You need to put them actually in ~/dropbox/public. sorry if I mistyped that

Good luck.

the gns bluetooth gps receiver for apple products

2010-10-24 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi list,

I just had a chance to test the gns bluetooth gps receiver for apple products.

I tried it with the iphone 4 with the latest firmware.

After a bit of fumbling around to understand what the touch technology was on
the small device, which is a bit longer and thicker than the ipod nano 5g, i
was pretty well surprised by it's intelligent design and ease of use.
The touch technology is similar to apple's swipe gesture on a thin and long
band of touch sensitive surface for turning the device on and back off. Swiping
down for on and opposite for off. Nothing really gives a cue on its state. But
the manual says that it will turn off automatically after 15 minutes when the
bluetooth is turned off on the receiving device. I wish they had a setting of
some sort which allowed a 5 minute sleep mode, but i'm just being a
perfectionist.

The pairing was seamless with no passcode to enter or buttons to press.
Once it was paired, i opened voxtrek and i tried my location. It apparently
just turned off once voxtrek tracked my position and we first thought it was a
battery issue. So i turned my bluetooth off and back on again, and the device
woke up and gave me an exact position with mere meters of error margin which
honestly isn't verifiable since it was pretty damn accurate. The hardware
specification says that its error margin hovers around 3 meters. A long shot as
compared to my 100 meters with the iphone gps going solo.
Also something to take note of. While perusing the net for some reviews and
comparisons, i found out that channel capacity wasn't much of a defining factor
as most gps receivers only use a maximum of 12 channels for accuracy. The 32
included in this product will then have some longevity, unless i want it to pin
point me stuff at a near macro level which is in itself rather useful if you
want to check up on your pet hanster's whereabouts by piggy backing the device
on it.

We also paired it to a different smartphone and it equally worked on the dot.
don't know what else it might work on, maybe i'll try pairing it to a laptop
and a microwave oven to stress test interferences and temperature. Joking for
that latter one.
The one thing i could comment on with this little thing is the plastic feel of
it. When i read the article over the site. It talked about a slick design
reminiscent of apple's impeccable form factor and choice of material, but it
turns out to be a very fragile feeling thing.
The material could have been better, like an anodized aluminium frame or
something slightly sturdier than this soft feeling plastic
You wouldn't imagine using it as a hammer anyway, and it fits snuggly anywhere
in range of the iphone when walking out, backpack, pocket, even the lighter
pocket on jeans. .

Altogether, its pretty good and i'm anxious to get back to auckland to try it
on navigon. .

Next thing to do is to test it's mobile precision tomorrow as we are picking
someone at a hotel we don't know. Will probably report back if anything
exceptional happens or if we ended up out in the country side or the bottm of
the city's river.

I give it a good point in any case as my first gps augmenting experience.

Best regardds,

Actually the latest channel count is up to 66 channels. the i-blue
737a+ some qstarz models and others have been using the 66 channel
chipsets for quite a while. I have a Qstarz receiver attached to my
keychain that has 66 channels.

The more channels the faster the acquisition and more sensitive the
receiver is.

Also keep in mind, the internal receiver on the iPhone as well as other
phones is susceptible to all the electronic components within the device,
this is why external receivers seem to work better.

Re: the gns bluetooth gps receiver for apple products

2010-10-24 Thread Yuma Decaux
Hi,

I totally agree with you, but the point was that there are only 12 satellites
being picked up at any time however the channel count, so until the full 66
channels are being used at full potential with 66 satellites i don't need that
power, which itself would also suck up more energy.

I don't believe either that 66 satellites would be roaming around an arc of
about an 8th of the planet's perimeter.

It would be like using 66 processors to try to increase broadband speed on a
adsl which is limited by the internet backbone Of your district.value

Best regards

While it is true that recent Macs and osx are 64 bit capable, snow leopard
on default is 32 bit. Do not know why Apple decided to put it 32 bit while
saying everywhere that it is 64bit.

Re: wireless connection issue

2010-10-24 Thread Scott Howell
Have you noticed this slowness with other wireless devices, have you tried
connecting directly to the router via an ethernet cable, or have you perhaps
tried disabling the WPA encryption as a test? It is difficult to diagnose this
type of problem if you have not tried some of the steps I have mentioned. You
have to determine if it is the machine, network, or ISP.

Re: 64 bit or 32 bit Mac bootstrapped with W7

2010-10-24 Thread Scott Howell
There is a way to change to 64-bit mode, but there is no reason to do so. You
will not notice a significant change in performance and you may find some
software or hardware no longer works. Not all drivers have been rewritten to
run in 64-bit mode. Btw, yes, I ran in 64-bit mode for a while to see if there
was any change and I did not notice anything at all. SO, I switched back and
decided it was not worth the bother or potential incompatibility.

You can push 6 and 4 at the same time while booting to OSX. Otherwise, there is

Jumping to different podcast feeds in Itunes

2010-10-24 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

I hope you are having a wonderful Sunday afternoon. I was just curious about
something. I just tried to look at my recently downloaded podcasts, as I am
subscribed to several feeds, I wanted to go through them indivudually. I
recently updated to the newest version of Itunes, and cannot figure out how to
jump to specific podcast feeds. It appears as a table instead of a list view.
In the previous version of Itunes, I was able to sleect the podcast from the
podcasts list by pressing VO and right arrow. Now all I can do is interact with
the table. What am I doing wrong? Any assistance you could give me would be
much appreciated. Thank you so much, and have a great day.

Intereacting with Podcast Scroll area in Itunes

2010-10-24 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi all,

Well, it seems as though I answered my own question. I decided to post the
steps here in case anyone has the same problem I did. In order to interact with
the podcasts as a scroll area and not as a table, just VO right arrow over to
Grid View Switcher and hit VO Space. Then when you VO right arrow over you
should see something that says group by podcasts or group by categories. These
are both radio buttons and you can select which one you want. I selected group
by podcasts and now happily have my scroll area back. I'm sorry for the other
post before, well you learn something new everyday.

Cheerfully,
Allison

iPass Connect on SnowLeopard

2010-10-24 Thread Kiran Kaja
Is anyone successfully using this very useful piece of software on
SnowLeopard with VoiceOver? iPass lets you connect to thousands of Wi-Fi
hotspots around the world with an account. Once iPass Connect is running,
there is supposed to be an icon for it on the menubar. Looks like this icon
is stuck somewhere between the menus and the status menus and I can't get to
it with VO with any of the commands I tried. VO+M, once, twice and thrice
and the icon isn't in any of those lists.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kiran

keeping your place when a document is closed

2010-10-24 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
I'm looking for an application for the Mac that will let me read rtf files,
stop reading and close a given file, then come back to it later and have it
open at the point where I left off. the ability to add bookmarks would be nice,
but the main feature I want is for the application to keep the place in the
file where reading stopped. I know I can accomplish this with a text editor by
inserting, say *** at the point where I stop and then searching for that group
of symbols when I open the document the next time. But I'd prefer not to have
to remember to do that all the time.

Password protected documents

2010-10-24 Thread Linda Adams
Hi everyone,

Earlier this month Dan gave information on using disk utility to create an .dmg
file or folder for this purpose. I looked at the file menu under disk utility
and read the help file but still couldn't figure out how to do this. I guess I
want to create a folder in which I could place one or more files.

If someone could give me some directions on this, I'd appreciate it. I don't
quite understand the concept of the .dmg file/folder.

TIA,

Yep that's correct. And when in 64bit press number 3 and 2 while booting to
return back to 32bit. My new Mac Pro was configured to run 64bit out of the
box and so far no problems. All the latest Mac Pro's run standard 64bit.

You can push 6 and 4 at the same time while booting to OSX. Otherwise, there
is configuration edit done on terminal, found on google.

Re: the gns bluetooth gps receiver for apple products

2010-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
Actually, that's not quite correct.

There are discussions about establishing interoperability between the various
systems. Remember it's not just the US who has a GPS network any more. The
Russians I believe have a system as do the folks in India and China. These are
in various states of development but I believe in all cases at least some
devices have been deployed to space. The US is also pushing out a new GPS
standard and I haven't kept track where that project is but it would be much
more advanced. I think in the future you'll systems that can use som or all of
these options at once. The 32 channel stuff still works nicely but there are
probably more improvements in the new 66 channel other than channel count. I
would assume better receivers and error correction would be included.

Re: wireless connection issue

2010-10-24 Thread Scott Granados
Have you tried pinging the local gateway IP from your host. What are the round
trip times. Use the -t poption and let it run for a bit are there any packets
dropped?

If so you may have either someone trying to break in to your wireless using
packet injection and or a word attack or you could have interfearance with
other networks.

Try changing your wireless channel in your router. If your devices support it
use wpa2 only with aes and disable the other features. Also use N only if your
devices support it if not disable the extra wireless protection option usually
found under advanced wireless.

If you don't have packet loss and your ping round trip time is in the 1 - 4 MS
range you have a problem with your ISP. Reset your modem and router and call
your provider if it continues.

Hope that helps.

Sarah,

Okay, I have my folder but I can't find the "new sub menu" you mention. The
folder is on my desk top and I checked VO m and VO shift M and the tool bar.
Help?

Re: the gns bluetooth gps receiver for apple products

2010-10-24 Thread Yuma Decaux
As you say it yourself, it boils down to interoperability and future projects.
The new features aren't there yet, and i was looking for a product which works
out of the box for my iphone.

Furthermore, i don't know whether the 66 channel devices have those features
you mention, if they require a firmware update on the device itself, or if its
part of the network packet sending features. If it is the latter, those extra
satellites would join the party, but still 32 channels is more than enough for
another few years.

I take this device as something which works seamlessly with my apple product
and provides me the necessary precision with less than half of it's capacity
used, with some of the features coming at a later date.

This said, if anyone was able to connect a different bluetooth receiver on
his/her iphone or ipad, i'm all for checking it out too.

Best regards,

Yuma DX®.

Reading eBooks with the Kobo eReader app [was Re: Very frustrated about kobobooks.]

2010-10-24 Thread Esther

Hi Annie,

You wrote:
I am very frustrated about kobobooks, to me it does not seem to work
well. I am a braille reader, and I am not using much speech, I was
so glad, when i heard about kobobooks. I bought a book, that I would
love to read, but I got very disappointed, the app constantly says
that internet connection is timed out. And it is not very
accessible. I did not give up, so I downloaded the book, I have
bought to my mac, and then I have hoped, that I could transfer it to
ibooks, that works quite well for me. But that is not possible
because of the protected file, the file is an acsm file. Can I do
anything at all, do any of you who are reading braille have any
experiences with kobobooks.

Best regards Annie.

I don't use a Braille reader, but I am able to read Kobo books with
either VoiceOver gestures or with Bluetooth keyboard control. This
app used to work more easily for VoiceOver users when there was only
an iPhone version. It's when they introduced an iPad version, and
then integrated the iPad and iPhone versions into a single universal
binary that people encountered accessibility problems. Once you get
the setup configured you should be able to use the Kobo eReader app
fairly easily. The problem is that the setup process can be utterly
opaque to new users, and Kobo keeps changing the the reader control
interface for getting to the settings menu for making the initial set
up change. The good thing is that once you've made the set up change,
you don't have to worry about the successive changes in how to get to
the settings menu in each successive version release of the app. (So
far, this format has changed with each of the last three releases
since the app became accessible again.) The current version of the
Kobo eReader app (version 3.5, released October 7, 2010) actually
improved the method of accessing the eBook table of contents by making
it easier to get to, so it's worth describing the changes, and I'll cc
these instructions to the macvisionaries list. At the same time,
they've now mislabeled two of the buttons -- and one of the mislabeled
buttons is the one that new VoiceOver users need to get to in order to
make the initial set up change. You can't read a book with DRM that
you purchased through Kobo in iBooks or in any other app on an iDevice
or computer (except for using the desktop reader for Adobe Digitial
Editions, which is not accessible to software on any platform, PC or
Mac). However, you can transfer (DRM-free) eBooks directly to your
library for the Kobo eReader app through Drop box or through a Safari
download without having to add the ePub files to your iTunes library
and sync, as an alternate way to get the books onto your iDevice.
(This isn't possible with iBooks, but multiple ways to directly
download eBooks to your device has been a feature of the Stanza app
for some time.)

Here's the overview: when you do a read all gesture (two finger flick
down to read all from the current point or two finger flick up to read
all from the top of the page), or its counterpart keyboard shortcut
(VO-A to read from current point or VO-B to read from top of page),
VoiceOver reads to the end of the chapter and stops. This is true in
other eBook reading apps as well. In order to avoid having to toggle
VoiceOver off at the end of each chapter and having to flick right to
advance to the next chapter, then toggle VoiceOver on again, you need
to change the default page transition style (which I think is now set
to "Fade") to "Scrolling". When "Scrolling" is used, the start of
each chapter has a pair of links that VoiceOver announces as "link
image" before the text. Activating (with double tap gesture or VO-
Space keyboard shortcut) the "link image" in the top left corner of
the screen moves you to the previous chapter, while activating the
"link image" in the top right corner of the screen moves you to the
next chapter. (The first or last chapter of a book will only have one
link instead of a pair.) Similarly, at the end of each chapter there
will be a corresponding pair of links, and activating the "link image"
in the bottom left corner of the screen moves you to the previous
chapter. I believe that in a previous interaction with Kobo, it was
suggested that they label these links as "Previous Chapter" or "Next
Chapter", but as long as you understand the link layout and action,
these links are usable.

In the case of moving forwards by a chapter using the links at the
start of a chapter, focus moves to the correspondingly positioned
"link image" on the new screen (e.g., if you double tapped on the link
in the top right corner of chapter 1, you'll be positioned at the link
in the top right corner of chapter 2, and can start reading with
either a two finger flick down (from the current point) or with a two
finger flick up (from top of page)

continuous reading in text edit

2010-10-24 Thread Mary Otten
A friend just sent me a 9-page document, an rtf file that came up in text edit
when I clicked on the attachment. If I press vo-a the first page is read, and
then reading stops. I press vo-a again and page 2 is read, and so on until the
end of the document. I would expect vo-a to read and keep on reading without me
needing to press vo-a again after each page is completed. Is there some setting
I can change in text edit to make that happen?

recovering files from my DM-520

Hi guys and gals,
I've got an olympus DM-520, and I accidentally deleted a couple of files. I
want to recover them, but I can't seem to find a Mac program to do it. I waded
through a bunch of junk on google, but nothing immediately leapt out, so I
thought I'd ask here.

Re: recovering files from my DM-520

2010-10-24 Thread Chris Snyder
I deleted them from the DM-520 itself. There is no trash that I know of, but I
also know that flash memory doesn't actually delete files until they're
overwritten with other data. I've been careful not to do that since this
morning. I'm hoping there is a program that works well on the mac that can
recover that data.
