Hi Christina,, Perhaps this explaination will help clear things up for you a bit. Bare in mind though that this is my own interpretation of how it works and so others on this list may provide better information for you.
The Mac sees the Trash as akin to a virtual drive - a Disk Image. So once you send files to the Trash, they are there waiting to be deleted. However, if you then search for those files (or in your case add any), Mac can still see, access and use those files until they are deleted. I may be wrong, but this is my interpretation of how it works. I hope it makes sense to you, and I completely understand why you became confused.
