Re: Toast?

2009-11-02 Thread Scott Howell

Toast 7 was the last version I tried and it was slightly accessible,
but more an exercise in frustration. There are a number of
alternatives available depending upon what you want to accomplish. For
creating audio CDs to play in a standard non-MP3 player, iTunes does a
fine job, but think some had issues with gapless tracks and I assume
that this applies to creating audio CDs as well as when Ripping them.
Dragon Burn is an accessible option from
http://www.ntius.com/en/us/home/default.asp
and can be also purchased from http://www.macupdate.com.

Re: Issues with zoom

2009-11-02 Thread Charlie Bates

Hi Pete

I think I will do another clean install of snow leopard. If i get the
same issue again I will go back to Leopard.

I have zoom and voiceover on together sometimes but the majority of
the time i am just using zoom.

I have sent feedback to apple regarding this issue.

Thanks for your reply.

how to get the show package content option in the context/right--cliick menu?

Hi list,

I have a thread which explains how to open certain files, and it says
to click/press return on the show package content item in a menu. I
can't seem to find it. Has anyone come across this one?

Re: Receiving Files through iChat

Hi Justin,

You might try either using the Window chooser menu (VO-F2) or, I think
there is a specific shortcut for bringing up the file transfer window
in iChat (Command-Option-L).

Cheers,

Re: how to get the show package content option in the context/right--cliick menu?

2009-11-02 Thread Esther

Hi Yuma,

"Show package contents" sounds like the procedure for examining
application bundles. You navigate to your selection, typically in the
Applications folder (e.g. use Command-Shift A to go there in Finder),
or it might be a downloaded application. Bring up the contextual menu
(VO-Shift-M) and select "Show package contents", then when the
Contents folder for the application is displayed, either expand it (VO-
backslash) or use Command-Down-Arrow to navigate down into the
folder. There may be a Resources folder, or sometimes you'll find
code definitions for using AppleScript.

HTH

Cheers,

Esther

RE: installing SL server on a macbook

2009-11-02 Thread Blake Sinnett

Actually, the Intel Macs use EFI (Extensible firmware interface.) The following
is from Wikipedia:

In January 2006, Apple Inc. shipped its first Intel-based Macintosh computers.
These systems use EFI and the Framework instead of Open Firmware, which had
been used on its previous PowerPC-based systems. On April 5, 2006, Apple first
released Boot Camp, which produces a Windows drivers disk and a non-destructive
partitioning tool to allow the installation of Windows XP or Vista without
requiring a reinstallation of Mac OS X. A firmware update was also released
that added BIOS support to its EFI implementation. Subsequent Macintosh models
shipped with the newer firmware. All current Macintosh systems are also able to
boot BIOS Operating Systems such as Windows XP and Vista. (With the exception
of the Xserve platform)

Yes it's fairly accessible but it has a couple show stoppers in my opinion:
You can't comment or like someones post from the mobile app unless someone has
done it before you. Why it is so, i can't for the life of me understand.
There's an unlabeled button to the right of every post, clicking on it brings
up an even bigger button and clicking on that yeelds no result whatsoever. I
have tried to ask other blind users about how they comment or like posts if
they are the first one to comment or like but haven't gotten an answer to this.
The other thing is that you can't delete friends, you'll have to go to the big
facebook site to do this.

Re: slight accessibility issue with fusion 3

2009-11-02 Thread Thuy

Hi John. I tried to follow your instructions for gaining keyboard
control of the virtual machine, but unfortunately, when I tried to
restart VO, The keyboard stopped working and all I got was a bing
noise. I had no control of the Mac at all and no Voiceover, so the
only solution was to do a hard reset. I am using the Bootcamp
partition as my VM and it seems to boot up fine, but as I said before,
I can't get any keyboard control over it. Any advice would be great?
The VM is an old one that was set up with Leopard and Fusion 2, but
the upgrade to Fusion 3 seemed to be fine and the Virtual machine
boots up and automatically installed the latest VMware tools, which
has messed up the JAWS video intercept, but I'm hoping that will be
easy enough to solve if only my keyboard would work?

Cheers

Thuy

braille not working in mail

2009-11-02 Thread erik burggraaf

Hi guys. I've got a braille connect 32 here. My roommate has a
bc40. We both have macbook pros running snow leopard.

Neither one of us can read a message in mail using the braille
display. It will do the first few lines no problem. Then it gets to
a point. The focus seems to shift back and fourth from the headers to
the message, and the dots start slapping up and down on the display.
At the end of it all your at the bottom of the message.

It does the same thing no matter whether I interact with the message
or not. It did not do this before I upgraded.

Anyone else have this problem?

question about the log on screenq

2009-11-02 Thread erik burggraaf

Hi, I went out to do some training on a mac the other day and when I
started up leopard it threw up the log on screen asking for a
password. The client didn't know her password and when I called the
company that sold the think, they said there wasn't one. Sure enough,
when I pressed enter it logged me on, OK, my question is, how can I
get rid of this screen? The user has no interest in logging on with a
password when her computer starts. Not that it's over much trouble to
hit enter, but it would speed things up for her if I could just get
the screen gone.

Thanks for you help as always.

Re: Receiving Files through iChat

2009-11-02 Thread Mark BurningHawk Baxter

Cycle through open windows with command Accent. if that doesn't work,
try commands 1 or 2, depending on which Ichat account you're in;
sometimes that seems to pop up a window that's otherwise hidden. If
all else fails, use windows chooser menu, VO F2 twice quickly.

fusion

2009-11-02 Thread John W. Carty
I'm exploring the purchase of my first mac but it appears I will still need
windows access so can anyone tell me if they are using this fusion application
with windows and can you have jaws installed to speak automatically when
windows is launched?

Would I still need to run anti virus software under windows?

Regularly clean the windows registry?

What about windows updates? Do they still provide automatic prompts?

How much memory should be allocated for fusion/windows when you install it?

Re: fusion

2009-11-02 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
HI John,

Windows will still behave like a regular machine, despite the machine
being virtual. Therefore, it can be infected by viruses. However, this
will not affect the Mac for obvious reasons. Also, the machine is
isolated from the Mac. Thus, Any principals that you applied to a
regular Windows machine will still need to be applied with a virtual
machine. It will behave just like Windows, to make a long story short.
Some people recommend allocating half of the RAM that your Mac has
installed to the virtual machine, but personally I prefer to
experiment. Keep in mind that if you set the RAM allocation too high,
memory swapping between the virtual machine and the Macintosh
operating system may occur. And yes, JAWS can start up automatically
when Windows launches just like any other Windows machine. You can
choose to share some of the Mac folders with Windows and the other way
around, though I prefer to keep them entirely separate. This is a
personal preference, of course.

Re: slight accessibility issue with fusion 3

2009-11-02 Thread Nicolai Svendsen

Hi,

For me, I had to put it into full screen mode (Control-Command-
Return), turn off VoiceOver and hit Command-G. On occasion, though, it
seems to automatically just grab the keyboard input in my case when I
do this. Not having it in full screen doesn't work for me at all. Good
luck.

Re: Can't Send Mail

2009-11-02 Thread Scott Howell

Hi James, thanks. I know I can change the outbound ports, but pop on a
non-SSL inbound connection is 110, but can't recall what it would be
for a connection secured with SSL.
I think your correct 993 sounds familiar and maybe that is the inbound
port. Verizon doesn't require SSL for inbound connections, but they do
for outbound. Well okay, I'm getting conflicting stories from Verizon
on that, but sending no problem, receiving a problem, so once I get
the receiving part figured out, life will be good. :)

Re: question about the log on screenq

2009-11-02 Thread erik burggraaf

Hi, I got this far on my own. I'm just looking around my own
macbook. In the user accounts table I have my user and I have a group
that says log in options. When I select this I get automatic log in.
Mine was set to off. I changed it to erik burggraaf, filled in my
password, and now Im off to the races. My client didn't have this
though. There was only her user account in the table, no log in
options group.

I'm using snow leopard here and she is using leopard. I'd like to get
this set before she does her upgrade. Am I missing something?

No I think it's the same in Leopard too. There is a heck box for setting up
how login works. Alternatively, your client could always do a resh install.

others. Not so much for your Mac, but for your VM.

[SH] I've allocated as little as 512MB, since I only need windows for
two applications, but you might find pushing that to 768Mb will
provide better performance. If you have 4Gb of ram, you could of
course allocate 1Gb of ram and windows would be fine.

There is an automatic login option in Leopard as there is in SL.
You'll find it in the same location under Leopard as you did under SL.

Re: Can't Send Mail

2009-11-02 Thread Scott Howell

Thanks, will go back and check. I had initially turned on parental
controls and disabled them during this mail setup. Worse case is I'll
delete the account and start over. In fact I tried removing all the
files in ~/Library/Mail, but the settings must be in another location
since starting Mail all the account details are retained. I know I
need to go track them down and likely in another folder, but I was
tired of screwing with it, so I'll go back and try searching for them
again. I'd like to save this as a last resort of course. :)

Thanks,

Try deleting them from the Trash. Mac treats Trash as a virtual drive and

Thanks James, I actually did do that, but I'll of course check because
as frustrating as it was and as annoyed with Verizon's tech as I was

Hi James, thanks. I know I can change the outbound ports, but pop
 on a
non-SSL inbound connection is 110, but can't recall what it would
 be
for a connection secured with SSL.
I think your correct 993 sounds familiar and maybe that is the
 inbound
port. Verizon doesn't require SSL for inbound connections, but they
 do
for outbound. Well okay, I'm getting conflicting stories from
 Verizon
on that, but sending no problem, receiving a problem, so once I get
the receiving part figured out, life will be good. :)

RE: fusion

2009-11-02 Thread Frank Ventura
Hi, short answer is Yes to all of those questions. As far as memory goes
that all depends upon what Windows operating system you are using and
what you need it to do. I have Microsoft SBS 2008 virtualized on a Mac
Pro which is alocated 8GB of RAM. On my Mac Book I have Windows 2008 R2
virtualized in a 2GB memory space and Windows XP virtual machine
allocated 1GB. It all depends upon your needs.

selecting files in finder and finder commands

2009-11-02 Thread a radix
Hello everyone, is there somewhere a list of commands/shortcuts that I can use
within the finder? I mean commands to go to the beginning/end of a list, copy
files and most importantly SELECT files because I have one huge directory with
about 2000 files that I want to copy to different subdirectoryes and I dont
want to do it one by one.
Thanks a lot,

Re: browser alternatives

2009-11-02 Thread Chris Blouch
There is no special accessible version. Just download regular Opera 10
from opera.com and give it a try. I only played with it a bit to at
least discover that the content area seemed accessible. At the same
time, as was pointed out, there are some holes like inaccessible
pull-down menus. Since the browser is free you can just give it a try.

Yes, it is 995. 993 seems familiar for some reason as well. Don't

Mobile Me account for him. Ah hell, what is 993, I should go look it
up, I know its familiar for a reason.

opening atachments in email

2009-11-02 Thread Donna Goodin

Hi all,

How does one do this? Yet again, I've tried enter, VO-Space, Command-
O, Command-L, interacting, not interacting, clicking the mouse, and
nothing seems to open the file. The file in question is a word file.

Thanks, and sorry for the dumb question.
Donna

Question on Using Dragon Burn

2009-11-02 Thread David McLean

Hello, Has anyone used Dragon Burn to create an audio cd? If so how
do you add tracks to the list of songs to be burned? I am presented
with an empty table but can't find a way to add anything.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Happy to trouble shoot with you. I actually haven't run iWeb through

Hi,

Do a VO-shift-M. That should do the trick. You should have the option
to open it if you're right on it, at least.

Re: selecting files in finder and finder commands

2009-11-02 Thread Anne Robertson

Hello Anouk,

The shortcuts for Finder commands are all shown in the Finder menus
after each command.

VO commands are all shown in the VO menus which you reach by pressing
VO-H twice.

Cutting and pasting is not available for files and folders to prevent
loss of data in case of a sudden power failure. This has always been
the case on the Mac.

Selecting non-contiguous files:
• Start on first file to be selected;
• Turn cursor tracking off (VO-Shift-F3);
• VO down to next file to be selected and press VO-Command-Spacebar;
• Continue in the same way until all required files are selected, then
press Command-C to copy them;
• Paste them where you want them and return to original window and
press Command-Delete to get rid of the originals.

Don't forget to put cursor tracking back on when you've finished the
whole operation.

Cheers,

Anne
