Hello Fritz,
if you are sure about synaptics, then you can simply delete that kernel module. 
But Apple PowerBooks does not use that device driver.

Could you kindly check output of dmesg for OOM? 

PS: In Lubuntu is touchpad being handled by mouseemu service.

Thanks for the reply . . . I'll check into your suggestions in a few days .
. . iBook is now shelved.  I had it stacked higher on a book so it made
typing on it more cumbersome . . . I'll go back to using a lower book or
plugging in a keyboard and see if the problem continues--rather than
messing with the system . . . .
