Re: secondary sound card and voice over

2009-11-12 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux

Ok, that's a nice one.

But there's something else:

I need to output for example a mixing session from a dj software, and have
another output, meaning another headphone jack to hear only what voice over
tells me. I want to do that so when i mix a session, i only hear voice over on
the earphone, from which i will be building my playlist and pre-cueing my next
songs.

Is that possible from the system settings, or do i have to include a second
sound card?

Thanks, and best

installing windows7 on my macbook pro

2009-11-12 Thread anouk radix

Hello everyone, I would like to try windows 7 (either 64 or 32 bit) on my
macbook pro because this is currently my only computer in use. I have another
laptop that runs vista, I see an upgrade from vista to 7 home ultimate for 50
euro. I guess i cant install that upgrade on my macbook pro instead?
I also found a bootcamp application on my hd using spotlight so I guess htat
cant be too difficult, but are the windows drivers for my macbook pro included
on the snow leopard cd?
Also, if i reboot with my new dual boot system can I just type in 1 enter for
os x and 2 enter for windows?
Thanks in advance for any information,
Greetings, Anouk

Re: equalizing sound on macbook pro

Hello Yuma,

Since the voice that is giving you the most trouble is Bruno, have you tried
adjusting the pitch for this voice in VoiceOver Utility? You can also change
the volume of the voice which might help, too.

Cheers,

Anne

problems deleting text from file

2009-11-12 Thread anouk radix

Hello, I needed to get liecense information from an email message because its
long and I need to paste it into an installation window. So i save the mail as
an rtf file and then open textedit to highlight (shift-down arrow) and cut
(command-x) the text away that I dont need. BUT after the highlighting of the
first few lines (its a long mail) voicover stops speaking, i do another few
lines but now voicover says only top and bottom of document so it seems that
the document is empty.
Is this buggy or does it work in other programs? This is rather irritating.

frustrating program installation

2009-11-12 Thread anouk radix

Hi everyone, ok i bought two cereproc voices. They have a license key system
that you just cant type manually, its like 5 lines of text and random numbers.
I was finally able to copy that textblock out of the email but now I cant seem
to get it pasted into the license checker. I am standing on the text edit field
and I know the text is all contained in the clipboard but command-v just wont
work and I cant get the text to where I want it to so ergo I cant get the
program installed.
Any help would be appreciated because I thought pasting stuff worked through
the whole of mac os x.

If you use the Text Only pages, after clicking on Listen Now for the programme
you've selected, wait until the page loads and then click on the Graphic
Version of the page, and after loading that page, the programme will start
playing.

You still don't get access to the controls, but at least it plays the programme.

Cheers,

Anne

You might like to ry Levelator. It is a darg and drop app, but drag and drop

Oh and Levelator is a free app.

Hi,

the pitch doesn't change on infovox voices. Also, it happens to all the
voices, including alex. And i am not having hearing problems either.

The problem appears wehn i type, and not all the time

Explaination of Trash for Christina

2009-11-12 Thread James & Nash

Hi Christina,,

Perhaps this explaination will help clear things up for you a bit. Bare in
mind though that this is my own interpretation of how it works and so others
on this list may provide better information for you.

The Mac sees the Trash as akin to a virtual drive - a Disk Image. So once
you send files to the Trash, they are there waiting to be deleted. However,
if you then search for those files (or in your case add any), Mac can still
see, access and use those files until they are deleted.

I may be wrong, but this is my interpretation of how it works. I hope it
makes sense to you, and I completely understand why you became confused.

Re: fission

2009-11-12 Thread Nicolai Svendsen

Hi,

Yes, definitely. The only thing that is not currently accessible in any Rogue
Amoeba product is the "Effects" area. You can add effects, but when you'd like
to add more than one it seems impossible. Of course, if anyone has a workaround
to this, I'd be happy to hear it. Clicking with the mouse in the empty scroll
area opens the menu through which you can add a single effect. After you
perform this step, you can hit the delete key and it will clear the effect if
you have focus in the yet empty scroll area. I can't seem to add more than one.

Re: Explaination of Trash for Christina

Thanks everyone. :) H, is there a way to just delete the items
out of trash that I removed from the SD card?

I do realize that I can use my stream to delete files but it leaves
an empty folder behind. I'm not running the latest version of the
firmware for the stream. I just haven't done it since I was not
having any issues with the current firmware I have and was not aware
of any benefits of the latest upgrade. :)

Major Problem with macbook, Need Help ASAP

2009-11-12 Thread Eleni Vamvakari

*Sending to The Zone BBS and Mac Visionaries.*
I'm having a major problem with my Macbook and have no clue what's
going on. I was writing something in Text Edit and then I lost
speech. I tried turning Voiceover back on but with no luck. So I
restarted the machine. It started fine but again, no speech when I
pressed keys. Yet Voiceover does start cause it greets me, and so
does Skype, so I know the programs are working. It seems that my
keyboard control has completely gone. I checked to see if it was
because I had it on Greek layout but that's not the case because even
the command for turning VO on and off isn't working. I have an
external keyboard but don't know where it is right now to test if it's
the hardware. Any suggestions or help would really be appreciated. I
have no other modern machines available now except the large desktop
that I'm working on which is downstairs and I'm now living upstairs.
I'm on Windows now, and this pc has some kind of a mic/line in
problem, so aside from replying here, I can only use MSN
scholar1...@hotmail.com, e-mail magkis...@gmail.com or, as a last
resort, the chat portion of Skype Therebetisa.

Thanks,
Eleni

Have just installed 4.0.4 update, minutes ago. If I see anything interesting
will report.
Macworld says; Software Update will tell you that the update improves
JavaScript performance, makes searching through large browser histories less
painful, and enhances the stability of third-party plug-ins and, for what
it’s worth, Yahoo Mail (Yahoo!).

Hi,

I haven't exactly noticed anything that's worth noting in my case. It seems a

still crashes every time I enter a table on a certain forum. I did report it,

more stable in my case, for sure.

Re: Major Problem with macbook, Need Help ASAP

2009-11-12 Thread Tiffany D

I'm responding with my old address, where I get full messages, so I
won't clutter the inboxes of those who get this list in digest mode
like I do at the other. Anyway, I'll definitely try the keyboard. I
got my macbook in December of 2007. It's running whatever the version
was before the last automatic update. I never really took notice,
sorry. If anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free to offer
them.

Thanks,
Eleni

Nice. Sunspider Javascript benchmarks dropped from 857ms to 671ms on my
MacbookPro. That's a bit more than a 20% improvement in JavaScript execution
speed.

voiceover getting crashy after installing cereproc william

2009-11-12 Thread anouk radix

Hello, Voicover has restarted a lot more often after installing william and
sometimes I get weird plops and osunds in the text while reading. Once william
started reading a string of text and numbers that was not in the text that I
was reading and even stopping and restarting voicover could not stop him
talking. All in all from the short time I have used william he seems rather
unstable on the mac platform.

Re: voiceover getting crashy after installing cereproc william

2009-11-12 Thread Nicolai Svendsen

Hi,

I think that applies to both platforms. William wasn't working that well with
my Windows machine, and though he sounded fairly decent, he tended to spell
simple things as "install". As for your experience, it sounds absolutely
terrifying. I might try it one day to see for myself, simply to find out if my
William behaves the same way. It might be a brilliant idea to send some
feedback to Cereproc about this if there is no other possible way, somehow, to
correct the problem.

Thanks for the insight into how it worked on the Mac.

Re: Safari 4.0.4 update released???

2009-11-12 Thread Donal Fitzpatrick

Hi James,

OK I'm not sure how much you know of internet markup, so forgive me if I'm
being too simplistic.

Way back in about 1995 what we know of as the internet was still pretty much in
its infancy. At that stage, documents were rudimentary and the things that
could be displayed on the web were fairly primitive. At this time browsers
such as the text-based Lynx, and the graphically oriented Mosaic and Netscape
were dominant.

Documents were static. They were prepared using HTML, and the level of
interactivity was minimal. Along came Netscape (the company) and decided it
would be nice to have a degree of interactivity on the web. So they developed
Javascript.

In essence, javascript sits in the header portion of an HTML document and
enables client-side scripts to be embedded into web pages. This differs from
PHP (another scripting language) in that PHP runs on the server and delivers
pages to the browser.

OK let's give you an example. Let's suppose you have a form on a web page that
requires a certain type of input; let's say for arguments sake a telephone
number. So I as a user enter abcdef7 instead of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. I click the
submit button. If the developer has written the appropriate javascript code,
it will check the input of the form before it is sent to the server for
processing. If everything is in order, (which in our previous example it is
not) it will send the data to the server for storage or whatever needs to be
done. However, as there are errors in the data in the telephone number field
it can either pop up a message box informing us of the error, or perform some
other action.

Javascript can also handle various events like mouse clicks, keyboard events,
and loads of other things to make the web experience more dynamic. However, in
my opinion, badly written Javascript has been responsible for more inaccessible
or unusable webpages than anything else over the years, and yep I'm including
flash in there as well.

In essence, Javascript, therefore, is a client-side (or browser side) way of
adding dynamism or interactivity to web pages.

I'm giving a lecture to some first year undergrads on this stuff in a few
weeks, so if you do want more info just let me know and I'll send you a link to
the notes.

Cheers,

Donal

Re: Major Problem with macbook, Need Help ASAP

2009-11-12 Thread Tiffany D

Okay. I got my external keyboard and it works fine. whatever this
is, it seems to be a hardware issue. I wonder if it'll help to
upgrade to the latest version of Leopard. I'm gonna do an update and
see what happens. I had this happen last time and they put on a new
keyboard, so it should be doing this. Also, last time, it was just a
few keys. Now, it seems to be the whole keyboard. Does anyone know
of a compact flash card reader that's compatible with the Mac? I was
planning on getting some type II cards and an adapter in any case to
use with my Windows and DOS machines, but I might have to do this alot
sooner than I thought.

Thanks,
Eleni

There is an article addressing this issue. My advice is to send note to Apple
on this and I can't recall where I read the article, but you may go to Apple's
site and download the combo updater, which apparently has worked for some.

that requires a certain type of input; let's say for arguments sake a
telephone number. So I as a user enter abcdef7 instead of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. I
click the submit button. If the developer has written the appropriate
javascript code, it will check the input of the form before it is sent to
the server for processing. If everything is in order, (which in our
previous example it is not) it will send the data to the server for storage
or whatever needs to be done. However, as there are errors in the data in
the telephone number field it can either pop up a message box informing us
of the error, or perform some other action.

Javascript can also handle various events like mouse clicks, keyboard
events, and loads of other things to make the web experience more dynamic.
However, in my opinion, badly written Javascript has been responsible for
more inaccessible or unusable webpages than anything else over the years,
and yep I'm including flash in there as well.

In essence, Javascript, therefore, is a client-side (or browser side) way of
adding dynamism or interactivity to web pages.

I'm giving a lecture to some first year undergrads on this stuff in a few
weeks, so if you do want more info just let me know and I'll send you a link
to the notes.

Cheers,

Donal

Re: voiceover getting crashy after installing cereproc william

2009-11-12 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux

Hi,

With the sraproc voices, i've had a subpar experience, from the process of
purchasing it, to licensing it, and the general feel of the voice. I've
downloaded heather, and i find the voice kind of low quality, somewhat noisy,
not as crisp as the infovox voices.

I don't know how much they actually test and get the community to try their
app, but there is no demo version, so that sort of explains a major part of it.

I will stick to the infovox voices, they are way more hifidelity, and they
don't crash on me.

my opinion

best

Is virtual box accessible?

2009-11-12 Thread Bejarano, Rafael P.

Hello everyone,

I just found out about a piece of free virtualization software called
virtualbox. Does anyone on this list know if it is accessible with VO? A
related question I have is whether virtualbox can run OS 10 as a virtual
machine on a PC. Answers to either or both of the above questions would be
greatly appreciated.

Re: Major Problem with macbook, Need Help ASAP

2009-11-12 Thread Tiffany D

This external keyboard is driving me nuts! It seems to be missing a
key on the left side (my macbook has four on that side and this one
only has three), the escape key is stuck down and I can't shift tab,
though I can tab. I haven't changed synths to hear the pitch when I
write a capital letter so must do that to see what's going on there.
Anyway, I'm wondering if this is still under warranty. I got it in
December 2007.

Thanks,
Eleni

How Much is My Macbook Worth?

2009-11-12 Thread Tiffany D

Hi again,

I'm really considering selling my Macbook if I can't just get it fixed
under warranty. As I mentioned in the previous thread, it was bought
in December of 2007. I have all the Leopard disks and documentation
for it, even a nice bag that we got. The adapter's a bit messed up
and only charges the machine when it's off. If you try to charge it
when it's on, it won't work. As I said today, the built-in keyboard
isn't working, but the external one works fine for the most part. I'm
just not sure what to do about my Acapella Dimitris voice and my
Tapedeck (both are legal and registered). If I uninstall them or do a
reinstall of Leopard, will I still be able to use them on another
system? Anyway, how much is this worth? We originally bought it for
about $1,700, but that was with the Apple Care plan and considering
the problems it now has and how old it is, I know I can't sell it for
anywhere near that price. So what's a good asking price to start?

Talk soon,
Eleni

Oh boy. I'm an idiot. I forgot that I already told you guys when I
got my machine earler in the problems thread, did it again and now
mentioned it here. Hello brain? Are you there? lol Anyway, it works
with another adapter (borrowed from a family member) so there's no
problem with the port, just my particular adapter. It's a dual core
processor with a 160 hard disk. I would check on Apple's site, but
I'm sure the specs have changed. It's not a Macbook Air or Pro, just
a regular Macbook. Maybe, that'll help anyone who might have the
specs so they can post them here. I don't wanna tell you something
that's rong. Anyway, I'm honestly not sure how much I want. I'm
trying to find a reasonable price that works for me and the person to
whom I'm selling it. I also need to see if it's still under warrenty
and worth fixing.

Safari 4.0.4 busy on Macbook

2009-11-12 Thread Ryan Mann

I have an Imac and a Macbook. Both computers run Mac OS 10.6.2. I updated to
Safari 4.0.4 on both computers. This version of Safari seems pretty stable on
my Imac. However, on my Macbook it seems to be getting busy a lot. It is
pretty consistent on the blog http://www.dailypaul.com. If I go to this blog
on my Imac, it works as it should. On my Macbook, whenever I try to read
comments, VoiceOver will start saying "Safari busy. Safari ready." Before I
upgraded to Safari version 4.0.4, I didn't usually have problems like this on
my Macbook. Why would Safari 4.0.4 work differently on my macbook than it does
on my Imac if I'm running the exact same operating system? I went ahead and
reported the problem to Apple.

Re: How Much is My Macbook Worth?

2009-11-12 Thread Tyler Littlefield

It shouldn't be to hard to just replace the kb yourself. What I'm noticing with
mine is that the bottom of the case pops off, but I think the back of the
others pop off, on some of the older ones. This one would require you remove
the motherboard, but I'm thinking the hd would be ok as it looks to be in the
right-hand-corner front where there is no kb.

 Talk soon,
 Eleni

DJ set with dj3 software

2009-11-12 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux

Hi Gang,

I am in the process of releasing my blog at www.theblindsamurai.com, where i
will introduce myself, talk about what happened to me last year, and start with
a podcast on Djing with algoriddim's DJ3 software, as well as coupling it with
a full digital dj set which include these following midi controllers:

-the vestac vci-100 twin turntable midi controller
-the nano pad 12 pad midi controller for sampling and drumkit library
-the nano kontrol for on the fly effects handling with 9 knobs and 18 switches.

There is a different version of thevci line which is vci-50, but the turntables
are way too small for me.

Also, i am still in contact with the guys at algoriddim, and our thread is
growing with back and forth communication on the actual accessibility issues
for those who don't want to get the full dj midi kit, and do mixes directly via
the keyboard and trackpad.

The main issue is that there should be hotspots assigned with boundary
restrictions switched on/off on both turntables so that the blind user can
scratch with the trackpad when the switch is on, and turn it back off with a
single keystroke.

Will post when all is up.

Thanks, and best

Apple Care is supposed to last you 3 years.

While your machine is under Apple Care, Apple will fix anything wrong with your
machine that they can reproduce. For free.

I have a first generation Mac Book (Core Duo) and I sent it 3 times to Apple. I
did not send it in fact, they sent a truck to pick it up... It is in Japan so I
don't know for where you live.

Anyway, get in touch with them and follow their instructions. That's everything
you have to do.

Re: voiceover getting crashy after installing cereproc william

2009-11-12 Thread anouk radix

Hello, I agree that thry might not be as hq but they do sound very natural and
I like them with reading longer text especially william BUT this is impossible
because voicover becomes so totally unstable if I use them. Also they are
really slow in comparison with alex. My buying experience was good though i did
not get the william liecense immeidately ( i bought sarah and william at the
seem time) but that was fixed within hours. I do indeed totally and
wholeheartedly agree THEY SHOULD RELEASE A DOWNLOADABLE DEMO. Because at this
time I have the feeling this program was totally not tested on the mac with
voicover.
A bit disappointing really, even though these voices are not insanely expensive
you still expect SOME quality control. I did submit a bug request but currently
its just really unstable.

Re: voiceover getting crashy after installing cereproc william

2009-11-12 Thread anouk radix

Hey Nic, yeah I immediately sent them a bug report. They REALLY should release
a demo that can be downloaded because now I doubt ANY testing on the mac was
done at all. I feel fairly disappointed, ok these things were not insanely
priced but I still paid good money for these and then you expect things to
work, its a commercial product after all.

Re: voiceover getting crashy after installing cereproc william

2009-11-12 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux

One difference, but that goes a long way from being crash and pronounciation
bug free, is the fact that you can change the pitch to the seraproc voices. But
again, they don't breathe like Alex, so it defeats the added feature.

Best
