Re: Accessible piano apps for iPhone

2010-07-30 Thread Chris Snyder
There is also an app called Accordio. It's a piano style accordion, but it
isn't VO accessible. If you triple click, it will work nicely though. I have
it, and I play the little accordion on my iPod Touch all the time. I'm also
totally blind, and it doesn't present too much of a problem. If you hold the
iPhone to with the home button facing your chest, the chord buttons will be on
your left and the piano keys will be on the right. The chord buttons are a
circle of fifths as you go from the end furthest away from you toward your
chest. It's a lot of fun.

Friendly,
Chris

Vo no longer reading characters

2010-07-30 Thread kary johns
Hoping someone can help hear.
I'm not shore what's happening, so I'll try to explain as best I can.
I turned my Mac on this morning to find that voiceover won't read
by letter's when I use the left and right arrow keys, it will only
read by words.
Also using tables seamsbe acting strangely, but I cant quite pin point how.
I think I've turned something on or off by mistake, but can't for the
life of me work out what r how to fix it.
The only way I can get it to read by letter's is to hold down shift vo
command and then press left or right arrow, I used to be able to just
use the arrow keys on there own in text edit to read by letter.
The arrow keys just aren't acting like the usually would. It's
incredably frustrating torying to work like this.
Everything in voiceover utilities seams to be set rite.
Does anyone no what I might have done?
Thanks for any help,
Kari.

Re: Vo no longer reading characters

2010-07-30 Thread Sarah Alawami
I don't have a solution but I have a few guesses.

1. hit left and right arrow and see if quick nav is on. if it is on you will
hear quick nav off when you press the keystroke.

2. Try hitting vo semicolon. That locks the vo keys for most functions. You
will hear control option loch on or off depending on the state.

Good luck.

track pad gesture questions

2010-07-30 Thread Mary Otten
Hello all,
In anticipation of the arrival of my magic track pad some time next week, I
had a look at the article on the Apple website that gives a list of voice over
gestures in snow leopard. I didn't exactly understand what one of them does, or
at least, when you'd use it. It is the one to force voice over into a straight
line by dragging a finger horizontally or vertically , I think while holding
down one of the keyboard keys, control? What does this actually do? I wondered
also if it is possible to get an actual mouse click on the track pad while
using voice over. Do you have to turn vo gestures off and then double tap? And,
last one, I thought I remembered somebody on this list talking about their
ability to add more gestures than what has been programmed into the track pad
commander and mentioned in that Apple list. Maybe that was using apple scripts,
beyond my abilities at this point. Clarification would be great.

Re: track pad gesture questions

2010-07-30 Thread Chris Moore
I can answer one of these, yes you can add more functionality, you use the
existing gestures but with a modifier key pressed (such as control, or whatever
you wish) and then you assign an action to a gesture. This is all done within
the Voice Over utility under commanders, trackpad. No scripting involved what
so ever.

the left arrow and the up arrow at the same time until VoiceOver says
Navigation. See if that solves your problem.

Also, I have on occasion found that the Status menus appear to be
unreachable from VO and when this occurs turning Voice Over off and
then back on usually helps.

Best reagards,

Jon

Re: track pad gesture questions

2010-07-30 Thread Jonathan Cohn
The function you were talking about is for navigating tables. If you
wantto scan through the Subject of your e-mail's and not accidently
start reading the sender, then you could hold down this key and the
VoiceOver cursor will remain in the column you currently are in. (much
like using the down arrow does, but a bit faster)

Best regards,

Jon

Re: Mail Navigation Tips and Take Control Books 50% off till August 3rd {was Re: mail navigation questions]

2010-07-30 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Gmail and IMAP are a strange combination when working together.
GMAILusually has the philosophy of keeping every message in a
everything message. There is a document on the Google web site that
says something to the extent...

Do not check the box to move deleted messages to the trash as this
will cause messages to be deleted from all folders in your gmail
account. I interpret this as ...

As long as you only want your messages to have only one active label,
it is OK to have imap move the messages into your trash folder. Make
sure the Gmail/trash folder is actually marked as "use this folder for
trash" as found in the Mailboxes menu.

Best regards,

Jon

 Hi Scott,

I'm late to this thread, but I'll add a couple of other suggestions. In
addition to using the sort command (VO-Shift-Backslash for English input
keyboards; VO-H twice to get the VoiceOver Commands menu and select
"Sort Column" for non-English keyboards that don't have a "Backslash"
key), to reorder any of the columns in Mail's "Message Viewer" table
(such as "Date Received"), you can move to the top or bottom of the
table by holding down Option+Up Arrow or Option+Down Arrow keys and
waiting just a short bit. (Donna Goodin got this tip from the
 Accessibility team).

Also, even if you don't use threaded mode to view your mail, you can
move to the next or previous post in a thread by holding down the Option
key and tapping either the down arrow or up arrow key (results of
whether you get the "previous" or "next" post with up or down arrow
depend on how you've sorted your mail display).

Finally, this goes beyond your question of VoiceOver specific operations
with Mail, but a very good guide to the way that the Mail Application
works is "Take Control of Apple Mail in Snow Leopard". The Take Control
guides and their discounted bundles are on sale for 50% off through
August 3rd. These guides are all available at modest prices (typically
$10 - $15 list price) in DRM-free, downloadable PDF format. And now
they're available in ePub format as well, if you want to read your
purchase in iBooks on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, as well as in
Preview. You get access to all minor version updates for free. Some of
their guides have information I've never seen covered at the same level
in any other resource -- for example, "Take Control of Your 802.11n
AirPort Network" for setting up wireless networks, or "Take Control of
Mac OS X Backups", or "Take Control of MobileMe". Esoteric questions
about File Sharing methods (e.g. with Windows devices) are also handled
in these books. The web site typically offers free samples of the
books, as well as extensive descriptions, so you can decide whether a
particular book is likely to be useful to you.

 Cheers,

 Esther

Dimmedunknow is all I hear.

Also it lost everything I had before, not sure where too find all the
stuff I had before but it's not there It's gotta be in the computer
somwhere, but not showing there now including what podcasts I had

feeling a little let down.

I let Apple accessibility know about this several months ago.

This version obviously did not go through a thorough accessibility
test before release.

Anyone else having the same issue?

RE: word processing and spred sheets on ipad

2010-07-30 Thread Bryan Smart
Simon, it is usable, but you may not actually want to use it. I had an iPad,
and I tried this stuff, but I didn't do it a lot, and I haven't tried it in a
while, so I'll probably make some mistakes in my description. There will
undoubtedly be some iPad people that tell me that I overlooked something.
That's fine, but here is the general idea.

So, you want to put a file on your iPad to edit while you're away from home.
You know that you can't just hook up the iPad to the computer and copy the file
over, as the iPad security doesn't allow that.

Here is what you must do. You must add the file to iTunes, including, I think,
marking it for sync. Then, you must start a sync of your iPad with iTunes. When
that completes, you need to go in to the iWork program on the iPad that you
want to use, like Pages, and locate the document. Except, you can't use it
right away. You must import the document in to Pages (I think it converts it or
something).

Now, you can edit all you want.

However, when you get back home, and want to print it, you must go through the
process in reverse. You have to go in to Pages on the iPad, load your document,
export it to a regular document, hook up to the Mac, sync with iTunes, and then
get it back in to your Word Processor.

Basically, while iPad and iPhone programs can save and load files, they only
have access to the files that they specifically create, or that are brought in
to them through a sync with iTunes or over the Internet. Programs on the iPad
and iPhone can't access any file that was created by another program on the
same device, nor can they share their files with other iPad/iPhone programs.
You also can't access any documents or files that a program makes from a
computer, unless that program is authorized to sync through iTunes. That's why
programs like the Daisy book reader can't let you transfer books directly to
your device. They must waste time with built-in FTP servers or store files
remotely on a server somewhere. For the most part, I don't need to do the sort
of things with a phone to where this is a big enough of a pain to me, and so I
use an iPhone. However, for most computing tasks, this is way too much of a
lock down. I mean, if Apple wants to lock up the programs, that's one thing,
but they should at least have a common place on the iPhone/iPad where programs
can store and share files with each other. Like I said, if I can only get a
voice memo out of the voice memo recording program by using its built-in
function to e-mail it to me, then I'll deal, but trying to undertake large
projects on one of these devices is a frustrating activity that I'd never
recommend. These devices just are not made for producing content. They're meant
to be very nice Internet terminals.

Bryan

Hi,

Even though you have that solution, however, you still don't see the specific
status. You could use Clisk for this, though, but you have to access that

Re: Window Eyes under Fusion

2010-07-30 Thread Michael Busboom
Hi.

I use Window-Eyes under Fusion all the time and have had absolutely no
problems. A couple of keys are reversed, but it's not really a problem.

Mike Aureco (spelling) did a fantastic job covering this topic on a Blind Cool
Tech podcast.

Best regards,

VMWare issue

2010-07-30 Thread John D . Lipsey
Hi list.

I recently installed VMWare fusion on my MacBook so I can run Windows XP if I
ever need to. Installing VMWare was easy enough. I then located an XP install
CD in my basement. I'm not sure how long we've had it kicking around here, but
from all I could tell the disk was in working order.

I inserted the Disk and brought up Fusion. It seemed to be working perfectly
until I hit save. Then the CD drive did its thing for a minute before VMWare
yelled at me that there was no bootable media detected.

Help?

Re: Mail Navigation Tips and Take Control Books 50% off till August 3rd {was Re: mail navigation questions]

2010-07-30 Thread Thomas
It depends on your gmail settings. If you have archiving turned off
on the given gmail acount you should be able to go to acounts in
preferences select the given acount in the table if you have more
than one acount, then I believe click the Advanced tab and there is a
remove from server function that you can click.

If you have archiving turned on in your gmail acount though, you may
as well forget it because it's archiving and going to probably leve
it there unless you go in on the web.

Hi Scott,

I'm late to this thread, but I'll add a couple of other
suggestions. In addition to using the sort command (VO-Shift-
Backslash for English input keyboards; VO-H twice to get the
VoiceOver Commands menu and select "Sort Column" for non-English
keyboards that don't have a "Backslash" key), to reorder any of
the columns in Mail's "Message Viewer" table (such as "Date
Received"), you can move to the top or bottom of the table by
holding down Option+Up Arrow or Option+Down Arrow keys and
waiting just a short bit. (Donna Goodin got this tip from the
Accessibility team).

Also, even if you don't use threaded mode to view your mail, you
can move to the next or previous post in a thread by holding
down the Option key and tapping either the down arrow or up
arrow key (results of whether you get the "previous" or "next"
post with up or down arrow depend on how you've sorted your mail
display).

Finally, this goes beyond your question of VoiceOver specific
operations with Mail, but a very good guide to the way that the
Mail Application works is "Take Control of Apple Mail in Snow
Leopard". The Take Control guides and their discounted bundles
are on sale for 50% off through August 3rd. These guides are
all available at modest prices (typically $10 - $15 list price)
in DRM-free, downloadable PDF format. And now they're available
in ePub format as well, if you want to read your purchase in
iBooks on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, as well as in
Preview. You get access to all minor version updates for free.
Some of their guides have information I've never seen covered at
the same level in any other resource -- for example, "Take
Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" for setting up wireless
networks, or "Take Control of Mac OS X Backups", or "Take
Control of MobileMe". Esoteric questions about File Sharing
methods (e.g. with Windows devices) are also handled in these
books. The web site typically offers free samples of the books,
as well as extensive descriptions, so you can decide whether a
particular book is likely to be useful to you.

Esther

Re: using a hard drive for multiple back ups?

2010-07-30 Thread Chris Blouch
Dunno. My backups are going to an internal hard drive I added to my old
G4 mac so I don't think I'd be moving that around too much :) That said,
I don't think Time Machine was set up to backup multiple machines to a
drive being moved around. A big part of its benefit is doing hourly
incremental backups and instant restores which won't be possible if the
drive is gone. I know that, back in the day, we used to pass around SCSI
DLT drives to occasionally back up a user to a cartridge when, say, a
project was finished. That still fails to give the safety net of undoing
accidental deletes and saves.

Does it make it's backup into a single file? If so you could probably
store that on the 1TB drive. That said, Time Machine's backup folder
simply stores incremental backups until it fills up the volume and then
starts deleting the oldest backups. So sooner or later that volume will
fill up. I just put a 2TB drive in my other machine for TM backups and
partitioned it into two 500GB volumes and a 1TB volume. The two 500s I
use for two time machine backups, my laptop over the network and the
local machine. Then the 1TB volume is just for general use. That seems
to work well. I haven't done enough re-partitioning to know if you can
resize or not without losing data. Even if you did, you could just run
another time machine backup after you're done. Chances of failure of
your machine at the same time that you're reconfiguring backups is
pretty small. Because everything should just be files on the backup
volume you shouldn't have anything stepping on anything.

Question is, and perhaps its a stupid one, are the applications smart
enough not to step on each others data? If the drive were partitioned,
that would be an obvious way to solve the problem. But it isn't, and I've
got several months worth of time machine backups on it already, so should
think partitioning at this time would not be possible without data loss.
is that correct?

Hi Simon,

I'm not sure why the BlueAnt V1 isn't picked up by the iPad; the

Did you get the iPad Camera Connection Kit? You might be able to use

Hi, Yeh the iPad and iPhone 4 use a micro SIM, everything else in the
world uses mini SIM. They are exactly the same internal
configuration

but the micro loses the plastic surround making it considerably
smaller. If you are daring enough you can cut any mini SIM down to
micro SIM size. Anyway to answer the question about bluetooth, I use
a Nokia BH905. Its a headset style over the head arrangement and
supports A2DP and AVRC as well as standard headset protocols. Its a
really nice headset with noise cancelling, a beautiful design and
feels very solid. Unfortunately the iPhone and iPad don't support
AVRC for remote control of play/pause/forward/backward. which is a
pain but the biggest issue on the iPhone iPad and iPod is the
resolution of the bluetooth protocol. It hasn't been complained
about

very much so I asume that most people don't notice.
I
don't have any measurements but i'd guess A2DP on the i devices is
limitted to only 12KHz, maybe 16 but certainly not 22 or 44. Music
through all bluetooth headphones that I've heard is tinny and limited
in trebble.
It isn't a limitation of the bluetooth protocol as if I pair them
with
my Nokia N86 or N95 they sound spectacular. I was really hoping
Apple

would address this issue in IOS 4 but I guess they haven't had enough
complaints about it yet. Its very annoying though as I have a
beautiful sounding headset crippled by apples drivers. In summary
though the BH905 will do exactly what you want, they are solid and
sound wonderful as long as you don't mind losing a little trebble.

Hello everyone,

Me and a friend decided to have a gamer chat over the phone via a conference

general games you've played. You can talk about console games you've played or
have played in the passed, audio games, arcade games, to Interactive Fiction,
Browser Based and mudding games.

If anyone's interested, and please note long distance charges unfortunately
apply, email me off list so we can get a count of the participants, of which

My email is orin8...@gmail.com
Hope to see some people get back to me from this list, and feel free to spread
it around websites and lists elsewhere. For those of you on the Mac list, the
discussion may lean towards iPhone games; it's what we make of it.

Hi all.
I took the plunge yesterday and bought the magic trackpad.
i've only used Vo with multi-touch trackpads briefly before as I have an
iMac. But because I use the iPhone I could see the benefits such an
interface would bring to Mac OS.

Having spent nearly two days with the trackpad, I personally thing that it
is the best thing to happen in assistive technology recently. To be able to
visualise how things are laid out on the screen is just amazing. It's
larger size is also an advantage. It has really changed the way how I use
my Mac and I won't be going back to using the numpad commander unless I have
to.

RE: Vo no longer reading characters

2010-07-30 Thread Linda Adams
Carrie,

In case you didn't see Chris' response to Josh on the same issue, you
probably have Quick Nav turned on. To turn it off, press the left and
right arrows at the same time.
I am uncertain if this will also solve your problem with Tables. If
not,, you can re-post.

HTH,
Linda

Hoping someone can help hear.
I'm not shore what's happening, so I'll try to explain as best I can.
I turned my Mac on this morning to find that voiceover won't read by
letter's when I use the left and right arrow keys, it will only read by
words.
Also using tables seamsbe acting strangely, but I cant quite pin
point how.
I think I've turned something on or off by mistake, but can't for the
life of me work out what r how to fix it. The only way I can get it to
read by letter's is to hold down shift vo command and then press left
or right arrow, I used to be able to just use the arrow keys on there
own in text edit to read by letter. The arrow keys just aren't acting
like the usually would. It's incredably frustrating torying to work like
this. Everything in voiceover utilities seams to be set rite. Does
anyone no what I might have done? Thanks for any help, Kari.

RE: Thoughts on Magic Trackpad

2010-07-30 Thread Chantelle Griffiths
Hi Simon,

Yes, you can use it in a very similar way to VO on the iPhone. I received my
magic trackpad yesterday and it works brilliantly from what I can tell so
far. It's extremely responsive and there's plenty of room to carry out the
gestures. Plus, with the option to add customised gestures by holding down a
modifier key and performing a gesture, there's a wealth of possibilities.
The standard set of VO gestures can't be changed, so it's fairly easy to use
straight away if you're an iPhone user already.

Cheers,
Chantelle

So using one of these magic track pads, will allow you to use an IMac in the
same way as the vo interface on the iPhone?

It has really changed the way how I use
my Mac and I won't be going back to using the numpad commander unless I have
to.

RE: status menus messed up

2010-07-30 Thread Linda Adams
Josh,

Here is a setting that will let you check the time and date with a
simple 2 key command instead of using the Status Menu.
I got this from a posting from Ricardo Walker. It works great.

Open up Voiceover utility with VO F8.
Interact, arrow down to commanders, then stop interacting.
VO right arrow to the keyboard tab, select it with VO spacebar.
VO right arrow once more and you will reach a check box labeled "enable
Keyboard commander", check this with VO spacebar.
Right arrow to the Okay button and press VO space bar.
VO left arrow back to commanders.
Interact, arrow up to General, then stop interacting.
VO right arrow until you reach a checked labeled "allow voiceover to be
controlled by applescripts" and check it with VO space bar.
Now to check the date and time you press the right option key with the
letter T.

Accessible App - Meet Me

2010-07-30 Thread Cara Quinn
  Hi All;

I wanted to post about a very cool and accessible app called Meet Me. With it
you can enter two locations and find places to meet in between.

The app is 0.99 USD and I'll describe it in a bit more detail after the linkie!

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/meetme/id322956966?mt=8

To begin, I'm using this app with iOS 4 on an iPhone 4.

When you start the app, you'll be on the screen to set both locations. By
default 'Point A' will be selected, and you are presented with three ways to
set this location.

If you begin flicking right from the top left of the screen, you'll come to an
unlabeled button followed by the words, 'Current Location.' This button sets
your current location as point A.

continuing to flick right, you'll come to another unlabeled button followed by
the words, 'My Contacts.' this button opens your contacts in order for you to
choose one for their address.

Lastly, further flicking right will take you to a third unlabeled button
followed by the words, 'Enter Location.' As its name implies, this button will
allow you to enter a location manually. NOTE: While accessible, this dialogue
is not super friendly in my opinion, as one needs to tap the 'return' key on
the keyboard to enter the selection you just typed. Also, depending on the
completeness of the address you enter, the app will automatically search for
items matching what you've typed and then arbitrarily pick one that it thinks
you want. So if you're not completely aware of the address you'd like to enter,
I'd suggest that you might consider using Around Me (or some such app) first
and then saving a POI as a contact and then using the 'My Contacts' option
instead.

Once you set Point A, you can run your finger across the bottom of the screen
to find buttons for Point A and Point B among others. Double tapping Point B
will then take you to a similar screen where you can make this setting.

Once you've set both points, you can double tap the 'Places to Meet' button on
the bottom of the screen, (next to the 'Point B' button) and a list of
categories from which you can choose, will be shown. Choosing from this list
will bring up another more detailed list of categories for the types of
business in the main category. I.E. If you choose Restaurants, you can then
choose from a really wide variety of cuisine types.

Once you choose a more refined category, a list of actual businesses will be
shown, and you can then double tap a listing to see all of its apropos info,
including phone number and reviews etc. as well as to establish this as your
meeting place.

NOTE: as of this writing, VO reads the listings in reverse order, with the
address being displayed first and the business name being displayed last.

The app allows you to, among other things, send an email to your friends with a
link to the destination you've decided upon with directions and info.

I haven't delved into this app further than this at this point, so can't
comment on any other features or access, but so far this is proving to be a
really cool and usable app to have.

In the listings of businesses you see, you're also given the distance from both
point A and point b, so you can get an idea of whom your destination is closer
to. Additionally, you can also set the radius of where you'd like to search for
places to meet as well as which point you'd like to have them be closer to.
I.E. if you'd like your listings to be closer to point B than point A, you can
adjust your search results so your friends at point B won't need to travel as
far.

So, in summary, while access for some controls here is spotty in my opinion,
(unlabeled buttons and such) this app is still very usable in my opinion, and
is really, really very cool!…

Hope you like!

Do have a wonderful evening / weekend!…

Smiles,

Cara :)

Hi All,

I have a MacBook Pro and a couple of Pcs one running Windows 7 and the other

How well does the software that comes with time capsule work with Voiceover
for the mac and Pcs with Jaws? Could I backup my Pcs to the system?

blueant headsets

2010-07-30 Thread Simon Fogarty
Does anyone know if the blueant devices can be firmware updated

And also, has anyone used a blueant device to make a skype call on an iPad
or iphone?

Also, can anyone tell me if there is an apple site that will recommend
Bluetooth devices for the pad or phones?

I've looked on the apple website butdidn't find anything promising

Cheers

Thanks

RE: blueant headsets

2010-07-30 Thread Kolby Garrison
I have the blueant q1, and the blueant Bluetooth headset firmware is
updatable via the blueant updater. I see no reason why the blueant headsets
would not work with apple devices, but I do not have any apple devices.
