Chris, although this may be unacceptable, at least it restarts and does not take the entire machine down, which has been my experience with windows-based screen readers. Even though Apple Accessibility may not have responded, they do take these messages seriously. I cannot say why you did not receive a response, but generally they do respond. I initially thought I had some issues with Safari 5, but I have to do some more testing since most sites I use regularly are behaving fine. And in Apple's defense, they may not have encountered any problems or did not have the opportunity to test with every possible site. SO, continue to provide feedback, you are not being ignored. Setting up Voicemail on Iphone
Hi all, I am happy to say that I finally got my new Iphone activated after being on the phone with Apple tech support and AT&T's tech support. I have no idea how to set up my voicemail. I double tap voicemail and it tells me I have to enter a password, but there seems to be no way to confirm the password. What am I doing wrong? I also have another VoiceOver question how do you change the voice to use Karen instead of Samantha? I really dislike Samantha and love Karen. I can get to settings, general but I'm not seeing the accessibility tab. Is it on the next page of the Iphone screen? Am I missing something? THank you for any assistance you can provide. Re: some more questions about streams and macs
Hi Olivia, I think I can help you. I say think very lightly. I used to be a Stream user who used Windows, and obviously now have switched to the Mac. Okay let me see if I remember the first question, to format the SD card, you do it on the Stream directly. This is accomplished by pressing the 7 key on the numpad a few times till you hear format SD card. It will ask you to confirm by pressing the pound key. Once you press it, it will say formatting SD card and report back when the format is complete. Once that is done, you will have folders like VR audible, VR music etc. Yes, you can place talking books on the same card as music. You just place the talking books in to the VR DTB folder. I'm switching from the stream to the Ipod on my Iphone, I think the largest card the Stream can handle is a 16GB but I could be wrong. It is much faster if you were to get a Stream to copy content via the card reader than the Stream's USB port itself. The Stream shows up on the desktop once you insert the SD card in to a card reader. You just hit command O to open like normal and all the folders are there. I hope this has helped you. The only thing I'm unsure about is the Audible authorization. That might have to be done on a Windows machine, since the Audible version on the Mac assumes you are using Itunes on an Ipod. Well, I hope I have helped. Have a wonderful day. Thank you for your help on the Iphone, it is much appreciated. RE: some more questions about streams and macs
I As a stream user I would say this. Remember you will also have to pay for a storage card. That being the case, if I didn't have one I would regard any Apple device with 16 GB, or even better 32 or the incredible 64 GB of storage as a better bet. Synchronising will be much easier and I can't think of anything the stream can do that Apples can't provided you have a Daisy player app. The media player control knocks spots of anything in any gadget apart from the Stream, and in some ways is much better. Hi, If I'm not mistaken you change the system language to change the voice. It isn't in accessibility. I don't remember where it is but theres a podcast on www.blindcooltech.com that talks about it. it is the iPod touch podcast. Re: is anyone else bothered by safari five>
Agreed. I can't count the number of times I had to restart my windows machines, because the screen reader, or some other program running in conjunction with it, crashed the whole machine. Most notably, this happened when I was writing a huge paper in college. I lost a good chunk of the paper. I got through a year of graduate school with out my mac crashing on me once. Having VO as a native part of the OS is a huge advantage, IMO, and I'd never go back to windows with out of date third party access solutions like Jaws! RE: some more questions about streams and macs
If I didn't have a stream now, and I liked the way the apple products work, which I hope I will when I get my hands on them in a few weeks, I would say a 64 GB iPhone 4G would meet so many needs that a Stream would not be worth the money. Hi Nick, I doubt its possible to reproduce the bug on the audible site without having an account, because its the cooky that seems to cause the problem, and you wouldn't have one of those unless you had an account and signed in. But there have also been problems reported by people trying to use various portions of the apple website, and there is the IChat problem as well. and why entering audible from a google search, even with a cooky and an account should work but entering it from either a bookmark or by typing it in doesn't, I haven't a clue. mary -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: some more questions about streams and macs
Olivia, I have the Stream and the Book Sense. I like the Book Sense better. It's smaller, can record in more formats right out of the box, plays NLS, Audible, RFB&D, all sorts of text files. It's about 1/3 the size of the Stream. The XT model even has an FM radio and blue tooth connectivity, of which the Stream has neither. Only drawback to this is it's somewhere between $400 and $500 instead of $329 or so. It works with the Mac very well for transferring files. The XT model even came with an 8 gig card and 4 gigs of internal storage, which is very handy. I hope this helps instead of confusing you further. I do believe you would still have to authorize it on Audible with a windows PC, but I'm not 100% sure of this one. On Jun 14, 2010, at 9:55 AM, Olivia Norman wrote: This is very helpful. Hi, I'm going to play devils advoket here. The advantage of the removable storage is this. 1. If the card dies, you throw it away and buy another one. Before I get emails saying cards are not likely to die, I just had a 2gb die on me. (smile) 2. If all you can afforde is 8gb, buy an 8gb SD card and when money allows buy a 16 or 32 gb sd card. you still have access to your 8GB card. Victor Stream
The nice thing about a Victor Stream is that you can carry your entire audio library in one device. It plays specialized files from the NLS BARD site, Bookshare, and RFB&D (never tried RFB&D personally). It also plays files from commercial sources like audible, standard mp3 and wav, and now (with the additional soft pack) iTunes. You can, moreover, listen to text file formats like txt, rtf, and html. In theory, you can listen to contracted braille files, but I've found that to be a little glitchy in 3.0 and 3.1. finally, it's an easy-to-use voice recorder, not as good as, say, the Olympus, but the quality of the recording is very nice and serves my own needs perfectly. My own unit has lots of different file types on it, including music. Your other questions have been answered. When you insert a blank SD card into the Stream, Victor places the folder structure on the card. You then insert the card into your Mac's reader, and move files into the right folders: music into the music folder, BARD and Bookshare books into the digital Talking Books folder, rtf and html files into the text folder, etc. As far as Audible goes, the only thing you need Windows for is activating the device. The Stream itself with SD card inserted needs to be connected to the PC via USB cable for activation to take place. that's done once per SD card. After that, the card is permanently activated unless it becomes corrupt and needs to be formatted (i.e., erased), so you can forget all about Windows until you need a new card. I think people are right about the maximum capacity SD being 16 gb, but that's an awful lot of listening. RE: Victor Stream
I have a 32 GB card in mine Cheers Dave -Original Message- From: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com [mailto:macvisionar...@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Ana G Sent: Monday, June 14, 2010 6:26 PM To: macvisionaries@googlegroups.com Subject: Victor Stream The nice thing about a Victor Stream is that you can carry your entire audio library in one device. I've got an 8 GB card, and I've got 40 BARD books, 9 audible books, 12 book-length text files, and a couple of albums worth of music on mine. Build 10F569 of Mac OS X 10.6.4 Seeded to Developers
Hi folks. I thought this one is a little bit interesting for us. The new build comes six days after the last seed and continues to list no known issues with the update. As with the last several developers builds, testers are asked to once again focus their efforts on Graphics Drivers, SMB, USB, Voice Over, and VPN. Seeding of Mac OS X 10.6.4 began in late April and today's build represents the eighth version pushed out to developers for testing. A public release of Mac OS X 10.6.4 had been rumored to occur during last week's Worldwide Developers Conference, but Apple appears to still be putting the final touches on the next maintenance update for Mac OS X Snow Leopard. The most recent public version of Snow Leopard, Mac OS X 10.6.3, was released in late March. DJ Sortware on the mac?
I have a couple DJ gigs coming up and I want to know if there is anything that will allow me to setup play lists and maybe even preview songs before playing them out loud? iTunes is cool, and I know how to do play lists on that, but I can't send that to another card, and I don't want VO to be yelling at the crowd while they are dancing. lol. So Any thing out there that would be good for doing parties and such? Thanks. GF -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. RE: Build 10F569 of Mac OS X 10.6.4 Seeded to Developers
They mentioned VO in the last few builds of 10.6.4. They talked about it in 10.6.3. Who knows what was actually changed. I've never found a list of actual changes to VO, so, when ever they list it, I pretty much interpret it as meaning "and other stuff, too". If you were to get one of those ipod earbuds with the built-in mics that one jack would be able to handle input/output. You could then have the earbuds in and monitor what you were recording. Re: Audio Hijack Pro Files
Hi. In audio hijack pro, the location for saved recordings is set on a per session basis. So what you want to do is select the session you want in the table, and then select the recording tab. You can see on that screen where the recordings are saved, and if you want to change that location, press the select button. HTH. Re: An audiohijack pro and Macbook question
Hi. The audio jack on newer mac books can actually serve as an input or output jack. At least I know the macbook pros can do this, I assume the mac books can as well. In the sound section of system preferences, you can set which mode you want the audio port to be in. I've done this before when recording the iPod touch for podcasts. Of course, depending on what you're needing the line in for, you might also need a usb headset or something. Re: Audio Hijack Pro Files
Hi Chad, Someone may have answered this already, but all you have to do is before you record, VO right arrow to the recording tab and select it by hitting VO space. If you VO right arrow, Audio Hijack should tell you where it is saving the files. Sometimes, they automatically save to the Audio Hijack folder even if you tell Audio Hijack to save them somewhere else. You can find this folder by hitting VO Space which will bring up spotlight. Type Audio space Hijack and hit enter. It will bring audio hijack, hit enter on audio hijack folders and that should take care of it. I hope that helps. Re: FX with highjack pro
Hey man. The fx tab shows a grid matrix. With voiceover, you are only able to add one effect because what you have to do is click on an empty square in the grid. However, VO doesn't see the squares, so only reacts when you click on the matrix when it's empty. Hit delete and make sure the matrix is empty, then vo click. A menu should pop up and allow you to add an effect. From there, it really a pita to make anything work. It's even hard to bring the window of the effect you added back to the foreground if you close and reopen the app. We'll get on skype and work with it this week if you want. Re: An audiohijack pro and Macbook question
Hi. How are you recording the show? Is it a line in from a cable box or VCR or something? If so, then you won't need a headset at all. When I used the line in, I was doing a podcast about the ipod touch, so I needed to be able to record both my voice and the touch. That's why I needed the headset. Safari5 and bard web sight
Hello everyone, I've just noticed that when searching for a book at nlsbard.loc.gov, vo can't seem to correctly interpret the reading order in the descriptions. Words are chopped up. I would like to know if anybody else who downloads nls books can notice this. Just search for an author or keyword. I never noticed this with Safari4, but I haven't been to the bard sight in a while and don't know if they changed anything. Re: Audio Hijack Pro Files
Each session is basically a preset for audio hijack pro. Each session can include things like: the audio source (often an application or hardware device), the output (an audio device or silence output), recording options (what format to save the audio and where to save it), scheduling (making it hijack something at a scheduled time), and the effects grid which we currently can't use. For example, I have my skype session set up to save in aiff format, because I use skype for recording podcasts, and I'll want to edit those files when I'm done recording. On the other hand, I sometimes use the safari session to record streaming audio. I tend to only listen to the stuff I record once and then delete it, so I can record it as mp3 or AAC since it's smaller. Hope this made sense.
