cmap: searchable and copyable PDFs with pdftex

Hello All.

Maybe this is more a LaTeX-related question, but on the other hand I
think the answer would be useful to many LyX users as well.

I've recently came across CMAP which I though was a perfect solution
to make searchable and copyable PDFs (with \usepackage{cmap})

ftp://tug.ctan.org/pub/tex-archive/macros/latex/contrib/cmap.zip

However, although it _appears_ to work fine, the resulting PDF file is
1) still not searchable and 2) crashes Acrobat 7 (Linux) whenever I
try to copy smth to clipboard.

If I don't use CMAP in preamble, the resulting file is again, not
searchable, and Acrobat copies some garbage to clipboard (this one was
tested on Windows, too).

The questions:

1) does anyone have a successful experience with CMAP and LyX/LaTeX?
2) is there any other way/package to solve the problem?

Many thanks in advance.

PS: I'm using Cyrillic chars (T2A), with the results above. T2A is
stated as supported by CMAP. For purely English chars, Acrobat can
search just fine.

rotated tables doesn't show in dvi

I'm using Lux 1.3.4 on SuSE 9.1 with KDE 3.2.1 and kdvi 1.1. If I rotate 
a table sideways its displays correctly in .ps but not in .dvi. Is it a 
bug in kdvi?


Kghostview is ok but i can't search the text in it.

Is it a bug in kdvi?

There it is! The reason why I want this "configuration" is that the 
three properties are proved on previous slides one by one (each proof 
being slightly different). However, it is useful to interpret Prop. 2 
and Prop 3. together :)

I've attached a modified version of the test file.  Is this what you 
want?  There may be a better way to do this via Beamer customizations. 
I just located the code Beamer uses to typeset the enumeration numbers 
and made an ugly kludge that does two numbers.  Note the new command 
added to the preamble, and the call to \kludge in the optional argument 
to the enumeration.

I use a personal letter template based on koma-letter2.lyx. It prints to-day's
date in the document allright. The problem comes when I display or print an old
letter: the date that shows up is to-day's, when I wish I had saved the date I
wrote it. Any way to achieve that ?
- get to-day's date at writing time
- save this date in the document and keep it there so it appears unmodified
whenever I reprint the document

  The same thing happens in OpenOffice.org, because the insert->date macro
uses the current date rather than a fixed date. Very annoying when I need to
reprint a letter I did not anticipate needing to reprint.

  You can also look at the LaTeX code and use \renewcommand{} to redefine it
for a static date.

You can always look at the file date (assuming that you did not modify
the file since its creation).

Hello,

a most peculiar thing happened to me: I have always been creating PDF 
versions of my documents by clicking the first Export/PDF option in the 
File menu. But now, this does not work as it used to. Well, I do get the 
PDF but its content is different, namely, PSFrag replacements do not work.


I never actually paid attention as to which PDF exporter I'm using; I 
simply clicked the first one (the "it works" approach). :) The first in 
the menu now is: dvipdfm. The third is ps2pdf, which works as expected.


My question is: is the Export menu fully user-configurable? If so, where 
are the items specified? Can I add my own export chain?


I played with LyX 1.4 CVS recently, is it possible that this new version 
affected the Export menu of version 1.3?

Actually, it uses your LC language settings (German in my case). There's 
certainly room for improvement.

You mean the system language settings? Or the language settings of the document?

The system language settings (the string is generated by means of strftime). I 
agree the the latter would be more sensible, although more difficult.

Effectively, in the "File formats" section of the Edit->Preferences dialog.
Here I have "GUI name"s of "PDF", "PDF (pdflatex)" and "PDF (dvipdfm)"
which appear in that order in the View menu.

Sure. Add, modify and remove stuff using the Converters section. One small
UI pain: you must press "Modify" to update the list in the dialog and
thereafter press "Save" or "Apply" to save it or use it in LyX.

That depends whether you configured it as
 configure --with-version-suffix
which results in your local lyx data directory being named as something
unique. On a unix machine I have:

$ ls -ald ~/.lyx* | sed 's/ \{1,\}/ /g' | cut -d' ' -f'9-'
/home/angus/.lyx -> .lyx-1.3.x
/home/angus/.lyx-1.3.x
/home/angus/.lyx-1.4.0cvs -> .lyx-1.4.x
/home/angus/.lyx-1.4.x

where .lyx-1.3.x contains any tweaked support files for LyX 1.3.x, for some
version number X. Etc.

  I cannot address the configurability issue, but I've always used pdflatex
and it's worked flawlessly. If I have PSTricks images in the document, then I
use PDF4 instead of pdflatex. Try these and see if you like the results.

Trouble with ispell

Hi,

I'm using SuSE 9.3 on an AMD64 machine. Normally, I compile LyX from source 
but last time I was a bit lazy and downloded and installed the 1.3.6 binary 
in the LyX ftp site (bin) compiled for SuSE 9.2. Almost everything works 
allright with the exception of spell checking. My normal language for 
spelling is spanish ('espanol' in ispell terms) and I've never had problems 
with this until now. With the mentioned binary, whenever I try to check 
spelling I get a 'No word lists can be found for the language "(espanol)"' 
message. I have ispell and aspell with support for spanish and both work well 
from the command line. I've also tried to instruct LyX to use any of them but 
no luck.

Googlin' arond I've found some messages from people with similar problems and 
they seem to be related with LyX beeing compiled with support for aspell 
instead of ispell (or something like that). Can anybody please throw some 
light into this or, better, point me to an rpm which works in SuSE 9.3?

Does anybody know a solution to get that dot  after the number - without 
moving my cursor back by hand, searching my keyboard, where could that dot be

  No, it's ps4pdf. From :

ps4pdf.sty PostScript into PDF

A package to integrate PostScript code into a PDF output.

  It's analogous to ps2pdf, but it works great with PSTricks figures. In LyX,
it's another converter that's listed in Edit->Preferences->Converters as
LaTeX -- PDF4.

Sometimes, it happens because LyX has a name for the language which
does not match the one of ispell/aspell. Try to check whether both
names match on your computer.

Newbie questions

I am new to lyx, and have been hooked by the concept and potential power of the 
application. I principally would like to use it for (surgical) journal article 
preparation.
I have three questions that will ease the transation away from OpenOffice.

1) How do I get rid of the date that follows the title?

2) In need to change the *subsection font to italics, how is this done?

3) Biblographies. I have used pybliographic to create .bib databases. However, 
changing the order citations in the text upsets the citation numbering within 
the text. I can't find a simple HOWTO on getting the whole bibtext thing going.

Sorry this thread covers a lot of ground. Any pointers would be gratefully 
appreciated.

I hope that is helpful (I can't say I've read it through, as bibliographies 
aren't really involved in what I need LyX for).

\line and justification

Hi, all. This is a reiteration of my previous question. Someone
responded off-list that I should try \newline. Problem with this is that
what I really want is -inline- 'blanks' that don't break justification.
If I'm asking this question in the wrong place, then please, someone let
me know where I can find the answer. 

Slow Display on 1.4cvs

I'm using 1.4cvs (downloaded and compiled a few hours ago) with the Qt
front-end. ATM, I'm noticing that LyX is barely keeping up with my
typing, which is something I hadn't noticed on 1.3.6. Is this just my
imagination, my computer, or are other people experiencing the same
thing?

It's not really a major problem, it's more a minor irritation (certainly
not enough to discourage me from LyX :p).

I discovered that the problem was basically this. I had used Cervisia to
try and download the sources (because CLI cvs scares me :p). I must have
chosen the wrong branch (or just generally screwed up) but now I've used
the CLI cvs commands detailed on the website, I'm fine (and, in fact,
using LyX for Economics homework as I write this).

article AMS and fancy headers

When using article AMS layout and fancy headers, the word "english" is 
printed in the header before the title and my name. Like this:


englishHOME WORK   englishGUILLAUME MARCAIS


Now looking for the word english in the Latex export I get:

$ grep -i english HomeWork.tex
\documentclass[oneside,english]{amsart}

The version of the system and Lyx are as follow:

$ cat /etc/mandrake-release
Mandrakelinux release 10.2 (Limited Edition 2005) for i586
$ rpm -q lyx
lyx-1.3.5-2mdk

The TeX/LaTeX is also the default Mandrake provided installation.

Any ideas how to get ride of this?

Go to Preferences->Output->Date Format and change the string to
%A, %e. %B %Y
(i.e., add a dot after the %e parameter).

For more configuration possibilities, consult man strftime.
