key mapping in VMWare Fusion

2011-04-13 Thread Cam
Dear all,

I have the latest Macbook Air with a 2.1ghz processor and the latest
version of snow leopard. I installed Windows 7 64 byt today in a
virtual machine and was really blown away. I have installed the latest
build of Jaws, and discovered I need to map the keys to get a jaws
key.

I'm not very technical, so sorry if these questions sound silly (the
whole virtual machines thing is a bit of a leap into the unknown!).
Would someone mind giving me step by step instructions if possible as
to how I can assign keys to work as my jaws modifier key etc? If you
could tell me all the keys I need to assign and how to do it that
would be great.

I did do some reading on this and I saw a program called sharp keys.
But I can't see anywhere that it works under Windows 7 64 byt. Do I
need sharp keys, and does it work under Windows 7 64 byt?

Many thanks for all your help
cam

lots of snappiness improvements with vo as far as when you upgrade from
leopard. In snowy it's also possible to lable controls with a hotkey that
escapes me for now. Handy when you have a fairly accessible app and no labels
on some controls.

Didn't trackpad commander get included in 10.6? if your mac has a multi-touch
trackpad you'd be able to see those advantages as well. that's a big
improvement in my opinion. I use it all the time with VO on my mbp.

How Do I Stop VO Announcing New Window

2011-04-13 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hey all. Is there a way to make Voice Over stop announcing "New Window"
everytime something pops up. For example, in Skype, I had visual notifications
turned on so that I could here if contacts sign on or off, but Voice Over keeps
saying "Skype has new window" when these visual notifications pop up. I've
turned them off but I'm thinking that the speech feature needs to have them on
in order to work. So is there a way to turn off new window messages?

accessible instrument tuner

2011-04-13 Thread Ed Worrell
Hello listers, in a random search for "blind" in the app store i ran across
this gem of an app called Talking Tuner, It was developed by a company called
HotPaw Productions It was developed with the blind in mind. I have used it to
tune my steel lap guitar, and will try it on my trumpet soon. I have it on my
iphone I don't know if it will work on an ipod, I assume it will work with a
mic hooked up to it. It only cost .99 cents in the usa app store. I am glad to
see some one make a tuner for the blind in mind.

Thanks ED

Hi Cam,

Sharp Keys works fine in Win 7 64 bit in Fusion. Just start the exe file and
begin to remap your keys. To learn mor how to adjust keys listen to the podcast
about Sharp Keys on

It's quite easy.

Have fun

Re: How Do I Stop VO Announcing New Window

2011-04-13 Thread Simon Cavendish
Shaun,,

In voiceover utility under verbosity, you can adjust general verbosity. If you
vo+right arrow further in the "general" tab verbosity dialogue having chosen
the level of verbosity first, you encounter "detail" element which may be
collapsed. Vo+space on it to expand it. Vo+right further to see the table of
the elements you wish to adjust verbosity for. The last element in the table is
window. It is set to default, You can activate the menu button which says
""default" with vo+space. You have choices there in the menu. The "custom" menu
choice may be of interest to you as you can adjust various ways voiceover says
or describes the item "window". Have a play with it to see wehther it is going
to give you what you need.

With best wishes

PCI cards on mac books or imacs

2011-04-13 Thread bigboy529
Hi list, a while back I heard something of being able to buy some kind
of extention card which allows you to plug a PCI card in to a mac book
pro or imac, I guess you plug it in to the firewire port and then it
is a lot like a drive bay where you slot in the card. Does anyone have
some more info on this and where can I get more info on it maybe a
website or something?

I hear that Parallels has less lag than Fusion does, but all discussion I've

SOmething in the sidebar that won't go away

2011-04-13 Thread Scott Howell
All,

Got a file that appears in the sidebar and the file no longer exists on my
machine. So, how can I get rid of the entry that does not exist?
I did a search on Google and found an article that talks about editing the
com.apple.sidebar.plist; however, I cannot locate the item. There are lots of
numbers that are associated with aliases etc., but not sure I would just want
to start hacking stuff out of the plist without knowing what may happen. I
could of course delete the file, but that seems rather extreme and unproductive
for one item.
So, any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
THanks,

Not sure if deleting the file will cause any harm at all. It'll just recreate

Re: How Do I Stop VO Announcing New Window

2011-04-13 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Simon and all. I did what you said to do, open the VO Utilities, went under
verbosity and under general, went to the details disclosure triangle and
expanded it, went to the window option, hit the button that says default and
switched it to custom, then made the changes I wanted to make and hit ok only
for my changes to not take effect. This has been a problem since 10.6.5 for me,
and I was hoping that it would be fixed in 10.6.7. I guess that option is still
broken. Should I set the verbosity to low if custom won't work? I think I may
email Apple Accessibility about this too.

Re: SOmething in the sidebar that won't go away

2011-04-13 Thread Scott Howell
Matt,

True I could do that. However, I was trying to find a solution that would not
require such drastic measures. :) If I end up doing that then so be it, but
like to see what my options are first. If I knew what all the stuff was in the
plist file it may be possible to delete the offending entry. Unfortunately I
cannot determine which is the correct entry. There are lots of alphanumeric
strings, but none indicate the file name.

Cannot add music to iTunes library . . .

2011-04-13 Thread Christine Grassman
Hello all. I am rather frustrated, having spent a good chunk of my limited free
time today attempting to add music files purchased *from* iTunes to my iTunes
library. For whatever reason, they were not put there automatically, even
though all is set up to accomplish this. I previously added music files to the
iTunes library easily on a PC by selecting, copying, and pasting. I can't even
attempt this, if needed, because I cannot locate the music folder containing
the songs in question. If I search for them in Spotlight, they appear, but
attempting to find the folder and check it in the file menu in iTunes lkibrary
has proven impossible. Whenever I look in my music folders, my recent
purchases are nowhere to be found, even though I am seeking them in the
specified folders from Spotlight. If I must add them individually from
Spotlight, is this doable? Do I have a speedier option? Can anyone enlighten me
as to what I am probably doing incorrectly?
Thank you.
Christine

adding a radio station into itunes

2011-04-13 Thread Matt Dierckens
Hi list.
I have a radio station that I found online that isn't on the radio stations
group on itunes. is there a way that I could add it in there so that it is
avaiable in the itunes radio station list?

Re: Parallels or Fusion

2011-04-13 Thread Mike Arrigo
Go with Fusion, parallels is not accessible with voiceover. For some reason,
when parallels was developed, the company chose to use all nonstandard
controls, I have no idea why, but they seem to have no interest in correcting
this.

Re: word documents on mac's?

If you are only requiring to read the document, you can just hit the space bar

TextEdit lets you edit RTF Word Documents. For Office 2007 and 2010 docx files
you will need Pages. A new OS is due in the summer, who knows maybe this OS
will offer even more built in support.

I think Bean the open source free Word Processor also supports MS Word, and
there is also Nisus Writer Pro.

Hi all,

Since the new OS is coming out this summer, this would be a good time
fozr everfyone to write to Apple support and request what you feel we
need in word processing and database programs.

Hiya mate,
Glad you found it useful. I've never before messed about with the

repository for information, I'd say the best way for people to
assimilate (for want of a better word) new information, is just to sit
back, and sponge on these lists, because there's some great folks on
here, Rays last post proves that really. I mean, here I am, been using
a Mac for everything for about 4 or 5 years now, and I'm still
learning new stuff, like that voiceover command f10 thing that someone
posted in (can't remember who). A "Newbie's guide to the mac", would
be a fundamentally bad idea in my opinion, because the sheer bulk of
information, is more likely to scare the living shit out of new users,
rather than enlighten them, whereas, if they just sit back, and listen
and learn, they're going to be drip-fed new info, which means they're
more likely to take it in (little and often and all that), as well as
not be overwealmed by all the new tech stuff.

HTH, and sorry for the ramble LOL.

If you go to system preferences, to the growl preference pain, and "Display

and notifications become automagically accessible. I'm using Notify OS X, but you could
probably use anything.

Well for me the rambel is just fine because, although I am not yet a Mac owner,
I am learning a heck of a lot and that it is not such a scary move from Windows
to a Mac afterall. Why? Because of good folk like yourself on great lists
like this one. So thanks for this list and keep rambeling on brother!

PS. There was a post I saw recently of someone who did come up with a
site where one can go to fined such a list member driven repository of
Mac things and such. I'll see if I can find the post and re-post it to
this list if I may do so if it's in accordance with this list rules.

Re: dom to group mode, vo h h tells me nothing

2011-04-13 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marlaina,

The choice of DOM or Groups mode is very personal. In DOM mode, you can only
navigate right and left, and the items are not grouped together in paragraphs,
as it were.

In Groups mode, you can navigate in all directions and the items are put
together, mainly logically, in paragraphs.

On sites I know well, I find it quicker to get around in Groups mode, but when
I want to read an article, I go into DOM mode as it works much better for this,
especially for scientific articles which contain lots of links. In DOM mode,
the links come in the right places, whereas in Groups mode, they are put all
together at the end of each paragraph which can lead to VO reading complete
nonsense.

Cheers,

Anne

I don't know if this would be available to you now, but have you tried
focussing on the item and pressing VO-shift-m to go to the contextual menu?
When I do that with items in my sidebar, there's an option that says "remove
from sidebar".
