Debian/testing finally updated to TeXLive 2009, I suppose Ubuntu will follow soon (or already did in some repository). Installing missing LaTeX styles or packages is relatively easy: * Install apt-file (via the package manager, e.g. aptitude). * Run `apt-file find the-style-I-need.sty`. (Replace "the-style-I-need.sty" with a search pattern matching your needs.) * Install the Debian/Ubuntu package providing this style via the package manager. As apt-file searches on a cached database, run `apt-file update` periodically. Günter
Wrong path to LaTeX files
Useful system information: * Ubuntu 9.10 * LyX 1.6.4 There are many templates and examples that will not work, because the class files can not be found. The problem seems to be that the path to LaTeX is incorrect. I would like for it to look in: /usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf-dist where, the latest LaTeX files are stored. However, LyX uses the path, /usr/share/texmf-texlive/ I have tried a complete uninstall of LyX and then reinstall; but, this has no effect on the problem. How do I get LyX to use the correct LaTeX path? Great! Thank You very much. There was a very simple line in that class file: *copyrightwanted = @true* I changed it to false and got what I needed. Re: Removing Copyright information from the bottom of a layout file
No... I wasn't asking how to remove the copyright of Siggraph. It was more like, it was putting a copyright for a document that I am authoring which I don't really need for a class report. This is a one time document and that's it. In any case, the copyright that was being put goes something like this: *"Permission to make digital or hard copies of all or part of this work for personal or classroom use is granted without fee provided that copies are not made or distributed for profit or commercial advantage and that copies bear this notice and the full citation on the first page. To copy otherwise, to republish, to post on servers or to redistribute to lists, requires prior specific permission and/or a fee."* Is it still a problem? As I understand the preceding, YOU authored all the content in this document. Siggraph wrote absolutely none of the document. As I understand the preceding, Siggraph simply, for some reason, added that copyright language in case YOU might want it, and they provided a switch (*copyrightwanted =) to remove it. If that's true, I personally would have no problem with your removing it, and although I'm not a lawyer I'd bet heavily that removing it is perfectly legal. Re: Removing Copyright information from the bottom of a layout file
Yes... Exactly... That is my situation. I am using a class file by siggraph just to get the layout of the document and the document in no way contains any information taken from information copyrighted by Siggraph. And yes, that copyright information was added by Siggraph to protect my document. The best analogy I can give perhaps is reusing a freely available template to structure your own document. Oh and by the way, thank you for your time, John On Fri, Feb 5, 2010 at 11:17 AM, Steve Litt wrote: > On Friday 05 February 2010 10:52:52 John Adams wrote: > > No... It seems you're installed texlive 2009 manually and still you have the old .deb 2007 packages. If the output in terminal of $ tex -v is the old tex-version, you must add the TeX Live binary directory (and man/info dirs if you want) to your PATH, adding the lines PATH=/usr/local/texlive/2009/bin/x86_64-linux:$PATH; export PATH MANPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/man:$MANPATH; export MANPATH INFOPATH=/usr/local/texlive/2009/texmf/doc/info:$INFOPATH; export INFOPATH in your ~/.bashrc (or ~/.profile) file, *check your real PATH, perhaps it's ../bin/i386-linux for you* (See you http://www.tug.org/texlive/doc/texlive-en/texlive-en.html#x1- 350003.4.3) Then retry the 'tex -v' command and it's being right to texlive-2009 reconfigure and restart LyX. Alternative: as Guenter pointed out, (msg79206) you can try to install the texlive 2009 .deb packages availables for Karmic/Ubuntu in PPA launchpad repositoires https://launchpad.net/~aelmahmoudy/+archive/tl2009 Ignacio García

There was a very simple line in that class file: > *copyrightwanted = @true* > I changed it to false and got what I needed. It is generally a bad idea to change anything in a LaTeX document class file. Many class files have even a license that forbids this. The reason is that the author(s) want to make sure the class works as documented. The common method is to save a copy under a different name and configure it. If you are speaking about the \documentclass{siggraph}, The siggraph Document Class Users’ Guide (found at www.cs.brown.edu/system/software/latex/doc/siggraph.pdf) describes an alternative way: 4.4 Configuration file Individual users or sites may wish to modify the behavior of this class (for instance, to use a particular set of fonts.) Rather than having people hack the .cls file, which can lead to various incompatible versions at different sites, the class provides for a configuration file. After the class has finished loading, it will check to see if a siggraph.cfg file exists in the TEX search path. If so, it will be input. Any user---or site---specific modifications should be placed in this file. (See the copyright notice in the siggraph.dtx source file for information on distribution of configuration files.) Günter

Hi Gunter, Thanks for the information about the configuration file. Its much more useful because now I don't have to worry about version conflicts.. Really appreciate it. How to span a table to two columns?
Hi, I am using a two-column template. While reading a wiki page on tables, it said that in order to span a table into two columns, I had to insert a "Table Wrap Float" and gave a few options which I am not able to find in the latest version. Can someone tell me how to span the table into two columns? Also, is it possible to edit the source of the generated Latex? It shows me the source at the bottom but doesn't let me edit it... Any ideas? Thanks, John
