Hi Scott,

I'm late to this thread, but I'll add a couple of other suggestions. In addition to using the sort command (VO-Shift-Backslash for English input keyboards; VO-H twice to get the VoiceOver Commands menu and select "Sort Column" for non-English keyboards that don't have a "Backslash" key), to reorder any of the columns in Mail's "Message Viewer" table (such as "Date Received"), you can move to the top or bottom of the table by holding down Option+Up Arrow or Option+Down Arrow keys and waiting just a short bit. (Donna Goodin got this tip from the Accessibility team).

Also, even if you don't use threaded mode to view your mail, you can move to the next or previous post in a thread by holding down the Option key and tapping either the down arrow or up arrow key (results of whether you get the "previous" or "next" post with up or down arrow depend on how you've sorted your mail display).

Finally, this goes beyond your question of VoiceOver specific operations with Mail, but a very good guide to the way that the Mail Application works is "Take Control of Apple Mail in Snow Leopard". The Take Control guides and their discounted bundles are on sale for 50% off through August 3rd. These guides are all available at modest prices (typically $10 - $15 list price) in DRM-free, downloadable PDF format. And now they're available in ePub format as well, if you want to read your purchase in iBooks on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, as well as in Preview. You get access to all minor version updates for free. Some of their guides have information I've never seen covered at the same level in any other resource -- for example, "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network" for setting up wireless networks, or "Take Control of Mac OS X Backups", or "Take Control of MobileMe". Esoteric questions about File Sharing methods (e.g. with Windows devices) are also handled in these books. The web site typically offers free samples of the books, as well as extensive descriptions, so you can decide whether a particular book is likely to be useful to you.

Cheers,

Esther

Thanks again linda,
I had to have my Daughter do it and she could not make it happen until she shut down voice over, however she was able to get it. Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Scott

Scott,

I haven't done this myself, but here are some instructions for removing the preview pane from Anne Robertson, a frequent and helpful contributor to this list.

Navigate to the horizontal splitter above the message body
Bring the mouse to the VO cursor (VO command F5)
Double click with the physical mouse.

I haven't gotten a handle on clicking the mouse so if you need directions on this, let the list know and I'm certain someone else will step up to the plate.

Thank you so much Linda,
Man that makes such a differntce. As I was making the changes I discovered the message area. When I last used mail I was able to get rid of that area, would you happen to know how to colaps or get rid of the pain? Thank you.
Sincerely,
Scott

Scott,

To reverse your messages so the newest will be at the top, arrow over to the date column and press VO shift backslash.

To get to the top of your message list, press shift-function-VO and the left arrow. To get to the bottom use shift-function-VO and the right arrow.

I wish that deleting the messages from Mail would delete them off the Gmail web site, but it doesn't.

Linda

Hello everyone,
Sincerely,
Scott I really enjoy the mail application on the Mac. I have a bit of trouble navigating the mail message table with my Macbook pro though. I would like to reverse the way the messages are sorted, so that the newest messages are on top, rather than on the bottom. I also cannot seem to figure out how to get to the bottom of the table, holding the fn key and arrow keys does not seem to work for going to the end and page down. I am using Gmail and I cannot seem to get a grasp on how to delete messages. I love the fact that I can just hit the backspace key and it goes away, however this does not seem to truly delete the message, even if I purge the messages. Would someone have an explination? Finally I cannot efficiently use the spell checker. Could someone help me with these questions, or direct me to a tutorial that may explane how to work through my questions?
