Some of the fields in the setup are not labeled and I get confused on what I'm
supposed to enter in what field.
I need to know the order of the fields.
Thanks.

Re: TextExpander app on sale for $1.99

2010-02-15 Thread Esther

Hi Mike,

I'm cc'ing this to the Macvisionaries list, since your question
involves the desktop version of TextExpander as well as definitions
that can sync through its iPhone/iPod counterpart TextExpander Touch
app.

The predefined snippets for the desktop version of TextExpander for
the Mac are described on this page:

http://smileonmymac.com/TextExpander/snippets.html
However, as they describe, although you can download the .zip files
from that web page, the easy way to add them is to use the
TextExpander preferences pane. Just launch the TextExpander
preferences pane (either VO-M , arrow down, and press "s y" to go to
"System Preferences" and use Shift-Tab to navigate to TextExpander and
VO-Space to open, or, you can just use Spotlight to type in the first
letters of "TextExpander" and arrow down to the
"TextExpander.prefPane" and press return). On the "Snippets" tab
navigate to the table of Snippets, then VO-Down arrow to the "Menu
Button" and press it (VO-Space). The last menu option will be "Add
Predefined Group". Right arrow to the submenu and select the group
you want to add (e.g, "HTML Code Snippets"). Close the TextExpander
preferences pane with Command-W when you're done. Another option you
might want to take a look at is their "Internet Productivity Snippets"
which contain snippets for URL shortening services. (Some of these
more recent options aren't listed on the web page links, but are
available through the menu button of the preference pane, so it's
easier to add predefined groups through the menu button.)

There's also a SmileOnMyMac blog, where they've posted hints about
using TextExpander with DropBox and other such items. Just select the
link to their blog on any of their product web pages to read up on
these entries. You can also add predefined snippets through the "Add"
button in the bottom left corner on your page of Snippets groups on
the iPhone app. However, I can't imagine creating most of my web
pages by typing new entries from scratch on the iPhone! It would be
slick if they incorporated TextExpander with apps for blogging like
the free WordPress app. For general purposes of typing with
TextExpander snippets on my iPod Touch, I like the SimpleNote app, and
I now use the free Notational Velocity program for desktop autosyncing
of SimpleNote notes on the Mac in preference over the JustNotes beta.
(VoiceOver navigation feels very stable with NV.) I don't know what
happens on the iPhone when a call comes in when you're typing into an
app, but I think the fact that you can easily save and sync to the web
site version of SimpleNote means that it's easy to save your work.
Then you can use cut and paste to move content to other apps.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Hi Robert, Mike, and Others,

Yes, as Mike says, TextExpander for the Mac is VoiceOver friendly.
(And oddly enough, although I was away when this post came in, the

for the desktop app, along with an account of excellent customer

This offer is good through February 28, 2010.

Here's some more background. I'll cc this post to the

TextExpander Touch app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Like the TextExpander Touch app, the original (Mac only)
TextExpander software lets you define shortcut "snippets" that
expand to phrases like Mike's signature line. Since you can access
and create snippets by bringing up the TextExpander preferences
pane, you get the features that show up when the icon is accessed
from the status menu bar (which can be a potential problem for
VoiceOver for some apps).

Snow Leopard on the Mac allows you to define keyboard shortcuts
that expand into larger phrases, but they only work in a subset of
applications while TextExpander's snippets are system wide. (To be
fair, these are probably the applications you are most likely to
use). The TextExpander snippets are more sophisticated: you can
use their sample snippets to expand to the current date or time in
a format of your choosing. If you are a web page designer you can
used the pre-defined samples to expand HTML elements aroun

RE: Fix for Sound Related Slowness on MBP

2010-02-15 Thread Bryan Smart
My MBP was purchased in September of last year, and the update says that it
isn't for this Mac.

I have noticed some occasional glitches with the audio on my MBP, though they
aren't major. Very rarely, VoiceOver will chop off a tiny bit of the speech
when it first starts speaking. Haven't figured out why.

Also, if I haven't pressed a key for a while (more than a minute), there will
be a lag of about a second or more, after a keypress, before VoiceOver starts
speaking. I think that this problem, though, is related to the energy saver
features for the sound device. It is supposed to shut down if not used for a
while in order to save power. I seem to remember seeing a way to turn that off,
but I don't know how much power/time it would cost me to turn that off.

RE: Fix for Sound Related Slowness on MBP

2010-02-15 Thread Bryan Smart
If you really mean that the VMs run slowly, then you haven't given them enough
memory. It doesn't matter what you've heard about what is possible, XP won't
run right in a VM with less than 512MB, and it needs 1GB if you want it to run
as well as possible. For Windows 7, 1.5GB is the minimum for good performance,
and 2GB is recommended.

The sound in VMware will lag. VMware uses a buffer to prevent glitches in the
audio. This means that you have increased latency between when you press a key
(such as a screen reader key), and when you hear the speech. The lag isn't
long, but you certainly can notice it.

You can reduce the buffer. First, power off the VM (must be shut down, and
suspended doesn't count). Find the virtual machine (the blah.vmware) file,
press vo-shift-m, and select show package contents. In there, find the blah.vmx
file. Press vo-shift-m again, and select open with, other. On this screen,
select TextEdit. You need to add the following line at the bottom of the file.

pciSound.playBuffer = "25"

Restart your VM, and most all of the latency will be gone. However, you might
hear an occasional pop or crackle in the audio. Too bad, that is the tradeoff.

that's why we are making Office for Mac 2011 the best, most compatible
productivity suite on the Mac," says Eric Wilfrid, MacBU General Manager at
Microsoft.

More detailed features for the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 include:

list of 5 items
* Entourage goes, here comes Outlook - hated Entourage or the web-based version
of Outlook, now you're finally getting Outlook for Mac * .PTS support - allows
users to back up and open their emails outside their mail client and brings
permission settings for the first time * Co-authoring - allows you and your
co-workers to edit Word, PowerPoint or Excel files at the same time, regardless
of time, geography or platform * Office Web Apps - lighter versions of the
desktop counterparts, you'll be able to get your work done as long as you have
a machine connected to the Internet * The "Ribbon" UI - new user interface with
an unique Mac-like feel, a perfect mix between the Office 2008 Elements
Gallery, the classic Mac menu and Standard Toolbar Everett

Re: TextExpander app on sale for $1.99

2010-02-15 Thread Esther

Hi Mike,

I think you're asking about Tweetie 2 accessibility with TextExpander,
but it's more likely that you'll find list member who are using
Twittelator Pro. Twittelator Pro added support for TextExpander last
month. (Twittelator Pro seems to have the intention of adding
absolutely everything it can to its features ). I'm not using
Twittelator Pro, since quite a lot of its supported features seem
geared to iPhone only usage, and I have an iPod Touch. I thought that
Tweetie 2 was inaccessible until I listened to Justin Romack's
description in the Screenless Switchers podcast that discussed/
evaluated the performance of about 9 different Twitter clients and
Boxcar at the end of October. I think this is the last podcast they
did. Anyway, Justin's demo of Tweetie 2 is about an hour into the
program, after the discussion of Echofon. I'm probably not a good
person to ask about Twitter clients. If you're interested in Tweetie
2, listen to his demo of how to use it in that podcast. There are
fairly detailed explanations and demonstrations, and you can follow
along. The only error I found in his program account was the URL
address he gave to the Help for Tweetie, where he announced a slash
instead of a hyphen between "tweetie" and "iphone"; the correct URL
address is:

http://help.atebits.com/tweetie-iphone/
You can read this and see what you think. You need to use the pass-
thru gesture for some of the features, so listen to the podcast.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Mike,

I'm cc'ing this to the Macvisionaries list, since your question
involves the desktop version of TextExpander as well as definitions
that can sync through its iPhone/iPod counterpart TextExpander
Touch app.

Just launch the TextExpander
preferences pane (either VO-M , arrow down, and press "s y" to go
to "System Preferences" and use Shift-Tab to navigate to
TextExpander and VO-Space to open, or, you can just use Spotlight
to type in the first letters of "TextExpander" and arrow down to
the "TextExpander.prefPane" and press return). On the "Snippets"
tab navigate to the table of Snippets, then VO-Down arrow to the
"Menu Button" and press it (VO-Space). The last menu option will
be "Add Predefined Group". Right arrow to the submenu and select
the group you want to add (e.g, "HTML Code Snippets"). Close the
TextExpander preferences pane with Command-W when you're done.
Another option you might want to take a look at is their "Internet
Productivity Snippets" which contain snippets for URL shortening
services. (Some of these more recent options aren't listed on the
web page links, but are available through the menu button of the
preference pane, so it's easier to add predefined groups through
the menu button.)

There's also a SmileOnMyMac blog, where they've posted hints about
using TextExpander with DropBox and other such items. Just select
the link to their blog on any of their product web pages to read up
on these entries. You can also add predefined snippets through the
"Add" button in the bottom left corner on your page of Snippets
groups on the iPhone app. However, I can't imagine creating most
of my web pages by typing new entries from scratch on the iPhone!
It would be slick if they incorporated TextExpander with apps for
blogging like the free WordPress app. For general purposes of
typing with TextExpander snippets on my iPod Touch, I like the
SimpleNote app, and I now use the free Notational Velocity program
for desktop autosyncing of SimpleNote notes on the Mac in
preference over the JustNotes beta. (VoiceOver navigation feels
very stable with NV.) I don't know what happens on the iPhone when
a call comes in when you're typing into an app, but I think the
fact that you can easily save and sync to the web site version of
SimpleNote means that it's easy to save your work. Then you can
use cut and paste to move content to other apps.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

Ipod Touch with wireless

2010-02-15 Thread carlene knight
 Hi:

I hope this isn't too off topic, but I wondered if anybody else is having
trouble with their IPod Touch regarding wireless? I used to be able to use my
Touch for hours wirelessly, but now it stops every 20 minutes or so. It's done
it on Pandora with a subscription, AOL Radio and IBlink Radio. My husband's
IPhone has no issues, and neither do our computers on the rare occasion we use
it for them. Sometimes it asks me to choose a network, and sometimes it
doesn't. seems as though the problem is better when I turn VO off. I've
listened to Pandora for about 45 minutes with VO off. Does anybody else have
this issue? Do I need to get my IPod looked at? Thanks. Any suggestions as
to how to fix this problem or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: files with .sit extension

2010-02-15 Thread Esther

Hi Mary,

The .sit files are an old Mac format called Stuffit files. I'm a bit
puzzled as to why the disk image file comes with this extension, but
you can open these files with "The Unarchiver":

http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html

This will handle nearly all the file extension types that are not
already handled by default on the Mac, including Stuffit files. For
some reason, a few files that open perfectly well when you use the
terminal in command line do not automatically open through the GUI
(like Bookshare downloads). "The Unarchiver" will take care of those
files, too.

HTH. By the way, I think you asked about the freeware OnyX
maintenance software a few days ago. This is an excellent alternative
to Cocktail.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: files with .sit extension

2010-02-15 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Esther, for your response to my .sit file extension query. The program
is a simple maintenance utility called macjanitor that is suppose to enable you
to run the scheduled maintenance task for the unix that that is the guts of
os10 as I understand it. If you leave your Mac off at night, these scripts
don't get run, and this little program is suppose to let you run them.

And for whatever reason, it does have that .sit extension.

How do I compile as 32-bit instead of 64-bit in Snow Leopard?

2010-02-15 Thread Doug Lee
I use a Python library called Skype4Py that appears to work only
in 32-bit environments, probably because Skype for Mac is a 32-bit
application. This worked fine on Leopard, but when I upgraded to
Snow Leopard, the stock Python installation became a 64-bit one
apparently. I could still run my utility using a 32-bit Python
port, but then my ports started going to pieces because I didn't
rebuild them all, as one is supposed to do. I then rebuilt them
all, and my Python became a 64-bit version there as well.

So now I can't run my utility at all, because Skype4Py causes a
Segmentation Violation pretty quick.

So the question: How do I deliberately build a 32-bit version of
Python on here? I see no variant for it in the Python MacPort, unless
"universal" does that.

In case it helps, I know Skype4Py uses Carbon for its Skype API
connection. I should have the right Carbon (I installed it from
the Snow Leopard CD), though I forget the version number at the
moment.

Thanks much for any help.
