Re: Very annoying "Safari Busy" message
Just for your info "The friend mail" as mentioned above is here: http://thefriendmail.com/ I've not actually tried it though. As for mobile facebook; It would seem that FB have changed the way that the pages refresh. Notice that when you hit enter to update your status or add a comment it doesn't make the page loading sound. At a guess they've workeda way with java to keep the page active rather than relying on the user to do a manual page update by reacting with the content. Another work around, apart from the VO on and off, is hitting command R to do a refresh. I notice that avoiding the tab key tends to help and just using VO arrow keys seems to work better though there is no hard and fast rule. We should let apple know about this problem as it does happen on many other pages on the net where the page is a little lively. Just one other thing, to help if you are using the standard FB page: I use an extension that kills the adverts, shh: https://extensions.apple.com/ And just do a VO F and search for Facebook ads blocker. Installing XCode 4
Hello everyone. I installed XCode 4 using VoiceOver but the installer hung indefinitely. I closed it and it looks like I have a clean installation but I'm not sure. Is there an installation log? Have any of you had this issue? Also, the installer is in the doc and I have no problem running it from there. Where is the installer physically located in the folder structure? AppleScript question
Hi everyone, I'm slowly making friends with my macbook. There are still a few issues bugging me and was wondering if anyone else has found a solution? I have both vmware (for running win xp) and emacs that pretty much need to have voiceover turned off when they have focus as they are self voicing. Now of course I can just hit command f5 to toggle VO on and off. However that gets quite anoying when you are switching back and forth between emacs, safari, vmware etc all the time. It occurred to me that AppleScript may be the answer. Now I'm pretty new to all this stuff and to be honest have never written an appleScript in my life. So the reading that I have done suggests the following: - Using the accessibility API (also called UI script) it should be possible. - Somehow it should be possible to get system events to trigger the script when an app changes focus. This is what I'm currently stuck on. Finding a way to trigger a script when an app gets focus. My idea is this: - trigger every time we change focus. - Check the application name against a list of self voicing apps e.g. emacs or vmware. - If it matches, check if VO is on, if it is then turn off VO. - If the app is not in the list, check if VO is on, if not then turn it on. All sounds pretty straight forward doesn't it :). I'm sure it is or at least might be if you knew what you were doing. So after a few hours of googling and reading appleScript tutorials I'm about done in for the night and have made no progress at all :(. If anyone out there has already written something similar that they would be willing to share, that would be awesome! Even a few pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any advice. The entire point of the script is to dump me there so I can continue on doing stuff. I have done some searching on the internet and found a way to make this happen. I was running my script with the following line: sh websites (websites being the filename) If I run it with the following command, it leaves me there when done: . websites (a dot before the name | websites still being the filename) Sometimes you just have to stumble on to an answer to figure it out. Re: using older charger on my MB pro?
actually that's backwards it's the voltage you really have to watch. Wattage is only a maximum capacity. watts is equal to volts multiplied by amps. If the voltage is the same and one supply can source 1 amp and another can source 2 amps, the second one will have a capacity twice that of the first. that is why you can use a higher watage supply on a computer that only requires a lower rating, as long as the voltage is exactly the same. using a lower wattage supply can destroy the supply if the computer requires more current than the supply is designed to produce. look at it like this. If you have one container with 10 gallons of water and a second with 50 gallons of water, you can dip a small cup into either one, but a bucket won't fit in the smaller container., because the larger bucket requires more water at once, but the cup requires a smaller ammount of water it can take it from either source. it's also like aaa vs d size batteries. both are 1.5 volts, but the d size batteries have a mugh higher current capacity, you could say wattage capacity. a transistor radio could be powered by both the aaa or the d size batteries, but a huge boom box couldn't run from the aaa batteries because it requires more wattage or more correctly more current than the aaa batteries are capable of, and would deplete the aaa batteries almost instantly. if they were power supplies the aaa batteries would overheat and be destroyed while the d batteries could run the little transistor radio for months, because the transistor radio requires much less wattage or more correctly current. I hope that helps make it easier to understand why people tend to confuse volts ams and watts. if you would like to find the wattage of any power supply multiply it's voltage by it's current capacity, given in amp or miliamp ratings. most wall wart type supplies will say something like 5 volts dc or 5vdc 500ma output so 5 volts times .5 amps equals 2.5 watts. something you might see in a cell phone usb charger. and the big take away from this really should be, unless you want to carry a voltage and current meter, I'd just bring your own power supply. Besides sharing is a pain! Yes. Good tip if I wanted to stay in the Mac environment. I want, however, to have this work in the terminal. I guess I should have mentioned that but, I thought it was implied. Re: Keynote Question
Hello Ezzy, Once you've opened the document with KeyNote, use the command VO-Cmd-T to find the table of slides. Once you've selected a slide, stop interacting with the Scroll area and navigate right to the next Scroll area and interact. Here you'll find the Layout Area, interact with this and you'll find your slide. There's a lot of interacting involved with using KeyNote. Re: organizing bookmarks
Hello Laura, After you press Command Option B you'll be in a Search Text Field. VO left arrow once and you'll find a table. Interact with it (VO-Shift-down arrow)and you'll see categories for History (for the list of web pages you have visited so far) Bookmarks Bar, Bookmarks Menu, All RSS Feeds, and one entry for each bookmark import, if you did any. Use the up and down arrow keys to move between the categories. You probably have been adding bookmarks to the Bookmarks Menu, so select that and stop interacting with the table (VO-Shift-up arrow). VO-right arrow twice and you're at a different table. Interact with it and you'll see all your bookmarks. To create a bookmark folder navigate to the bookmark immediately above where you want the folder to be and press Command-Shift-N. Type the name you want to give it (you won't hear it being echoed) and finish with Enter. To change a bookmark location in the Menu, just cut it (Command-X) and paste it (Command-V), again on the bookmark immediately above where you want this one to be. To change the name or URL of a bookmark, select it and press VO-Shift-M for the application menu, where you'll find this and other options. Hope I managed to be clear :-) Cheers, André On Mar 16, 2011, at 10:38 PM, Laura Bratton wrote: > Hi Andre, > Once I have pressed command option B how do I make the changes that > you listed? > Thanks, > Laura > > Andre Nuno Soares wrote: >> Hello Laura, >> >> Command Option B displays all your bookmarks . Basically you were launching a program called sh and telling it to run the series of commands in the file websites and then terminate. The second way works but it also isn't running a script. In this case you are telling the Terminal shell to execute the series of commands in the file websites, which works for what you want, but doesn't run the script as a separate process and also doesn't, for instance, allow using a different shell in the script, like tcsh or even perl or python. To create a shell script, you must: 1) Create a text file with the "hash bang" in the first line, like: #!/bin/bash - note the exclamation mark (the bang) after the hash. Note also there's no spaces 2) Give the file execution permissions. 3) To run it, place the file in a directory in your PATH environment variable, or do something like: ./websites where ./ is interpreted by the shell as the current directory. If you had placed the file in a directory called scripts in your home, you could do: ~/scripts/websites or /Users/myuser/scripts/websites Hope my explanation wasn't too confusing :-) HTH, André >> -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Questions to ask
Hi, I'll answer your first two questions, since I'd have to check the list archives and/or experiment for the current best answer question 3 on creating signatures. Perhaps someone else could jump in here. Answers are interleaved after each question. On Mar 17, 2011, at 16:38, Cheok Cheng Ann wrote: > Can someone help me to answer the following questions: > 1. how does one sort out the mails according to dates received? • To sort mail by date received, navigate to the messages table of mail and interact, then navigate to the "Date Received" column and sort using the VO-Shift-Backslash keyboard shortcut if you are using an English language input keyboard. (The "Backslash" key is the rightmost key on an English input keyboard, just below the "Delete" key and above the "Return" key; Shift-Backslash is announced as "Vertical Line"). If you are using another language for your keyboard entry, you may need to bring up the VoiceOver Commands menu (VO-H twice), then find "Sort Columns" under the "Table" commands. Remember to interact before bringing up the Commands menu or trying to sort. The sort command works this way for all tables -- the columns you choose to sort can be filename entries in Finder, song names or albums in iTunes, etc. In each case you need to interact with the table, then move to the column you wish to sort, and apply the keyboard shortcut for sorting. If you apply the shortcut a second time, you will reverse the sort order (e.g., between ascending and descending). > 2. How does one jump from the list of mails from the top to the bottom? • In mail, the easiest way to move to either the top or bottom of the list is to hold down the Option key + up arrow (for the top) or down arrow (for the bottom), and just wait a little bit. You'll be moved from your present position to either the top or bottom of the list. (This tip is specific to mail.) Also, you should know that Option+up arrow or down arrow (not held down, but tapped) moves you to previous and next messages in a thread (whether or not you have chosen to organize your posts by thread in the "View" menu of mail). > 3. Please advise as to how to create signatures? • I'll leave this to someone else to follow up as the easiest away around the current bug. > Thank you. > > Regards, > > Cheok Cheng Ann HTH. Hi.
Hello everyone. This is my first time writing on this list. I bought my Macbook in November of this last year and loving it. I've hit some obstacles with this thing like not being able to watch some TV streams because Veetle is required and needs Firefox to run, but as for the rest of the stuff I do, I have no complaints. I read a post on Growl and I was wondering what it was. Is it only supposed to be used for Skype? And I've also been trying to edit my knickname on Mail but it's not doing it so how do I do that? By the way, I have a tip to get rid of the whole "Safari busy" message. If you call on the web item roter command repetetively, it'll eventually perform the command and the busy message goes away. Yes I get the message too, I get it a lot when I check the forums on Samnet. They should really make a Samnet client for us. Well anyway, looking forward to future messages from you guys. Have a good night. Shawn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com.
