I would like to know if there is a manner to view the events in iphoto and
rename that.
I configuret iphoto to divide the events by day. Unfortunately I don't figure

Have you some ideas?

RE: word processing and spred sheets on ipad

2010-07-29 Thread Simon Fogarty
Isaac,

They're not apple stores as you know them but they are apple dealers.
Selling apple products and accessories nothing much in the way of pc /
windows based systems.

If I need anything major then they can get it but it's always a delay.

We're only a country of 4 million. So we probably don't rate on the apple
radar as such. But we're close enough to austrailia to piggy back on their
stock buying.

Hi simon,

It's been said on list that numbers is the exquivalent to excell or
something to that affect. so yes, numbers works with VO.

I wonder if any of those Apple dealers have any kind of setup like the Apple
store? Perhaps we're spoiled in America with all that exposure, but then
it's an American company..

Apple store, wow, that would be a great Idea. I think the closest apple
store to me is in brisbaine austrailia, about 3 hours flying time from here.

We have a couple of apple dealers or stores that sell apple products, but no
apple stores.

As for checking out the device, I purchased one and have been using it for
everything else, but I'd like to have acces to word processing and spred
sheets if possible.

I wondered how accessible numbers was with vo? Has anyone tried it?

And thanks for the thought, but it's just not possible.

Hi Simon,

Is it convenient for you to get to an Apple store near where you live? they
have a "genius bar" where they can answer all your questions. You can even
make appointments to see the equipment before buying. I plan to check this
out before I decide to buy an iphone.

RE: blue tooth on iPad

Don't think so, it just seems that the blue ant isn't seen by the ipad. And
it's only 6 months old the blue ant,

So can only assume that they aren't going to play nice. The v1 works fine on
my nokia n86 and a nokia n82.

Still some playing to be had.

Simon,
Could it be the connections? Sometimes trying to connect these things can be
a bear! I've seen connections for some computers that were so delicate, I
wondered why they even bothered to go there especially considering how
expensive that equipment is.

Re: Tornado warning! (get away from windows)

2010-07-29 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

You might want to try the Spanish voices from Acapela. Assistiveware made them
for Mac OS X, referred to as Infovox iVox. You can check their site here:
http://assistiveware.com/voicedownload.php

That should be a direct link to the download page, as well as previews of the
various voices. They sound pretty good, in my opinion, even when using the
Spanish ones. If it does not take you there, simply go to
http://www.assistiveware.com
Click Infovox iVox, then Download. Don't get confused here. I don't mean
"Downloads" but "Download". Of course, you can get to this through the main
downloads link as well, however.

Re: using a hard drive for multiple back ups?

2010-07-29 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Sarah,

No, I have done this and there were no issues. (including doing a
restore.) My wife's computer generally does not have time machine on
it, but before doing a maintenace I was able to save everything and
then restore it. Also, when my daughter went to college I was able to
migrate just her user account from the time machine backup onto her
college computer.

Chris, I believe that a disk sparse image is actually a package with
several files hidden in one directory. I had read an article that
using sparse disk images is a good way to keep some materials on your
computer more secure. You can set an encription for the sparse disk
image. But since it is actually several files under the hood,
TimeMachine can just backup the sectors that changed rather then the
entire image.

Best regards,

jon

Does it make it's backup into a single file? If so you could probably
store that on the 1TB drive. That said, Time Machine's backup folder
simply stores incremental backups until it fills up the volume and then
starts deleting the oldest backups. So sooner or later that volume will
fill up. I just put a 2TB drive in my other machine for TM backups and
partitioned it into two 500GB volumes and a 1TB volume. The two 500s I
use for two time machine backups, my laptop over the network and the
local machine. Then the 1TB volume is just for general use. That seems
to work well. I haven't done enough re-partitioning to know if you can
resize or not without losing data. Even if you did, you could just run
another time machine backup after you're done. Chances of failure of
your machine at the same time that you're reconfiguring backups is
pretty small. Because everything should just be files on the backup
volume you shouldn't have anything stepping on anything.

mail navigation questions

2010-07-29 Thread Scott E. Ford
Hello everyone,
Sincerely,
Scott I really enjoy the mail application on the Mac. I have a bit of
trouble navigating the mail message table with my Macbook pro though. I would
like to reverse the way the messages are sorted, so that the newest messages
are on top, rather than on the bottom. I also cannot seem to figure out how to
get to the bottom of the table, holding the fn key and arrow keys does not seem
to work for going to the end and page down. I am using Gmail and I cannot seem
to get a grasp on how to delete messages. I love the fact that I can just hit
the backspace key and it goes away, however this does not seem to truly delete
the message, even if I purge the messages. Would someone have an explination?
Finally I cannot efficiently use the spell checker. Could someone help me with
these questions, or direct me to a tutorial that may explane how to work
through my questions?

suitable speakers?

2010-07-29 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Apologies if slightly OT, but I have a question that I reckon people on this
list will have an answer for.

I need a pair of very high quality speakers which can be used with my
Macbook pro, or indeed with the iPhone. However, they need to be
(relatively) portable. This arose because of a presentation I made in
Vienna a few weeks ago, and I was unable to play some auditory examples,
which would have illustrated a new way of presenting mathematics. I have
some more such presentations coming up, and would therefore appreciate help.

Cheers,

Dónal

I highly recommend the Cambridge Soundworks model twelve:
http://store.cambridgesoundworks.com/Model-Twelve-Transportable-System/M/B0002DURV2.htm.
I'm using it with my Macbook.
Very portable and sounds incredible. A little pricy, but well worth it.

Re: Tornado warning! (get away from windows)

2010-07-29 Thread Sarah Alawami
I can't help you with the dns issue but here is a message from another list of
how to convert text to mp3 or what not in itunes.

There are two ways to get text into audio.

in terminal, type "man say" without the quotes and press enter. I say this
because it has some different stuff you can do with it like specifying the file
format and the voice you want. the file you use for input must be in plain
text however.

The second method uses alex only and converts to an itunes track but you can
easily convert this to mp3.

to convert a file, open the app of choice such as preview, text edit or pages,
this is usually done by opening the file and letting the system choose the app
to open it with and we can talk about what to do if you don't like the default.

once the file is opened, press command-a to select the text in the file, press
controlll-f2 or controll-option-m to focus on the menu bar. move right to the
application menu, it will say text edit if you are in text edit for instance.
press down arrow to move to the "services submenu". right arrow and if you find
a send to itunes as a spoken track, press enter. if not, press enter on
"services preferences" this brings up system preferences and lands you in the
keyboard shortcuts menu. tab to categories and down arrow to services, tab and
you will be in a list of services. down arrow to the item for "ad to itunes as
a spoken track" and hit the space bar to select it. Press command-q to close
system preferences. Now, back to services, move to the app window as above,
move down to services, right arrow and press enter on ad to itunes as a spoken
track. Itunes will ope and begin playing your track after a period of time
depending on the size of the file you fed it.

To convert the file to mp3 once it is in itunes, press command-comma and in the
general tab, go to import settings, press space on this and choose mp3 encoder
from the pop up, customize it any way you like and click ok. press command-w
to close the preferences window.

press controll-f2 or vo-m to focus on the menu bar, left arrow to advanced
because it is closer to the left end, down arrow to convert to "create mp3
version" (it will not appear in the list if you don't configure the prefference
for it) above and press enter. once the file is converted, you can find it on
your hard drive burried deep in your home folder somewhere like this:
users/your name/music/itunes/itunesmedia/music/unknown album/text to speech.mp3.
or you can look for spoken text in the sources as a playlist. I'd tag this so
it is easier to find on the hd if you wanna say put it on your stream or other
mp3 player.

note: I should hadd here to change the rate of speaking at the top of your file
put this

[[rate xxx]] where xxx is the number of words per minute. so for example

[[rate 300]] would read the file at 300 words per minute.

Hope that helps.

Re: mail navigation questions

2010-07-29 Thread Linda Adams
Scott,

To reverse your messages so the newest will be at the top, arrow over to the
date column and press VO shift backslash.

To get to the top of your message list, press shift-function-VO and the left
arrow. To get to the bottom use shift-function-VO and the right arrow.

I wish that deleting the messages from Mail would delete them off the Gmail web
site, but it doesn't.

Re: mail navigation questions

2010-07-29 Thread Linda Adams
Scott,

I haven't done this myself, but here are some instructions for removing the
preview pane from Anne Robertson, a frequent and helpful contributor to this
list.

Navigate to the horizontal splitter above the message body
Bring the mouse to the VO cursor (VO command F5)
Double click with the physical mouse.

I haven't gotten a handle on clicking the mouse so if you need directions on
this, let the list know and I'm certain someone else will step up to the plate.

Thoughts on Magic Trackpad

2010-07-29 Thread Daniel Rowe
Hi all.
I took the plunge yesterday and bought the magic trackpad.
i've only used Vo with multi-touch trackpads briefly before as I have an iMac.
But because I use the iPhone I could see the benefits such an interface would
bring to Mac OS.

Having spent nearly two days with the trackpad, I personally thing that it is
the best thing to happen in assistive technology recently. To be able to
visualise how things are laid out on the screen is just amazing. It's larger
size is also an advantage. It has really changed the way how I use my Mac and
I won't be going back to using the numpad commander unless I have to.

Re: Tornado warning! (get away from windows)

2010-07-29 Thread Maurice Mines
Hello, first of all please please please please change the subject line. I
actually have my e-mail somewhat set to see these things. As it is tornado
warning season here in this part of the country a.k.a. the United States. To
running Windows in a virtual machine I have successfully been able to run
Kurzweil 1000 without problems. So it is doable you do not I think need to go
find iMac option. Because everything I've read about the Mac options for doing
this is complicated, confusing, and not to mention expensive at best. Just my
three cents worth. Hope your day is going well. PS I really wish it would rain
here is just way too hot, and somewhat humid for Colorado.

three finger click drag on the magic trackpad

2010-07-29 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
Hi list,

I've asked my local apple shop to give me a buzz when it gets here but i read
something about a three finger click drag feature with it.

Has anyone tried it out, and any success?

This could really help with some intuitive copying dragging and prioritizing
stuff.

Best regards,

Mail Navigation Tips and Take Control Books 50% off till August 3rd {was Re: mail navigation questions]

2010-07-29 Thread Esther

Hi Scott,

I'm late to this thread, but I'll add a couple of other suggestions.
In addition to using the sort command (VO-Shift-Backslash for English
input keyboards; VO-H twice to get the VoiceOver Commands menu and
select "Sort Column" for non-English keyboards that don't have a
"Backslash" key), to reorder any of the columns in Mail's "Message
Viewer" table (such as "Date Received"), you can move to the top or
bottom of the table by holding down Option+Up Arrow or Option+Down
Arrow keys and waiting just a short bit. (Donna Goodin got this tip
from the Accessibility team).

Also, even if you don't use threaded mode to view your mail, you can
move to the next or previous post in a thread by holding down the
Option key and tapping either the down arrow or up arrow key (results
of whether you get the "previous" or "next" post with up or down arrow
depend on how you've sorted your mail display).

Finally, this goes beyond your question of VoiceOver specific
operations with Mail, but a very good guide to the way that the Mail
Application works is "Take Control of Apple Mail in Snow Leopard".
The Take Control guides and their discounted bundles are on sale for
50% off through August 3rd. These guides are all available at modest
prices (typically $10 - $15 list price) in DRM-free, downloadable PDF
format. And now they're available in ePub format as well, if you want
to read your purchase in iBooks on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch,
as well as in Preview. You get access to all minor version updates
for free. Some of their guides have information I've never seen
covered at the same level in any other resource -- for example, "Take
Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" for setting up wireless
networks, or "Take Control of Mac OS X Backups", or "Take Control of
MobileMe". Esoteric questions about File Sharing methods (e.g. with
Windows devices) are also handled in these books. The web site
typically offers free samples of the books, as well as extensive
descriptions, so you can decide whether a particular book is likely to
be useful to you.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: using a hard drive for multiple back ups?

2010-07-29 Thread Chris Blouch
That makes sense. I poked at the sparseimage 'file' using terminal and
it actually is a directory. It had a handfull of text files (config
stuff I would guess) and then a jillion 83MB files all numbered in
order. I guess they just add or remove capacity on the virtual volume by
adding or removing another 83MB file. Interesting.

Chris, I believe that a disk sparse image is actually a package with

To reverse your messages so the newest will be at the top, arrow over to the
date column and press VO shift backslash.

To get to the top of your message list, press shift-function-VO and the left

I wish that deleting the messages from Mail would delete them off the Gmail

I haven't done this myself, but here are some instructions for removing
the preview pane from Anne Robertson, a frequent and helpful contributor
 to this list.

Navigate to the horizontal splitter above the message body
Bring the mouse to the VO cursor (VO command F5)
Double click with the physical mouse.

I haven't gotten a handle on clicking the mouse so if you need directions
on this, let the list know and I'm certain someone else will step up to
 the plate.

Re: screen curtain

2010-07-29 Thread Michael Thurman
if you hit f1 or function f1 you can turn the baclight completely off and then
do the screen curtain you have to do them in that order. if you do screen
curtain first and then turn down the backlight it will turn screen curtain back
off. the backlight is completely off when it says zero percent

case? Or is it normal to have to restart the screen curtain each time you

latest iTunes

2010-07-29 Thread Shen
It's quite interesting. I just updated to the latest iTunes, presumably version
9.2.1. Now, the "About iTunes" window is no longer accessible. It just says
"empty unknown".
I cannot even verify that I have version 9.2.1.
This version obviously did not go through a thorough accessibility test before
release.
Anyone else having the same issue?
