Downloading MP3, thank you

2010-03-30 Thread M BROWN
Thank all those who responded to my query about downloading MP3 files. However,
none of the suggestions have worked. I have tried holding down the
shift/control/option keys while pressing the letter M. This does bring up a
menu, but within that menu there is nothing about saving target or anything
similar. I have also held down the option key and pressed enter while on the
link for the file I want to download. This merely downloads a html document
relating to the archive page of the Blind Cool Tec site. Any further
suggestions would be very much appreciated.
Kind regards, Martin

One final suggestion. You can always use VO-command-f5 to bring the mouse focus
to that link, hold control and then click the physical mouse. That will bring
up the context menu.

Accessing the "sort column" command on non-English language input keyboards [was Re: skype and history]

2010-03-30 Thread Esther

Hello Annie,

On non-English input keyboards you need to use the VoiceOver Commands
menu (VO+H twice) to access the "Sort Column" function. Make sure
that you have first interacted with the column (VO+Shift+Down Arrow),
then hold down the Control+Option keys and tap the "H" key twice.
Then select the option for "Sort Column". Sorting can be done in
either ascending or descending order, so if you want to reverse the
order in which a column is sorted, apply the "Sort Column" command
again. The other command you might commonly have to access through
the VoiceOver Commands menu is the one to expand or collapse
disclosure triangles. In many instances where you need to expand or
collapse entries, such as in "Get Info" windows for items selected in
Finder, VO+Space will work. However, if you need to expand the list
of Radio Streams in iTunes, so you can select and play a particular
station, or to expand the folder for a podcast subscription you have
just subscribed to in iTunes, so that you can view and play individual
episodes, you'll need to do this through the VoiceOver Commands menu
(VO+H twice) and then select the entry for "Toggle Disclosure
Triangle" to expand or collapse entries. Again, it is important that
you interact before you bring up the Commands menu because the listed
commands depend on context -- if you're not in a table with columns
you won't see an option to "Sort Column", etc.

The two commands I've described ("Sort Column" and "Toggle Disclosure
Triangle") are read out as using the "Vertical Line" key and the
"Backslash" key. On an English language input keyboard, the "Vertical
Line" key is "Shift+Backslash", and the "Backslash" key is located at
the far right of keyboard, just below the "Delete" key and above the
"Return" key. Non-English language keyboards use this key position
for accented characters that are not used in English, and use
"Backslash" and "Vertical Line" keys under their extended keyboard
that requires pressing the "Option" key to generate the character.
This is why it is necessary to make the selection through the Commands
Menu.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Downloading MP3, thank you

2010-03-30 Thread Esther

Hello Martin,

There are actually two issues you are experiencing in downloading MP3
files, and one is specific to the design of the Blind Cool Tech web
pages: you first have to interact (VO+Shift+Down Arrow) with the link
entry before you can use either of the suggestions that were made
(e.g. bring up the context menu with VO+Shift+M and find the option to
download the linked item or to save it as a file, or use the keyboard
shortcut of Option+Enter to force downloading of the file).

I usually access the Blind Cool Tech RSS feed at:
http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml
instead of using the main web page for this reason, and also because
the feed page is much faster to load as well as not having the links
embedded in elements so that you first have to interact to access
them. However, only the 40 latest episodes are listed on the feed
site, so you may need to go to the main BCT site for earlier
episodes. You can also subscribe to the Blind Cool Tech podcasts in
iTunes by navigating to the "Advanced" menu on the iTunes menu bar (VO
+Shift+M then press "A"), arrowing down to "Subscribe to Podcast…",
pressing Enter, and then typing or pasting in the feed address into
the dialogue window that comes up, and press (VO-Space) the "OK" button.

The podcasts will show up in iTunes under the "Podcasts" playlists.
You'll need to select this in the sources table of iTunes (after
interacting), then navigate to the Songs table, interact, and expand
the list of podcasts with VO-Shift-Backslash. Then you can start any
episode playing by pressing enter on the highlighted episode and
pressing the space bar to pause/resume play.

HTH. Subscribing to a podcast is not usually so involved; they still
haven't fixed the bug in the Blind Cool Tech episodes listed at the
iTunes feed that cropped up a couple of years ago. You might just be
able to use the "Subscribe" button at the iTunes Store, but the way
I've outlined will work for sure.

Cheers,

Esther

Hi Teresa,

I think I've seen your name on a number of Linux lists. Anyway... The short
answer is that I'm not sure. Having said that, Mac OS X is base on UNIX, so in
theory, it should be possible to use BRLTTY through the command line. You would
need to get a USB to Serial adapter though, as there are no serial ports on the
modern Mac. Have you looked at Mac Ports?
http://www.macports.org

This site has a lot of ports from UNIX etc.

Re: logic 9 express accessibility

2010-03-30 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, if you have a control logic compatible control surface then pro is usible.
I don't know about express, but I think if I wanted a lite version of logic I'd
start with garage band. it's cheeper and more than adequate for learning
purposes.

Best,

Re: Downloading MP3, thank you

2010-03-30 Thread M BROWN
Brilliant! That has solved my problem. As you rightly point out, one must first
interact with the link using vo shift plus down arrow. Then using vo shift M
brings up the context menu in which the option to download the target is
located. You have no doubt saved me a heart attack or at least pulling out all
my remaining hair by your excellent suggestion. I have been trying to solve
this problem for several weeks, and would like to thank all, but in particular
you, for helping me find a resolution.
All the best from a very wet and cold Ireland.

  Hello Martin,

There are actually two issues you are experiencing in downloading MP3 files,
and one is specific to the design of the Blind Cool Tech web pages: you first
have to interact (VO+Shift+Down Arrow) with the link entry before you can use
either of the suggestions that were made (e.g. bring up the context menu with
VO+Shift+M and find the option to download the linked item or to save it as a
file, or use the keyboard shortcut of Option+Enter to force downloading of the
file).

I usually access the Blind Cool Tech RSS feed at:
  http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml
instead of using the main web page for this reason, and also because the feed
page is much faster to load as well as not having the links embedded in
elements so that you first have to interact to access them. However, only the
40 latest episodes are listed on the feed site, so you may need to go to the
main BCT site for earlier episodes. You can also subscribe to the Blind Cool
Tech podcasts in iTunes by navigating to the "Advanced" menu on the iTunes menu
bar (VO+Shift+M then press "A"), arrowing down to "Subscribe to Podcast…",
pressing Enter, and then typing or pasting in the feed address into the
dialogue window that comes up, and press (VO-Space) the "OK" button.

The podcasts will show up in iTunes under the "Podcasts" playlists. You'll
need to select this in the sources table of iTunes (after interacting), then
navigate to the Songs table, interact, and expand the list of podcasts with
VO-Shift-Backslash. Then you can start any episode playing by pressing enter
on the highlighted episode and pressing the space bar to pause/resume play.

HTH. Subscribing to a podcast is not usually so involved; they still haven't
fixed the bug in the Blind Cool Tech episodes listed at the iTunes feed that
cropped up a couple of years ago. You might just be able to use the "Subscribe"
button at the iTunes Store, but the way I've outlined will work for sure.

  Cheers,

  Esther

One final suggestion. You can always use VO-command-f5 to bring the mouse
focus to that link, hold control and then click the physical mouse. That will
bring up the context menu.

On Mar 30, 2010, at 6:33 AM, M BROWN wrote:

Thank all those who responded to my query about downloading MP3 files.
However, none of the suggestions have worked.

RE: logic 9 express

2010-03-30 Thread Bryan Smart
There is nothing for sequencing.

Get your money back.

Sorry.

Perhaps when the new Pro Tools release comes with the accessibility fixes, you
can buy that. The only public statement about when that will be available was
sometime this Spring. The next release for all Pro Tools users will include the
changes, though, so, when-ever that comes, then the accessibility will, also.

RE: reaper

2010-03-30 Thread Bryan Smart
It could be better, if someone spent the time to write a plug in to speech
enable the track view, like in Windows. I don't think there is enough money in
that project, though, to convince any devs to take on the work right now. I
doubt that people would pay $50 for a plug to speech-enable a $40 app. So,
you'll have to wait for someone that is really smart, but has a lot of time on
their hands that they don't want to spend with their friends, family, or
hobbies.

Garage Band only works with the built-in sampler. You can add sounds and
instruments to it with Jam Packs, but you can't add any other synths, as far as

Burning ISO Images

Hi,

Recently, I have had to try out a number of different GNU/Linux distros. I use
Safari to download them from their web sites and then, using disk utility, burn
the DVD. I got this to work with the SpeakUp Modified Fedora but all other
downloads cause Disk Utility to crap out on verification.

This is on a six month old MacBook Pro 13 which shouldn't have any really bad
problems yet.

Any ideas?

I am guessing that is correct. Perhaps it has not been ported over yet - if

I've found this too. Have you tried to reduce the burning speed to the lowest
possible speed for your machine? Sometimes for some reason when DVDs etc are
burned quickly, some sort of corruption takes place. This makes me wonder why
such speeds exist if corruption occurs after using them.

Re: toast?

2010-03-30 Thread Chris Blouch
.toast files are created by Toast, a commercial CD burning application.
Depending what is in there it might just be an ISO file. If so you could
try renaming it to .iso and burn it with the Apple Disk Utility. Another
forum said that LiquidCD will burn .toast files.

http://www.maconnect.ch/index.php?page=liquidcd&lang=en

In either case, I don't think it's a file format that is designed for
distributing archived files. It's mean more as a file to feed a burner.
If the iso trick works you might be able to just mount it via disk
utility rather than burn it.

Re: Burning ISO Images

2010-03-30 Thread Brent Harding
How do you install these without site on the Mac? Could I just use Boot Camp
and then toss in a linux disk and go? I know the instructions I found on the
Ubuntu say you have to use a certain utility loaded from the boot loader
that won't speak to sync the partition table after installing or something,
but is there now a way around that? I thought they said it was a menu-based
thing you have to boot into. I tried one of the versions of Ubuntu awhile
back using Easyvmx's online utility that basically creates an empty virtual
machine for VMWare Player, but with heavy activity in the sense of a lot of
text being generated, Orca just locks, and I end up needing a whole system
restart as you can't kill it easily in this state either. I think that's to
do with the sound driver in VMWare, so I'd rather try it the real way on my
Macbook, but don't have the sighted help. Is there an easy way?

Re: Downloading MP3, thank you

2010-03-30 Thread Chris Blouch
It's unfortunate that this site has so many HTML errors which makes
accessibility poor. Any basic validator will flag the missing alt text
on images, misspelled href and broken link constructs. Everybody fat
fingers stuff sometimes but that's why these error checkers exist and
not using them (or not fixing the errors they find) is just bad
practice. Here is the output from the w3c's validator showing 361 errors:

http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blindcooltech.com%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=Inline&group=0

Deque makes a nice accessibility validator which you can scan a page for
free. It found 1238 errors:

http://worldspace.deque.com/wsservice/eval/reports/consolidate/report.jsp?siteid=10014&collPractices=ACCESSIBILITY;&compliance=W2_LEVEL_A&page=http://www.blindcooltech.com

Of course 328K of HTML for a home page is huge, which probably bogs down
any processing VO is doing to find headers to jump to or whatever. Would
be nice to have the page break the content into sections. Maybe by year,
or whatever.

Esther wrote:

Hello Martin,

There are actually two issues you are experiencing in downloading MP3
files, and one is specific to the design of the Blind Cool Tech web
pages: you first have to interact (VO+Shift+Down Arrow) with the link
entry before you can use either of the suggestions that were made
(e.g. bring up the context menu with VO+Shift+M and find the option to
download the linked item or to save it as a file, or use the keyboard
shortcut of Option+Enter to force downloading of the file).

I usually access the Blind Cool Tech RSS feed at:
http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml
instead of using the main web page for this reason, and also because
the feed page is much faster to load as well as not having the links
embedded in elements so that you first have to interact to access
them. However, only the 40 latest episodes are listed on the feed
site, so you may need to go to the main BCT site for earlier episodes.
You can also subscribe to the Blind Cool Tech podcasts in iTunes by
navigating to the "Advanced" menu on the iTunes menu bar (VO+Shift+M
then press "A"), arrowing down to "Subscribe to Podcast…", pressing
Enter, and then typing or pasting in the feed address into the
dialogue window that comes up, and press (VO-Space) the "OK" button.

The podcasts will show up in iTunes under the "Podcasts" playlists.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: radio station programs

2010-03-30 Thread Brent Harding
I was wondering the same thing, really. There could be times when I might be
away from home, and the Mac is the portable I have if I'd want to take
something with. One option is to use Boot Camp and use Station Playlist like
I would in Windows. Another is to prepare the show in Windows, record it,
and bring it as one large mp3 and use Nicecast and Itunes to play it out. My
ideal option would be to record ahead of time in that case and have some
utility Crontab could run to stream the file out. I don't know that netcat
or wget can do it as I'm sure there's more than just sending the file at a
shoutcast server.

The problem I see with Nicecast, doing it any other way than prerecorded is
the fact of muting and unmuting the mic, you have to use this Voiceover
effect in the effects panel which isn't so accessible, not sure a global
hotkey can be made to toggle it as needed. some other project that looks
interesting is called Radiologik. I think that one could still use Rosetta
though as it may be PPC code last I knew.

I think he could be looking at how to broadcast one on the Mac. I heard of
Nicecast, but in order to talk on the show you have to use the effects
panel, I think, to engage the voiceover effect to take the mic off mute. How
to control that from within the Itunes window sounds hard. I think
originating the broadcast is best left to a Windows box unless I'm missing
something.

At the moment, you can't navigate the headings like you can in Safari, because
the text is just text and not HTML. In the "Format" menu, under the Paragraphs

text not actual HTML elements.

The TOC is an abbreviation for Table ofContents.

You might want to E-Mail: supp...@nisus.com to ask them if they can do
something to allow VO to navigate headings and TOcs. If you've got any more

Re: toast?

2010-03-30 Thread Esther

Hello Clarence and Chris,

You should be able to both read and convert .toast files with Disk
Utility. I'm not sure what is meant by "extracting" from .toast files
here, but I gather that you don't have Toast on your Mac. If you want
to change your files over to a more standard format for Macs, such as
a disk image, you would open them with Disk Utility. Then you would
select the file in the "Selected Disks" table (e.g., VO-Right arrow to
this, interact, and then highlight your file). Choose the "Convert"
button in the Disk Utility title bar (Control-F5 to move to the title
bar, tab to the "Convert" button, VO-Space to press the button). In
the dialog window text box for "Save as:" type in the name of the file
with a .dmg extension. VO-Space on the pop up button to choose the
destination folder. All the regular Finder short cuts also work here
(e.g., Command-Shift-H for home; Command-Shift-D for Desktop, etc.),
so if you want your file to be saved in a location that isn't listed
in the pop up button alternatives, you can use Command-Shift-G ("Go to
Folder") and type in the path to any folder you want, e.g.:

/Users/clarence/Documents/mystuff

Other than that, Chris is correct in saying that the .toast format can
be similar to ISO.

Cheers,

Esther

.toast files are created by Toast, a commercial CD burning
application. Depending what is in there it might just be an ISO
file. If so you could try renaming it to .iso and burn it with the
Apple Disk Utility. Another forum said that LiquidCD will
burn .toast files.

http://www.maconnect.ch/index.php?page=liquidcd&lang=en

In either case, I don't think it's a file format that is designed
for distributing archived files. It's mean more as a file to feed a
burner. If the iso trick works you might be able to just mount it
via disk utility rather than burn it.

Oh, are there any free apps that will do it first of all. If not, I

assigning hotkeys to menu-items

2010-03-30 Thread William Windels
Hi all,
I would like to assign hotkeys to menu-items of programs.
I can do this in the item keyboard > hotkeys in system preferences..

e.g.: I want to assign the key F1 to the item "search interactive" , that's
available in the help-menu of all programs.

But, this seems not to work always:

with vo, I can't see where are capitals in the menu-items since they are always
underlined on the brailledisplay.
(This underlining is not a good option I think)
Perhaps, because of that, it's not working?

Also , F-keys are not allowed and items in services can't have a hotkey.

I think, it's a very good tool for blind users but it seems not to work good at
the moment.

What are your suggestions / comments?

Thanx in advance,
best rgards,
William

Thanks very much for your note, and to all; Windows and Windows screen
readers in regard to use with Bootcamp and / or virtual machines on the Mac,
are completely on-topic here as far as I'm concerned.

Now, having said this, Windows-only discussions and / or discussions purely
of Windows screenreaders are most definitely not on-topic here. I'd prefer us
not to get bogged down in Windows specifics if they have nothing to do with VMs
or Bootcamp running on your Mac, I.E. questions like, 'What's the windows
keystroke for getting to the Start Menu?' or 'How do I get Jaws or Windoweyes
to read from the top of the page?' would be off-topic if they have nothing to
do with HOw windows is running on your Mac.

I know it's a bit of a grey area, but I hope this makes sense. If not, rather
than email the list, please do write me privately at:

Why not just press Command Shift question mark? This is the default keystroke
for getting help on the Mac.

Re: logic 9 express

2010-03-30 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

No offense but, could you write a little more than 1 word? It would be nice to
have an idea of what your saying "no" to without reading more of the thread.
Plus the question was answered long ago so your 1 word answer is even more of a
waste since you didn't even give further insight or ad to the answer in any way.

Re: assigning hotkeys to menu-items

2010-03-30 Thread William Windels
Hi James,
thanx for your answer.
I know that this is the default key for the help but it's not the same as
search interactive.
With search interactive, the system will also search in the menu-items of the
current program
So, jou have direct results in a table and its a fast way to search and
activate menu-items.

Also, the function to link hotkeys to menu-items can be very useful in other
situations.
Someone told me that there are some bugs in the system to assign hotkeys to
menu-items.

I am courious in your experiences...

best regards,

Subscribing to podcasts in iTunes [was Re: Downloading MP3, thank you]

2010-03-30 Thread Esther

Hi Sarah,

I've always been able to use either method for subscribing to podcasts
in iTunes: (1) finding the podcast in the iTunes Store and subscribing
or (2) add the podcast feed in the Advanced menu of iTunes.
Admittedly, I don't use the second method as often now, since if I use
the iTunes Store podcasts pages I have a lot more options for
inspecting episodes and content, and even for providing a direct link
to a specific episode. I generally only use the Advanced menu to
subscribe when the podcast has no entry in the iTunes Store podcast
pages. For example, Serotek's podcast series is not at the iTunes
Store, so I use the feed to subscribe:

http://serotalk.com/feed

The usual problem people have with the "Subscribe to podcast" menu
option under the Advanced menu is that they may be using an address
that is not a feed. Entering:

http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml

works for Blind Cool Tech subscriptions, but entering the main BCT web
page address does not. Some podcast distributors change their feed
addresses. In that case, your entries for the podcast series will be
grouped under a second subscription with the same name. This happened
with the BBC Radio 4 "In Our Times" podcast a couple of years ago -- I
had the original podcast feed added from their web page, and it
stopped updating correctly and could not be fixed even by refreshing
the feed. So I had to switch my subscription as though I were
starting as a new subscriber at the iTunes Store.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

On Mar 30, 2010, at 4:14 AM, Esther wrote:

Hello Martin,

There are actually two issues you are experiencing in downloading
MP3 files, and one is specific to the design of the Blind Cool Tech
web pages: you first have to interact (VO+Shift+Down Arrow) with
the link entry before you can use either of the suggestions that
were made (e.g. bring up the context menu with VO+Shift+M and find
the option to download the linked item or to save it as a file, or
use the keyboard shortcut of Option+Enter to force downloading of
the file).

I usually access the Blind Cool Tech RSS feed at:
http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml
instead of using the main web page for this reason, and also
because the feed page is much faster to load as well as not having
the links embedded in elements so that you first have to interact
to access them. However, only the 40 latest episodes are listed on
the feed site, so you may need to go to the main BCT site for
earlier episodes. You can also subscribe to the Blind Cool Tech
podcasts in iTunes by navigating to the "Advanced" menu on the
iTunes menu bar (VO+Shift+M then press "A"), arrowing down to
"Subscribe to Podcast…", pressing Enter, and then typing or pasting
in the feed address into the dialogue window that comes up, and
press (VO-Space) the "OK" button.

The podcasts will show up in iTunes under the "Podcasts"
playlists. You'll need to select this in the sources table of
iTunes (after interacting), then navigate to the Songs table,
interact, and expand the list of podcasts with VO-Shift-Backslash.
Then you can start any episode playing by pressing enter on the
highlighted episode and pressing the space bar to pause/resume play.

HTH. Subscribing to a podcast is not usually so involved; they
still haven't fixed the bug in the Blind Cool Tech episodes listed
at the iTunes feed that cropped up a couple of years ago. You might
just be able to use the "Subscribe" button at the iTunes Store, but
the way I've outlined will work for sure.

Cheers,

Esther

Thank all those who responded to my query about downloading MP3

is nothing about saving target or anything similar. I have also
held down the option key and pressed enter while on the link for
the file I want to download. This merely downloads a html

Re: Subscribing to podcasts in iTunes [was Re: Downloading MP3, thank you]

2010-03-30 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Esther,
asking this out of curiosity?
We have a station here n Toronto who has just switched to providing their
podcasts only via itunes, as in the link looks for itnues on your computer
before even letting you consider getting the show, smiles.
It is frustrating as I was previously subscribed via e-mail, and I am not
an itunes user.
is there any way to break the cycle? to for example get someone to
subscribe me for the podcast at itunes, but not require itunes after that
is done, allowing me to use my own programs for playing podcasts?
The hint given is that itunes is for organizing only, even though I know you
can play things there too.

Hope my question makes sense,
Karen

On Tue, 30 Mar 2010, Esther wrote:

Hi Sarah,

I've always been able to use either method for subscribing to podcasts in
iTunes: (1) finding the podcast in the iTunes Store and subscribing or (2)
add the podcast feed in the Advanced menu of iTunes. Admittedly, I don't use
the second method as often now, since if I use the iTunes Store podcasts
pages I have a lot more options for inspecting episodes and content, and even
for providing a direct link to a specific episode. I generally only use the
Advanced menu to subscribe when the podcast has no entry in the iTunes Store
podcast pages. For example, Serotek's podcast series is not at the iTunes
Store, so I use the feed to subscribe:

http://serotalk.com/feed

The usual problem people have with the "Subscribe to podcast" menu option
under the Advanced menu is that they may be using an address that is not a
feed. Entering:

http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml

works for Blind Cool Tech subscriptions, but entering the main BCT web page
address does not. Some podcast distributors change their feed addresses. In
that case, your entries for the podcast series will be grouped under a second
subscription with the same name. This happened with the BBC Radio 4 "In Our
Times" podcast a couple of years ago -- I had the original podcast feed added
from their web page, and it stopped updating correctly and could not be fixed
even by refreshing the feed. So I had to switch my subscription as though I
were starting as a new subscriber at the iTunes Store.

DOM and Group Modes

2010-03-30 Thread Linda Adams
Hello list,

I've been away but am back to learning my way around my Macbook. I've
been trying to compare these 2 modes on some of my frequently used web
pages. As the Apple Guide stated, DOM seems most like browsing with
Windows. I am stumped over Group mode.

I was looking at my Facebook page and couldn't get a feel of Group mode
at all. Is it because Facebook doesn't lend itself to this mode or is
it my newness? Is there a better web page where I can get a feel of
Group mode?

Lastly, when I'm in group mode and it is set on Navigation, will single
flick down take me from one group to the next group? I'm a little lost
here.

Thanks in advance,
Linda

Alternate playback methods for podcast subscriptions [was Re: Subscribing to podcasts in iTunes [was Re: Downloading MP3, thank you]]

2010-03-30 Thread Esther

Hi Karen,

Are you using a different podcatcher for the podcasts? When you say
you were subscribed via e-mail do you meant that they e-mailed the
podcast as an attachment each time there was a new episode? Also, are
you playing these all on a Mac, or are you sharing with a Windows
machine?

If you have a Mac, then iTunes is on your system, and you can
certainly use it to subscribe to podcasts, and you can even subscribe
to them yourself, if you know the podcast feed. In most cases, this
is given as a link on the station's web page, and the feed address
might look like:

http://www.example.com/feed.xml

(It doesn't have to have the .xml extension, but that's the type of
file it is). Stations can actually provide you with a one-click link
to subscribe to podcasts in iTunes by changing the "http" prefix to
"itpc" (for "iTunes podcast"). Then, when you click on the link, or
copy it to your browser's address bar, you'll automatically be asked
whether you want to subscribe to this podcast in iTunes.

The answer to your main question is yes, you can use iTunes to
organize and automatically download podcasts, but then play them in
another music player. They'll be stored in a folder under your user
account:

"Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Podcasts"

under individual folders named for each podcast subscription. If your
Mac is new, and came loaded with iTunes 9, then the folder might be
named with "iTunes Media" instead of "iTunes Music":

"Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Podcasts"

You can then change the default app for opening your mp3 files (if you
haven't already done so) by selecting one of your podcasts a file in
Finder, then using "Get Info" (Command-I). Navigate in the Get Info
window to where you hear "Open with" then VO-Right arrow to the pop up
button, press it with VO-Space, and set it to the application you
want. If you VO-Right arrow from there, you'll hear "Use this
application to open all documents like this" followed by a "Change
all" button that you can press to change the default application used
to open the file. Close the Get Info window with Command-W when done.

Even if you don't change the default player app from "iTunes" to
another player, you can still play these podcasts without opening
iTunes by using QuickLook -- just press space bar on one of the
selected files and it will start playing. Press space bar again to
stop.

The only thing I'm not sure about is whether the subscription will
eventually stop adding episodes if none of the files ever gets played
in iTunes. There's a safeguard that keeps you from starting
subscriptions that you forget about and coming back some months later
to find that your disk has filled up!

Let me know if this is for iTunes on Windows. I'm also adding a
PostScript about another alternative if you want to play your music in
a file-based navigation way, but don't want to get into the details of
iTunes.

Cheers,

Esther

P.S. There's another easy way you can play your podcasts in iTunes but
not have to learn about navigating through iTunes if you only want to
use it for podcasts. You can place the folder that contains Podcasts
in the Dock. You'll have to navigate to the folder in the dock, and
then use the contextual menu (VO-Shift-M or Command-Down Arrow) to
change the view options to display as "Folder" instead of "Stack" and
to view as "List" or "Automatic" instead of "Fan", and each change
requires a separate instance of bringing up the menu to change the
checked option. Once you do that, you can navigate to this location
in the Dock (e.g. VO-D, then press "p o" to go to the "Podcasts"
folder), VO-Space to bring up an alphabetized menu list of the podcast
subscription folders in iTunes, Right arrow to the subfolders, and
arrow down (or type the first letters) of the episode you want. Press
enter to start the track playing in iTunes. Press space bar to stop
if you're in iTunes. If you want to switch apps (to have as little to
do with iTunes as possible), use Command-Tab to switch to a different
application while iTunes is playing. You can always use Fn+F8 (one of
the Mac's media keys on keyboards from the last 3 years) to play/pause
the track, Fn+F7 to rewind, Fn+F9 to fast forward, Fn+F10 to mute
sound, Fn+F11 to lower volume, and Fn+F12 to raise volume. The media
keys work for third party apps, too, and your application does not
have to be in the foreground for these keys to work. If you play
tracks this way, you can take advantage of the fact that podcasts you
subscribe to and play in iTunes will automatically "remember" the last
played position and resume playback from there. This does not happen
if you play the same tracks in another media player. Write back if
you want more details about how to do this.

Re: DOM and Group Modes

2010-03-30 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Linda, I wouldn't recommend using facebook to learn group mode. It's
roughly equivalent to trying to teaching yourself piano using a grade 12 royal
conservatory book. Facebook is ideal for group mode once you have the feel of
it, but it's definitely not a good primer.

Torrent trackers are particularly nice in group mode. Some well designed
shopping sights are good places to start. A particularly good one is eluding
me just at the moment.

Actually, I've just tried my Own website out in group mode, and if you want a
good idea what group mode does, that'll do. Visit
http://www.erik-burggraaf.com in dom mode first and read the home page. Then
switch to group mode and refresh the page and read again. Then have a look at
the equipment list in dom order and refresh it in group mode. Now that I also
come to think about it, http://www.tapetrader.com was another site where group
mode serves particularly well.

I'm sorry I don't know the answer to your question about trackpad commander. I
have had a hard time getting the feel of the thing myself.

I have an M-Audio ProjectMix hardware control surface with a Logic mode. Some
features normally not accessible, like track volume levels, track pan position,
and a few others can be operated with the help of the surface, but a lot is
still out. I don't know any way to connect softsynths or effects, for example.

Every version they release gets more accessible lets hope they see it through

Response to Vlingo - Voice App query [was Re: Vlingo on tthe Iphone]

2010-03-30 Thread Esther

Hi Ricardo and Graham,

I believe that Graham is in the U.K., so Dragon Dictation (still free
for the U.S. and Canada) is not an option for him, hence the possible
interest in Vlingo. I'll cc: this response to the viphone list. I
haven't used this app myself, but I can point you to a few recent
reviews -- one from TUAW and another from a U.K. web site. These, of
course, deal with the app as a whole, and not with the aspect of
VoiceOver accessibility. Since there was extensive discussion of how
Dragon Dictation worked and how best to use it with VoiceOver on the
viphone list, it's reasonable that someone looking at an app with
similar properties would ask if anyone had tried it, and how people
were able to use it.

Quick summary of the reviews is that Vlingo has nice potential
capabilities, but suffers considerably in comparison with Dragon
Dictation as to its voice recognition accuracy, and the potential
strong point of sending updates directly to Twitter or Facebook was
hampered by the need to copy and paste. Additional support features
are available as in-app purchase add-ons. The verdict was to try the
free version, forego the in-app purchases, and to monitor progress.
I'm not sure that this is yet a quality replacement for apps like
Dragon Dictation or Siri.

I'll paste in some relevant excerpts; the reviews contain fuller
descriptions of the Vlingo app's layout, so you can check the links to
read the full posts. The Vlingo URL is:
"Vlingo - Voice App" by Vlingo corporation (free with in-app add-on
purchases):

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/vlingo-voice-app/id297214191?mt=8

• TUAW: "Vlingo 2 adds more voice power to iPhone" March 4, 2010

• Know Your Mobile: "Vlingo review" (U.K. site) March 15, 2010

Excerpt from TUAW Vlingo 2 review:

You can search (Google, Yahoo, or Bing), find map items, dial your
contacts (with optional contact name upload to Vlingo's servers to
improve recognition) and update your Facebook or Twitter status. For
email or SMS, you have two in-app purchase options to extend the free
app's capabilities; it's $6.99 for either SMS or email action, $9.99
for both.
Vlingo has gotten a thorough UI overhaul in this new version, and it's
quite a bit easier to use than it was. The dictation button can be
used in hold-down or tap-to-talk mode, and the app can be set to
recognize speech on launch for maximum speed. You can specify what
action you want by speaking it: "Email Joey, Subject how about some
coffee, Message Got time to meet me at Starbucks? You're buying!" will
create and address an outgoing email for you, all in one step.

That one-stop-shopping for creating emails [to is definitely more
streamlined than Dragon's implementation, and it also exposes one of
Vlingo's handiest features: a record button in the confirmation/edit
screen for each of the destinations, allowing you to append or insert
new dictation where you need it. Important safety note: while Vlingo
isn't intended for use while driving or during other attention-
critical tasks, it's probably less distracting to speak a few
sentences than it is to type them.

Unfortunately, there are one or two drawbacks to the Vlingo fandango.
First, there isn't a raw 'notepad' mode, where you can simply dictate
text with the intention of copying it to another app. Of course, if
you have the $6.99 email module, you can use that for free text entry,
but in the free app there's no direct way to do it except by speaking
a Facebook update and then copying instead of sending it (which works
fine, by the way).

The second drawback is more consequential, and hopefully one that will
be fixed over time; the recognition simply isn't as good as Dragon's,
at least at the start (in one instance, it misheard "2.0" as "to
porno," which is certainly spicier). Vlingo's VP of Consumer Business,
Hadley Harris, told me that the app does learn and improve as you use
it, both for individual accuracy as it's corrected and globally as new
words are added to the back-end recognition engine.

The good news is, the base app is free, and it's worth a try to see if
it meets your needs as well or better than the Dragon suite, Siri or
any of the other voice apps. I'm not sure the email or SMS buy-ups are
as good a deal, but that will depend on your individual needs and
usage profile.

Excerpt from U.K. Know your Mobile Vlingo review:

There are a whole load of commands you can instruct Vlingo to do,
including find an address or business on Google Maps, search the
internet, dial a phone number, send an SMS or email.

The design is pretty basic, comprising of nothing but that Press &
Speak button and the help panel below.

RE: third pardy vst for garage band

2010-03-30 Thread Bryan Smart
I think that they're confused.

If you install Logic, that automatically includes installs all of the Jam
Packs. The Jam Packs are accessible from GB. So, installing Logic adds
instrument sounds to GB. You could get those same sounds by just purchasing and
installing the Jam Packs, though.

You do get some extra loops with Logic that aren't part of GB, I think.

I heard that some of the stuff from logic works with GB. I haven't confirmed
this for my self yet, but I have heard it from a couple people that you can get
some of the soft synths to work, you just can't edit any of them, just presets
can be used.

some sound weirdness in 10.6.3

2010-03-30 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
I've been at this for a day now, and there are some minor performance increases
as in when i select or deselect files or folders in finder, the right file or
folder name is being given an action, whether selected deselected or deleted.
This was a voice over specific bug.

I do have something odd here now, i don't know if its apple's deliberate change
for some reason or other, but my browsing link and loaded sounds now have a
latency tinge to them, as if someone flipped a spoon around a wine glass.

Anyone got that too? Its not anything daunthing per say, but i'm wondering if
its just my imagination or if apple is controlling us with progressive sound
scapes into economic slavery. Just joking on that last part. Loves this thing :)

A program for ripping dvd's to mp3

2010-03-30 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi all.

Which program is the most accessible for making dvd's into mp3. I have
thought of handbrake, but I can not really got it to work. I am
willing to pay for a program, if there is one, which is accessible
with voice over.

Best regards Annie.

Hello; let me know if you find one. I use handbreak, but I hate the
fact there is no way that I've found to rip directly to mp3's. after
handbreak is through, you have to run another program to convert mp4's
to mp3's. it works, and its free; but there has to be something
better. thanks and good luck, max

Latest iTunes

2010-03-30 Thread Scott Howell
Folks,

Has anyone had any issues with he latest iTunes? I installed the latest version
and have found that it constantly crashes when attempting to access the songs
table while VO is running. I tried repairing disk permissions with no success.
I have not found where iTunes hides the user plists etc. I will try a test
account to see if I get the same results, but I am curious if anyone has seen
this. Not sure if I can just replace the iTunes program with an older version,
but this so far isn't turning out to be such a great thing.

tnx,

Re: Latest iTunes

2010-03-30 Thread Scott Howell
Hmmm, well as long as I only use my radio stations playlist, I seem to be ok.
I'm afraid of trying to do any searches at this point since iTunes will likely
just crash. Seems to only be an issue when VO is running. I suspect just
copying a prior version over will not work very well. I so far have not found
where iTunes hides its configuration files. I looked at the crash report and
get the impression there is a problem with a configuration file. I can't verify
this yet and I may be missing the real cause from lack of knowledge of some
information in the crash log. Hopefully these issues will be fixed quickly or
at least we'll find a solution to our issues. :)

Re: A program for ripping dvd's to mp3

2010-03-30 Thread Darcy Burnard
Hi. The way I've been doing it requires a few steps, but it does work.
I've been using mac the ripper, to extract the vob files from dvd. If you
select a single title, it will rip that tile to one vob file. I then use mpeg
stream clip, which can pull the audio from the vob file, and save it as an aiff
file. At that point, I can encode it just like any other audio file.
I would just use handbrake, but I hear it is very slow. Plus, not sure if you
can just rip the audio.
If there's a better way to do this, I'd love to hear.
