Financial Software/SEE Finance
Hi All, I have been evaluating the SEE Finance program and believe it is accessible enough to warrant purchase. I labeled a few buttons and likely have others to label, along with various check boxes. VoiceOver makes that easy and possible with the VO forward slash command and all of the definitions have held thus far. I'm hoping for some direct support from the company, e-mail thus far. I set up my account by downloading everything from my Quicken file that I created. Anyway, if any of you are looking for a program that handles checking, savings, credit card and investment accounts and also will have the capability of setting up a budget, then I'd encourage you to look at this program. It costs $29.95 and I'm expecting will be well-worth the purchase. Les -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: cd drives going out of style:
Why not use lossless compression? Then it's a non issue. CD music is only 44,100 hz so it's not like the highs are that well preserved anyway. You need to get in to the super audio cd stuf or the higher bit rate recordings to get interesting quality. Hello, I just grabbed the Dutch voices for the 30 day trial, but after installing them they don't show up in voiceOver utility or in the speech settings. Am I missing something, because the isntallation was successful or is this a limitation of the trial period? Re: infovox
Hi! When you install these voices, it asks you to restart to complete voice activation. This usually doesn't make a difference, but you might want to give that a shot. Also, make sure to open up "Infovox iVox.app" and complete the online registration for the trial if you have not. Re: moving to a computer-based entertainment system
Hi everyone, If we are talking about DVDs, you may want to watch out for DVD-encryption as a lot of DVDs are encrypted today. I know som software can handle this, but some decoding software does not like encryption. I am also curious to know what you are using for this, as I use a hardware solution myself through the Mac USB-port, making it much faster. I know we are talking about entertainment systems now, but I didn't see fit to change the subject just yet as it falls into the same category. Jon, Thanks for replying. I'd want a date/time stamp like this: Monday, November 15, 2010, 14:41 Note the 24 hour clock. I looked at date and time and text formats. js On Nov 10, 2010, at 5:23 PM, Jonathan Cohn wrote: Well, I don't believe there is a built in function for that, but I believe a one could quickly set up an automation, and then enable it as a text function to work in all standard text input fields. speeding up media
Well, I was listening to some mp3 lectures using media player classic on the pc side and itunes on the mac side. I wanted to know if there is a way to speed up the media like there is with the digital players? Or is there another program that would allow me to speed up the media. Hello list. This computer has long battery life according to the specs. They say up to 10 hours. I new that this is not true, especially for us voice over users. Hello Nektarios, Three hours for a new MBP is terrible! Did you let the battery drain completely once to calibrate it? If not, try doing so and then see what happens. Hi Nektarios: That sure doesn't sound right to me. I generally get about 6 hours per charge, and I'm always amazed when I go back to my old PC and it runs out after 3. Hello Nektarios, In pdas and notepooks if you find "power management" that is where you turn off things that you don't need. Now I don't know the odds of a Macbook. But you'd want to turn off programs that you hardly ever use. There're things that run upon bootup. These are the kind of thing only experienced power users will know. I am not one of those experienced power users, but those are the things you want to look for. good luck! selling old macbook?
Hi guys, one of my clients bought a macbook in 2009 and then shelved mac OS in favour of windows. Now of course her laptop isn't working properly and she is feeling defeatist about the whole thing. One of her lines of enquiry has to do with selling her current macbook and buying a reasonable windows 7 machine. I'm not really in favour of this no matter what she decides, but I need to know, what is fare market value for her notebook, assuming that she still has a year and a half worth of apple care on the thing? I think it's the very first 13 inch macbook pro. The one with the sd card slot on the left hand side. It's not customized in any way, so 2.2 ghz processer, 250 gb hard drive, 4 gb ram, OS10.5 leopard. assuming that it has the remainder of her apple care, what would you say is fare market value for the computer? I tried looking it up on Ebay, but I can't find anyone selling used macbooks. They are all new, and priced accordingly of course. Re: selling old macbook?
Hi Erick: I didn't realize there were some with SD card elsewhere. She can put those stats into a search on one of those Apple Referb websites to get it's worth. She might also consider simply taking it to an Apple store and discussing upgrade with one of the reps there. These people are incredibly gracious and helpful. (As I write, I'm glad I left my credit card at home. Because right across from me is a beautiful new iPad calling my name.:) On Nov 15, 2010, at 9:03 AM, erik burggraaf wrote: > Hi guys, > > one of my clients bought a macbook in 2009 and then shelved mac OS in favour > of windows. Re: selling old macbook?
Hi Erik, Another site to check is lowendmac.com under their deals links. This web site is aimed not so much at Mac users who are trying to buy low end systems, as those who tend to keep running their old Macs forever, or who want to know how to get the best performance out of their older machines. So they do cover new product releases, but more from the viewpoint of users who want to know how features and performance compare and fit in with the (many) older model Macs that are around, and also write about software and hardware that's still around to boost performance for older models. For example, they ran articles about where, and typically for what prices, you could find new Leopard distribution discs several months after Apple stopped selling them. They run a regular column on the best low end deals for buyers of various model Macs from different sources (refurbished, close-outs, used, new, etc.). Since Dan's site is geared to getting prices for selling to a reseller, you should be able to get an idea by looking for something between the two sources of price information. HTH. Doing a put in the land of ftp
Hi folks, or should I say gurus. I need to ftp a file to the ACB Radio incoming folder. I can get there just fine, navigate to the file I want to put, but then I'm dead in the water. I tried doing a copy of the file, then navigating back to the location in which I want to put it and pressing cmd-v to paste but all I get is a beep. This is how put can be accomplished in windows; how do I do it with Mac? Thanks again for all the help. I'd prefer to be able to do this using only the browser, but if necessary will download a client. Hi Marlaina, Quick reply before I have to go. Transmit is Panic Software's product, and is probably the best paid FTP solution: http://panic.com The best freeware FTP solution is probably Cyberduck: http://cyberduck.ch/ I use Transmit or else I do FTP or SFTP from terminal. Re: accessibility of MacBook Air
You know, you've brought up a good point, as have a few others. The Braille 'n Speak did indeed have instant on, and it had it for the exact same reason as the MacBook Air. Syncing folders over the Air
Ok. The other night, I felt very proud that I figured out how to get file sharing working. I would never have dared to set up a Linux or Windows network for the first time at 03:30 in the morning, but once again Apple came to the rescue. It even speaks FTP and someone on Twitter even said NFS. Wow! So I can see my iMac from my MacBook Air, very good. Now, I want to figure out a way to keep folders in sync. Specifically, if I make a change in my documents folder, I want to automagically reflect over the network as soon as possible. If I change something on the Air, I want it to go to the iMac. If I change something on the iMac, I want it to change the next time I open up the Air. I've seen a few apps and tried one, but couldn't access it very well, and thought I'd ask the list. Any thoughts? I hoped MobileMe would do this, but no dice, at least according to the Apple guy. In Linux I would set up a rsync cron job or something. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: macbook pro battery.
Check with coconut battery, a small app that gives some information about your battery. You can download it here: http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/ Second, open system preference, account, and log in items, and make sure that only necessary apps are running. Thirdly, VO uses nearly 10 percent of CPU power and the speech engine uses about the same level. Even though the number fluctuates a bit, this is way higher usage than open two flash based websites. Apple often says that flash contents reduce battery life in half. So, see where the ballpark should be at. Finally, the hour reading from the task bar is only estimation. If you turn your machine, does not touch anything for about 2 minutes, check the number, and you will likely to see near 10 hours of calculation, whereas you open a couple of apps with keyboard commends and check it, and it will say 3 hours with 99 percent of battery life. Accurate usage can only be measured with real clock, from the minute you turn your machine on, to the minute that it does not say any longer without power supply. Hope this helps. I am using 13 inch macbook pro and it has 5700 mah battery and I am getting between 3:45 to 5:30 out of it and the battery has 15 full cycle counts. Hope this helps. Fun fun fun with Alex :)
Hi everyone: Ok, I have always been intrigued by the idea of emoticons, and I was just blown away when I first heard Alex read the smiley emoticon. Well, of course there are tons of these. But, as a blind person, I never had a clue about how they were represented, nor did I care. But, with Vo making me laugh every time I encountered a smiley, I finally broke down and had to find out how to teach him some new ones. So, I found a list of emoticons, and interacted with the text to learn how differing ones are made. Perhaps I have too much time on my hands, but I've had a great time discovering the kinds of things, (some naughty and some nice) that people can make out of simple text characters. What we did today in class was to go into VO Utilities, speech and pronunciation where you can add new ones. Interesting, unless Alex is set to recognize them, a blind user would never know they're even there! So, someone could send some very interesting messages and we'd be none the wiser.:( I don't know if Jaws has this capability, but I've never had my pc throw smileys or other text-based representations at me in this way. So, I thought others might appreciate this as well. It would be interesting to see if others are using others besides smiley and frown. Re: accessibility of wordpress.com with voiceover to make my own blog
Hi. I run wordpress on my own server, and love it. http://behindthecurtain.us You might like to check out MacJournal from http://marinersoftware.com. You get a free 15-day trial or something. Among other things, it lets you import and export to Wordpress. I have a whole journal which more or less mirrors my blog. I can write a new entry and upload it. I can even edit it and it will update the entry. It lets you do tags and categories too. I really like it, and it does make things easier. For site admin stuff though, you will have to deal with the admin panel and all that. It might seem daunting at first, but you'll get used to it once you learn your way around a little, and learn about the different components of a wordpress blog. I cannot get gmail pop mail service to work
I don't know what I am doing wrong but I am trying to add a gmail account to apple mail and it just won't work. I have followed all the steps to the best of my ability and I just cannot get it to work. The closest I've come is getting an error message saying that pop.gmail.com cannot be verified and may be a security risk if I continue. Those are not the exact words but it's the general idea. Are there any ideas as to what is going on. I've read everything I could on the gmail website to see why I've gotten this error message and also as to why this is not working at all. I currently have a pop gmail account working in apple mail and I've tried using similar settings for the new gmail address but I cannot get it to work. On the gmail side I did enable pop mail so that isn't the problem. Someone else set up the first gmail account for me but I just cannot seem to figure out how to set up the second account on my own. What you do: After opening vlc go to the play back menu and click Add Folder to Playlist . Or do command pluss. Now go to the file menu an go to open file. Pick the folder and it should play. However, I was going by the example of what someone had set up for me on another gmail account. Re: Adding files and folders to VLC player
The play list is the files that are in the folder that you picked. If you go to file Open Recent submenu you can pick a folder to play that you have played. What I am trying to figure out is how to make a play list. I have tryed puttin alaiss to files in a folder but that did not work. If you figure out how to make a play list let me know. I guess I will have to read the manual drats. On Nov 15, 2010, at 2:40 PM, Kimberly thurman wrote: > That works great. Now, how do I see the files in VLC that are in the play > list. Re: I cannot get gmail pop mail service to work
When you get that message just accept the certificate and you should be good to go. Also check under advanced I believe it is and insure the correct ports are being used. The gmail configuration tips has the propper ports. Re: I cannot get gmail pop mail service to work
Just to add to this, under advanced I seem to have port 995 set under ports. I think that's the default for secure pop but not 100% certain you may want to check that. Re: I cannot get gmail pop mail service to work
Thanks Scott. I have checked the port and all seems well. The strange thing is that I seem to not be able to recreate the error message stating that mail cannot verify pop.gmail.com. I understood that message to be a security risk. I will try to set up the account again since I may have been on the right track after all. I deleted the account so I will try to add it again. :) I had tried to copy the error message to paste in the e-mail but I was unsuccessful Thanks, Christina On Nov 15, 2010, at 4:50 PM, Scott Granados wrote: > Just to add to this, > under advanced I seem to have port 995 set under ports.
