Re: safari, blackboard, and downloading files
I will try this but I found a solution. Apparently I actually was downloading the files and didn't realize it. When I clicked the link, it automatically sent the file to my downloads folder without telling me. I forgot that safari does that if the downloads window is open. Still getting used to this thing I guess... Thanks for the suggestion. -Greg On Aug 25, 2010, at 5:55 PM, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Hello, > > Have you tried pressing option enter on the link that contains the file you > want? Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Hi there to all you knowledgeable people! Myself, partner and Guide dog are off on holiday to Italy tomorrow. Leaving from Dublin. What I would love to do is create a sort of mixed media diary of our travels on the iPhone. This may well be beyond me as, 'tis true, I am still having the frustrating problems using simple apps like Documents or Readdledocs, but, nothing daunted, will forge ahead with this project anyway. Can anyone offer tips and tricks for doing this? Are there, perchance, any apps specially devised for such a project? Can I upload to the laptop with which I sync my iPhone, video clips, documents and sound recordings? Indeed, even sound recordings: is this functionality inbuilt into the iPhone 4? In anticipation, Sandy. Sent from my iPhone -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Wow Sandy, I am just about to do the same in Rwanda for two weeks starting the 21st of September. I did the same as you, got a blog ready with all apps and stuffs on the iphone for the trip. Re: Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Hi Again, Here is how i will be equipped: -Cane -yellow fever shot Iphone 4 Macro and fish eye lenses Micro bluetooth keyboard The apps i will be holding as well as methods of broadvasting will be as follows: Facebook app Photoshop express Camera plus with the shutter as volume button Twitter and tweet pic -drop box -blue firey I've set up my wordpress blog to take email based blog entries with video and image plugins included in the backend. Thats xhtml and atom protocols for you. For audio, i will probably use drop box which itself will upload to the right directory via an ftp daemon i plugged in transmit which itself adds up to an xml based player on the blog. I don't know if i am missing something. Oh, yes. The rwandan telecommunications level of industrialisation has allowed for 3g to be widespread, at least within the capital area, Kigali. But who knows what surprises i might get once there. Anyhow, i think this is a good, portable setup i can use for mobile journalism. Re: Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Hi Yuma, Sounds like you are very well organised! I have to admit that I only just thought of doing this and am not at all set up for it. Do you know if I can set up a dropbox account directly from my iPhone? There are technological reasons here why I can't use the laptop. I do possess a blog, which I have barely used till now, so, maybe there is a good place to start, if I can allow mixed media uploads. Are you travelling alone? I will be accompanied by my partner, but hope, with the aid of my dog, my iPhone with its Location based systems and Navigon, to be able to wonder around a little da sola! I will try with the visuals, but don't see the screen, so will probably use sound and text rather more. I hadn't thought of Facebook, thanks for that thought. Hmmm, you have put me to shame, must try to get a bit sorted and start the ball rolling before the off! Please send me a link to your blog Yuma, I will be so interested to follow your progress. Ciao amico! Sandy. Re: Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Ciao Sandy, Non ce problemi, allora parli italiano? Bello I think you can register for an account over the iphone's safari browser, and you can download the app via itunes. I will be going with my partner too, and i don't think rwanda has any gps map ready unless i am positively surprised once i get there or in the meantime as i browse the web for solutions. I still don't have a guide dog so this time its going to be ala freestyle stick wielding and shin breaking :) My blog is http://Theblindsamurai.Com I'm pretty excited as i am finishing up an important developement project here in Cambodia and will go first to Santorini for a wedding, then its straight off to kigali via nairobi in Kenya. Will let you know when the adventure begins, and please bear with me as this is my first attempt at making something out of this expensive setup apart from my communications tools. Re: Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Sandy, Have you considered just making sound recordings with the voice memoes app and videoing things with the camera? If you use the facebook ap, you'll be able to post pictures as well as status updates to your profile regarding where you are and what your doing, and then, once you have all the recordings you want, you could merge them all into one big presentation on the laptop which could be uploaded to youtube or burnt onto dvd for family and friends. Don't get me wrong, I love the setup that Yuma will be using, but sometimes things are easier when there not so technical. Re: Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Wow, Sandy!!! I'm so jealous! Italy's one of my favorite spots in the world! Do those of us who are stuck at home get to peak at your media diary? I have no idea how you'd combine everything into one, but you can get plain old sound recordings with the Voice Memo app, and it's pretty easy to shoot video. Someone posted instructions a while back, I'll see if I still have them. Have a wonderful trip! iphone recording quality
Hi list, How is the audio recording quality of the iphone? Once I get my iphone, I'm hoping it will record in 44.1 kilo hertz 16 bit, just like my Nokia does when I record. Re: iphone recording quality
Hello Paul, Phone quality can vary from unit to unit as well as from company to company. I've heard the iphone and I am not impressed with it's sound quality. My Samsung has much better quality imho. So this is one I think you need to judge for yourself. My local Apple store has iphones in stock! Hi Ricardo. Once I download webkit, what would I have to do? I'm still mixed up with what I have to do when I install an application. Let me try and tell you if my thinking is right. Download webkit, open the DMG file and copy the file inside with command C, then go into application folder in the doc and paste. Does that mean that the file will be ready to use? Re: safari troubles
Exactly Scott, I do the same with my Mac Book Pro but find if I were to download files from CF, I'd have to install DownloadManager for windows as CF files tend not to download properly. I have tried to use Safari on their website but that site is not too friendly to it! Plus the files seem to be corrupted. Sorry all but I wanted to give Scott a helping hand in case he had a problem with his Touch Pro which he uses if I remember rightly! Kawal, The Editing Videos and Voice Memos section of the IPhone/IOS4 user guide describes how to edit recordings created with the built in "voice memos" app. For stereo you'll need an app such as gigDaddy and a bi-directional microphone. Yes, my experience is only limited to my device (htc TYTN) and msp so I don't know if perhaps newer versions of msp are perhaps better or if the iPhone for example has a better/more efficient layout/solution to this feature. If so, I'd like to know. I haven't upgrade to msp 4.5 since the future of winmo 7 seems to be merky as of now, (a topic for another discussion) and since the upgrade is more or less the cost of one of the new droid or iPhones I won't until things become clearer in the phone market and on ms with how they'll go forward with the new winmo platform too. Everyone says to just get a Bluetooth keyboard as an alternative, but at least in my circumstance, having to lug around gadgets upon gadgets with their respective cables, batteries and god knows whatever else adaptors and plugs (I travel internationally so plug and electric converters have to be considered when I pack) is incredibly unappealing to me. That and I just don't want to strap on all those devices on to my belt just to go to dinner with my wife or to the grocery store and look like some star wars storm trooper or something either. Re: safari troubles
Dear Ricardo. Excellent tutorial. I don't use Drop box as it's not too accessible with the Mac but when I opened the link and went to Safari, I found the play button no problem. One question, the recording program you used, do you need a mixer or something and if not, is it easy to use as I have no room for a mixer here but do wish to have something I can install on the Mac and record if ever the occasion arises. Please write to me off list and tell me how you got what you use as the quality was excellent. I have used Gold Wave in the past but it would never record my voice so I do need something which will record. I'm using my little headphones which came with my I phone 4 as I need to find some headphones with microphone built for Skype which I can use with the Mac Book Pro. If you can recommend any, let me know! Kawal. On 26 Aug 2010, at 15:23, Ricardo Walker wrote: > Hi Kawal, > > You have good timing. Then you could edit using the Mac providing you had the right software! Thanks Geoff and I'm back to receiving mail on the Mac Book Pro again. Kawal. Saving VO Preferences
Hi, I haven't had any problems with Voiceover but after reading some recent messages, I decided I should save my preferences which I haven't done since buying my Macbook. My question is the best way to do this and where to save the file. I located the "export preferences" in the file menu under preferences in the VO utility which seems very simple. I've read older messages which talked about going to the library and saving the Voiceover 3 folder and others saying to save plist files. Will the "export preferences" be all inclusive? Now, the silly question is where to save it? It seems to not matter but I'm still wondering where. Re: Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Not sure I'd ever travel anywhere that requires a yellow fever shot (wow is all I can say) but ... This sounds like a good list. Things I might add if budget isn't an object or depending on the requirement Good quality stereo Mic and maybe some directionals, I like AKG professional products but schure makes some great and small solutions for this. You might want a data ready space based phone something like an irridium or what ever the current equivalent is. Rates have dropped on these used to be 2 bucks a minute or so but I believe this has dropped. Data rates not sure. We have an internet and phone solution in my plane and that's pretty affordable, something like that should exist for when you leave the cities. You also might want something old school like a portable DAT device that has very high recording quality in case you get in to say a musical environment and want to capture some of the local flavor with out compression. I'd say AK47 for some of these regions but that's just the sheltered spoiled American in me speaking. Good luck and please definitely provide the list links. I'd be interested in listening to something like this. Spoiled Sheltered American comments aside, I do love traveling and have also worked in electronic news gathering in college so have some familiarity with what you're trying to do although my first hand knowledge is definitely dated. Re: iphone recording quality
44.1 KHZ is old news circa 1988 or so. It's all about 96 and 192 KHZ now on 6 or 11 channels. Honestly, 44.1 is a little slow on the sample rate side. Old man Niquist bites you in the back side at the high end of the frequency range. You want at least 10 points per wave of samples if not a lot more. (more is better) Otherwise you get wicked saw tooths and squares. Re: Good accessible SSH client?
Hi Scott, Your Mac has SSH and SFTP, and other server functions built in. You can access them directly from the command line in the Terminal app. I use Terminal so frequently that I have it as one of the default apps in my dock. (The dock can be useful as a quick way to navigate to apps that you use frequently -- you can customize it to remove the apps that you don't often use, and add ones that you do.) The Terminal app is located, not in the applications folder (which you can reach in Finder with the shortcut of Command+Shift+A), but in the Utilities folder, which is a sub-folder of Applications, and which you can reach with Command+Shift+U. Then press "T" to navigate to "Terminal" and launch/open the app. I use Command+Down arrow to do this. By default you'll be using the bash shell. To use ssh, to log into your account on another system you can simply type: ssh AT for example, if your login account name is "scott" and the machine name is "computer. granados.net", you can type: ssh sc...@computer.granados.net and press return or you can use the IP address in place of the domain following the AT sign: ssh sc...@168.10.1.2 and press return then type in your password. Use a similar syntax for sftp. Macs use "Open SSH" as the protocol. If you have some Unix/Linux background, there's an old web site: "Top Ten Mac OS X Hints for Unix Geeks": http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2002/10/22/macforunix.html You might want to later configure your terminal preferences to suit your activities. The most likely thing you'll want to set is your terminal emulation. Application preferences are set with Command +comma. Terminal emulation is set from the "Advanced" tab of "Settings". I use non-standard settings, but as I recall the default emulation was to declare the terminal as "color xterm", and you won't want that for most systems. Try something like "VT100" or "VT102", if you're in a situation where it makes a difference. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Aug 26, 2010, Scott Granados wrote: Can anyone point me at a good quality SSH app? Re: Good accessible SSH client?
This is the best thing ever! I really strongly disliked the windows ssh clients. To give you a little background, I've been working with different flavors of Unix since about 1985 or so with most of my time spent on SunOS (pre solaris), Linux (since 0.99PL15) and Ultrix. So needless to say what you're telling me is outstanding news. I can do some key generation and simplify my whole life. Not to mention bash scripting, on my laptop, really! The Java access seems so much cleaner as well. I'm going to have to install mhy Juniper tools (which don't work under Windows) and find a Mac GCC (if one exists) and go for it. Do you happen to know if X windows is usable? It's cool you can use the open command to open osx apps from the command line, that's hot! - Original Message - From: "Esther" To: Sent: Thursday, August 26, 2010 12:08 PM Subject: Re: Good accessible SSH client? question a about bookmarks
Hi All, I have done something that has made my bookmarks go away! When I press cmd option b to pull up my bookmarks, I get the the websites that apple gives as the popular websites. I have no clue what I did! Does anyone know how I can get it back to the way it was? how should the settings be under bookmarks in preferences? Re: download linked file in mail
I believe so, but I'm not 100% sure. I say this because when I press command option L in mail it says "Apply rules". The download manager seems to only pop up when in safari/webkit. hth On Aug 26, 2010, at 5:51 PM, Sarah Alawami wrote: > I had safari closed when I did that and it still downloaded. Re: download linked file in mail
I'll have to play with it maybe find something big to download from mail. Take care all and I get the feeling that you will see a download progress when you open the browser. Re: Making a visual and sound/documented record of my upcoming trip to Italy on my iPhone.
Hi Sandy and Yuma, OK, here are a few thoughts about apps. Mark Taylor uses a free app called Audio Boo, that's billed as "Twitter for people who want their voices heard". This is more a social networking app than a trip record, where you can create an account at Audioboo, then record record "boos" of up to 3-mintues in length, add a short description, optionally attach a photo, assign tags, and then publish your "boo". You can link your account to a Twitter acoount, and tweet accordingly. I haven't used this, but when I examined it some months ago it looked accessible. More conventionally, you could use Voxie Pro Recorder in Express Mode (shake to stop or start recording), for off the cuff impressions. Then, tag and file your recordings. Yuma, if you're using BlueFiRe (the free app), you might want to consider getting FiRe ($5.99) from AudioFile Engineering (or, I think you can now upgrade to FiRe from Blue FiRe through in-app purchase. This is more of a professional recording tool, but the features that I like about FiRe, is that they really improved the accessiblity of easily generating markers (tap anywhere in the center of the screen where your finger would naturally fall and you generate a marker -- with BlueFiRe you have to aim for a more limited "playhead" to place a marker. Navigating through by markers is also even easier in FiRe than it is in Blue FiRe, because as well as tapping the left or right side of the center to go to the previous or next marker, you can do this quick scroll through a horizontal extension of the playhead position that you have to aim at for tapping with BlueFiRe to place markers. This is in addition to scrolling by doing three finger flicks left or right in the central region to move the recorded music position with respect to the playhead. Hope this isn't too confusing, but the app was described in more detail in the archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg22979.html (FiRe -- Field Recorder app on sale for $5.99 through June 10, 2010) On a totally different subject, Sandy, at least, might consider getting a traveler's app called mPassport. The mPassport Florence app is free; the mPassport Rome app just went from free to $0.99 a week ago. They also have a free app for Nairobi, but I think this is only available from (international) iTunes Stores where the language is English. They're meant to help travelers who encounter sudden medical emergencies while traveling abroad. with contact and location information on doctors (who also speak English), phrarmacies, hospitals, etc. Even if you only want to know the hours, locations, and telephone numbers of nearby pharmacies this is great information. Even betters is their drug equivalencies and medical translations guides -- with recorded audio sections that correctly identify medical terms. (Feature is not available for all languages and countries, but these are generally available for Spanish, Italian, German, and French) For more details, see my archived post about "Accessible traveler's medical apps for iPhone/iPod Touch: mPassport Paris). http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg17672.html This is still largely true, although the audio portion of the medical translations part of the app requires an internet connection. Everything else (including translated sections) is local to the iPhone or iPod Touch. And since you have the language rotor, you can have the iPhone simply read out the translations. (There are about 24 of these mPassport apps that I now have or got when they were free. Most are still free.) Another great, general resource is "Hear Planet: Audio Guide to the world" (free, lite edition, and paid $4.99 edition from HearPlanet. This is wikipedia style information for various points of interest near your location. All quite accessibile (or was in the versions I previewed.) HTH. Bello I think you can register for an account over the iphone's safari browser, and you can download the app via itunes.
