Re: Louis for mac

2010-05-01 Thread John J. Boyer
Louis should work with Snow Leopard. Be sure you get the Intel versions
of the liblouis and liblouisxml libraries. There are already Danish
tables, though they may not be the latest updated versions. They will
not work with VoiceOver.

Re: -- Question on Autostarting a VM under Fusion

2010-05-01 Thread Scott Howell
Nic, that would be nice if it would really help, but in this case it seems to
be an issue between VO and Fusion. I used to be able to do this, but so far no
luck. I am going to try a few things, but I am curious how you have the
settings under navigation in the VO utility configured.
Thanks for the offer, but knowing how your navigation settings are configured,
might help. Otherwise, I need to find a way to reach out to VmWare and get this
issue figured out. THis will be very important for me when I get a new Macbook
Pro at work with Fusion installed.

Hi Scott,

I really just have everything following one another. The table doesn't seem to
track right, so I have to move the mouse there with VO-Command-F5, then
control-click on the machine I want. It's very strange why you're not getting
any results.

Re: -- Question on Autostarting a VM under Fusion

2010-05-01 Thread Scott Howell
Hi Nic,

Yes, it is strange and it is the same issue my friend is having as well. Seems
when trying to route the mouse pointer to the location, VO says there is
nothing under the mouse. So, that would indicate the mouse pointer is not
tracking with VO or for some reason cannot enter that table area. I'm going to
get my wife to look and see if she can explain what is happening and then I
will have a better idea of what the problem is. Thanks for the info.

Re: -- Question on Autostarting a VM under Fusion

2010-05-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

When you try using VO-Command-F5, it should say something like "Virtual machine
list". Make sure VoiceOver is actually focussed on the item, and that you are
using the VoiceOver keys to navigate the table. The only thing I can think of
is that if VoiceOVer doesn't track keyboard focus properly either, this would
be the fix.

Re: -- Question on Autostarting a VM under Fusion

Nic,

Just curious, but does the table say something like the name of the VM and this
is s a dimmed table? There is some sort of tracking issue and I've changed all
the possible settings. I did however use the simulated mouse keys, but even
when locating the table, it says it is dimmed out, so there may be something
else going on here.

Hi nic, Carollyn, Chriss and all,

Thanks so much for all your patience, and answering all my questions, I just
have 2 more,

I've installed adium and thank god found the set up assistant, and now, I
cant figure out how to read messages! Could someone tell me how to do this,
please?

I also need to port messages, addresses, and rules over from Microsoft
outlook to the mac. I have Imap enabled and gmail is working, I'm just
wondering, how can I port messages, addresses, and also rules over? Can I
make rules and create mail boxes from messages that are already in my inbox?

Thanks so much again everyone,

Kerie

Hi,

Adium totally rocks. You should get it. No, everyone should get it. I don't
understand the fact that VoiceOver reads the chat area to the left of the
input field as an "unknown", but when interacting it will say " interact
with HTML content".

Didn't notice a direct answer to this. Adium is a chat application where you
can connect to another chat user and then type messages back and forth in
real time. There are a number of chat services like AIM or MSN Messenger
which have their own clients but Adium is more universal in that it connects
to numerous different services. Of course you will need to create an account
on each of those to use it with more than one.

Hi all,

I a very new mac and voice over user, I just had some questions.

First, about mail. I have not set up mail yet, as I wanted to ask some
advice. I have a Gmail account, and know from reading, that you may set up
Gmail to work in apple mail using either pop or imap, I just wondering, does
it make a difference in terms of voice over, whether I use pop or imap?

I don't think it does, Kerie. While I use IMAP with my Gmail account, I have
never heard anything to the effect that POP wouldn't work.

Next, are the mail boxes which can be created in apple mail meant to be used
as substitutes for folders like those which can be created in outlook using
windows, say for lists? And if I subscribed to many lists, can I, and do I,
need to create rules so the messages from lists go to the mail boxes, and
don just go to my inbox?

Mail lets you create mailboxes into which you can organize materials. You
can create rules to automatically have specific messages placed in specific
mailboxes or, alternatively, you can manually move them to these mailboxes
from the inbox.

Next, when it comes to instant messaging, can aidium connect to windows
live, or am I best installing windows live for Mac, which I believe, correct
me if I wrong, is available from Microsoft?

This was the question I couldn't answer.

And lastly, for now, is there a way to find out the title of a window, like
in jaws for windows?

Kerie, using the Voice Over keys (Command Option) along with F2 tells you
the title of the window that you are currently in. This command works very
well in the Mail program.

I hope you all won mind me asking what could be considered by some as silly
questions, but like I say, I very new to apple and voice over, so just
thought someone might give me some advice.

Thanks for any help in advance,

Kerie

Alright guys, I'm fiddling with fine reader. Now I got this to work at a

When it opens it presents me the tasks window.
I choose to get my immages from cannoscan lide90 and hit the convert to text
button. I've tried this on the convert to pdf button as well with the same
result.
Up comes the cannon twane window and I click the scan button.
Fine reader presents me with a window saying, "one pages processed with a

Unfortunately at this point the finish button, the close
button and all the options in the menu bar are disabled. Is this normal? I'm
going to reboot and see if that helps, but I've gottn it to present me a

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

If you dob';t understand IMAP, you can pay through the nose!

2010-05-01 Thread Michael Busboom
Hello Friends,

I just returned from the Sight City show in Frankfurt where I had the
opportunity to check out some really cool technology. While there, I chose to
use my mobile broadband service instead of paying for the daily hotel rates for
a wireless connection in the hotel. WLAN would have cost me 19 Euros a day.

Here in Austria, I have a pay-as-you-go mobile broadband plan in which I pay 4
Euros per gigabyte. Since you pay a lot more when you use the service outside
your home country, I decided to only check my mail and only read the messages
that I needed to deal with. To my way of thinking, I would thus have the
convenience of being able to check my mail as often as was necessary without
consuming too much data. In all truthfulness, I was under the impression that
with IMAP, I was only downloading message headers and would only download the
actual message or attachment when I pressed Enter on the message I wanted to
read.

When I returned to Vienna this morning, I discovered that I had downloaded 37
MB and had a 90 Euro data bill!

Here's my question: Is there any way when using IMAP to only download message
headers and then to only download the messages I really need to read? If not,
is there any way for me to use my Mac for checking e-mail outside Austria
without running up such a large data bill?

One person said that I may have been forcing the Mac mail program to download
every message because I may have activated some sort of Spam or Junk folder
filter setting. The idea was that in order to determine whether a message
might be spam, it first had to be downloaded in its entirety.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Mike
P.S. I fly to Belgium on Monday, and I'd dearly love to have a solution prior
to that trip--!

Hi,

My MacBook has 3GB so if I run 1.5GB for VMWare that only leaves 1.5GB
for the Mac. If the Mac runs out it starts doing 'virtual memory'
which swaps older chunks of RAM to the hard drive which is orders of

hard drive you're in for a world of hurt. You might actually be faster

another mail question

2010-05-01 Thread May McDonald
Ok, I think I got the problem fixed, at least I hope so, smile. Thanks for that
advise I never would have found it otherwise.

Now that I have my gmail set up again, how do I get it to put all my gmail
folders into apple mail? I don't remember how I did that before. I thought by
telling it to sync the gmail account that it would get the folders but that
didn't work.

Re: switching from windows, some questions?

2010-05-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

Sorry for the time. I've been meaning to get to this one. :)

Adium.

When you locate the "Unknown" item in the chat window with someone, you can
read the messages with the VoiceOver keys. You can also set up chats to read
automatically using the system voice, or any other voice you select in Adium.
Just go to preferences (Command-Comma), then interact with the toolbar. Find
the "Events" button, then choose the event you want and click add.

As for Mail rules, I don't know much about it when it comes to importing. I
imagine it might be possible, but I just recreated them.

Re: why is everything disabled in fine reader

2010-05-01 Thread erik burggraaf
Growls! I've figured it out. What a pain in the neck.

essentially, fine reader was hanging because the cannon twayne driver wouldn't
let go of the scan until I delt with an invisible window. Honestly, maybe I
can dumb this down with a little tweaking of my Scanner settings, but right now
I'm not sure whether it's a bigger pain in the ass using fine reader or opening
up my vm to use k1000. Neither option particularly appeals at the moment.

As far as the clicking of the scan button, the window I have for my lide90 is
pretty useable. I press fn+vo+right arrow to get to the scan icon, which is
the last object on the window. Then I place my right thumb on the track pad
button and my right middle finger on the f5 and press vo+command+f5. Then I
press the track pad button twice quickly with my thumb. It's inelegant, but it
works.

Hope this helps,

Hi,
The scangear window is *not* inaccessible. If it was, how would i be able to
use it every time? True you have to use the physical mouse or maybe turn on
mouse keys to go to the actual scanning button, but for me at least it works
all the time. Had it been a hit or miss, i'd agreed to some extent, but it
works for me all the time.

Re: why is everything disabled in fine reader

2010-05-01 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Krister.

My roomate uses a lide200 and I thought he was using it OK last year when we
were scanning in rental applications, but I went to use his for something a
couple of weeks ago and it was totally useless. The canoscan window popped up
and there was nothing at all in the window. Not even as I recall a minimize or
close button. Just a totally blank window. Maybe that is the experience Anne
is having.

Re: why is everything disabled in fine reader

2010-05-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Eric,

It doesn't bother me that neither of my Canon scanners work directly with
FineReader since I'm used to using VueScan which produces really good images.
It's just that a lot of people don't want to be bothered using two apps to do
the job. VueScan opens FineReader automatically once the scanning is done, so
for me it's straightforward.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: why is everything disabled in fine reader

2010-05-01 Thread erik burggraaf
I'd rather have one program myself, and I'd definitely rather teach one program
if it will do the job.

I'm settling in with fine reader now. It's clunky, but I don't want to read
novels with it or anything.

Changing voice at login

2010-05-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

A very recent switcher on the CeciMac list just posted this trick to get
VoiceOver to speak with any voice you like at login.

When the Login window comes up and Alex starts speaking, hold down VO-Command
and use the left or right arrow key to find Default Voice, then the down arrow
to select the voice you want. From now on, it will be your selected voice that
comes up at Login.

This is particularly useful for those using VO in other languages.

Cheers,

Anne

Firefox on the Mac

2010-05-01 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
about firefox, someone has posted a bugreport on bugzilla about firefox 3.6.3
and the missing support for voiceover.
They closed the bug very fast because it was already reported.
So, I don't think that it makes sense to posts more bugreports.
I think , it should be better to count up my bugreport.

The site of bugzilla is not that accessible so, I think, you need sighted
assistance to do this.

I don't want to say at all that safari and vo are not working well but, some
websites work bad or not with other browsers than e.g. firebox..

so, here is the link and info:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=560136

--- Comment #1 from Marco Zehe (:MarcoZ) 2010-04-19

We are aware that Firefox isn't currently accessible on Mac OS X yet.

Seems when trying to route the mouse pointer to the location, VO says
there is nothing under the mouse. So, that would indicate the mouse

Hi,

There are good alternatives to MS Office. MS Office is not fully accessible
yet, but it is said that it will be written in Cocoa, most likely making it
accessible. The Mac has a basic Text Editor called Text Edit, which is a lot
better than Wordpad and Notepad on Windows. You have suites such as iWork and
Open Office, which will probably perform the tasks you want.

Web browsing is very intuitive. There is simply nothing bad I can say about it.
It works absolutely great, and the fact there is no buffer to load the page
into makes you able to navigate a site even before the page has loaded. I don't
want to rant on how good it is. :)

Re: New to mac

2010-05-01 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

I personally prefer iWorks myself, but that is really only because in Open
Office, each line is shown as another edit field. I still believe that is the
case.

As for web browsing, you can jump to certain blocks of text. With the
introduction of Web spots in Mac OS X 10.6, it can sort the page so that with
one command, you can jump to the areas of the page that may be of most interest
to you. Of course, you can also go by elements.

I really have not found any part of Mac OS inaccessible. There might be the
occasional glitch, but those are quickly fixed or there is an easy workaround.

Re: New to mac

2010-05-01 Thread John J Herzog
Edward,
For a great demo of voiceover and the mac's web browser, head over to the blind
cool tech web site. Then, search for the words mac demo. I don't want to spoil
it, but one of the really cool things about no buffers is that you get to see
information change on the page dynamically as it happens. Mike, the presenter
of the podcast, goes to sirius satellite radio's web site, and shows you how
you can view information with voiceover as it's changing. The nice thing is you
don't have to do any virtual buffer refreshing commands or any other of that
nonsense. I think an audio demo of the mac will do more for you than any of our
descriptions can.
If you want me to post the direct link to you, please let me know. But needless
to say, I am a happy mac convert.

worth it, but ya got to hang in there while you get used to the different ways
