Re: interaction and getting one's teeth in to the Mac

2010-08-11 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi, Donna,

As far as reading e-mail messages is concerned, I rarely interact with them as
long as I am just interested in content. When I come across a message I wish
to read, I just hit Enter on it, and VO reads it aloud. While this doesn't
work in every program or situation, it's nice for just quickly perusing mail.

I forgot how I enabled this feature, but the idea came from a genius on one of
the VO Mac lists, and I've really enjoy it.

Best regards,

Mike

Of course you can stop VO manually, but it would be nice if it stopped

Yeah, you do. If you haven't interacted with the message area, and with the

Hi Michael,

I do the same thing, and I like it very much. But I receive a lot of messages

press enter or VO-Space to activate the link, without the two additional

Hello Donna,

I don't use the Preview pane, and in the Viewing section of Mail Preferences, I
have Show header detail: set to "None". I just press Return to read a message,
and only have to interact once if I want to activate a link. I don't have to
read through the message so far to find the link since I can use VO-Command-l
to get to it directly.

Oh, yes. And if you want to look at the message headers for any reason, press
Command-Shift-h and there they are.

Cheers,

Snow Leopard, The Missing Manual from OReilly publishers is an extremely
good book. It describes in detail what the window controls look like and any

When you press the return key to read a message, does Voice Over tell you what

Hi, Paul,

I read it quite accessibly in Preview, but I also transcribed it into Braille

I honestly don't know if any of the libraries or publishers for the blind have

Re: Teaching Mac to sighted people

2010-08-11 Thread Chris Moore
Have you got the address bar and the dock hidden? Or auto hide could be
activated for the dock, this means it will not come into view until you move
the mouse pointer down to the bottom of the screen. You can check the status
of the dock settings within the sub menu of the Apple menu.

As for the address bar within Safari, go to the view menu and make sure the
toolbar is shown.

Hi Anne,

Thanks for the tip. I actually like having the headers spoken. I often skip
passed much of that info, but I like having it there. But, I'll keep this in
mind, and maybe experiment with it.

Oh, that's interesting. I would think that the need to interact would be the
same with or without the trackpad commander. Guess I'm going to have to find
some time to sit down and play around more with it.. I tried it out a while
back, but I kept making things happen that I didn't mean to, so I turned it off.

 Hi all,

I haven't followed this thread too closely, so first, my apologies if I'm
bringing up something that has already been covered. But I have this same
problem trying to read to the bottom of text. For example, when reading a
long email, if I press VO-A, it will read the whole message, even if I'm
already halfway down the message body. I do wish there were some way to
make VO start reading where you are, instead of back at the top of the
document. Note that the one exception for this seems to be in Safari,
where pressing VO-A reads from cursor to end.

Re: interaction and getting one's teeth in to the Mac

2010-08-11 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

You simply need to change a few things in your verbosity.

1. Open the VoiceOver Utility.
2. Go to the Verbosity category, then leave it on general and expand the
"Details" exclosure triangle.
3. Locate "Window" in the table that will appear to the right of the expanded
triangle, then interact. Find the Menu button right next to it.
4. VO-Space, then pick "Custom…" then deselect "Type".

Keep in mind that this will disable it so that you are never told that it is a
window, of course. You can always set this back to the default. I've been
reading this thread once in a while when it had messages, so I'm sorry if I'm
totally off course here.

You will still be read the subject line as expected. I assume this is what you
wanted?

Nic

it does not stop at the cursor, it continues reading past it and

Of course you can stop VO manually, but it would be nice if it
 stopped automatically.

Re: accessible ePub conversion service

2010-08-11 Thread Jonathan Chacón Barbero
Hello Annie,

well, I think you can copy the workflow files in the share library folder
instead of your library folder.

follow these steps:
first copy the convert to epub.workflow and convert to rtf.workflow files.
In Finder, go to computer (Comand+Shift+C)
open the Library folder
Open the services folder. If that folder doesn't exist, create it
Paste the files into the services folder and restart the finder.

Try it and tell us the results

regards
Jonathan Chacón

Braille Question.

2010-08-11 Thread Jesse Bollinger
Hi everyone,

I am trying to Use the Focus Braille Display with Voiceover. I plugged in the
USB and the mac recognized the display. I rebooted and the status message came
on the display saying my battery time and such. However when Voiceover starts,
the display goes blank and just shows the six dot braille cells all over the
display. Am I missing something? I can control the mac with the display's
buttons but am getting no braille feedback.

Thanks,

Jesse

Re: is there any accessible software for editing epub

2010-08-11 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi Jonathan.

That sounds great. But I have a problem, when I tries to make HTML. I really
feel, that I got a lot of codes to navigate around with, sometimes it is
difficult to find the real text among codes. Does there exist a HTML editor
where I can toggle between a mode were it shows all codes and a mode where it
only shows the text, that will make it easier to stand at the right place in
the text, before you insert the codes. I hope you understand my problem. I have
always used word for windows for such work, but I am using my mac more and
more, and that is the only computer that really works for me.

Best regards Annie.

I am trying to Use the Focus Braille Display with Voiceover. I plugged in

Voiceover starts, the display goes blank and just shows the six dot

the mac with the display's buttons but am getting no braille feedback.

To expand on a previous response to your question, I frequently use this when

shift-FN-VO with the left arrow to go back to the top or the right arrow to go
to the bottom. You can lock the VO keys or the finger action isnt too bad. the

Re: somewhat ot: a new use for audiohijack pro

Yeah but you can import that to amadeus pro and set the noise flow to very low
and it sounds almost professional. I did it for a show promo.

Take care.

Not to mention the fact that if you ever need to report a message to someone's
ISP for SPAM, you can use command+option+u to get at the source details of the
message. ONce there, the source matter can be cut and pasted as usual in to a
new message or what ever you're going to need to do. To get back to normal
content, just press command+option+u again.

Re: Teaching Mac to sighted people

2010-08-11 Thread Alfredo
I would like to know the experience you have after teaching your
sigted friend. I would use route the Mouse to the VO cursor focus,
which I think is VO-Shift-F5, but I am not sure. I would also tile
visuals with VO-F10, this highlights the area of the screen and puts
in the middle, making everything else blackish so that the highlighted
item is the focus. After seeing the item, your sighted friend will
then be able to know where in the screen it is at. I would use the VO
cursor size command also, VO-Shift-Left and or Right Bracket to make
the VO curosr size bigger and smaller as needed. As the VO curosr
grows, a bigger rectangle encircles it and whatever is on the focus.
I hope this helps, also the person taht told you about the hide
address field and hide and unhide dock was right ont he money.

Skype.

2010-08-11 Thread Geoff Waaler
Okay so I've spent a few hours getting acquainted withmy MBP. I registered,
installed the latest updates and went through the VO tutorial.

I downloaded and installed Skype. Not quite sure how I pulled it off since I
couldn't seem to run it from my downloads folder, but I did get the license
agreement and filled in my userid. More over, when I checked for updates under
the Skype menu it indicated that I had the current version, so it must have
downloaded and installed?

This was the first app I attempted to use, so my questions are probably pretty
basic, but here goes:

1. How can I ascertain the status of contacts? I went into verbosity settings
(VO+V) but couldn't find any applicable options. I believe I recall Mac users
knowing which contacts were on as is possible with JFW, so I'm probably missing
something.

2. When I restarted, I can no longer locate Skype. I tried "applications"
(command+shift+a), the finder and the spotlight. Only the spotlight showed me
Skype but it appeared to only consist of the file I downloaded as well as
recently visited Skype pages from Safari history.

3. Back when I was able to run Skype I went through the options but could not
locate a way to place a test call. Perhaps the Mac has features rendering this
inapplicable, but I was curious whether this feature is not in the Mac version,
or perhaps I didn't look in the right place?

Thanks in advance for any/all suggestions, and best regards.
Geoff

Strange behavior from adium

2010-08-11 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi all,

I'm getting some strange behavior from voiceover when adium is running.
Whenever someone signs in or out, voiceover will say "row 1 expanded" as if I
was working with the list of contacts. This happens if I am not even in the
adium window. The row number is different each time, probably referring to the
row that contains the group that the contact belongs to.

I have Adium linked to my Facebook account, so I have a lot of contacts, and
they are constantly coming and going. I turned off the audio notifications, but
hearing table rows being expanded all of the time will soon drive me to stop
using Adium with facebook. Is there a setting somewhere that can be changed to
stop this? I'd prefer it to be something I can do in Adium. Changing a
voiceover verbosity setting would lose output that may be useful in other
situations. Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

Re: Strange behavior from adium

2010-08-11 Thread Jeffrey Shockley
Hi,
In Adium, go to the View menu, and Click Hide Groups I think it's called.
That should fix it. The groups are the Contacts groups like Facebook, Friends
from WLM and Buddies from AIM (I don't think names are changed of groups.)
That above step should fix that annoyance for you.

Jeffrey

Re: Skype.

2010-08-11 Thread Justin Kauflin
Hi, I'll try to help.
1. When I want to know when someone is online, I noticed that if they are
online, their name is above the Skype Test Call. That seems to be pretty
consistent. If your not sure where the test call is, its in a table that
lists all of your contacts in the main window.
2. When you download an application, your downloading the disc image. With
most of these, you are able to run the program from the disc image, but if you
want to put it in applications, you have to locate the Application file in the
downloads folder and copy it to your applications folder. I feel like the way
the Mac treats applications is much different than the way Windows treats them.
Once I got used to how it works, I like the way Mac does it. Feels much
cleaner.

Hope this helps some

Snow Leopard, The Missing Manual from OReilly publishers is an extremely
good book. It describes in detail what the window controls look like and any
keystrokes, if applicable, etc. I highly recommend it.
