Yeah under vista and windows 7, you have to run as admin to get the full
functionality from the services.

I tried that. but it scanned in read only mode when I just typed chkdsk in
the cmd prompt. That's the first step I did but I'll try it again. Oh and I
ran chkdsk throught the windows property dialogue as well. No issues I
think.

Hi.

First of all, I'm going to assume that you don't have a RAID setup. If you
did, you'd likely know about it. So, just ignore those errors. To fix this
error, reboot into Windows, enter cmd.exe and when you get to the prompt,
type "chkdsk /F" and the drive letter Windows assigns to it. Windows will
most likely complain about inconsistent entries in the MFT (similar to old
FAT filesystems on floppy disks or other media.) Go ahead and have Windows
fix those errors. When the process is complete, try mounting the filesystem
again. You shouldn't get any errors at this point. Note that Windows is a
bit conservative about displaying errors--in this case ntfs 3G did you a
favor. While not serious, there is a potential for these errors to become
much more serious over time.

Re: niki plus

2010-08-15 Thread Chris Moore
Just go to your local sports wear retailer and ask for Nike+ ready sneakers. A
whole range support Nike+ such as Nike Air Max etc. They also might stock the
sensor there too, Nike+ sneakers come in a full range of sizes. You can also
buy the Nike+ sensor from Apple either from their online store or in their
retail stores. If you have an iPhone then you only need to purchase the
sensor, if you intend to use the Nike+ system with the iPod Nano instead then
you will need the Nike+ Sports Kit which includes the add on which connects to
the bottom of the iPod nano (iPhone already has this built in).

The only thing you need to set on your treadmill is the speed and incline you
feel comfortable with.

Very easy to use, I like the calorie target mode. You get regular
prompted updates to tell you how you are doing and if you are getting
close to your target. This saves you having to look/press the screen to
find out what is going on. You then get a summary of everything at the
 end of your workout.

So far I am very happy with my purchases.

Ascertaining the time and date.

2010-08-15 Thread Geoff Waaler

Greetings y'all,

Surely there's got to be an easier way to find out the time and date than
finding it in system preferences. I checked the box to display this
information, but still haven't located it.

TIA for sharing the insert+f12 equivalent.

Geoff,

If you are referring to the time and date that is displayed on the status menu,
you have a couple of options. First control-f8 will take you to the status menu
where the info is located. You also can enable keypad or keyboard commander in
the VOiceOver Utility,, enable VOiceOver scripting, which is found under the
General tab, and you can use a key sequence to get the date and time. These are
the two quickest options. Of course I am assuming this is what you are trying
to do.

Via Chris Moore, I learned thatyou go to voice over utilities, enable the
keyboard commander, select the right option key as your keyboard commander and
then you can just hit the right option key and the letter 't' and you'll get

Hi Jeff,
There is an easier way to get the time, however I cannot remember the
total procedure to activate it. I will tell you what I remember, because I
cannot find the message the provided the instructions. Maybe someone can
repost it. i thought that I had put in my acharives for future reference.
Here we go.
go into your voiceover utility and activate the ability to use apple script. I
thought that there was another setting that needed to be changed, however I
cannot find it. Now when you do right option t you will get the time and date.
 Hope that this helps.

Re: Ascertaining the time and date.

2010-08-15 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello!

First, depending if you want the time spoken with Apple's Speech Manager, you
don't need to check the "Allow VoiceOver to be controlled with AppleScript"
checkbox under the "General" category. Non-AppleScripted commands will still
work as expected without this checked, and even some AppleScripts such as Speak
Time and Date. Part of the disadvantage to using the Keyboard COmmander with
scripts is that it takes them a while to load, as they apparently are not kept
in memory, which you will notice if you try doing it twice rapidly as opposed
to doing it once in a while.

It seems to currently be faster to hit Control-F8, then hit the left arrow once
to get to the time.

Hello there,

Nike+ works with any treadmill, in fact you don't even need a
treadmill as you can use it outside too. Nike+ software is on
your iPhone or iPod Nano, you purchase some Nike+ ready trainers
and a Nike+ sensor into the left trainer under the inner sole. As
an alternative (and much cheaper one) you could download
iTreadmill for your iPhone. Personally I like the Nike+ system
better as I do not need to keep the phone in my pocket or even
touch it once I have started my workout. Depending on what
workout you choose, the coach gives you regular feedback on your
progress.

Out of interest, which treadmill did you get? I have got the York
T302 which enables me to use the built in speakers for the iPhone
and the buttons are easy to feel and remember. Each press of the
speed + or - buttons increases or decreases by 0.2 km, so its easy
to work out how many presses I will need to hit a good walking
pace of 6 km per an hour. Prior to the Nike+ I used the built in
timer on the iPhone so I knew how long I had been walking for,
well that was if I was not using the phone to play music or
podcasts.

Very easy to use, I like the calorie target mode. You get
regular prompted updates to tell you how you are doing and if
you are getting close to your target. This saves you having to
look/press the screen to find out what is going on. You then
get a summary of everything at the end of your workout.

So far I am very happy with my purchases.

Re: Magic Jack/Force Quiting An Application

2010-08-15 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

I use Magic Jack all the time to call family and friends in the States. While
the ability to call for free is great (well, I did pay the annual fee) the
program, in terms of friendliness leaves much to be desired.

I have found three ways to quit Magic Jack:

1. From almost anywhere, go to the Apple Menu by pressing Voice Over M. Arrow
down until you get to the "Force Quit" option. Click on that and then interact
with the table that lists the programs that are currently running. When you
get to the Magic Jack entry in the list, stop interacting with the table and VO
Right until you get to the option that lets you force-quit the program.

2. If you don't want to navigate through the Apple menu to get to the "Force
Quit Applications" option, type Command Option Escape from anywhere, and you
will be put in the same program dialogue as in Number 1. Proceed as described
in 1.

3. My preferred way of quitting Magic Jack, since the Command Q never works is
to go into Finder and from there, find the Magic Jack volume. Once there, VO
Shift M brings up a list of options, one of which is the command to eject Magic
Jack. Press Enter on this option, wait a couple of seconds, and then remove
the Magic Jack plug from its USB port on your Mac.

I hope this helps just a little.

have to select "yes" to completely close it. I checked the menu but that
only did the same as command Q. I tried turning tracking off and that
didn't help. I tried the window chooser but there is only one window and
I can't get to the yes button.

 All suggestions welcomed.

Changing the order in which messages are displayed

2010-08-15 Thread Michael Busboom
I used to know this once, but I have forgotten. Does anyone know how to change
the order in which messages are displayed. In the View Menu, I have messages
sorted by date of receipt. However, the oldest messages are at the top of the
list, and I'd prefer them to be at the bottom. I didn't find anything in the
View Menu which lets you configure whether messages are displayed in an
ascending or descending order.

Thank you very much,

Mike

When interacting with the message view in Mail, you can change the sorting by
press VO-Shift and |. (that's the vertical line or backslash key). Simply move
to the column you wish to sort by and press this key combo to sort up or down.

Max,

Mystery solved. I keep Quick Nav on almost all of the time and that's why the
left arrow with or without VO wouldn't do anything. As soon as I turned Quick
Nav off, it worked just fine. Wow, this stuff can get confusing!
Thanks,

Hitting left arrow on its own once is fine, unless you have Quick nav enabled.

Hi,

No, it is the left arrow. Just turn off quick nav, and you're good to go when
in the status menu. It only works with left arrow, though, not with VO-Left
arrow unless you have set the VoiceOver cursor to wrapping.

VMWare, Skype and a soundcard issue

2010-08-15 Thread John D . Lipsey
Hi all,

I'm running VMWare fusion 3.1.1, I believe it is, but this problem was
occurring even with my older version of Fusion. I'm running Windows XP on the
virtual machine, if that matters.

I've tested several hypotheses, and have reached the conclusion that Skype is
my culprit. Here's the problem.

If I'm running fusion, and am on Skype with someone on my mac side, every once
in a while the sound card starts making funny sounds. This lasts for a few
seconds before all of the sound is completely gone. I can fix the issue by
simply putting my computer to sleep and then bringing it back up, but this will
naturally kill anything I may be doing on the windows side. This happens
regardless of whether VoiceOver is on or not, so it has to be some kind of
issue between Skype's using the sound-card and windows also trying to use the
sound card. I think.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Workarounds?

RE: anything to switch bluetooth connections?

Belcon make a usb kvm switch that also has audio jack on it for speakers /
headphones.

But iit also has a usb port for adding a secondary usb device, wonder if you
could add your blue tooth adaptor to tha t and then use blue tooth headset
for listening?

ok i didn't know that they made kvm switches with audio :) that's cool and
because of the way tha bluetooth works is the only way to switch bluetooth
from one machine to another. the paring process is what makes bt secure and
safe. if you could swap that way anyone else could take over your machine in
a coffee shop or public area. you would be amazed at just how many bt things
there are in places you wouldn't expect. even some display signs in
buisnesses are bluetooth now. there i think is a sign at the apple store
that shows up as a bluetooth device. and forget the bluetooth headphones
unless you are literally in the next room. you would be better off with HIGH
end wireless

headphones make sur eyou gt the top of the line model the cheaper ones die
after 6 months even my last set of sennheiser headphones I got for Christmas
are half dead and weak their transmitters apparently fail

there is very likely a professional grade solution for monitoring audio it
is likely to be spendy but if this is your job it's worth the money to
obtain professional quality equipment check out the pro sound reinforcement
shops for your audio needs the pro stuff uses higher power spread spectrum
or diversity recievers depending on the model and what you need it to doOn

I did this with a windows system I had setup. 6 machines coming through a
kvm with audio. On ekeyboard, mouse, monitor and one set of speakers. Made
life pretty easy.

I am nto aware of any way to do this unless you had a standard KVM that
would allow you to use a bluetooth adapter that would connect via the USB
port on the KVM. I am not sure if this would even work, but the thought has
crossed my mind as well.

Hi All,

Since going blind recently, I invested in a treadmill to keep the pounds off.
Obviously if you can't see, the display on the treadmill is not much use. So I
activated the Nike+ app built into the iPhone and from what I can tell it seems
very accessible.

The thing is, I will now have to go out and get the sneakers(trainers) and
Nike+ sensor for it all to work. Does anyone have any experience of the Nike+

how do they compare?

Navigating to the top or bottom of a table.

2010-08-15 Thread Geoff Waaler

Greetings,

I have over 3,000 messages in my in-box, and wound up somewhere in the
middle looking at undeleted messages from February 2009. My goal was to
reach the bottom, but I couldn't locate an equivalent to control+end. I
then tried doing a millian three finger flicks up on the track pad, and at
some point it wrapped on me.

I have two questions. How can I jump to the end of my messages? Secondly
where can I find the system keys such as the cmd-shift-c key Sarah suggested
yesterday? I'm thinking there must be some on board documentation so that I
don't need to post such questions?

TIA and best regards.
Geoff

working with pages

2010-08-15 Thread Greg Aikens
Does anyone know of a good resource for learning to work with pages and V/O?
Most of it is coming pretty straight forward but a few things have stumped me
so far. Working with footnotes for example is something I'm struggling to
figure out. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Navigating to the top or bottom of a table.

2010-08-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Geoff,

The commands to get to the top and bottom of a table are called "Go to first
item" and "Go to last item", and the commands are: Control-Option-Home and
Control-Option-End. On a laptop, Home is FN-Left Arrow, and End is FN-Right
Arrow.

The Command keys are at either end of the Space Bar, and you can identify any
key by pressing Control-Option-k to start Keyboard Help, which you stop by
pressing the Escape key.

In Keyboard Help, you can press any key to hear what it is, and you can press
any VoiceOver command combination to find out what it does.

You can bring up the commands menus by pressing Control-Option-h twice. Press
Return on the command that you want.

In Keyboard Help, you can also use trackpad gestures to find out what they do,
however, it will not identify standard Mac shortcuts. You find all shortcuts
attached to their menu items. So, for instance, in the Edit menu, it will say
"Copy, Command-c".

Cheers,

Anne
