Hi Mary,
The .sit files are an old Mac format called Stuffit files. I'm a bit
puzzled as to why the disk image file comes with this extension, but
you can open these files with "The Unarchiver":
http://wakaba.c3.cx/s/apps/unarchiver.html
This will handle nearly all the file extension types that are not
already handled by default on the Mac, including Stuffit files. For
some reason, a few files that open perfectly well when you use the
terminal in command line do not automatically open through the GUI
(like Bookshare downloads). "The Unarchiver" will take care of those
files, too.
HTH. By the way, I think you asked about the freeware OnyX
maintenance software a few days ago. This is an excellent alternative
to Cocktail.
Cheers,
Esther

What application do I need to get that will open a file with a .sit
prefix? I downloaded a free program called Macjanitor but it is a
dmg with this added suffix, and my Mac mini wants to open this with
text edit, clearly not the appropriate app for this task.
