Re: Extremely Frustrated trying to copy and paste . . .

2011-03-23 Thread Ian Robinson
Hi All,

I too use the Copy Last Phrase command and find it extremely useful. However,
I usually Press VO v to display the Verbosity Dialogue and set Verbosity to Low
first. Then the copy doesn't include "heading level 3", "link", etc.

Regards.

Expand and collapse arrows in iTunes podcast area

2011-03-23 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I was looking at my podcasts in iTunes on the Mac and I noticed that I couldn't
operate the expand disclosure triangle except by accident. I have no idea how
I did it. I have enough vision to do it with my trackpad and my fingers. But
I was, I thought, in the LCD section of the iTunes window when i accidentally
pressed a key combination that expanded the podcast dropdown options. I never
managed to repeat the trick. How does one do that intentionally?
Thanks,
Kevin

Question about trackpad

2011-03-23 Thread Kimberly
Hi guys,

I've been wanting to experiment with using trackpad gestures to perform some
vo functions like interact with element as I seem to have trouble pressing
control, option and shift simultaneously. The problem is I can't get my
trackpad to speak when I touch it. I know the trackpad is responding because
a sighted person has told me the cursor moves around when I touch the
trackpad, but what am I doing or not doing? Do I need to turn something on?
Check something?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: Question about trackpad

2011-03-23 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Kimber,
You can start by turning on the trackpad commander. You can do this either in
Voiceover utility or by putting
two fingers down on the pad and rotating them clockwise while holding down
control and option. I
personally use this latter method with my right thumb and index finger. It
might take a bit of getting
used too at first, but the gestures really are very efficient, quite similar to
the ones on my iPod Touch.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

Hello Carolyn,

If you have VoiceOver set to announce when a modifier key is pressed, the VO

If the user wants to access the content of the blog of a writer well

Safari browser, Voiceover behaves inappropriately, it seems more like
Firefox instead of Safari!

Re: Extremely Frustrated trying to copy and paste . . .

2011-03-23 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
I haven't used the command vo+shift+c to do this task.
What I do, and it works in most of the cases:
I switch from dom-mode (used by default) to group-mode when I want to select
text on a webpage.
To do this switch quickly, I have assigned a keystroke in the
keyboard-commander.
When I am in group-mode, It seems to be much more easy to select text on a
webpage with shift+down-arrow (also or only if quicknav is on).

Hope this helps,

best regards,

Chooser didn't let me read.

I only succeeded in finding text on a page by reading the screen with my
Optacon, picking out a word and looking for that word in the Item Chooser. Not
good at all.

Cheers,

Anne

Two ways to deal with the problem web site [was Re: Web site problems]

2011-03-23 Thread Esther
Hello Anne and Marcelo,

I can get that page to read with VoiceOver using Safari Reader. Try pressing
Command-Shift-R. The text for the article will come up separately and be read
by VoiceOver. However, this will only work to display the main blog article --
it won't show up the comments.

The best solution I found for reading the Web page was to set up a Services
Menu Shortcut using "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection", do a Command-A
(select all) on the web page, then apply the shortcut to send the contents to
TextEdit, where it will automatically start reading normally with VoiceOver.

You need to do two things to set this up: (1) Add the "New TextEdit Window
Containing Selection" option by checking it under the "Services" options in the
Keyboard Shortcuts pane of your Keyboard menu under "System Preferences" and
(2) Assign this service option to an application keyboard shortcut. The second
step is not strictly necessary, but will save you a few navigation steps if you
use this a lot. The difference is that instead of pressing Command-A to select
all on the web page, and then navigating to the entry for "New TextEdit Window
Containing Selection" that now shows up in the Services sub-menu of the Safari
menu on the menu bar, you simply press your assigned shortcut key combination
after doing the "Select All". You might need to restart Finder or log in again
to have the shortcut take effect immediately after setting up the shortcut
definition, because I believe that the Services menu shortcut will apply to
selections in all applications (not just Safari), and that might require a
restart to take effect. Here are the steps:

1. Open "System Preferences" (Control+F2 to the Apple menu on the menu bar,
Arrow down, type "s y" and press return)
2. In "System Preferences" navigate to the "Keyboard Menu" and VO+Space to open
it
3. On the "Keyboard Menu" navigate to the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab select it
(VO+Space)
4. On the "Keyboard Shortcuts" tab navigate to the "Shortcuts Categories" table
and interact (VO-Shift Down arrow). VO+right arrow to the second column
(category names), then VO+Down arrow to select "Services". Stop interacting
with the "Shortcuts Categories" tabel.
5. VO+Right arrow to the "Table of services" and interact, VO+Right arrow to
the second column (services names).
6. Use item chooser menu (VO+I), and type "t e x t e" then VO+Down arrow to
"New TextEdit Window Containing Selection". VO+Space to select. Make sure that
this service selection is checked (VO+Left arrow to the first column, if needed)
7. Stop interacting with the table (VO+Shift Up Arrow)

At this point, you could close the System Preferences menu (Command+W), and
"New TextEdit Window Containing Selection" will appear as an option in the
Services menu, which you access from your application (Preview, Safari, etc.)
after selecting text by using Control+F2 to move to the menu bar, VO+Right
arrow to the Application name, then arrow down to menu and press "s e" to go
to services, VO+Right arrow to the submenu and VO+Down arrow. There's now an
entry for "New TextEdit Window Containing Selection"

If you want to assign this service option an application keyboard shortcut,
instead of closing the window, take the following steps:
8. VO+Right arrow to "Add an Application Shortcut" button and VO+Space
9. In the dialog window VO+right arrow past application to the pop up menu
button, VO+space, and choose "All Applications"
10. VO+Right arrow past Menu title to the text field and type or paste in
(exactly):
New TextEdit Window Containing Selection
11. VO+RightRight Arrow to the Keyboard shortcut and press the shortcut key
combination you want to use e.g. Command+Shift+Option+W)
12. VO+Right arrow to the Add button and VO+Space
13. Command+Q to quit system preferences

To send all the text from the web page, select all with Command+A, then use
Command-Shift-Option-W to send your selection to a TextEdit window. You can
select parts of text, and you can choose other shortcut combinations for your
shortcut. Just make sure this doesn't conflict with some other shortcut your
might use. The Service Menu option for sending to TextEdit is faster and uses
fewer system resources than doing a copy and paste.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

2011-03-23 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Mike,

I believe a more objective user might put it differently. The sentence I have
in mind is that the JFW virtual viewer handles this infinitely better than
VO/Safari. I fear that the all too ubiquitous Pollyannaish attitude often
seen on this list that voiceOver can do no wrong will result in VI users having
inferior functionality in this and other browsing tasks on the MacOS platform
for decades to come.

Frankly, when I need to copy a large section of text from a web page (E.G.
sharing the latest Ann Coulter column I boot up my XP machine!!

I suspect Christine was already aware of all suggestions offered in this thread
so far prior to authoring her post. the problem is that IMHO the solutions
offered are not viable because in many instances such as the one sighted
above, there can be hundreds of chunks of text which all need to be copied one
at a time, MHO rendering the task impossible. Since there is no feedback given
as you use the shift arrow keys, there is no way to limit the selection, hence
it's almost easier to select all and cut it down. Much faster to boot up my XP
machine and selectively copy what I want n one step.

If I'm missing something I'd love to be shown the error of my ways, but
Christine has documented what I believe to be a major VO deficiency.

Best regards.
Geoff

Re: Expand and collapse arrows in iTunes podcast area

2011-03-23 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Ricardo,
What I was referring to is the disclosure triangle that allows you to
expand a podcast heading to show you the specific podcasts under the
main title. The VO Backslash hides and shows the items under the main
heading.

2011-03-23 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Esther,

I have no idea what I do wrong but the New TextEdit Window Containing Selection
does not appear in the services menu. I've followed the instructions contained
in your e-mail to the letter but to no avail. The maddening thing is that I had
once succeeded to activate this service and assign it a shortcut key on another
mac computer. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I was careful to type
in the name with its related capitals. But even before assigning the shortcut,
the selection of the service did not result in the service appearing under the
service menu in Safari for instance.

Best wishes

Re: Read system time with VO

2011-03-23 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I also just wanted to add that I created a new addition to my keyboard
commander collection. this one opens iTunes with right option I. I
guess the next thing I'd like to add would be a shortcut for Pages
using right option P. the only problem is that, when i open Pages
from the doc, I end up in the template chooser, which I personally
find a PITA. I'd prefer landing in a blank portrait oriented
document, much like you do in Text Edit, from where I could use a
standard "Open Recent File" command to open the doc I want.
Any ideas?

Re: Two ways to deal with the problem web site [was Re: Web site problems]

2011-03-23 Thread Esther
Dear Simon,

I wrote up the instructions under OS 10.6.4 before Christmas. (At the time, my
own computer had a bad disk sector, so I was using my PowerBook G4 from 2005!)
I did set this up on my current computer under 10.6.5, but since I was doing
this for myself, I didn't try to exactly document the steps I repeated as I did
them. My recollection is that I may have needed to login again for the
settings to take effect -- at least for the shortcut. Let me take a look at
setting this up on someone's MacBook Air later today, and I'll get back to you.
The services menu options will not appear unless you first select text, by the
way. And you should be able to use this to send selected text to TextEdit from
any Cocoa application (such as Preview or Mail).

This was most discussed on the mac-access list a while ago, because Paul
Hopewell has been using this. Thanks for providing feedback, and I will check
this.

Cheers,

Esther

Hi Kevin,
Look into the Pages preferences with cmd-comma. That will let you decide
whether to open the template chooser or not, among other things.
Hope this helps,

Selecting section of website

2011-03-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

Here's how to select part of a web page and copy it into a text document.

• Find the start point for your selection and set a hotspot (VO-Shift-number),
it must not be a link;
• Find the end point for your selection and set a second hotspot, once again,
not a link;
• Turn cursor tracking off (VO-Shift-F3);
• Bring the mouse to the hotspot (VO-Cmd-F5);
• Check that the mouse is actually on the hotspot (VO-F5);
• Click the physical mouse or trackpad;
• Go to first hotspot (VO-number);
• Bring the mouse to the hotspot;
• Check that the mouse is on the hotspot;
• Hold down the Shift key and click the mouse or trackpad;
• Press Cmd-C to copy the text.

If you've succeeded in highlighting text, you'll hear "Copy".

Cheers,

Anne

Or you can go to a block of text, hit vo-shift-c, open up a document, and hit
command-v. You can do this for any subsequent blocks as well. THis will
obviously not be a method that is preferred by everyone, but it sure is easy.

Hi Kevin!
I also had a commander key set for Itunes but from time to time it brought up
that choose Itunes library as if you had launched Itunes holding the option key
down!
So I've moved Itunes in the doc next to finder and open it from there using

And removed the commander stroke!

Acapela voices

2011-03-23 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Kevin and all,

I wanted to chime in on the Acaepla voices thread. Kevin, you can get acapela
voices from Origin Instruments. I think the link is:

http://www.nextup.com/acapela.html

I think the company I purchased them from was Origin Instruments. I have the
British ENglish and U.S. voices. You have to purchase the U.S. voices Heather,
Ryan and laura installed first if you'd like to have the British voices. I
think the cost was $99 for the first pack of voices and then if you purchase
more I believe the cost is reduced. I hope this helps. have a great day.

Musically,
Allison

2011-03-23 Thread Simon Cavendish
Dear Esther,

You are right, and you are mostly right on most occasions. That was the missing
factor. Having read your response, I selected your message in Mail and then
checked in the services menu and indeed it did appear. I thought the item in
question would always be there - never imagined it would only appear if one had
actually selected a piece of text. So yes, it works perfectly well. I hope you
are not going to waste your valuable time checking on it now. That is the
missing piece of information in the otherwise perfect ste-by-step description
of what needs to be done. So - as I know you do - you could add this to the
description and save it - as I know you do because you are much more sensible
than I am - until some other new-be like myself comes along and wants the same
thing.

Hi Ricardo:
I couldn't agree with you more. It's nice to know one can take about 20 steps
to do something that should take 2 or 3.

! I'm planning to take this up with my Vo trainer. She's usually pretty good
about writing to accessibility about things she encounters in our sessions.
The neat thing is she is going to continue working with me, because our
sessions have become more of an ideas exchange, and she learns from the little
things I bring in to learn about. So, it's turned into a good resource for both
of us.

Take care

acapella voices

2011-03-23 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi. I've used the Acapela voices on here, like them a lot. I do have a few
negatives though. The first is that in between periods, the voices pause longer
than the standard Mac voices do. I don't know if this is how Acapela made them
or if it's because of Voice Over, but it gets annoying after a while. I'd
rather use good old Mac Alex to read my stuff. Secondly, Assistiveware charges
you an arm and a leg for Infovox Ivox plus the voices, I think the highest I've
seen was around $400 and the lowest I've seen was $99 just for a program that's
not a screen reader. I told them that I was interested in buying the voices but
don't want to pay the high price for them and they told me to try Ghost Reader
which the voices won't work with Voice Over from what I heard. But all in all,
I like the voices. I can't wait to try out Acapela Tracy, the new US English
female voice they just released. She's available for Infovox 3 on the PC and
should be available soon for Infovox Ivox or so Assistiveware has told me. Go
to acapelagroup.com and listen to how she sounds. You might be surprised.

Shawn

ICal question

2011-03-23 Thread Jes Smith
Hi all,

Something really strange is happening with ICal. Whenever I create an event and
then scroll to the particular date on which that event falls, I can't get the
events corresponding to that day.
For example, if I have an event at 3 pm on April 15th, I go to April 15, but
don't see the event for just that day.
Any help?
Jes

Re: ICal question

2011-03-23 Thread Scott Howell
Try command-1 for day view and perhaps this will help or command-2 for week
view.

Try pressing control option backslash, that usually does the trick.

I broke click to flash!

2011-03-23 Thread John D. Lipsey
Hi guys!

I was having issues with click to flash today. Ever since I got home, I would
click on flash videos, then interact with the thing adn click play on click to
flash, and there was no audio. I checked for an update, sure enough there was
one. The update, however, broke click to flash. I now think flash loads
automatically, I can't find a way to stop it, and the play, back 30 seconds
button, etc are no longer visible to voiceover. I'd either like to revert back
to the old version of click to flash, or find some other alternative program.

Thoughts?
