Re: accessible bit torrent client
I've tried transmittion bitrocket and utorrent. Transmition has the features I want but the main torrent list is broken with VO. that makes it really annoying once you get up past the 50 torrent mark or so. Bitrocket hangs on torrent generation for me and doesn't have some features I want such as the ability to select individual files and prooritize or exclude them. It is really accessible but is not being developed anymore. Utorrent is wonderful and I'd use it absolutely, but the feature set is nowhere near comperable to the windows version. There isn't a torrent generater at all which is a show stopper for me. I keep my eye on it every three months or so because as soon as they build in a torrent creater I'm there. Right now I'm using transmition even though I'm up to about 50 torrents and the list not reading is getting a bit rediculous because that is the only client I've found to successfully generate a torrent. Slowing...
Hi, On my MacBook Pro 13 that I bought in October, it feels like everything is slowing down. The Item Chooser menu causes the "Safari Busy" announcement at least once but more times on particularly big pages. This is a fast computer (2.26 Core 2 and 4 gb RAM) but it gets slower all of the time. Sometimes, I can even type ahead of the thing (especially in Mail) where I find that my misspellings are usually due to a missing letter. Has anyone else, using one of these newer models, seen something similar? If so, does anyone have a cure? Re: Slowing...
Hi Chris, I've had a macbook pro since a few months before you got yours, and my unit is running just as fast as when i got it. I do have a lot of applications and my media library is growing steadily, but i do believe that it is because i keep it clean with cache emptying, using click2flash, x-slimmer and other applications made to increase performance. I do notice though that my ctrl key is less responsive *but thats just my paws*, and that i have a harder time navigating through spreadsheets in numbers *but it has been that way since the beginning*. For the rest, mainly for aesthetic stuff that we don't need, i use xupport to rid the finder, dock and others of any and all animations which take up RAM, CPU and therefore slow down your system when you have about 5 or more windows open. And to increase things more, i check my applications monitor and see if there's anything i installed which munches on ram and processing with invisible threads. You'd be surprised by the ammount of crap that can come up when you install stuff. But thats something you already know Hope that helps Yuma-- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Flash Again
I somehow got the peculiar notion that Flash may not suck entirely for VO users. I thought I might be able to go into AppleScript, enumerate the controls on the active Flash item and then provide a way for users to hit keystrokes to activate the Flash controls. Well, I found out that Flash doesn't have a script dictionary so I can't even try to make this accessible. This really sucks. cdh -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. To post to this group, send email to macvisionar...@googlegroups.com. Hi James, Just do a google on xupport and it will be there on your first header. Also, since this one is commercial, you can try tinker tools *same, just google it* and you will find it. Re: Flash Again
You can't control flash that way as the whole framework is in carbon. Until we get adobe stuff in coco, it won't help much to do anything. unless you call out flash buttons from javascript and get safari to read the labels and buttons extracted from javascript then plug it back in via the same bridge. Re: Slowing...
Years ago back in the days of Panther we had a slow down problem, tunred out it was the driver for our printer, which back then was a HP 2110 all in one machine. Took out the driver and Mac was back to normal. It slowed the machine down as a whole, even when I was in OS 9 using Outspoken, but I had the driver on my side then as well. Took it out, OS 9 worked fine then my wife started complaining that her OS 10 side was slugish, same solution. So it could very well be one app specific. In the case of the particular driver though, it wouldn't immediately slow down the machine when installed. It would happen later. Glad the computer outlasted the printer *lol.* Didn't have same problem with Tiger though because we did have that printer still when Tiger came out, and still used it for a while. Well my wife used it. Now use Codak, haven't had any problems with that one. On Jan 18, 2010, at 3:31 PM, Bryan Smart wrote: Its probably got something to do with one of the apps that you have loaded. If not, can anyone guess at a solution? cdh -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Battery extra menu and Voice Over
Hey James! that info is under the system profiler. You can get there by going to the apple menu. When you get to about this mac, if you hold down the option key the menu turns into system profiler. The battery life is under there. I also downloaded a little application called Coconut battery which will tell you the same info. Think I found it at version tracker. Hope this helps. Re: Battery extra menu and Voice Over
Hi James, I also wondered whether you were thinking about the Coconut battery application, which can tell you additional information about your Mac's battery performance and history -- such as the number of cycles, the current battery capacity compared to the original battery capacity, etc.. You can find Coconut battery for download at version tracker as Jim notes, or you can go to the application's software page: http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/index.html I don't think this was referenced in the current list's archives, but Coconut battery is listed in the earlier macvisionaries list archives (from before February 2009). Re: Programming
Hi James, I used to be sighted, and a 3D graphist. I know manage a 3D team, i know its odd, but this is my day in day out activity. I only baught or even touched a mac last June, as i heard Mike Arrigo's podcast and thought voice over seemed better than jaws, though the windows platform was my unit of choice back then when i was flipping vertices. I've learned applescript on the go, documented myself, and am in applescript listings to see the underlying concept of the language. I also used to do actionscript for flash, so i know how it works behind the pretty graphics. If you want to learn about applescript, i can give you some links to sites and books you can get and start scripting. Its a very useful tool, especially for shortcuts and productivity. and what's beautiful about it is that you can logically automate tasks between various applications, even those which don't initially have a dictionary or suite. Its all in the detective work of how you want to proceed. Hope that helps Cheers Yuma-- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. windows 7 painfully sluggish in fusion 3
Hi listers, Do any of you have tips on how to speed up windows 7 performance in fusion 3? I have a macbook with a 2.4 GHZ core2 DUO processor, and 2 GB of ram. I gave windows 7 1 GB, which most people say is sufficient. All I can say is that I'm not impressed. I get lots of choppy sound and stuttering speech, and my computer's fan starts whirring like crazy every time I power up the virtual machine. Even doing something as simple as reading the web page with a screen reader makes the fan increase in speed. Furthermore, I notice that my mac apps and voiceover are sluggish as well as the windows programs. Note: I tried turning off the file indexing feature of 7, but this did not help much if at all. Is windows 7 just not usable on a machine with my specs? Or is there some setting buried either in fusion or win 7's interface that I'm missing? Searching the iTunes Store of a different country [was Re: GPS Apps for New Zealand besides TomTom [was Re: Response from Navigon]]
Hi Earle, I'm using iTunes on my Mac, so this description of how to change countries for the iTunes Store may not translate well into instructions for Windows screen readers. I'm supplying this answer (and cc'ing to the Macvisionaries list), to provide general information about how to find out content that is available in the iTunes Stores of other countries for discussions like iPhone app availability -- not as a way to purchase from other stores. The quick answer is that the Power Search area of the iTunes Store that you can use to search for applications also has a link to "Change Country". If you select and activate that link, you'll be on a page with links to the United States (or whatever country store you started from), followed by alphabetically ordered links to all the other iTunes Stores, from Argentina to Vietnam (and a further link that is not announced by VoiceOver, but that I'm told is Japan labeled with Japanese characters). If you activate any one of those links, you'll be taken to the iTunes Store home page for that country. Then, if you choose "Search" from the Store menu on the iTunes menu bar, you'll be taken to the Power Search page for iTunes for that country, and can search for apps (or music, or movies, etc.). You won't be able to purchase apps or content that you can't buy from your own country's iTunes Store, but you can see what is there, and you can bring up the context menus for links to each application menu and copy the links. Here's the way I would change my settings to do a search for apps in the iTunes Store for another country starting from the way I would do a search for applications in my own iTunes Store. 1. From iTunes on your computer, navigate to the "Store" menu on the iTunes menu bar. (On a Mac, you would do this by pressing Control- Option-M to go to the menu bar, then press "S" to move to the "Store" menu.) 2. Arrow down into the "Store" menu and select the "Search" option. (Again, on a Mac, you would press the down arrow, then press "S" to go to "Search…", and then press Enter to choose the Search option; this sets your selection to "iTunes Store" in iTunes' source table and sets the HTML area of the iTunes store to the Power Search page.) 3. Navigate to the HTML area of the iTunes Store to do a search. (On a Mac I could tab to where I hear "iTunes Store, HTML content"; but I'd probably shorten the number of key presses to navigate to the HTML area of the iTunes Store with the following sequence, which is both specific to the Mac with VoiceOver and to the current version of iTunes: ) a. Command-Option-F to navigate to the search text field b. Control-Option-Down Arrow to navigate to the "Sign into my iTunes Store account" button [Note: on a Mac the VoiceOver keys are the Control and Option keys; typing "VO-Down Arrow" and "VO-Right Arrow" is a lot faster than typing Control-Option-Down Arrow", etc. so I'll use "VO" to mean "press the Control and Option keys together with other specified keys."] c. VO-Right Arrow to navigate to "iTunes Store, HTML content" 4. Interact with the iTunes Store HTML area using VO-Shift-Down Arrow 5. VO-Down Arrow to navigate to the "All Results" pop up button 6. VO-Space to press the "All Results" pop up button, arrow down to "Applications", and press Enter to change the pop up button to search for Applications. 7. Interact (VO-Shift-Down Arrow) and VO-Command-H to the header fields for entering the Title/Keywords for each App, then VO-Down Arrow and type in your search terms, such as "GPS", or leave this blank; VO-Command-H to "Developer Name" then VO-Down Arrow and type in search terms, such as "Navigon", or leave this blank. If you want to set a category, VO-Command-H to Category, VO-Down Arrow to the pop up button and VO-Space to press the pop up button. Use your arrow keys or press the keys for the first letters of the category to change the setting from "All Categories" (e.g. press "n a" then press enter to set the search category to "Navigation").
