I think you need to download the Audible Manager software for the Mac for items
to be imported in iTunes automatically. I know that's the case on the PC.

Re: downloading audible books into Itunes

2010-02-04 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Matt,
According to what I read on audible's site, there is no audible manager
software for the Mac, separate from Itunes. I've been using audible manager on
the pc for a long time, so when I got the Mac, I checked out what Audible had
to say and they don't seem to have any separate software. So for now, I just
let the stuff go into downloads and import from there. An unnecessary 2-step
process, but that seems to be what one needs to do, unless you want to
immediately start reading what you're downloading and set Safari's download
manager to have files automatically open upon download.

Re: downloading audible books into Itunes

2010-02-04 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Robert,
Do you have Safari set so trusted files automatically open once downloaded?
That could certainly account for their automatic entry into Itunes. If you
don't have that set, then its a great mystery to me what the difference could
be. Perhaps there was some little glitch when I activated my account. Books
read fine, though.

Re: working with docx files on a Mac

I've not found a good text editor that handles tables well. I can navigate

has the actual text I want such as

TableTitle:A3

which is the name of the table and my cursor is in the first column and the
third row. Only workaround I could come up with was to set a VO hot spot on the
chrome with VM-Shift-Number (usually number 1) and then set VO to announce
changes in the hotspot with VO-command-shift-number (usually number 1). Of
course to set that up I need to first get into a table because otherwise that
location in the chrome is simply read as 'blank text'. So the process is to
navigate somewhere in a table, stop interacting with scroll area, VO down once
and right until I get to the spot with the table name row:header (VO-right 7
times), set the hotspot, then return back to the content area. From then on VO
will announce the columns and rows as I move around the table. Not great, but
it kinda works.

Mary Otten wrote:

Thanks, James, for that speedy reply. I have not yet bought any application for word processing hoping to benefit from others' experiences and just get one app that will do the job. I don't mind tables on the Windows side in Word with Window Eyes or Jaws. But prior to the implementation of good support for them by the screen reader vendors, they were indeed horrible, so I sympathize with your frustration with trying to use tables without good accessibility support.

Re: a couple of Safari questions--bookmarks top sites and tool bars

2010-02-04 Thread Chris Blouch
Another handy bit is that any bookmarks you store in the bookmarks bar
can be fired up just by hitting command-# where the number is the order
which the bookmark is in the bar list. So my most commonly used sites
are in the bookmark bar slots 1-5. To get to the first item at any time
in Safari I just hit command-1 and I'm there.

components of Safari for several months now, but I can't seem to make much
headway. Is top sites only meant to be a temporary list of the most recently
visited sites, or does it actually store bookmarks permanently? I was under
the impression that I could store my bookmarks there permanently, but often,
when I try to find a specific bookmark, it isn't in that list.
In regards to the actual bookmarks section of the browser, I have never been
successful opening the bookmarks that I have saved there. I have tried VO
space, clicking with VO Shift space and double clicking. I think I have even
searched in vain for a contextual menu. Therefore, I resorted to saving
everything in top sites, but now, even this doesn't seem to be working well.

Concerning the tool bars, if I know that there is a tool bark at the top of a web page or in

a particular program, is there a shortcut or VO command that will take me to
the tool bar from anywhere in the program or on the web page?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: apple and adobe zeitgeist fallout

2010-02-04 Thread James
Well I can do this without using the accessibility settings in Adobe
Reader and I am not building a screen reader, I can make standard PDF
files accessible so all you need is a free screen reader to read and
interact with the content. It also works with JAWS, Window Eyes and
Zoom Text. I do not change the default settings of Adobe Reader so
the content is read.

It works with Foxit but you get a bunch of formatting information as
you move through the document.
With adobe reader it is smooth and you only get the content.

Hi all.
I'm subscribed to "Mac OS X hints" RSS feed and today they posted a great hint
that is helpful for deleting radio streams you no longer listen to.
I found that when I created a smart playlist of all the streams I imported I
couldn't delete any of them from the library from there. So after that step,
Carry out what they say on this page and you should find it easier to remove
them.

Note, the page has no headings but there's an auto webspot at the start of the
article.

Hope this helps,

It is entitled "Justice Department Settles Kindle On-Campus Cases,"
It is by Associated Press. It ran in the Wall Street Journal on January 18,

Amazon.com re the Kindle's lack of accessibility.

I could send you the braille copy if you can't find it on line and are

Thanks to everyone that has responded so far to my post.
For those people who suggest that we just scan our books, call me a breaker
of the old tradition, but scanners are just not practical anymore. More and
more books are going to be on the electronic internet, and I think that a good
start is for us to get a following. We should post about this issue on blogs,
twitter, and anywhere people will listen to us.
I appreciate those that feel I have a valid complaint, and I think that all
of us who really care about this should contact the publishers to discuss this
with them.
I completely forgot about other print-disabled people sharing my concerns,
but that just makes my case all the stronger.

  Subject: A call to action!

  First, a question.
How many people like to read books? I know I do. How many people were
overjoyed that entire text books were going to be put online? I was. However, a
lot of EBooks cannot be read by any screen reader we have today. Why? Simply
put, the text of the book is contained within an OCR image, and there is a
special reader required to read them. These are not your standard PDF files,
and the books are protected by DRM, so there is no way to extract the contents
into programs like text edit.
As a book worm, I tried out the Kindle app for the IPhone, and was
delighted to find that a book that I wanted to read was available on the Kindle
store. However, my joy turned to bitter disappointment when I realized that
while I could navigate the book's table of contents, cover, and chapters to an
extent, the text was completely inaccessible. Furthermore, my text books for my
classes were not usable. Ladies and gentlemen, I fear that unless we as blind
consumers stand up, and demand that these publishers put their text books into
standard native file formats, such as pdf or doc, we will lose a lot of access
to books, and our chances to succeed at college will be severely diminished.
So, anyone have any thoughts of what to do?
I thought about starting a petition to ask Amazon to require their
publishers to make their books usable, but figured that I would be a laughing
stock for doing so, as most publishers probably wouldn't have the time to read,
much less consider what I was asking for.
My point is, as long as E texts get more and more graphical, our chances
to read will be greatly impaired, and as more and more books become exclusively
online, we will lose access to the latest editions of books altogether.
Thoughts, anyone?

Re: downloading audible books into Itunes

2010-02-04 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Robert,
Yes, I am quite sure that books don't show up in my itunes library after
download. I checked the audio books section after downloading and found
nothing. Importing them makes them show up there. And prior to that, they are
in the download folder, where I would expect downloads to go normally. I guess
this will remain a mystery unless Audible can shed some light on it.

Re: downloading audible books into Itunes

2010-02-04 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

It has never imported into my audiobook section automatically without the open
downloads box being checked in Safari. I'm going to take a wild shot in the
dark but, could it be related to the drive in which you have your iTunes media
folder? My iTunes content is save on an external drive. What about you guys?

RE: a couple of Safari questions--bookmarks top sites and tool bars

2010-02-04 Thread Linda Adams
Chris,
I've used this method and it is quite nice. I have a question. if I add
another web page to the bookmark bar, will it take the first position
and move the others down a number? If so, is there a way I can
reposition the bookmarks so the one I use the most keeps the short cut
command 1?

Thanks,

Another handy bit is that any bookmarks you store in the bookmarks bar
can be fired up just by hitting command-# where the number is the order
which the bookmark is in the bar list. So my most commonly used sites
are in the bookmark bar slots 1-5. To get to the first item at any time
in Safari I just hit command-1 and I'm there.

both of these two components of Safari for several months now, but I
can't seem to make much headway. Is top sites only meant to be a
temporary list of the most recently visited sites, or does it actually
store bookmarks permanently? I was under the impression that I could
store my bookmarks there permanently, but often, when I try to find a
specific bookmark, it isn't in that list.

In regards to the actual bookmarks section of the browser, I have never
been successful opening the bookmarks that I have saved there. I have
tried VO space, clicking with VO Shift space and double clicking. I
think I have even searched in vain for a contextual menu. Therefore, I

Concerning the tool bars, if I know that there is a tool bark at the top

My itunes library is not saving to an external drive, although given the amount

I still haven't had success. My question deals with web pages and I
have a Mac Book 10.6

When I began working on this, , like Nic says, I could advance through a
web page with just pressing the down arrow but it would completely skip
paragraphs when I did that. Pressing VO and down arrow did nothing
beside sounding a beep. When I used the right or left arrows, it moved
through the text without skipping anything but read a whole paragraph at
a time. When I got to the beginning of a paragraph, I could interact
with the text but I could only go word by word through the paragraph
using VO right/left arrows.  .

Then, as suggested by Anne, I tried using quick nav for the first time
and things got really strange. I understood that pressing the right and
left arrows together will turn it on and off as a toggle. this has not
been the case. Sometimes it toggles and sometimes it doesn't. Should I
hold the keys or should it be a quick simultaneous press? At one point,
it appeared to have turned on and I was, in fact, able to read through a
paragraph a line at a time. Replicating this has not been easy. And
after playing with the quick nav, I can no longer go through the web
page with just the right and left arrows without pressing the VO keys.
I guess I changed something but I don't know what I did.
The tracking is still on.

All suggestions are welcomed.

Linda

Hi,

Apple made it possible in 10.6 to read by using only the arrow keys on
websites. However, it seems like a really flaky solution, and doesn't
seem to work all of the time.

editing playlists in Itunes

2010-02-04 Thread Mary Otten
Is there a way to add to an existing playlist that is not a smart play list? I
just made a play list that has all the songs I've bought from the itunes store
in the jazz genre. I'd like to add to that if and when I buy more songs in this
same genre. My first idea was to use a smart play list, but having failed at
making one that didn't have some problem, I decided to just select all the
stuff I had and make list from selection. That's fine until I get more songs. I
have read the help topic on smart playlists and the one on playlists but am
definitely not understanding that dialogue that comes up when you want to make
a smart play list.

Yup,

To add songs to and existing regular playlist find the song or songs you want
to add, interact with the playlist, press VO shift M to bring up the context
menu. In the context menu, arrow down to "add songs to playlist". Open this
sub menu then press enter on the playlist you want to add to.

2010-02-04 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Ricardo. I went about it backwards. I went to the playlist and brought
up the context menu looking for an add to play list choice but didn't find
one.But I experimented with selecting songs and then doing the context menu and
it is as you described it, add to playlist is there with the submenu listing
all my playlists.

Re: Additional help needed with Reading line by line

2010-02-04 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi Linda,

As I pointed out, it's not a complete solution. It can still be improved, so
it's certainly not the preferred method of navigation just yet. You might as
well get used to how VoiceOver handles things as opposed to Windows screen
readers until it improves somewhat. :)
