Switching Windows iTunes Library to Mac?
Hi, I was just wondering if it was possible to somehow transfer my iTunes Windows library to my Mac. I have an iPod Touch, and I would love to be able to sync it with my MacBook Pro, as opposed to having to turn on the Windows machine every time I need to recharge my iPod, or sync new music. I figured that I would ask here, just to see, since I'm fairly certain that you can't do this without completely remaking your library. Hi Brianna: Guess I get to be the bearer of good news today!:) You can very easily transfer your pc itunes library to your mac. There are actually several ways. Probably the simplest would be to plug your touch into the Mac. Itunes should open, or if not, open it. It should tell you that your device is synced with another library and ask you if you want to synce, or transfer purchases. Another way you can do it is to turn on home sharing on both computers (assuming you have a wireless network). On your mac, look in the sources list for a remote library. Then, if memory serves correctly, you can import that into your mac's library. Finally, if these seem too risky in terms of messing with your device, you can copy the library to a flash drive and add the contents of the library to your ""automatically add to iTunes folder. (that folder is located in an itunes folder if you go to home and find the "music" folder. Creating new folder on external drive and what is a smart folder
Hi all. I have a USB drive connected to my MBA. I want to make a new folder on that drive, which BTW is named Arthur after my canary, but every time I try, the only new folder type option I see is new smart folder. I opened that dialog box and saw something about search something. First, how do I make a new folder on an external drive? Second, what is a smart folder and why do I want one? Oh and third, what is a smart mailbox and why do I want one of those as well? Thanks so much! The simplest way I have found to create a new folder is just to use command shift and the letter n on the place where you want the folder. In other words, if I want to create a new folder on my external drive in a folder called, John's Documents, I'd just have John's Documents highlighted and use the shift command n combination. I don't mess much with smart folders or smart mailboxes, but I believe you can basically set specific requirements as to what these folders or mailboxes contain. John, That does not work for me. I am trying to create folders at the root of arthur and when I do command shift n, the smart folder dialogue pops up. I then went to my side bar, but every time I vo down after interacting with it, I pop into the file table area. I have something on here called remote disk, which I have no idea what it is, and Gary says it looks like the computer is trying to open that remote disk thing. Command shift n was where I started all this. First I tried it with Arthur collapsed, and then I tried it with Arthur expanded. Same results; I keep getting that smart folder dialogue box. problem creating signature in apple mail
I am trying to create a multi-line signature in apple mail. I go to preferences, select the signatures tab, select new signature and start typing. As soon as I press return, or even shift return, it thinks that is the end of my signature. How do I get around this? You need to type int eh name of your sig then hit enter. then tab to the edit field if you can find it and type. be careful as mail crashes a lot when doing this. Re: Creating new folder on external drive and what is a smart folder
This is strange. I just opened one of my external hard drives with command o from my desktop, then I immediately hit shift-command-n and got the create new folder area. I typed, test folder, and hit enter. A new folder appeared in my root directory called, test folder. I'm not sure why you are seeing the smart folder dialog when you do this. Google Chrome and Mac
Hi All, I came across an interesting application called Google Chrome, which from what I understand in reading the overview, is a type of web browser; however, it didn't seem to be really accessible, in my opinion. Looking at the instructions, it said you have to drag the Disk Image to the Trash folder, once Google Chrome is installed. Has anyone had any experience with this particular browser, and does one have to create a folder for it in which to install? Is it possible to send a msg with a return receipt as it is in Windows? I just tried and could not find it anywhere on any menu. Signatures does tend to be very nasty bug wise. When I switched over from Comcast to AT&T, I had to manually rewrite all my signatures. I really hoep Apple corrects the signatures issue. Hi Ray, Marlaina, and Others, I created signatures with VoiceOver drag and drop some time ago, so I haven't experimented with this, but I've pulled up an old post from the archives from nearly a year ago on this topic: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg16253.html It describes a few options, including an old post that Anne wrote detailing how to use VoiceOver drag and drop for this. I haven't tried the Snow Leopard text expansion method I describe there. I'll just point out that anyone who has SmileOnMyMac's TextExpander application can also define their own snippets that expand into multiple lines of text (if needed) -- which could be multiple lines of a signature, part of a form letter, etc. I have an older version of TextExpander, which I didn't upgrade, because I was told the older preference pane for,at is more accessible. I also use this for typing accented words, names, and text in other languages, and for syncing to the (separate) TextExpander app on my iPod Touch -- where simplifying keyboard entry was more of an issue. It's a bit special purpose, but you could wait for their next sale if you would find this general expansion useful. Then you could type your snippet definition for a signature (e.g., "ssig" -- "sig" with an extra "s" in front), and have it expand to three or four lines of your signature and contact information. I believe that if you create a new header "return-receipt-requested" with a value of your e-mail address, then this will do the same function. I believe that RFC822 does not however directly define this header and that the results are not predictable. Hi Nektarios, After working hard to master Amadeus Pro I did a podcast designed to show a blind Mac user how to record and edit a vynal record to digital. Macbook Pro Feet
Hi, So I just called Apple support, which was something less than helpful. (I don't think he had this in his database, so he wasn't sure what to do with me.) For the past couple weeks, the left front foot on my Macbook Pro (just 26 days out of warranty) started feeling a little mushy, for lack of a better term. Today, it popped right off, and it won't go back on. I feel a litle bit of tacky adhesive where the foot goes, but certainly nothing that will hold anything. So what I asked the Apple guy was, "What kind of glue should I use to re-attach this foot?" He said something like, "Uh, well, yeah, any kind of glue should work, so long as it isn't corrosive, and the inside of the computer isn't visible." OK...that's sort of what I was thinking, but I was hoping for something slightly more specific. Re: Creating new folder on external drive and what is a smart folder
To make a new folder, first open the drive and then open the folder where the new one will be created, if you don't want it on the root folder. Press command shift n, this will place you in a text box where you can give the folder a name, untitled is already there, just erase that and type the name you want, then press enter. iTunes/iPhone sorting music help
G! Help before I scream! Okay, I have an iPhone 4, and a Macbook Pro, latest version of iTunes. I've reripped all music in to iTunes. When using the iTunes program, all music is sorted perfectly, I can find all albums and artists grouped together without any problem. The issue is when the music is manually synced with the iPod portion of my iPhone I'm having issues. If I choose to look by artist, I could see for example, Chris Tomlin f/t Christi Nicol, Chris Tomlin. If I go in to either of these, I'll see 1 or two songs under each album. The album is called "Glory in the Highest." If I choose to view by album, I could see "Glory in the Highest" listed 3 times, instead of 1 time. It should be the artist is Chris Tomlin, the Album is Glory in the Highest. So, under artist setting, Chris Tomlin should appear once, and if I tap Chris Tomlin, I should see the albums "Glory In The Highest" and what other albums I have by Chris Tomlin. Under album listing, I should only see "Glory in the Highest" listed 1 time. If it's sorted by albums, and I choose "Glory In The Highest" I should see all 12 tracks. This is 1 of many examples. Okay, assuming you are all still reading. I've hooked up my phone, gone to iphone source, expanded the music, and see all music on my phone. I've manually selected all songs by Chris Tomlin, Glory in the Highest album. Pressed command i, went to sorting tab, chose sort artist album check box, checked it, went to okay, chose okay, vo shift m, chose apply sort order. No luck. I even went back in, chose command i, sort option, chose sort album artist check box, okay, then nothing else. Still, no luck. Please help! This is driving me nuts. Everything is fine in iTunes, so I don't know what is going to get screwed up during the syncing, and how to fix it. Please help me! Fixing an annoying mail problem
Hello all, My Mail has been sluggish for me for months. I finally, I hope, found the problem and fixed it. each time I used the Command Option N command to go to the inbox, mail opened the inbox in a new window. I checked the Windows menu item and found out that I had over thirty inbox windows open. It seems that every time I created a new inbox window, mail kept it. I went to the inbox and closed, Command W, all but one inbox window, and behold, mail is its old perky self again. It has also fixed the, "mail busy" issue every time I deleted an email. It didn't like updating thirty plus windows. So, check your Windows menu every once in a while to check what's open. Using a Macbook/MacBook Pro as Primary Computer?
Hi, I just got my MacBook Pro about a month and a half ago. Now that I've started figuring more and more things out, I find myself using the Mac way more than my old Windows desktop. I was just wondering if anyone used their MacBook/MacBook Pro as their main computer? I'd love to, as I love the OS so much more than windows. The only thing stopping me is I don't know how much it hurts the battery to use it every day until it tells me I'm running on reserved battery power, when I charge it, sometimes while still using it. I was just wondering if this could hurt my battery in any way, and under this kind of usage, how long the battery would last until I need to replace it. Hi: You cannot hurt it by using it until it dies. That's actually a good thing to do. I believe the battery is good for 1000 charging cycles. Hi Brianna, Welcome to the world of mac. :-) I am fairly new myself, going on about two months now with my new macbook pro. I dove right in with both feet, forcing myself to find ways of doing most things on the mac, otherwise I knew I would be much more likely to do what was easiest--use windows, since it was what I was familiar with. I know myself too well, what can I say. I have found that I use my mac 98% of the time now, but I have recognized those few things I still prefer to do in windows, such as scanning books or documents. I am still rather fond of my K1000, I admit it. There are also a couple of games I still play in windows, as they are not available for the mac at this time. So I guess in a nut shell, I definitely use my mac as my primary computer. Of course, with most anything, each person has their own preferences and needs in life. What works for one won't necessarily work for all. I know there are a good many others on this list who have made the switch to mac for their primary computer, while others find that their needs are best met by a somewhat different mix of windows and mac use. With regard to the battery, I shouldn't think you are doing your battery any harm at all by allowing it to run down consistently, especially if you are allowing it to receive a full charge on a regular basis. In many cases, this can actually be good for the battery. Unfortunately, I am not overly familiar with the battery on the macbook pro, so can't really speak as to the recommended maintenance or overall lifespan of the battery. Hi, Brianna: Not only is my MacBook Pro the only and thus my main computer, it's almost my main piece of furniture, since I moved a few months back. During the few months before that, my MBP was my only computer in some pretty rugged environments. As far as the battery, t's good to completely drain and recharge it once in a while, but they also don't damage easily if you leave it plugged in for weeks or even months. Hi Brianna: I've found myself booting up my old Dell less and less frequently, in favor of the MBP.:) The battery is actually built in such a way as to not be affected adversely by memory. That is, it doesn't remember how much was left before you charge it. So, there's no adverse affect in that way. I guess I'd say the MBP has become my primary computer for most things, save scanning and printing labels. My little Dell and the Canon scanner are a pretty hot team to beat, and I'm afraid my dear Mac-alexander just can't beat them for convenience. I confess that at times, emails are easier to read at times with Jaws. But, even Safari is beating out my Firefox browser and I very rarely surf wit the Dell anymore. Questions are a good thing. Also, to get to the inbox, you can use command-1 . You can find out what's open by pressing VO-f1 twice quickly. In any application, you can go to the window menu and find out which windows are available.
