Hi, Just to correct something. You can actually enable Mac native write and read support to NTFS partitions by enabling it through Terminal. No extra software is required to do this. However, if the disk is ever ejected, this permission will be reversed and you will have to enable it again. As long as you can actually see your bootcamp partition on the Mac, however, you'll be fine. It's a longer process, and I probably wouldn't recommend doing it if you are not comfortable using Terminal and command line interfaces. Also, if you have third-party drivers which will enable read/write support, it is recommended to uninstall them. I'm assuming you do not, though, but for anyone else who wants to attempt doing this. I'll paste in the link to the post I wrote to Macvisionaries a few months ago. It hasn't when your talking about the configuration / settings side of virtual box. But the menus are accessible. As is the content of the vm. I 'm using it at the moemtn for a windows 7 vm and its working really well. Except for a couple of screwed up things. Such as usb drives which I have to eject from the mac before accepting them in the Virtual box machine. If you do get the app, you'll start up in the (unspoken) text field for your Amazon login name. Type that in, press tab, then type in your password and press return. But the only thing that VoiceOver announces if you get this working is "Scroll Area", and no amount of interacting, navigating, etc. gives you anything else spoken. The problem in making an eBook reading application accessible to a screen-reader, particularly the content of the book, is that this would necessarily make the book content accessible to copying to another file. I find it frustrating, but can understand not making the book content accessible to VoiceOver. It would, however, be possible for Amazon to use the Apple Speech API to make the application self-voicing. Hello to all. I make sure I have the gmail server for smtp selected and I get that message int eh subject line why does it turn in to null and I have to select the smtp server by hand later? Yeah true but in the help manual of bootcamp it says you should be able to see the files and copy them to windows and get n to mac and copy them back which I can do. I can dopy my files from mac easily for free to windows using 2 tools I have in my arsenal but the help manual says to update bootcamp if I cannot see the partition and I can't update book camp as ms gives me an invalid signature and closes with a critical error. Have you made sure that GMIL knows to use the correct incoming address and that you have the correct radio button selected on the website for either POP or IMAP? It's a problem with gmail rather than Mail, specifically. Sometimes taking all accounts offline, restarting and taking all accounts online again solves this problem. still having difficulties with dates
I apologize for writing again about this issue. Is I am very frustrated trying to enter dates into address book for birth dates and anniversaries. Is this not really accessible, or do I have a voiceover setting set up in a way that is causing so much distress? I'll try to explain the issues. I can interact with the date field. I seem to be able to vo left and right arrow between month/day/year. Then I have tried typing in the info or using vo plus up and down arrows. Typing does not seem to work as according to a sighted person there is a text cursor that is not moving with the vo cursor. I do have vo set up so that it should be following the vo cursor but it won't follow. I can move that cursor without using the vo keys and using just the right and left arrows. However, there is no audio feedback at all and I do not know where it is but if I type where that cursor is then it will type in that spot. So, if I use vo plus up and down arrows to change the month/day/year then it will move it up once and announce December no matter what month is actually entered then the next time I use vo plus up arrow vo completely jumps out of the date field. It is incredibly frustrating. Is address book actually not accessible and should I use something else? Or am i just not aware of the proper way to get this to work? I also forgot to mention that I often have the need to alt plus tab to another program then alt plus shift tab back to address book to get vo to interact properly for a short bit with the date field. pages 09 : return or enter
Hi all, I have a strange problem with pages: I was reading the manual of pages with the hotkeys to look for the command to take a new page. I found the command: command+enter to take a new page. Unfortunately, when I was in the textfield, this command was not possible at that moment (I hear a sound of vo). I was looking further in the manual with the hotkeys and I saw somteimes return and sometimes enter. Whats the difference between them? After this strange experience, I was looking in the help and there was written "pages 09". But, when I was looking in the section about in the menu-item pages, I saw the following: Pages 08 version 4.0.3 (766). This seems to be a contradiction? So, what is the hotkey for taking a new page and , if it's important, what's the diffference between a enter and a return? Enter is not the same key as return. It often times does the same thing while editing text but for commands they are treated differently. On a full-size keyboard Enter is the bottom right on your numeric keypad. On My laptop it is the button to the right of the command key to the right of the space bar, or to the left of the left arrow key. So if Option-Enter makes a new page you need to make sure you're using Enter and not Return. Historically Return was mapped to the carriage return (CR) character while Enter was mapped to a linefeed (LF) character. Macs generally used CR as it's end of line character in text while Unix used LF and DOS/Windows required both. Yay standards! So back in the day before editors hid the nuances the different camps would complain about each other when they tried to move text files across platforms. So, what is the hotkey for taking a new page and , if it's important, what's the diffference between a enter and a return? Hi Christina, OK, I misunderstood your question and assumed that, when you were speaking of birthday fields, you were speaking about iCal. I now understand that you're referring to Address Book instead. OK, this is a complicated explanation. I'll try to make it as clear as I can. Sit back and enjoy the bumpy ride… Address Book definitely has a bug in that VoiceOver often doesn't echo typing and deletion of characters within a field. One has to type without feedback and move away and back to double check the input. When editing a birthday field, first, make sure you're actually editing the card rather than browsing the contact's scroll area and simply interacting with the card's information. Again, I must stress the difference. Command'l is the shortcut for editing a card. Now, assuming you've already added the birthday field, navigate to the field and interact with it. Make a mental note of the month. If I'm not mistaken, by default, the active field will be the month and the date will say December 31, 2000. In this case, use only your up or down arrow key to change the value. The up arrow will move the month forward like from december to January and the down arrow will move it back like from December to November, for example. Now, remember, you probably won't get any feedback. You'll probably hear the year but don't assume that the active keyboard focus is on the year field. When you've changed the month to what you think is correct, use only the right arrow key to go to the day field and then use only the up or down key to set the day. Repeat this for the year as well. Alternatively, you can try simply typing the value and not use the arrow keys. Sometimes that seems to work well but you might find yourself typing the wrong thing in the wrong field. To check your entry, don't stop interacting or that will throw you out of the scroll area. Instead, simply use Control-Option-left arrow to move left and then use Control-Option-right arrow to read the date field. Now, an important thing to remember is that, once you've interacted with the date field and have changed values and subsequently used VO-left arrow to move away and back to check the date, when you once again interact, you'll be on the last field you edited and not necessarily the month field like you were in when you first interacted at the outset. Does that make sense? In other words, you interacted the first time and the focus was on the month. You used the arrow keys to set the month, the right arrow key to move to day, the up and down arrows (or just typing) to set the day, right arrow to move to the year and set the year with what ever method you chose. Then you pressed VO-left arrow to move away and then VO-right arrow to move back. Let's say you needed to adjust the day field. When you again interact with the date field you'll be on the year because that's where you were the last time you interacted and that's where the keyboard focus is. So you now have to use the left arrow key to move back to the day field. Hopefully that explains the initial concept. Now, if you use other keys to navigate, like Tab, all bets are off on its behavior. I'd assume that if you actually tabbed to an edit field, VoiceOver's keyboard focus would leave the date field and upon tabbing back to it, the month would be the first focused field. Anyway, that's an assumption, I already stated. So, long story, it's not really easily accessible and it sounds complicated but, once you're used to the process, it's certainly doable. Yeah mail set it up and it happens at random it is like it is forgetting my settings every once in a while. I have gmail set up correctly as I can view everything. it just happens at random. it is hard to explain. I appreciate your explanation and I'm relieved to know I don't seem to be doing anything "wrong". It's just a lot of work. Christina, Remember, in Address Book, don't use Control-Option-up or down arrow. That's only for iCal. Again, in Address Book, just use the up and down arrow keys by themselves once you've interacted. Follow the instructions carefully. Hello Chris, Thanx for your answer but I don't understand well I think. I use a macbook so, I haven't a full-sized keyboard, like you I think. The enter key on that keyboard is on the right side of the keyboard , above the right shift-key. It's a long key that's oriented vertically. So, if this is the enter-key, what's the return key? But the menus are accessible. As is the content of the vm. I 'm using it at the moemtn for a windows 7 vm and its working really well. Except for a couple of screwed up things. Such as usb drives which I have to eject from the mac before accepting them in the Virtual box machine. Hello William,
Let me try to expand on Chris' answer about differences between the
"Enter" key and the "Return" key. On older Mac laptops, such as my
PowerBook G4, there is a separate "Enter" key located along the bottom
row of keys where the right "Option" key is located on your MacBook --
just to the left of the arrow keys and to the right of the "Command"
key that is beside the space bar, as Chris described. The "Return"
key is located at the far right of the keyboard, and is the long key
just above the "Shift" key, as you described. In Windows parlance,
this key is always referred to as "Enter". The two keys generate
difference command sequences, although some programs will allow you to
press either key for the same functionality. As an example of how
these keys can behave differently, in iTunes, if your cursor is
highlighting a track in the "Songs" table and you press "Return", the
selected track will start playing. If you press the "Enter" key under
the same conditions, you are placed in insert mode so that you can
type in a new name for the track. Again, this behavior is only
evident on a keyboard that has a separate "Enter" key; current MacBook
keyboards don't have an "Enter" key. I think that you can generate the
same key command sequence as the "Enter" key if you hold down the "Fn"
key and the same time you press the "Return", but I'm not certain of
that. I am able to check that when I turn on VoiceOver keyboard
practice mode (VO-K) that holding down the "Fn" key and pressing
"Return" produces "Enter", just as pressing the "Enter" key on my
PowerBook does, while just pressing the "Return" key without holding
down the "Fn" key produces "Return" in this mode. (Don't forget to
press the "Escape" key to exit keyboard practice mode.) Also,
pressing Fn+Return on a selected song in the iTunes songs table gives
the same behavior I find on my PowerBook with the "Enter" key, and
that's different from the "Return" key.
In some word processing programs the two keys are distinguished as
indicating a line break ("Return") or a page break ("Enter").
Historically, this is because there were different terminal
conventions for relaying data. Terminals with character mode entry
(DEC VT100, I think) used the "Return" key to indicate the end of data
entry. Page mode terminals (IBM 3270) used the "Enter" key to send
off data when all the fields in a form had been filled in. (I hope
I've gotten that right, since this is only based on reading.)
Hope this helps to clarify that there are differences between "Return"
and "Enter" keys. I can't answer whether Pages 09 is using different
command sequences for "Return" and "Enter" in general, though. Over
the last couple of years, with the flood of Windows users on the list,
I've tended to use "Enter" in some instances where I always used to
type "Return" in my descriptions. They are, actually, different keys.

Enter is not the same key as return. It often times does the same
thing while editing text but for commands they are treated
differently. On a full-size keyboard Enter is the bottom right on
your numeric keypad. On My laptop it is the button to the right of

Thanks so much. I got it to work now thanks to you. If I don't use the vo keys, per your instructions, to change the date, then it works great. While in the month field I get zero feedback but while in the day or year areas I do get feedback from voiceover. That is much more workable then the way I was trying to do this before your help.
