Sarah, Interface Builder is part of the XCode developer package. It allows

Re: Slashdot, Macbook Pro teardowns show issues

2011-03-01 Thread Scott Howell
The question that should be asked is how many machines did they tear down. Out
of the overall number of machines produced/assembled, how many have quality
issues. The statements made are somewhat ridiculous because price point has
nothing to do with it. YOu could purchase a $100,000 car and find sloppy work
just as easily in the $20,000 car. If they did a tear down on 10 or 20 machines
I would say there is a question about quality that needs to be addressed. Of
course hopefully APple takes note and monitors perhaps the facility where that
machine originated to ensure proper quality standards are being met.

Any hidden Gotchas when installing more RAM in a MacBook?

2011-03-01 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

I was just at a MacShop the other day and bought more RAM (DDR3 variety) for my
MacBook which I purchased two years ago. I currently have 2 GB of memory and
will soon have 4 GB.

I am wondering If I need to make any changes to Snow Leopard prior or after
installing the new RAM. Will my system just boot up normally, or do I need to
make other changes? I also have VMWare Fusion and would like to allocate more
memory for XP, once the new memory has been installed. Is this a
straightforward process or will I need to re-install Windows XP under VMWare
fusion?

Many thanks,

Mike

Re: Any hidden Gotchas when installing more RAM in a MacBook?

2011-03-01 Thread Scott Howell
Mike,

You do not need to change anything on your Mac and you do not need to reinstall
windows. You only need to go into Fusion and edit the configuration for the VM
and give it more memory.

Hi Donna,
One of the options you can adjust with vo-v is how VO handles text attribute
changes. It can speak them or play a tone, or the default of do nothing.
Hope this helps,
Zack.

RE: RFB&D Releases RFB&D Audio iOS App

I think this is an awesome development, and easily worth $20 -- I haven't
tried the app yet, but I will... It just might bring me back to RFB&D again,
a service I haven't used in many years. I just hope it isn't under-cooked,
that they didn't roll it out too soon and that it won't be as functional as
it could be.

Hi Zack,

It did help, at least I was able to check the font of my document. I was sort
of hoping for something like the JAWS Insert-F command, which allows you to
check the attributes of a selection, without having attributes being spoken all
the time.
Thanks,
Donna

Re: Can VO speak formatting attributes?

2011-03-01 Thread Tim Kilburn
Donna,

Is VO-t what you're looking for? When you press VO-t, you get the attributes
of the text item you are focused on including style (Bold, Italic etc), Font,
colour, and size.

Hello Donna.
VO T will give you the formatting attributes of the highlighted text.
Have you tried Command + Z to undue? It's kind of like windows that way where
it's Command + C to copy versus Control + C in windows.
Hope this helps.

Re: Two questions about Audio Hijack

2011-03-01 Thread Michael Busboom
To those of you who answered my questions about Audio Hijack in conjunction
with Skype, thank you!

1. I erased the second Skype entry in the components list, but I was initially
alarmed by the result. The Components list disappeared. However, clicking on
New Session restored it in its entirety.

2. As soon as I erased the second Skype entry in the components list, I was
once again able to interact with the toolbar.

So all's well that ends well, and I thank all of you.

have started to occur that I don't understand.

 1. In the component session, there are now two entries for Skype, and I
never know which one of these components is actually hijacking the Skype
audio. I used to be able to determine this, but no longer.

 2. Voice Over no longer interacts with the Audio Hijack toolbar in either
Skype entry in the components table.

Thus: Is it possible to erase one of the Skype entries? And can I do
something to once again make VO interact with the toolbar so that I can
split recordings, etc.? Lastly, if I can somehow erase one of the Skype
entries in the components table, will my macro still work?

 Thanks a million,

Re: blackboard and Safari

2011-03-01 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
I also would be very interested to know if Blackboard can be accessed with
Safari. Angel, another online course management system, is not accessible with
Safari, so I am having to use Windows and the System Access screen reader to
use Angel. If Blackboard is not accessible in Safari, perhaps your student can
access it in Windows.

Safari and Blackboard work ok for the most part. There are some issues, but can
be used to some degree.

Hi everyone:
I am writing in an attempt to clarify something I tried to get across in my

Messages that are really responding to one person are what make the traffic on

setup for replying to list

2011-03-01 Thread Alex Hall
Hello,
In response to a recent thread about keeping one-line "thank-yous" and
similar content off the list, I would like to make a suggestion.
Currently, replying to the sender or replying to all will send a copy
of the message to the list. However, some lists I am on are set up so
that replying to the sender will do just that, reply only to the
sender of the message. To send a message to the list, one must reply
to all. This is a great setup as it allows posters to very easily take
a conversation off the list and keep it going privately; to do so, one
party needs only to reply to sender, instead of reply to all, and the
rest of the list will not see the subsequent messages (unless someone
copies the list address on a message for some reason).
What do people think of setting up this list that way, if possible?

Re: setup for replying to list

2011-03-01 Thread Anne Robertson
On the Mac, Cmd-R is simply Reply, not Reply to Sender.

Reply to Sender is found in the contextual menu you can access by interacting
with Message Headers and navigating right to the From field. It really isn't
hard to do.

Cheers,

Anne

Interesting idea although I've seen it go horribly wrong.

You get responses going where they shouldn't because it's not intuitive.

If all e-mailing lists that I am on were the same for reply it would be very

Skype cutting out once a call is made and ended

2011-03-01 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter
Running the Skype 5 stable version, I notice that, if someone calls me and then
hangs up, ending the call, the *NEXT* call I get is plagued with a clicking,
cutting-out over-compression problems, so that my caller can't understand me.
Quitting and relaunching Skype seems to resolve the problem. This leads me to
believe this might be something other Skype 5 Mac users are experiencing...

quickly skip to a dictionary, or a specific command within.

For example, while skype.sdef is open, I interact with the table and expand it
to find a level 1 item named: "send". Regardless which item in the table is
selected, when I tab to and interact with the HTML item my focus is at the very
top (Standard Suite).

TIA for any/all suggestions.
Geoff

housekeeping: was: setup for replying to list

2011-03-01 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi again:
Good points being made here. And, I don't know yet whether there's something
in group settings that would accomplish Alex's idea. In the mean time, to
reply to an individual, what works for me is to use cmd-y to add sender to
address book, cmd-N for new message, and type the first couple letters of the
sender's name.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Re: housekeping: set-up for replying to list

2011-03-01 Thread Justin Ekis
I personally would not like this at all. Most of the time, I want my reply to
go to the list. I think that the default for the reply hotkey should be the
most commonly preferred action. We would have people sending answers to
questions only to the original poster. It would have to be explained to every
new member that the reply button does not do what is generally expected on a
list of this type. Some people don't even read the welcome message, since it's
usually the same instructions. This would complicate more than it would solve.
Please do not change how list replies work just to avoid a few one-line replies
coming to the list.

Re: housekeping: set-up for replying to list

2011-03-01 Thread Donna Goodin
Personally I like the way the list is set up now. The vast majority of replies
that one sends should be going to the list. It's easier to change on those
occasions where you want to send something specifically to the sender, since
there are fewer of those situations.
Best,
Donna

2011-03-01 Thread Geoff Waaler
Greetings y'all,

Not to worry Donna -- I believe this subject came up earlier and long before I
began assisting Cara as a mod it was decided for many reasons sited earlier in
this thread that the list would function as it presently does.

Please take up any/all concerns on individual vs list reply with the moderator
team which now consists of Cara, Carolyn and myself as the active and visible
members.

Select the linksys network in the airport listing, click more information and
then click forget this network.

That should do the trick.

Bring your mouse cursor to your VO cursor (VO-Cmd-F5), then hold down the
Control key and click the mouse/trackpad to get a contextual menu where you'll
find a number of choices.

I just purchased a new Apple keyboard today and like it very much.
However, I have one question; there are four buttons that are
elongated; two are the up/down volume buttons; one is to stop the
audio stream from playing; press again, and it will resume playing.
the other button does nothing when in Keyboard Practice. What is the

Re: setup for replying to list

Oh, wow, I've never done it that way. I do VO-Shift-right in from field to
highlight the sender's address, then select the context menu (VO-Shift-M) and
then arrow down to reply to sender.

Re: setup for replying to list

2011-03-01 Thread Pete Nalda
Ok here's what I do. One list I'm on only defaults to the sender only. If I
want to reply to the group I have to navigate up to the to field then change
it. Couldn't this be done by first copying the senders address then replacing
the group address with that?

Re: Can VO speak formatting attributes?

2011-03-01 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

What I mean by Ruler area is, when in TextEdit, if you Stop Interacting with
the Edit area and navigate around you'll hear VO read Ruler. Interact With
that area and it will give you pop-up menus for Styles, List types, Paragraph
spacing, Ruler markers and tab controls and such.

Later...

Well, now I seem to have my whole document formatted as a list. Yikes!
Does anyone know how I can undo that? Also, is there some way to have VO

 Thanks,

Re: blackboard and Safari

2011-03-01 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
The problem is that Angel does not support Safari. In other words, it's not a
VoiceOver issue. If Explorer or FireFox were accessible with VO, you would be
able to use them, since Angel supports these browsers.

In the short-term, I'm afraid your only options are to use Windows or, maybe,
Ubuntu Linux. In the longer-term, it may be worth our while to write to Angel,
asking them to begin supporting Safari. Something to consider, anyway.

Ok here's what I do. One list I'm on only defaults to the sender only. If I
want to reply to the group I have to navigate up to the to field then change
it. Couldn't this be done by first copying the senders address then replacing
the group address with that?

I think it's a great idea, and I do apologize for my congratulations email that
went to the whole list. I really meant to send it privately and just wasn't
thinking. Thanks for all the mods do to keep this vast and informative list
running so smoothly. :)

When you are in the podcast on the bottom right there is a button called action

Ok here's what I do. One list I'm on only defaults to the sender only.
If I want to reply to the group I have to navigate up to the to field then
change it. Couldn't this be done by first copying the senders address
then replacing the group address with that?

Re: Verizon to Drop Unlimited iPhone Data Plans as Soon as This Summer

2011-03-01 Thread James Mannion
I really think it is because mobile networks are not able yet to
handel people putting unlimited demands for data access on them. Any
network has its upper limits and mobile networks are still less able
to handel demand than land line networks. If they put limits that
serve a purpose, but are not over limiting, that keeps people from
constantly doing things like streaming the most data intensive video
stuff and whatever else they can fid with no concern of any
consequences to themselves, bringing down the entire network so nobody
can do anything and then everybody is left unhappy. People will be a
little more reasonable with what they do if there is a cost to them.
Having said that, AT&T's netwrk can not even handel the limited use in
some areas including the city where I live. During the day I can not
even pull up a small web page on AT&T's 3g network. It simply times
out. I can not stream pandora, I can barely use the weather app to
pull its small amount of data. Since my contract is almost up, I have
signed on with Verizon and I can tell you that right now their network
actually works in my area. My understanding is that this exact
situation is not uncommon at all. Maybe Verizon will manage their
resources and growth in a way that does not create another AT&T.

signing in to me.com

2011-03-01 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Hi all.

I am in flight again, this time on Southwest, and trying to log in for the
first time to my mobile me account. All I hear each time Safari gets focus is
safari busy. Yet when I leave focus and command tab over to mail, safari seems
to straighten itself out. Is this possibly because I am on a slower satellite
link perhaps? Or, have others had this issue with me.com.

Thanks so much.

Marlaina, up in the air with her MacBook Air yet again.

Re: signing in to me.com

2011-03-01 Thread Esther
Hi Marlaina,

I think I originally posted this on the viphone list in answer to Scott Howell,
so that means searching the archives would have to be done with the Google
Groups web pages and the post could be hard to locate, but the way to avoid
extraneous busy activity when logging into the MobileMe web site is to append
the section you want to log into at the end of the address. That means that
you add a slash and then "account", or "mail", or "find" (for "Find My
iPhone"), or "calendar", etc. like this:
http://www.me.com/account
http://www.me.com/mail
http://www.me.com/find

The address will resolve to a secure web address once your enter it into the
Safari address field (e.g., if you used Command-L to move to the address field
and typed this in, you'll get pointed to an address that begins with "https://";
instead of the normal "http://"; without the "s" at the end of "http"). I think
that normally the main web page runs a javascript for your selection of the
area of MobileMe you want, and this leads to busy messages. The other way you
could get to your accounts screen is by going to the "MobileMe" menu in "System
Preferences" (Control-F2 or VO-M to the menu bar, arrow down, press "s y" to
"System Preferences", then navigate to "MobileMe" and VO-Space). I don't know
whether you've already set up MobileMe for your computer. On systems with no
MobileMe setup, there will be a login that lets you sign in with your Member
Name (e.g. ) and password in the text boxes, and then
a "Sign In" button you can press (VO-Space). The other part of that pane will
be a "Try MobileMe" side with button to a web page for trial subscription. If
you have signed into MobileMe, then you'll find instead four tabs -- "Account",
"Sync", "iWeb", and "Back to My Mac". Pressing the button for "Account
Details" on the "Account" tab basically takes you to the Safari Login page for
MobileMe, and will open up in your Account page after you log in. (I find it
easier to just type the MobileMe URL address with the appended slash and
"account", as described earlier, but this will also work.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Creating/Managing Databases

2011-03-01 Thread Kevin Chao
All,

I'm having to work with a variety of databases, which are in Access 2007
format. What's a good and accessible database creator/management application on
Mac OS X and VoiceOver?

If you are able to, not only recommend an application, but also have experience
with it; it would be absolutely fantastic.

Thanks,

Kevin

OmniOutliner by Omni Group

2011-03-01 Thread Kevin Chao
Omni Group has OmniOutliner for Mac OS X and iOS. I've got free trial of pro
version for Mac OS X.

I've found out that most of UI is accessible, but level info, such as in
parent, child, sub-child etc are not provided. This makes it very difficult,
if not impossible to work in an outline.

Has anyone else had experience with OmniOutliner on Mac OS X or iOS with
VoiceOver? Omni Group is a much raved about company with their productivity
apps in Apple Mac OS X and iOS world.

Thanks,

Kevin

FileMaker

2011-03-01 Thread Kevin Chao
FileMaker seems to be well reviewed and respected as a database/server app on
Mac OS X.

I'm getting it. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with FileMaker and
could provide pointers with
VoiceOver

Thanks,

Kevin

laufland but that's expected. I'm 57 hundred feet in the air lol! but we'll
see. the article was an interesting read and I have heard commments off list
aht this i sactualy a good move that VZ is making as they have most of there
customer base switched over already. Hopefully at&t and who ever else might get
the iphone will have better bandwith because of those that left. hope I'm
