Gmail and IMAP are a strange combination when working together. GMAILusually has the philosophy of keeping every message in a everything message. There is a document on the Google web site that says something to the extent...
Do not check the box to move deleted messages to the trash as this will cause messages to be deleted from all folders in your gmail account. I interpret this as ... As long as you only want your messages to have only one active label, it is OK to have imap move the messages into your trash folder. Make sure the Gmail/trash folder is actually marked as "use this folder for trash" as found in the Mailboxes menu.
