio style app is what you want, this will probably do the trick. On 4/27/11, Mike Arrigo wrote: > I actually got this app, it is very accessible. Re: Accessible Weather Radio App for iOS devices
Hi Frank. I think the one you are referring to is called Imap Weather Radio. The direct App Store link is: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/imapweather-radio/id413511993?mt=8 I have this app. It costs 10 dollars. While it does do some helpful things, in my opinion, it is not worth that much money unless they add more features in the future, which they certainly might. The other day, when we had tons of warnings and such, I did not hear one alert, and yes, I did have alerts turned on. Others have had better luck though, so maybe it is just something I am doing wrong. Hi Denise, when you start a download the download window should open. There you can interact with the list of downloads. Interact with an item and move to the right by pressing VO + arrow left to see the download status. If your downloads window doesn't apear automatically infront just press CMD + Option + l. Re: For those who can actually afford this, DocuScan Plus is now on the mac app store.
Don't forget, too, that if you purchase a liceence, you can use it cross platform, which might be useful for some people(not me, my pc is now a useful door stop-lol!). When I talked to them, they did say they are working on an i phone version, not sure when it'll come out, though. You can also get a 7 day trial, to test it out, which is what I'm doing. This is early days for this. I also am testing vu scan and abbyy fine reader express, which is almost as expensive when you add them together and there will always be something to complain about, according to some.. I've fiddled with the virtual machine on here with no luck, so I hope this works nicely, might be well worth the price. We'll see.. Re: Accessible Weather Radio App for iOS devices
For what it's worth, my own iMapweather radio has successfully alerted me of each thunderstorm watch and warning that has occurred within the past twenty-four hours. In fact, we are under one now. It also alerted me to a severe thunderstorm warning issued yesterday evening while we were watching a movie in a different part of the county. While the watch/warning box didn't even affect my home location, it detected my current location and issued the alert as appropriate. I had wondered if that would really worked as advertised, and sure enough, it did. My only complaint about the alerts at this point would be the inability to specify a more obnoxious alert tone. While the app did a great job of sending alerts in the middle of the night, I was sleeping too hard to have heard them. In some ways, it would be nice to have it alert me in the same way the iPhone's timer does, making racket until I turn it off. That would be sure to get my attention better. :-) In any case, more customization of the alerts would make this app really wonderful. Having said that, it does allow for very detailed customization of the type of alerts I wish to receive, which I have not seen in any other weather app as of yet. -- Jenny Wood Phone: (972) 989-3894 Email: kc5...@gmail.com Facebook/Twitter/Skype: kc5gni On May 1, 2011, at 8:14 AM, Frank Ventura wrote: > Thanks, I think that is the one I was looking for. > Frank > > From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com > [mailto:macvisionaries@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Lynn Schneider > Sent: Sunday, May 01, 2011 8:49 AM > To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com > Subject: Re: Accessible Weather Radio App for iOS devices > > Hi Frank. Re: imho: the cost of Mac vs others and their solutionsWas: docuscan is available
Aman, I apologize if you felt that my response was ladened with emotional adjectives. I agree that I was defending Apple products and the MacOS. In reading your subsequent posts to others who've responded to your assertions, it is clear to me that no matter how one slices it, your mind is made up as to the quote "adaptability" of the Mac and the MacOS. Those of us who own and use the Mac appreciate the efforts that Apple has made with respect to accessibility and providing us with a high quality alternative. Market share does not equate to adaptability in my opinion. I don't wish to belabour this thread anymore. We all have our own opinions, and are welcome to them but the point of this list is to assist each other with the use of the Mac, and threads such as this do not meet this goal. Stop Interacting With the Scroll Area and navigate right to the next Scroll Area and Interact. 8. In this one you can manipulate the items to tell Mail to automatically put the message in the Trash, to Bounce it back to the sender and many other things that would suit your purposes. You can play with the rule a little by changing the initial criteria to be "Is" instead of "Contains", but this may be a little too narrow and may not do what you ask in all cases. HTH. Later... RE: progress indicator in safari
Hi Denise. Yay! Here's my first time helping a VO user for a change! I don't know about others, but the way I check on a download is: 1. Interact with the download list. 2. Navigate to your download and interact with it. 3. VO to the right to hear a few things including the progress. If you get the file icon, the button to show in finder, and the size of the file but nothing indicating that the download is still going or paused, then it's complete. Hope this helps. Re: Accessible Weather Radio App for iOS devices
Hi: Yes, it does. You can also set it to pick up any alert that is non weather related that would be broadcast over a weather radio, I'm assuming this would be something like local evacuation alerts due to an accident, nuclear incident, etc. On May 1, 2011, at 9:39 AM, Cheree wrote: > Cheree Heppe here: > > Does the app allow for or alert for man made hazards, such as fires, etc? > > > Regards, > cheree Heppe > > > Sent from my iPhone > > On 01/05/2011, at 6:39 AM, Jenny Wood wrote: > >> For what it's worth, my own iMapweather radio has successfully alerted me of >> each thunderstorm watch and warning that has occurred within the past >> twenty-four hours. Re: document margins
Hi Sarai, If you're asking how to set the margins in either TextEdit or Pages, then do the following in Pages: 1. Open the Inspector, cmd-option-i or press the show Inspector in the Toolbar. 2. Select the Document tab. 3. Set the margins according to your wishes. for TextEdit: • I wouldn't go there. by default, Textedit has margins of 1 inch (2.54 cm) all around and they are not readily changeable. There are methods whereby you can mess with some template files and entering data within that file. This process is not worth your effort if you already have Pages. • I believe that I also heard somewhere that you could set the margins in another word processor, save it then open it in TextEdit and they'll be set for you. I haven't confirmed that one though. HTH. Later... Re: Accessible Weather Radio App for iOS devices
Interesting question. My best guess would be yes, and here's why. When browsing through the list of warnings, watches and statements you can choose to be alerted to, there is a whole section for fire watches, warnings, etc. I can tell you that here in north Texas, we have been experiencing major wild fires over the past month, and NOAH actually issued a "fire warning", which was the first of it's kind in this area as far as we know. Well, there is an option for fire warnings in the list of alerts in this app. I do know the alerts for fire watches and red flag warning days are available as well. When the fire warning was issued a couple of weeks ago, NOAH alerted folks just as they would have if it were a severe weather situation because it called for immediate evacuation of the area. -- Jenny Wood Phone: (972) 989-3894 Email: kc5...@gmail.com Facebook/Twitter/Skype: kc5gni On May 1, 2011, at 9:39 AM, Cheree wrote: > Cheree Heppe here: > > Does the app allow for or alert for man made hazards, such as fires, etc? > > > Regards, > cheree Heppe > > > Sent from my iPhone > > On 01/05/2011, at 6:39 AM, Jenny Wood wrote: > >> For what it's worth, my own iMapweather radio has successfully alerted me of >> each thunderstorm watch and warning that has occurred within the past >> twenty-four hours. iTunes Library location verse media location
Hi All, hopefully a quick note, thanks to Esther who has already been helping out with this one... I wish to know the following, at present I keep my iTunes Library itself, on a NAS (network attached storage device), this means that I can access both the content stored in the iTunes Media folder as well as other more specific iTunes Library Database elements from any of my Mac devices without problems, albeit only at one time, as the iTunes Library XML file can only be open at one given time on one machine. This has worked fine for me for a while now, but now I wish to change this arrangement for various reasons and I'd like to know if the following setup is possible. I'd like to have individual iTunes Libraries on each Mac, three in total, with the Media Folder pointing to my NAS. now this would result in one location for all content, but presumably here is where I'd run into an issue. if I made a change on my iMac, this change would not automatically update the XML database on my MacBook Air or my MacMini. thus the change on those two devices would be invisible. or would it, by storing the content in terms of hte Media Folder in the same location, and pointing the iTunes Library Database XML file to the same storage location, would this in some way result in an auto updating effect on each machine, or is there another way of achieving this? I'm aware of Home sharing, but this would require each machine to be turned on to move / update the other. what I'd like in effect, is one library database on each machine, with one single Media Folder that they all share and look to. i.e. in the advanced options in Preferences. Then when I launch iTunes on any of the Mac's, the library would automatically scan or check the Media Folder for any new content / changes and update its respective XML database. or am I in XML denial? Ultimately I'd really not like to use Home Sharing as this is really not what I'd like... if this is off the reasonable topic front, please e-mail me back at for...@talknav.com many thanks. Re: how does one insert special characters?
Hello Ray, I've never used special characters from the menu, but I can tell you where to find a lot of the accent signs. When you apply an accent to a letter, make the accent first, then type the letter. Acute: Option-e; Grave: Option-accent sign; Circumflex: Option-i; Diaeresis: Option-u; O-e diphthong: Option-q. Try experimenting in TextEdit, say. That's what I do when I want to find a special character since Keyboard Help doesn't announce characters created using the Option key. Re: how does one insert special characters?
Hi Ray, I use the Option key combinations to generate special characters. I'll paste in a short excerpt from a reply that I made to Kevin Minor (actually, he asked about typing French using an Apple Bluetooth Keyboard on his iPhone, but the answer is applicable -- I'll leave out the part describing switching to a French or Canadian French input keyboard). There's a much longer list of special characters out there (and previously posted). My favorite is Option-Shift-K, which generates the Apple sign (). A lot of people use the bullet symbol, Option-asterisk (•). I don't try to insert any special characters from the Character Viewer now. I have a much longer list of special symbols that has been posted before -- but you probably don't want the long list of special math symbols. You can either switch to a French language input keyboard or type accented characters and special symbols using keyboard shortcut combinations that involved holding down the Option key. This is described in several posts on the macvisionaries list, but I'll paste in a quick summary here of Option key combinations to type accented characters with a subset excerpted from the Mac list posts: acute accent - Option-e grave accent - Option-accent sign (on an Engish input keyboard, this is the leftmost key below escape and above tab) circumflex accent - Option-i diaeresis - Option-u tilde - Option-n The above group of keys are "dead keys". You need to type the accented letter after the Option+letter combination, so to type an "e" with an acute accent you press the Option+e keys, release, and then type the letter "e". If you press "Return" without typing a letter, you simply get the accent mark. Other accents that are closely associated with particular letters are not "dead keys"; pressing the two key combination generates the special character: German eszett or sharp ess - Option-s Nordic slashed o - Option-o C with cedilla - Option-c "oe ligature" - Option-q For punctuation, you can also use the keyboard shortcuts (for the inverted exclamation and question mark of Spanish, and for specialized quotation marks): ¡ inverted exclamation mark Option+1 ¿ inverted question mark Option+Shift+slash (Shift+/ is question mark) ‘ left single quotation mark Option+right bracket ’ right single quotation mark Option+Shift+right bracket “ left double quotation mark Option+left bracket ” right double quotation mark Option+Shift+left bracket « left pointing double angle quotation mark Option+backslash » right pointing double angle quotation mark Option+Shift+backslash ‹ single left pointing angle quotation mark Option+Shift+3 › single right pointing angle quotation mark Option+Shift+4 And for the Euro and copyright symbols: € Euro Option+Shift+2 (on a British keyboard this is Option+2) © copyrightOption+g HTH. Re: Spellchecker and mail question
Dear Sarai, I was able to confirm your experience with the inability of being able to close the Spell Check Window without having the message being sent. If you change the settings in the Mail Preferences window, under the compose pane, you should be able to cure the problem. there are three selections in the pop up spell check window. One is "Never". the second is "While typing". The third is"Upon pressing the send button".If you change the spell check to either "Never" or "While Typing" you will be able to close the window by either command-w or VO-ESCAPE.. Once you do that you may bring the Spell check back up by pressing SHIFT-COMMAND-SEMICOLON or if the misspelled word is selected, I hope this helps. Sincerely Yours, robert Nelson you may use the shortcut menu VO-SHIFT-M. Re: strange behavior with safari
Dear Denise, I have had this problem just yesterday at the web site for Human Life Amendment. There was an edit box where you could type in your letter to your congressman. In the same case even though Voice Over announced edit, it was not letting me actually enter text. Let me note that the edit box was situated in a cell of a table. I did get it finally to accept my text. My usual method is to tab into the edit box and then if I cannot immediately type, I try to interact . The next thing I try is the next control command VO-CMD-J. I have no explanation why Voice Over does not let you type in the first instance or when does the situation occur. Perhaps, it is because the edit box is embedded in a table? I hope this helps. Re: Spellchecker and mail question
I believe this is the way Mail is supposed to work. I personally use cmd-semi-colon to do my spell checking before I send a message. It isn't as full-featured as the dialog, but it gets the job done. You could use cmd-colon just as easily. Best, Zack. the chat that won't die...
I'm using Adium for AIM and, for some reason, every time I reconnect, a *VERY* old chat window comes up containing a fragment of a conversation with a buddy from 10/31/10. It's the same fragment every time, whether we actually IM each other or not. This doesn't happen with any of my other IM sessions, just this one. Anyone got a clue how to make the pesky thing go away: Thanks, and happy May! :) • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group.
