Re: IPad questions

2010-12-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

You can't have the keyboard hooked up to the iPhone and iPad at the same time.
So try turning bluetooth off on your iPhone before pairing the keyboard to your
iPad.

Re: iphone 3 gs question:

2010-12-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

When you open up iTunes, and navigate to your iPhone in the sources table, you
don't press VO up or down arrow to expand it. You just press the right arrow
to expand, and the left to close. And for your other question, Go to the file
menu and select transfer purchases from iPod/iPhone/iPad. Depending on which
device you have.

Organizing the Applications Folder into Sub-folders?

2010-12-26 Thread Teresa Cochran
I'm beginning to accumulate lots of applications, and forgetting some of their
names, especially the games. Is there a way to organize games and other
applications into subfolders on the dock or in the Applications folder?

Thanks,

Re: Problems with columns in Apple mail after formattting Mac Book Pro.

2010-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kawal et al,

My mail view is, from left to right, Status, From, Subject, Date. I'm leaving
out the disclosure and attachment symbols.

Kawal, it may be necessary to have a sighted person use the Mouse to select the
entire column and then drag it to the correct location.

There must be a way to do this with VoiceOver but, at present, I do not know
how.

Perhaps a note to the accessibility team would be in order here.

Re: need help

2010-12-26 Thread M. Taylor
Hello, Max.

The only thing I notice since updating to the latest version of the Mac OS is
the fact that sometimes VoiceOver stops speaking for no apparent reason.

I am fortunate enough to have sufficient residual vision to be able to see the
VoiceOver cursor on my MacBook Pro to be able to confidently switch back to
Finder and then use the Command+F5 sequence in order to first disable and then
re-enable VoiceOver.

For a totally blind person, this would be ten times more frustrating.

Re: Organizing the Applications Folder into Sub-folders?

2010-12-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I don't know about the doc but, its very easy to do in the application folder.
from the finder press Command shift A to open the application folder. Then
Press command shift N to create a new folder. And edit field will appear with
untitled folder in it. Erase that, and name the folder and press return. Now
the folder is in you application folder. Now its just a matter of copy and
pasting the apps you want to the folder and then deleting the original apps
that remain in applications

Keyboard commander helps

2010-12-26 Thread Colin M
Hi all!
Some of you know this already!
And some of you use track pad or number commander!
But after all this time I took the plunge and looked at keyboard commander! :]
I've now got that finger twister vo+fn+shift+left or right arrows down to right
option+b for [go to beginning] and right option+e for [end]
It was easy to set up!And as a bonus I now have right option+m for mail, right
opt+s for safari, right opt+t for time and right+x for voiceover screenshot to
apple [ if I ever need it]
and right opt+u for unread message count!
And It looks like you can set up loads as long as the keys are available!
Now just in case someone needs to know!
I started with opening vo+f8, then interacted with the categories table
scrolled down to commanders and stopped interacting!
Then selected the keyboard tab and then checked the enable keyboard commander!
Next you have the option to pick which option key you want to use [ it looks
like the right option key is picked by default] but you could choose the left
if you think it would be better for you!
I then went to the table of commands there was the time, safari, mail and the
other 2!
Next to the table is an add button vo+space on that then you get a menu of all
the vo things so I went to navigation and selected go to beginning vo+space
then left arrow where you can type the letter you want [ for me the letter b]
Then I did the same for end but the letter e of course! :]
And low and behold it works!
So have a play who knows what help it will give you!

Re: apple mail question

2010-12-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi Carolyn,

I finally got the option up/down arrow to work. lol. I just wasn't patient
enough. Hold down the option up/down key until you hear the bonk noise. Keep
them held down for another second and it will bring you to the top/bottom of
the messages list.

Hello folks,
In windows, in Outlook express I can block senders of spam etc etc. Is there
a way to do this in Apple mail? For example: I just blocked a cigarette

Believe it or not, I use the most archaic method of pressing
Shift+Function+VO+arrow key to jump.

I know it sounds crazy but I've gotten used to it and I don't have to
think about it. I've tried to use the easier methods but cannot get them
right on the first try.

question about apple fitness equipment and iPhone 4

2010-12-26 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Will the apple fitness equipment, such as the heart monitor and pedometer, work
with the iPhone 4 and if so, when one buys the hardware from the apple store,
does the software come with it or does one then go to the app store for the
software?

Happy day after Christmas.

Re: IPad questions

2010-12-26 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Carilyn,

When I was using an ipad, I just got use to the dismiss pop up thing. It seems
to see things like the inbox as a pop up. Don't ask me why. But, if you just
flick pat it, it won't bug you as I recall.

As for your question about changing archive to delete in the mail app, I have
the same question from the perspective of my iPhone 4. It seems that with the
last update, I lost the ability to choose delete in my settings for the mail
app. Therefore, I'm eager also to find the answer to this and was going to
post that question here one of these days.

I, too had difficulty with my apple bluetooth keyboard and ipad. My problem
was that it would pair ok, but sometimes it would unpair while I was using it
and I didn't know it. Also, I had the devil's own time using pages on the
iPad. I hope you have better success than I did; my husband now has and loves
the ipad and I have the Mac Book Air and love it so the story ended up happily
ever after for us. I know several blind folks who love love love their ipad,
but it just never worked out well for me.

I then went to the table of commands there was the time, safari, mail and the
other 2!
Next to the table is an add button vo+space on that then you get a menu of all
the vo things so I went to navigation and selected go to beginning vo+space

Re: Keyboard commander helps

2010-12-26 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Wow, I did it. This is fabulous. I'll have to play more with this. One thing
I discovered though is that my go to beginning does take me to the first email,
but my go to end takes me to the last column of the last email which is
attachments. Should I have used something other than go to beginning and go to
end to define the b and e keys? Also, is there any way to speed Alex up as he
slowly reads the date and time?

Thanks for this, Colin.

Hi Jane:
I'm assuming you mean with itunes? If that's the case, you should have a

check "view your account," to see if there's info there about your purchases.
Otherwise, you can dumpster dive for those little receipts iTunes emails you

Good evening Courtney,
To compile an Apple script, you will need to copy the script code in the
original message to your clipboard.
Next, navigate to your utilities folder and launch the Apple script editor
utility.
Once the Apple script editor utility opens, navigate to the script source field
within the utility and past the script from the clipboard.
Once the script has been pasted from clipboard, press: command+K to compile the
script.
If the script compiled successfully, VO will announce "Compile," alternatively,
if the script was not copied in its entirety, you will receive potential errors.
Assuming the script compiled successfully, you can save the script to any
location by pressing command+shift+S using the default settings.

Hope this helps.

2010-12-26 Thread Carolyn Haas
Hi guys:
As usual, I'm trying to do everything at once. I was going to download ibooks,
but read some pretty poor reviews of the latest version. Does anyone have a
link to the previous one? TIA

Ok,

Then try deleting the keyboard information from the iPhone. In bluetooth,
double tap the more info button then select forget device.

Ok, it's gotten terrible reviews in the app store, it's page is littered with

iBooks has no issues for me, either. Maybe it' sighted users that are frusted
with the interface or the sorting method or something. I like it, though, I
just haven't explored all its new features, yet, well sorting stuff in to
collections is a new feature. :) It reads books just fine, you can go
page-by-page or have it scroll continuously.

Strange Issue with Macbook Pro

2010-12-26 Thread Dan Roy
This isn't Vo related, however, it is definitely Apple! This might be a bit
off-topic fir this list. However, this type of thing has come up before and
people have been willing to help. I hope, in this case, someone has an answer.

Recently, there was a thread on battery maintenance, and, just like Apple
suggests, once a month, i leave the macbook pro on battery power until the
battery completely drains. Well, I have done this several times and no issues.
thursday night, I did the same as usual and left the macbook running on
battery power. I had it streaming something so it wouldn't go to sleep.
however, the only thing different this time was that I got busy the next day
and didn't come back to check it until yesterday morning. Well, of course, as
expected, it was totally dead. So, as usual, I plugged in the charger and
attempted to power up. The macbook wouldn't turn on at all. It acted like it
would if the battery was dead, but, the charger was powered on now! Well, it
was Christmas and I didn't have a great deal of time to mess with it. So, I
left the charger connected and went about my Christmas activities. I came back
to it last night, the same thing, totally dead. I removed the charger and
tried a different AC outlet with the vary same results.

i checked things out with my sighted spouse, she said no charger light, nothing
at all. So, I have no idea what could have happened. i know, the charger
could have suddenly gone bad or any number of other things as well. Before I
fight the madness at the apple store, I wanted to check to see if anyone here
has ever experienced something like this and, if so, what if anything did you
try to solve the problem.

Again, the MBp was working just fine until I ran the battery all the way down.
I have done this several times before. The only thing different was i left it
on long after the battery had gone dead. This shouldn't make any difference
because, usually, the MBP just shuts down when the battery power is to low.

Any ideas at all would be appreciated, thanks!

Re: Finding out Battery status

2010-12-26 Thread Colin M
Hi Marlaina!
Now you have your vo controlled by apple scripts and you have keyboard
commander running!
If you go to the table of vo things after picking add new command in the
commander tab, scroll down to the bottom and there is custom!
In there is a applescript menu I suppose in there should be this script you've
just compiled and then after vo+space on it you should then be able to give it
a letter and from then on to use it just press the right opt and the letter you
chosen!
PS no you did not pick the wrong thing for end!
That is the one normally used when doing vo+fn+shift+right arrow!
Which one will keep you in the same column like opt+up arrow does I do not know!

You might try to reset the SMC, or system Manager Controller. This is like CMoS
setup reset on the pc side. Different machine has different way of doing this.
So visit the following link, find your machine, and follow the instruction.
This does not harm your system by any means.

Re: Strange Issue with Macbook Pro

2010-12-26 Thread Eric Oyen
the pram may need to be reset. there should be a recessed reset button
somewhere on the back of that machine. mind you, I am operating from the old
powerbook instructions so it might not be correct.

you might also see if there is anyone in your area with the same model and see
if their charger works. if it does, then your charger is dead. if not, then its
something inside your MBP that needs to be reset or replaced.

Re: Organizing the Applications Folder into Sub-folders?

2010-12-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Yeah it does.

Its not a big deal though. Just Remove the apps from the doc you've moved into
folders in the application folder then, go to the apps you've added to your
folders and press Command Shift T to add them back to the doc.

Thanks for this info. I have two questions.
I want to use the letter d to open up the documents folder but I
couldn't figure out how to do this. I did not see documents as a
choice under applications.
Also, Is there a way to use the left option key for some of the
short cut keys and right option for others? or does it all have to be
one or the other?
Thanks,

Also haven't seen any of my mails from the ipad get here successfully yet.

Either way, I'm making progress.

Re: Keyboard commander helps

2010-12-26 Thread Colin M
Hi Laura!
It looks like you have to have one or the other!
Now for d for documents!
This also looks like you have to select a puristic file within documents, when
you get to custom select open file and you'll be in a menu to choose from
documents there is a select file button and in there you can pick which file
you want to open!
I could not see how to make it open on documents itself!
So maybe that is one thing you cannot do with keyboard commander!
Unless someone else knows better! :]

It shouldn't. Mac's use "alias" which is more powerful then UNIX symlinks or

Re: IPad questions

2010-12-26 Thread Garth
Hi Caroline

The dismiss popup thing may make more sense to you if you try
exploring the screen by running your finger around rather then
swiping. I am not saying that you are just swiping but it helped me to
explore this way as well as swiping. The dismiss popup can be thought
of as a back button if you like. Try going into mail and double
tapping on the Reply button. You will get a popup in the top right
hand corner. It is like a little menu that has various options, ie
Reply, Reply All, Forward and Print. These options are below each
other in a popup window. So if I had hit the Reply button instead of
the Delete button and then wanted to cancel I could touch anywhere
else on the screen other then in the popup menu and VO would say
double tap to dismiss popup. To me this is a very useful feature, it
just takes time to get use to.

I hope this makes sense. My explinations are not always the easiest to
follow or at least that is what my wife says *smile*

It said to disconnect the power source, hold down the power button for 5
seconds and then reconnect the charger, nothing, no power, zero response. I do
appreciate the help!

Re: Keyboard commander helps

2010-12-26 Thread Colin M
Hi Marlaina! and anyone else who might be interested!
I've found the way to use keyboard commander to move to the top and bottom
staying in the same column!
When you get to the part where you are going to set a new shortcut key!
Select the jump menu in the table of commands, then pick bottom most item!
Then pick a key for it [ I've picked the number 2 key]
Then just repeat but pick top most item not the topmost visible item or bottom
most visible item!
And of course I've selected number 1 for the top!
So in the subject field if I now press right arrow+2 I get to the last message
and I'm still in the subject field!

Hi Garth:
This actually makes some sense. I've been more of a screen drag/explorer ever

pop-up window. But, then again, if you want to jump back out of a message, I
guess that makes sense too.:)

Sorting music in iTunes

2010-12-26 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
All:
Remember when I wrote in saying that when I transferred music to my iPhone 4,
that the iPod would have the same album listed 4 times with a couple of songs
in each folder, or have the same album name, but have artists written as Chris
Tomlin F/T Christi Nicol, instead of written as Chris Tomlin? I said iTunes
wasn't the issue, and all artists and albums were correct in iTunes. The issue
happens when I sync over to my phone.
Well, I received my new iPod Nano 16GB 6th gen player for Christmas. When I
transfer music, it transfers correctly. I even transferred compilation CDS, and
those were correct. The issue appears to be the iPod player on my phone, not
the tagging of my music. So, sense this has been discovered, how can I fix this?

Re: Finding out Battery status

Colin,

Do I need to save this script in a special location I named it battery read
and saved it initially in documents; when I did not see that after following
your instructions, I made a copy and put it into my scripts folder. I still do
not see it under custom.

If you go to the table of vo things after picking add new command in the

In there is a applescript menu I suppose in there should be this script you've
just compiled and then after vo+space on it you should then be able to give it
a letter and from then on to use it just press the right opt and the letter you
chosen!
PS no you did not pick the wrong thing for end!
That is the one normally used when doing vo+fn+shift+right arrow!
Which one will keep you in the same column like opt+up arrow does I do not know!

off topic kindle question

2010-12-26 Thread Maxwell Ivey Jr.
Hello list; I just got the surprise of my life. my family went and
bought be the latest version of the kindle. I've been doing some
reading, and I'm starting to get encouraged. It has a query keyboard
and the website says it has text to speech and spoken navigation. You
have to get a sighted person to turn it on, but it says it has it. I
have it charging right now and am looking forward to trying it. I
hope it does work as it has a browser in addition to the kindle
features. who knows this puppy may eventually replace my laptop.
doubt it, but it would be cool if it did. will let you know what
happens. take care, Max

question about garage band

I am writing with a question about a feature in Garage Band 6. There is
feature in the program that allows the user to enter notes by using the QWERTY
keyboard instead of the usual external midi controller. I, however, have been
unsuccessful in getting this feature to work when using Voice Over. Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Max, the browser is totally inaccessible. YOu can't shop the Kindle store on
that device. You'll have to shop with your computer or use the IPhone app which
is accessible for shopping but not for reading, thanks Amazon. And when you
shop, be sure to check on the book's page to make sure that text to speech is

Max, the browser is totally inaccessible. YOu can't shop the Kindle
store on that device. You'll have to shop with your computer or use
the IPhone app which is accessible for shopping but not for
reading, thanks Amazon. And when you shop, be sure to check on the
book's page to make sure that text to speech is enabled. Many books
are, many are not. And if the book you want has text to speech
disabled, you will not be able to read it on your half-accessible
Kindle.

Moderator note - IMPORTANT - Please read -was- Re: off topic kindle question

2010-12-26 Thread Cara Quinn
Hello All;

-Two things here:

1 If we can keep this on the topic of the Kindle apps for the iDevices or keep
this somehow Apple-related, then this is fine to continue here, otherwise,
PLEASE DO NOT POST OT NOTES HERE!

2 there's absolutely no need of colorful language in this or really any thread
here. this list is open to all age groups and backgrounds, so I'm asking that
we take it easy on the profanity, K? -Bare in mind that while I personally may
be okay with the occasional very generic hell or damn sort of thing, there are
many on this list whom may not be. So obviously, anything stronger than the
afore mentioned words really should be steered clear of, here as well. -Does
this make sense?…

Thanks a bunch and -hope everyone is having a truly remarkably cool and
wonderful holiday season!

Y'all rock and I'm honored to moderate this list and participate in it witcha!

Smiles,

Cara :)

Using new Mac Mini without a display connectedn

2010-12-26 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I just got a brand-new Mac Mini and I've been told that a blind user
can use a Mac Mini without an actual monitor connected, provided that
there is a cable connected to the display port. Is that really true?
If you've never used the mini before? Does that work when you first
fire up the Mac Mini brand new from the store?
Thanks,
Kevin, a new Mac owner.

Re: IPad questions

2010-12-26 Thread Garth
Samantha always seems slightly annoyed to me. Not sure how you could
sleep with her reading *smile*. I much prefer the Australian voice,
and yes i am from Australia so not un biased in my choices.

I am sorry about the syncing issue but have little to offer on the
subject. I assume you have tried shutting down both computer and iPad
and then trying the sync again. ? So have you ever been able to sync
it, if so, was any other software added to your computer since?
