RE: 64 bit processors

2010-11-03 Thread Simon Fogarty
If you've got an I7 procesor, then you have 1 processor. However built into
that is two separate processors, or more like two pathways for things to
work on / down.
Infact I thought the I7 range was quad core. Interesting.
\ and without a doubt. The i7 and i5 range of processors are 64 bit, which
means it can handle both 32 & 64 bit systems.

Subject: 64 bit processors

Hi,
I am unable to tell whether the processor in my Macbook Pro is 32 or 64 bit.
I have a 15" Macbook Pro with an I7 processor. In the system profiler, is
says that there is one processor and 2 cores. Does anybody have any useful
information regarding this?

Thanks,
Joshua

Re: set a function key to move VO to the dock?

2010-11-03 Thread David Taylor
Hi,

I must admit, I agree that using the control key with function keys is not easy
at all. I think that's why we were given the extra keystrokes. It is worth
getting into the habit of resting your left thumb on the VO keys and learning
where important keys are, since that gives you one-handed access to many
commands. I do wish they would asign keys to fn-right sided keys as well, just
to save some of the more difficult keystrokes. Pity that doesn't give us the
numberpad as the method using the number row plus arrow key is of little
ergonomic use.

Cheers
Dave

Re: messengers

2010-11-03 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi!

For your information, Adium does in fact work with IRC. Just use the events.
It's perfectly usable. Of course, also keep in mind that your criticisms of how
Adium handles IRC may be based on a full-featured IRC client, and Adium is not
that much. It's a chat client built to handle many services quickly and
efficiently, and not to support every single feature of that service. If you
look at it from that perspective, IRC does actually work really well.

As for IRC clients, there are a lot of choice, and some very well-done clients
that work extremely well and have the features you'd want. I contacted the
developer of a client called MacIRSSI to let him know about the accessibility
that already exists within the client, except speech output. While you can pipe
the output to something like eSpeak, not everyone may know how to do that and
if you just wish to get onto IRC, you may not want to use eSpeak anyway.

Hello to all. Is there a way to prevent a refresh of a window, example mail or

Ok let me restate that. When new content comes in to a window like a mailbox or
a skype contact list it kicks me back to the top.

Is there a wayto stop this? using IOS4.1.

Take care.

Saving file directly to a folder

2010-11-03 Thread Linda Adams
Hello folks,

Back again with something that sound simple but has me stumped. In text edit,
I have no problem going through the dialog that comes up when I want to save a
new file. However, I can't figure out how to save a new file to an existing
folder in my document folder. Is there a way to save it to a sub-folder?

Also, if I have a file on the Desktop and the same file in my document folder,
can editing changes to the one on the desktop be saved to the duplicate file at
the same time? It appears that they can't be saved to both files at the same
time.

Last question for now. In Mail, I began a message and wanted to save it to my
draft folder while I looked up something. I tried the tool bar save as draft
button but it was dimmed. How do I do this?

Many thanks to all of you who have helped me learn the Mac.
TIA,
Linda

Re: Saving file directly to a folder

2010-11-03 Thread Esther

Hi Linda,

When any of these dialog windows appear, you can use any or all of the
FInder shortcuts or sequence of shortcuts to specify the folder you
want (Command-Shift-H for your home directory, Command-Shift-D for
desktop, etc.). If you want a specific sub-folder, and you're
positioned for your Documents folder, just use Command-Shift-G (for
"Go to Folder"), and type in the name of the sub-folder you want, then
press return. Your file should get saved to that folder. You can
also type in a full path to some completely different folder (like one
on an externally attached hard drive).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hmm the cmd shift O does not work for getting to the documents folder though
but what I do is cmd shift h for home, d or arrows until I get to documents and
cmd down arrow then arrow to my folders in there and cmd down arrow and stop
interacting then hit save.

Take care.

Back again with something that sound simple but has me stumped. In text

an existing folder in my document folder. Is there a way to save it
 to a sub-folder?

Also, if I have a file on the Desktop and the same file in my document
folder, can editing changes to the one on the desktop be saved to the
duplicate file at the same time? It appears that they can't be saved to
both files at the same time.

Last question for now. In Mail, I began a message and wanted to save it
to my draft folder while I looked up something. I tried the tool bar save
as draft button but it was dimmed. How do I do this?

Many thanks to all of you who have helped me learn the Mac.

Re: 64 bit processors

2010-11-03 Thread Scott Granados
Ok, I think I have the answer.

Quadcore is the high end then if you add hyper threading you get 8 "virtual
cores (apple's term not mine) or more accurately the OS thinks there are 8
cores which is a product of hyper threading.

Sounds more reasonable.

Thanks
Scott

Audacity tutorial

2010-11-03 Thread Joshua Loya
Hi all,
I recently downloaded Audacity, and remember running across an audio tutorial
of the program a few months back. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I came
across it. It was part of a presentation that was given on podcasting at one of
the alphabet conventions, or at least that is what I remember. Does anybody
have any useful information? I'd be especially grateful to anyone who can post
a link to that particular tutorial.

Thanks,
Joshua

OCR

Hi,
What's better for accessible OCR, Iris reader or Abbyy Fine Reader? And in
whatever case, will the scanner I have from the old PC work with these programs?

I would appreciate it very much if someone knows and posts this answer either
on or off list.

I here there both pretty good but, I think some of use Abbyy Fine Reader.
It depends weather or not your scanner has mac drivers or not. You have to
contact your scanner's manufacture to ask or look online. Good luck!

Re: Importing DVD's into iTunes to play on iPad

2010-11-03 Thread Eric Caron
Hand break instructions needed.

Could Jesse or another Hand break user please give me and maybe others
a little more instruction on how to use this program?

I have VLC and Hand break. My goal is to convert my DVD's into a format that I
can use on iTunes and my iPhone. This is completely new to me. Best would be
a step by step list if someone has the energy to do it.

Your help would be appreciated.

converting to a spoken track in itunes.

2010-11-03 Thread Sarah Alawami
hello. I know how to do this in fact here are the steps I followed taken from
another list I was at the time on.

The second method uses alex only and converts to an itunes track but you can
easily convert this to mp3.

to convert a file, open the app of choice such as preview, text edit or pages,
this is usually done by opening the file and letting the system choose the app
to open it with and we can talk about what to do if you don't like the default.

once the file is opened, press command-a to select the text in the file, press
controlll-f2 or controll-option-m to focus on the menu bar. move right to the
application menu, it will say text edit if you are in text edit for instance.
press down arrow to move to the "services submenu". right arrow and if you
find a send to itunes as a spoken track, press enter. if not, press enter on
"services preferences" this brings up system preferences and lands you in the
keyboard shortcuts menu. tab to categories and down arrow to services, tab and
you will be in a list of services. down arrow to the item for "ad to itunes as
a spoken track" and hit the space bar to select it. Press command-q to close
system preferences. Now, back to services, move to the app window as above,
move down to services, right arrow and press enter on ad to itunes as a spoken
track. Itunes will ope and begin playing your track after a period of time
depending on the size of the file you fed it.

To convert the file to mp3 once it is in itunes, press command-comma and in the
general tab, go to import settings, press space on this and choose mp3 encoder
from the pop up, customize it any way you like and click ok. press command-w
to close the preferences window.

press controll-f2 or vo-m to focus on the menu bar, left arrow to advanced
because it is closer to the left end, down arrow to convert to "create mp3
version" (it will not appear in the list if you don't configure the prefference
for it) above and press enter. once the file is converted, you can find it on
your hard drive burried deep in your home folder somewhere like this:
users/your name/music/itunes/itunesmedia/music/unknown album/text to speech.mp3.

but I try and do that and I get auto mater has no windows. did this method
break with itunes 10? this message was written in jul of this year.

Thanks.

Question about Unix commands

2010-11-03 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.
Hello,

How does one get the ls command in Unix to display directories whose names
consist of more than one word, separated by a space? For example,
ls /Users/Rafael/Documents/My Stuff
or
ls documents/my stuff

Thanks in advance to anyone with the ability and inclination to help me out
with this one.

Hi!

That's incorrect. These commands work perfectly in any Save dialog box without
a hitch. The only one that doesn't work is Command-Shift-O for some reason
which is actually very strange, but Command-Shift-H works.

 Hi Linda,

When any of these dialog windows appear, you can use any or all of the
FInder shortcuts or sequence of shortcuts to specify the folder you want
(Command-Shift-H for your home directory, Command-Shift-D for desktop,
etc.). If you want a specific sub-folder, and you're positioned for your
Documents folder, just use Command-Shift-G (for "Go to Folder"), and type
in the name of the sub-folder you want, then press return. Your file
should get saved to that folder. You can also type in a full path to some
completely different folder (like one on an externally attached hard
 drive).

Greetings y'all,I have the most current versions of Adium and Growl installed.
I can see my list of online MSN contacts, but have not yet determined how to

and I can tell who the contact was but despite tabbing through the window and
interacting with anything I can, I've not yet figured it out.

TYA for any suggestions.

The i7 is a quad core, so 1 processor, with four path ways within, it works
in a similar way to having 4 processors.
But quad processors would melt a laptop due to the heat disapation.

The only place you'd get an 8 core processor out of the box would be in a
server. Such as the optoron or xeon processor ranges.

Ok, I think I have the answer.

Quadcore is the high end then if you add hyper threading you get 8 "virtual
cores (apple's term not mine) or more accurately the OS thinks there are 8
cores which is a product of hyper threading.

Sounds more reasonable.

Thanks
