I have installed lyx + fptex on windows. When I try to call the dvi viewer Latex can't find "setspace.sty". I found setspace.sty in the net, but where do i copy it in the fptex path ? Do I have to refresh the tex catalogue ? Help very appreciated!
lyx2lyx fails on document
Hi, I created a lyx document a week or two ago with the then newest version of Lyx in the current stable distribution. Today, I tried to open the same document, and I receive this error: file.lyx is from a newer version of LyX, and lyx2lyx failed to convert it. Both the PC the document was created on and the PC I'm trying to open it on have very recent versions of LyX. They may not be the exact same versions, since one PC runs the latest stable Debian, and one the latest LTS Ubuntu, so both PCs have recent versions of LyX installed How can this be? Windows 1.3.6: unrecognizable math symbols
Hello, I have been using the unofficial Windows port installed in a Cygwin environment for a while. Now I have downloaded and installed LyX 1.3.6 for Windows. The installation of all needed components went smoothly and OK (as far as I can tell). But the result was disappointing in that mathematical symbols and greek letters etc. no longer display as anything recognizable. E.g. the symbol for a greek alfa is a trademark sign, a sum sign is a capital P. When converted to dvi format the result is fine. What am I missing? Please respond directly, I'm not subscribed to the list. Lars Henriksen

I need a Danish Abstract (Resume) and an English Abstract. These are supposed to be on to different pages. Epigraph memoir

How to manage colours on screen?
One can find several exampels on howto make boxes with coulor and frames etc using ert or latex code within a style/layout file. But how do one put the color in the box on screen? Bg color seems to work only for insets. One way to deal with would possible be to make several instanses of shaded box and then include them by expanding the ui files. This seems a bit clumsy and there is a problem inside this to. If one change the shading color it only effect the output not the screen. This is true also for ver 2.0 where you can change the shading in the user interface. Any suggestions.? What I want is to give a slight and different coulor to definitions theorems proofs etc. The natural place would be in the style dropdown but meny could work /Lars

Win32 Port: Included images doesn't show in LyX
Recently I installed the Win32 port of LyX, and generally it works, but the following problems remains: 1) The included images doesn't show up due to some "Rendering Error". 2) I use the Yap and Ghostscript as my viewers. Whenever they start up I get an sh-error saying that sh has performed an illegal operation. (I don't get such error upon starting up LyX). The error is apparently not serious enough to prevent gsview or yap from working, and the everything looks as expected in both viewers. Any ideas how to fix any of these ? Win32 port: Help with the X-server
I'm using the Win32 port of LyX on a machine which also is hooked up to a network. This causes a problem with X-Win32 X-server: Only one person at a time on a node can use the X-win32, so if someone else is using X-win32 I get an error message and X-win32 shuts down. This even though I am only using X-win32 for LyX and not at all using it over the network. I have managed to get it to work only if I physically disconnect the network from my machine. Is there any way to make Xwin32 to work in this setup without having to disconnect the network connection, (or do I have to fork out real money for a full version?)? Thanks for any help, Lars.

Chapter* and header
Hi all, After my 10 regular chapters I have two small chapters where I use the Chapter* environment (ommitting "chapter NUMBER"). My problem is that in these final chapters* the headers remain the same as in the last regular chapter and section. How do I change them to reflect the actual chapter* (and not the previous chapter)? \headheight
Hi, How do I control \headheight (etc)? First; As an social anthropologist, and as one of the very, very few LYX-users at the faculty of humanities: LYX is absoulutely faboulous! It is a tradegy that 99.9% of my colleauges use MS Word. But sometimes using LYX can be frustrating, as I am the only person at my department who even know that there is such a thing as LYX/LaTeX. I have nobody to talk to, to get the simple advice from. Like now: I'd like to change the font size of the header. It is extremely difficult to figure out how to do it. And the problem isn't the software -- The lyx-team is doing a wonderful job with the software! Even my old 1.1.4fix3 is excellent! (And I don't want to replace it now, as this is the version that University of Oslo distributes locally) No, the problem is this: At "Header/footer" at lyx.org/help (http://www.lyx.org/help/fancy/header.php) I learn usful AND advanced tricks. There is links to two introductory pages: http://www.essex.ac.uk/linguistics/clmt/latex4ling/headers/ http://research.cmis.csiro.au/gjw/tex/docs/fancyhdr.pdf (I have also tried to search the web for better documentation, and perhaps there is something out there, but I haven't found it.) The latter document ("Page layout in LaTeX") tells me that \headheight sets fontsize at the header. The document also tells me that fancydhr.sty makes it possible to have control over "fonts, uppercase .. etc." But it is, to me, TOTALLY, UNUTTERLY AND ABSOLUTELY impossible to simply understand what to write in the preamble to control, for example, the \headheight. For example: Do I need to use the fancy pagestyle in order to use \headheight? And if so, what is the syntax of the command? I promise you one thing, all those of you who makes LYX into the most wonderful machine for writng scientific stuff ever, I promise that when I have completed my thesis (in a couple of mounths), I'll write a web-page called "LYX for the humanities" -- where I explain how LYX may be used to write philosophy, history, anthropology, etc. I'll do my best to improve the basic documentation of this wonderful program. Because; now I have used alomost 3 hours to figure out how to control the font size in the header. And I can't figure it out. I am sure the syntax is simple, if someone just shows it to me. But it is, again, TOTALLY and ABSURDELY impossible to read the documantation! So, finally; anybody who know how to change the font size in the header? Lars

But "headheight=10pt", "headheight=8pt" or "headheight=14pt" does not make any difference. The font size of the header remains the same as that of the document. Any clue? Lars

How do I make a horizontal line of given length in LyX? Can this be done without including latex code? Thanks, Lars. %%% Lars Jensen, Truckee Meadows Community College, Reno NV 89512-3999. Tel: 775.673.7113 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Sorting on non-english letters
Hi, I am using Lyx 1.1.4, bibtex and natbib, writing a book, and I am using Norwegian language. It seems that all language adaptioins works fine, except for this: References that start with a Norwegian letter are sorted after the second character in the name. So "[O-slash]degaard, Per" is sorted under "d" in the reference list, and not under "[O-slash]". Any clue to how this may be solved is welcome. Lars

Hi! I am using the document class article (AMS) together with the modules Theorems (AMS) and Theorems (By Section). Looks like Example x.y, where x is the Section. But what I really need would be something like Theorems (By Section and Subsection) - does that exist?I.e. the numbering of definitions/exapmles/theorems is like Example x.y.z, x is the Section, y is the Subsection. How can I get that? I might be ok if I found the modules Theorems (AMS) and Theorems (By Section) and had a look at them - but where do I find them? I'm using an Intel Mac. Many, many thanks! Bibtex-puzzle
Hi all, I have not used LyX for the last year or so, when I wrote up my thesis using this wonderful but really wierd program. LyX is a real hackers delight! But, as an social anthropologist in a world of only MS-Word-users, an instance of "hackers delight" can sometimes become a hacking nightmare, because computer science isn't what I know best! Anyway, this "lyx-users"-list has always been a friendly and helpful place, and I (or rather the University of Oslo) have updated to Red Hat Enterprise 3 and LyX 1.3.4. (from RH 7.* and Lyx 1.1.4) It seems that I have sorted out most of the minor LyX-hassles that followed the upgrades. Only one real puzzle remains: There are some strange troubles in finding the bibtex-database. I have my reference-base ("referanser.bib") in this folder: /sv/ernesto/tik-u9/lrisan/Dokumenter/Lyx and I have the environment variable set like this: BIBINPUTS=/sv/ernesto/tik-u9/lrisan/Dokumenter/Lyx If the LyX-document is in this directory, everything works fine. If the document is elsewhere three things happen: 1: adding a new reference in the text does not work (Insert -> Citation Reference) No datbase is found. 2: If I open the "Bibtex Generated Reference"-box, and "browse" for the reference-database, I can add the database, included /the absulute path from root/. Having done this, the command Insert -> Citation Reference works fine, and I can add new references to the text. 3: BUT still, having used the absolute path, running bibtex (by doing View -> DVI in Lyx) still fails. That is, the DVI is created, but refernces are just marked "?", and there is no reference list. When i place the LyX-document in the same directory as the reference base (also pointed to by BIBINPUTS), I need not use the absolute path ("referanser" is enough). Any clue to a solution? -lars

Re: Bibtex-puzzle
Hi all, I'm still struggeling with my bibtex-problem (and perhaps a bit off topic to lyx-users, since LyX seems to be fine). Re: Newbie: Question on Tutorial
> > When I hit return, the environment reverts to Standard, but the line is > > not indented. Subsequent lines are indented. Hi Jack, Im not sure I get all your troubles, but I do understand your general puzzlement and, perhaps, frustration! Trying LyX the first times, I wondrered what these people thought was so great about this bizzarre program! First: Standard is not indented after section because according to the Recieved Tradition of Classical Typgraphy a text shall not be indented after a section heading. And we respect the Recieved Tradition of Classical Typgraphy! LyX is pecular, in the world og word processors, because it separates two roles, two proffessions; typography and writing. The first rule is: you do the writing, LyX does the typography. MS-word/ OpenOffice-kind-of word processors have "democratised" the art of typography. Everone can do it, you don't need the experts. Sometimes this leads to novel, creative and beautiful lay out. Other times it leads to the deep frustration of someone who do not only has got the free opportunity to do typography, but the burden to /have/ to do typography. And when writing books, MS-word can make this burden a heavy one. LyX is NOT "democratic". It is elitist, when it comes to typography. The philosphy is: Most people will do worse in typography than typographs. Typographs have the Recieved Tradition of Classical Typgraphy to draw on. People have nothing. So don't give them the choice. Let people who want to write do precicely that; Write, not do typo. Free your mind to do the writing! Second rule: You can do some simple typographic choices, such as setting margins and font-types (Look at the "Layout"-menu) Third rule: You can do advanced typography, but this is not easy on LyX. It is sometimes much, much worse than working in OpenOffice! Advanced typography is done using the programming language LaTeX. If you want to write a book, expect that you have to do some hacking in LaTeX. BUT: I have written a large book in LyX without knowing anything about LaTex. This has been possible because there are many tips and tricks available on the net, on this user-list, and on various web-pages, notably "tips and tricks" at www.lyx.org. best, Lars
