This happens for all documents, not just beamer.
If for some reason you specify other font like latin modern the output is OK.
Since I had not yet the chance to do a clean install I am not sure if this is
a problem with the texlive configuration files or a real bug in the rpm
packages.

So no convertion to the new format is needed unless you intend to use new elements not available in the old release. A frontend of lyx better integrated with kde seems a nice idea. :-) I can understand though some of the frustration with kde 3, kde 4 shows a lot of promisses and good ideas. Change the \inputencoding line from ascii to auto.
The problem is in the convertion from tex to lyx where tex2lyx sets the wrong
inputencoding. The problem is that tex2lyx reads the following line of
test.tex and assumes (correctly) the encoding:
\usepackage[ascii]{inputenc}
The problem, as far as I understand, is that later tex2lyx converts the ascii
symbols to latin-1 (ngerman encoding) but keeps the inputencoding as ascii.
So I think that line 308 of preamble.cpp wants to set encoding and not
inputencoding. The fix should not be difficult after this diagnose. :-)
This problem happens both for lyx 1.5.5svn and 1.6.0svn.

I know that it is a waste :-( but you have to put the absolute path. The
problem happens because lyx moves the file to a temporary directory to create
the pdf (or any other format) and so the relative path becomes invalid.

The usual culprit in these cases is the underscore.
My suggestion is to replace the calls to str(left) and str(right) by a call to
a new function that escapes all the usual suspects.
something like:

for chr in usual_suspects:
item = item.replace(chr, usual_suspects[chr])

By 4.0 I think that you mean 1.4.x, right? In 1.4.2 I don't have any problem copy and pasting from an external source to lyx.
