Re: new to mac gaming need help
It would help if you saved the getgames.sh script from this message. It'll be between the two cut here lines. What it does is to use rsync to download the whole ifarchive game set and keep it up to date when run again. It makes an ifarchive folder tree in your user directory and under the ifarchive folder in the starters folder will be found software to play these games. You'll need to wait a while wile the whole 4gb+ archive is downloaded at first but future updates only download changed or new material so they'll be shorter. This was shared on the speakup mailing list and works on the mac too. cut here: #!/bin/bash rsync -rlptDv --bwlimit=0 --timeout=300 --partial --delete \ ibiblio.org::pub/docs/interactive-fiction/ ~/ifarchive cut here: On Wed, 19 Jan 2011, Carolyn Haas wrote: Hi Ed: Welcome. Re: chopping samples in garage band
Sure. It won't automate the process like in guru of course but, you can do a pretty good job of it in GB6. I actually demonstrate chopping up a drum sample in part 3 of the GB6 audio tutorial. You can listen here. http://goo.gl/HFDM4 Now let me try to explain it with words. :). I hope I don't confuse everyone. Lets say you have a 2 bar drum sample and you only want the first bar. You navigate to the beginning of bar 2 on the timeline. Now press command T to split the region. In this case, it will split your 2 bar loop clean in half. Now if you are interacting with the arrange layout area/time group/instrument tracks, you will now see 2 regions for your drum sample. When your on the region that starts at bar 1 beat 1, and ends at bar 2 beat 1, press the delete key. That section of the drum sample will be erased if thats what you want to do. You can also copy the region you want, create a new real instrument track , and paste the copied region on there. So then you could for example, stretch that 1st bar of the drum sample into a 3 bar loop, and add the 2nd bar of your drum sample at the end to make a 4 bar loop. unwanted solicitations
Hi everyone: I'm a little concerned that someone is procuring info from this list to launch what I consider a form of spam; namely unsolicited emails about accessible games. I've gotten 3 emails in a very short period of time from "dumadu games." Maybe I'm being paranoyed or just grouchy. This AM I reinstalled Snow Leopard and can no longer reproduce the problem. Very strange since it really appeared to be associated with my router. Thanks for everyone's help on this. As noted before all attempts to check for updates appear to time out and issue the error message documented initially. When I ping the address from windows I receive a reply from a different IP "208.68.143.55", though it also hangs when I attempt to enter that URL from either Mozilla or MSIE. The problem disappears when I remove the router and connect directly to my cable modem. Very strange since until recently I had no problems while attached wirelessly via my DLink 655. Except for the fact that my problem is with access to the webkit site, this is really a network issue, hence is probably OT here. audible.com mac os and book port authorization
Hi all. I had to get a new SD card for my book port plus which stopped recognizing the previous card. I am now at a block in the road because I cannot figure out how to authorize my book port plus using my air. I know there is a small file that gets put onto the sd card, and since the previous card still works on the air but not the book port, I looked for that file and can't find it. The new card is working happily with nls books, but what do I need to do in the mac environment to authorize book port plus or the sd card so that I can listen to my audible books? I feel like I should know this, but I do not. Any help will be appreciated. Marlaina -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: audible.com mac os and book port authorization
you're not the only one. The simple fact is this. It cannot be done at all on the Mac side. The work around is to manually create the folder in to which Audible books will go and then make sure you bring over the Audibleactivate.sys file from the old card to the new one. Re: audible.com mac os and book port authorization
On the windows side, that file is indeed hidden. You can expose it quiet easily, however. Make sure you copy that audibleactivate.sys file in to a place where you know where it is and can get at it when you need to drop it in to a new card. For example, with the Victor Reader Stream, for every card you want to authorize, you must manually create the $VRAudible folder and drop in the Audibleactivate.sys file in to that folder. That is absolutely the one and only solution until Humanware comes out with an update which allows Mac users to Authorise Audible.com book playback more directly. Meanwhile, be careful you don't go losing that file. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now A Very Proud and very happy Mac user!!! Re: audible.com mac os and book port authorization
Originally, this special .sys file is created when you use activate your player using the Audible.com manager on the windows side. That is why you want to be careful not to lose it once you've got it. At the moment, the only way to Authorise a new player if you have no prior authorization and thus no .sys file is to do it on the windows side. This means either have a windows PC or lap top at hand, or else install windows on your Mac. Sincerely, The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!! Now A Very Proud and very happy Mac user!!! Gee, have you considered that maybe Apple doesn't want you mucking about in there and then trying to claim the device has some sort of flaw, which means they would have to replace or repair it? There is a reason why they don't want the average person messing with the internals. Re: audible.com mac os and book port authorization
I don't know a lot about the finder, but is it possible that the AudibleActivation.sys file is hidden? that is, it's on the original card, but not being shown by the finder? You might try opening a terminal and exploring the card looking for the file. Worst case, you'll need to download the audible manager application to your mac and reauthorize your new card. Mike, that may be true but that does not help me solve the problem of getting the audible books on the new card to where I can play them. Thanks for the reformatting idea though. That is the file I do not see. Is there a way to show hidden files because I think this one is well and truly hidden! I see the book port plus stuff such as recent titles and so on, I see all the books but no audible activation file. I will take this to windows on my pc if I have do, but really hope somebody here can tell me how to expose a hidden file like this one. So, Ray says the file isn't hidden. So, if you don't see it in the root directory of your old SD card, then it sounds like maybe it is no longer there. Re: Apple "screwing" iPhone users to block them from opening the hardware they paid for.
If someone has that knowledge then they would have the tools to remove the screws. However, again, the point is to keep people like you who do not have the knowledge from attempting to replace batteries and the like, but ends up breaking the device. You know your limitations, but some do not. Btw, this is pretty old news actually. Although I am not a lawyer, I'm pretty certain that some of these devices are covered by patents and the like that would disallow modifications or reverse engineering of the hardware. Jail breaking might be ok, but modifying the hardware would not. Any computer whether it's a pc or a mac will slow down if it's start up disk is full. Re: Apple "screwing" iPhone users to block them from opening the hardware they paid for.
ahem, I think not. the smarter than average thinker will think it unwise to tinker with such an investment. I have note even read it, and i find the concept hilarious! Actually its rather common for them makers of electronics to strongly suggest that opening them up to have a look is a very bad idea. I for one prefer things like my television refrigerator and yes even my iphone if I had one kept closed. I feel such devices deserve the respect of keeping their innards private. Re: audible.com mac os and book port authorization
Well, I plan to write Apple's accessibility team and see if there isn't something that can be done in iTunes to address this issue. We should be able to put the user key on our players. Failing that, perhaps Audible will be receptive to generating a key for other players. I have an iPHone and a Mac, but I also have a Stream. What do other people who have players like Zune and Creative Zen and stuff do when they want to put an audible book on from their Mac? Can they even do that? It seems like a rather serious problem. Re: [Bulk] Re: audible.com mac os and book port authorization
Well, truth to tell, Audible did not appear very receptive to the idea of their helping much to solve our delema. They the rep I talked to implied very strongly that it was the job of the player's manufacture to deal with that. I, on the other hand, felt that Audible should be helping more because, after all, it's the audible activation.sys file we're talking about here. Humanware tells me they're aware of the issue; and, in the intrest of full disclosure, I did ask them about coming up with an update which would allow the Stream to be authorised via using Apple machines without having to install windows. that is entirely likely Sarah. a lack of space for system maintenance tasks can cause a severe performance hit on any system (not just OS X). this is why I usually save off a lot of my files to a network drive. anything that I want to save long term goes either onto optical media, or large memory sticks. -Eric On Jan 20, 2011, at 5:21 PM, Sarah Alawami wrote: > Hey all my start up disk is almost full and I notice some very sluggish > behavior everywhere. Greetings, After reinstalling SnowLeopard I receive the following upon system startup: Insecure startup item disabled. “/Library/StartupItems/HP Trap Monitor” has not been started because it does not have the proper security settings. According to my friendly search engin, similar problems were resolved by verifying that the permissions for the folder and all items within were set to: System=Read/Write Admin and everyone = ReadOnly. This solution is not working here and I didn't see anything else that matched the problem as closely. TIA for any other suggestions. oh. do you have the ability to plug in a USB device on that machine? if you can offload some of the large files (like videos, music, etc) it should free up some space for the system to use. -Eric On Jan 20, 2011, at 9:01 PM, Sarah Alawami wrote: > Ah I don't have a router anymore.
