RE: office

2010-08-02 Thread RATTRAY J.
Hi,

I like Keynote for presentations - once you get your head round the
navigation it is fairly quick and easy and works well - it will also
convert Poerpoint files with ease so if you get files in different
formats it works - you get the slides and speakers notes without having
to cycle through different pains - you simply navigate across the screen
-more intuative than ppt with Jaws.

For simple word processing text edit works - other people use open
office and can suggest other things - I am also using pages (iwork) and
now that I have my head round the navigation I am liking it.

Hope this helps

Julie

hi everyone

I'm new to the mac and voice over, and I'm wondering which programs work
better for word processing and viewing slide shows. I do need to use
them a lot in school, reading text documents and creating new ones, and
also reading the slide show presentations my teachers give me. so I was
wondering if I should purchase Apple's iWorks, or use open office, or
maybe anyone has another suggestion.

thanks so much

Making Open Office work better with VoiceOver?

2010-08-02 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

I am running the latest version of Open Office and am having an annoying
problem reading documents.

Whenever I arrow up or down through a document, VO will make a soft clicking
sound, say "edit Text" and then read the text on that particular line.
Whenever I try to interact with the document, I am only permitted to interact
with the line that I am currently on.

Is there a way to change the behavior of either VO or Open Office to make
listening to text easier as I arrow through it, or is this something with which
one must live when using Open Office and VoiceOver? Are there any "must
settings" in the View menu options that need to be taken into consideration?

Thanks,

Mike

clicking column headers on mac

2010-08-02 Thread Paul Erkens

Dear list,

In mac mail, I'd like to click on the column headers inside the message
table, to reverse the sorting order of that column. However, the VoiceOver
cursor won't land on the headers. All I can do is interact with the table.
Is there anything I can do to get to a column heading and click it using
VoiceOver?

Paul.

You do not need to click on the column headers to do this, simply move to the
column you wish to sort and press shift + control + option and | (vertical
line) which is next to the return key

Re: Bluetooth keyboards and the IPhone

2010-08-02 Thread Chris Moore
The only thing you can do with a bluetooth keyboard on the iPhone is enter text
into a text field. Sadly you can't control the phone or move around the non
text fields. This is a real shame as I expected to be able to use the iPhone
the same way I use my Mac with a keyboard. My keyboard does have a home button
and media buttons for iPod. Still its better than nothing and hopefully Apple
might consider adding support later.

so stop trying to copy off me yet again Kev or I will put extra salt on your
eggs!

Pauses in Mail Messages

2010-08-02 Thread Jim Fettgather
Hello.

When reading mail, often, when using Control Option J to move between the
mail message table and the message text, there are unnatural pauses as
Voiceover reads the text of the message.

These pauses seem to occur at the end of each line, but not on all messages.

Any way to get Voiceover to read messages without these distracting, unnatural
pauses?

Thanks.

I believe someone has reported Eudora is accessible, but I have no clue. Apple
Mail more than meets my needs. I can tell you that Outlook or onterage or
whatever that Microsoft mail client is called, does not work with VO.
There is also another client that completely escapes my mind at the minute, but
I thought it was something like PMail. You may just have to try a couple out.
Is there some issue with Apple Mail or a feature that is missing you require?

Re: DVS Movies in itunes Store

2010-08-02 Thread Bryan Jones
Hi Kevin - I've also been wondering about where to find DVS movies. The only
DVS movie I was able to locate in the US itunes store is the animated film,
"UP." It is available for purchase only, not for rent, and costs $14.99. I
posted the question to the viphone list but haven't received any legitimate
leads yet. I also spoke with a Netflix rep who wasn't able to find any DVS
movies but said he would enter a request to add DVS movies and/or add a search
function to the Netflix site for this option.

mail and contacts

I want to add someone who sent me an email to my address book, but I've brought

only contact cards in my address book are for myself and Apple. Which brings
up another question... how do I import the contacts from my IPhone into my
MacBook's address book?

Done with questions for now.

That is not very descriptive. Perhaps you can explain what you mean by "stupid

educating, you will find that Mail meets your needs as well.
Of course like anything else, you have choices, so feel free to explore what is

Selecting and Navigating in Note texts on iDevices with the Apple Keyboards and Simplenote App [was SimpleNote BlueTooth Keyboard]

2010-08-02 Thread Esther

Hello Ed,

I've changed the subject line and I'm cc'ing this post to the macvisionaries list because these comments apply to general use of
the Apple Wireless Keyboard (and iPad Keyboard Dock) with iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad for text entry. The issues that you raise
are not shortcomings of the Simplenote app (that I recommended) for note taking -- they stem from the fact that these keyboards
are only for text entry and not for navigating through general applications, activating buttons and controls on the screens, etc.
Since the Apple Wireless Keyboard is exactly like the current Mac laptop keyboards, there is no "GO" button
specifically designed to press application buttons to create user accounts, log in, or replace other such buttons that perform
other, application specific functions on an app's touch screen.  When you create a free, secure web account for the Simplenote
app, you need to double tap the button to create the account on the screen -- not being able to do this from the paired keyboard
is not something that the app developer can fix.  If you feel more comfortable bringing up the full virtual keyboard, press the
"eject" button at the top right of the Apple Wireless Keyboard.  You should hear "Show keyboard" or
"Hide keyboard", which refers to whether or not the virtual keyboard is displayed on the iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad screen.
(On the iPad Keyboard Dock the key to show or hide the virtual keyboard is above the number "5" key, in the position
where the F5 key for Mac users to turn VoiceOver on would be located.)

With the Apple Wireless Keyboard and iPad Keyboard Dock, you can interrupt VoiceOver's speaking at
any time by pressing the Control key, similar to the way this key works on the Mac, when you don't
want to hear all the information.  Pressing the Control key a second time will resume VoiceOver's
speaking of the interrupted text. (On the Apple Wireless Keyboard, the Control key is on the bottom
row of the keys, and is the second from the left, next to the "Fn" key.  On the iPad
Keyboard Dock, the Control key is the leftmost key on the bottom, and there is no "Fn"
key.)  The Control key on other Bluetooth keyboards may provide the same function.

Your comments about how VoiceOver reads in the default Notes application will apply to
other note taking applications, as well.  The issue is that the Apple keyboards are
primarily intended for text entry, and therefore the most straightforward use is when
your commands are just like the virtual keyboard options: you are at the position of the
cursor insertion point, and you move to the right or left by character (right or left
arrow presses) or by word (Option+right or left arrow presses).  You want to review the
context of the document text (e.g., not just get information about the insertion point).
The easiest way to have text read out for review without repetition (that arises from the
ambiguity of whether the context should be the full document, only the current line, a
paragraph, etc.) is to use selection commands as you move through the text. This is done
by holding down the Shift key in combination with pressing the arrow keys, or arrow keys
in combination with the option key.  These combination are detailed in my earlier post,
"Apple Wireless Keyboard Shortcuts for the iPhone and iPod Touch in iOS 4",
which can be found at the Mail Archive for the Macvisionaries list at:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroupscom/msg26148.html

However, an example might help to illustrate this.  Suppose I have been taking
notes in an app, or perhaps I have selected a previous note to review on my
iPod Touch, and I wish to have VoiceOver start reading text from the beginning
of the document.  I'll assume that I'm already editing the document (i.e., I've
double tapped in the text area of the screen).  I might do something like the
following to review what was typed using the Apple Wireless Keyboard or iPad
Keyboard Dock:

1. Press Command+Up arrow to move to the start of the document.  (VoiceOver says
"Top of Document")
2. Hold down the Shift key (to select) and tap the Down arrow to select the first line.
(VoiceOver announces the  next line followed by the word "Selected")
3. Continue to press Shift+Down arrow to review the text line by line.
4. Now, let's assume that I come to a section that I want to change.  I've been using the
"selection" mode to avoid having multiple context announcements being read out. In order
to start amending text by deleting characters or words, I want to leave selection mode so that I
don't, for example, delete the entire text I've selected -- which might be most of the document
that I've been reading.  Even though you can undo with Command+z, you don't want to have to do
this.  Among other things, your current cursor location will be changed, so you'll have to get back
to where you were.  The way to leave selection mode is to move without holding down t

Vo delay

2010-08-02 Thread carlene knight
Hi:

Has anybody noticed a delay in the performance of VO lately? As I go through
menus of nearly any type, vo will still be saying the default choice when I am
clear down at the bottom of the list. It seems to me as if it's getting worse.
It reads text and everything fine except for menus. Thanks.

DTB players and thumb drives again.

2010-08-02 Thread Jenny Kennedy(Howard)
Hi guys,

Hope everyone is doing great. I have a question, I know somebody a
while ago sort of answered this. Okay here's the deal.

I bought a new 4GB thumb drive. I put DTBs on it but when I put it in
the DTB player it shows only 3 books and only one of them plays. The
other two are book errors. Is this due to the fact I'm on a mac? The
DTB will play 4GB drives as I had one, it has crashed out, thus the
reason for the new one.

Someone said something about upgrading software? Is this for the
thumb drive or the DTB player? I've got the DTBM update from November
for the player but is there something else I need to be doing in
configuring the thumb drive?
Thanks much

Jenny

magic rackpad commands

2010-08-02 Thread Mary Otten
Somewhere, I know I saw a list of commands that work out of the box with the
magic trackpad and vo. Now however, I can't recall where I saw that list. I
know about setting up track pad commander, of course, but this was a list of
commands that just work; there was one in particular involving getting access
to the linked item equivalent of vo plus j, I would guess, and I don't remember
it or any of the others, some of which are undoubtedly the same as those on the
I-devices. thanks for the pointer to the list.,

Re: Vo delay

Hi Kevin:

Thanks for your response. I have to start Vo several times because it freezes
up easier too, or states I'm somewhere where I'm not. I hope I don't have to
reinstall from scratch; totally restore the system. I just did a permission
repair about a week ago because I was getting busy signals in Safari rendering
it almost useless. That has stopped. My system is up to date.

Re: DTB players and thumb drives again.

2010-08-02 Thread Lynn Schneider
Hi Jenny. I use a thumb drive with my NLS DTB player all the time and I do my
file transfers with a Mac, but I recently had a similar sort of thing happen.
It ended up being that I had a bad thumb drive. It was strange because the
drive had been working perfectly for several months, and then one day it just
started doing weird stuff and the DTB player would not read the drive properly,
so I replaced it with another one and all was well again. It therefore may be
that you have a bad thumb drive. You might try reformatting it again using
FAT32, maybe in a PC, and then redownloading and copying the books on the
drive. Another possibility is that your downloads are corrupt for some reason.
Try downloading the books again to see if it was just a bad download. And
you're sure you're putting each book in the root directory of the drive? The
DTB players from NLS seem to like when each folder is placed in the root of the
drive instead of in a subfolder.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

 Hello.

When reading mail, often, when using Control Option J to move between
the mail message table and the message text, there are unnatural pauses
as Voiceover reads the text of the message.

These pauses seem to occur at the end of each line, but not on all
 messages.

Any way to get Voiceover to read messages without these distracting,
 unnatural pauses?

 Thanks.

To write several addresses, just go to the to field and type in the address and

Chad, if you go in to the events table in preferences, you can set up adium to
speak messages automatically.
