Is the problem reproducible with a standard Ubuntu PPC ISO ? It doesn't
sound like a specific Lubuntu issue.

Switching to lxdm will not solve all your problems. The look and feel
with lxdm is not a lot better than the current lightdm one.
We can't just switch applications each time we face a bug. Try to open a
proper and unique bug report, with different testing and information, to
help devs to work on the issue. Posting this issues on various and
different bug reports will not help.

There is a page on the wiki for this :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReportingBugs
It may be not perfect, feel free to ask questions about it and improve
it. It should be the reference.

Generally, there are some simple rules to follow :
- Use apport-bug to report bug. Always. If you can't identify the right
package to use, refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/ReportingBugs.
If it doesn't help, ask on IRC ... and complete the page with the answer.
- Don't report bug outside https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/. It means,
don't use project directly https://bugs.launchpad.net/lxadmin or
https://bugs.launchpad.net/lnr)
- If after this checks, you still don't know where to report, use
"apport-bug lubuntu-desktop"
- 1 problem, 1 bug report, never 2 different problems in 1 bug report
- Providing a step-to-reproduce is very useful.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Ubiquity and Casper sprint

2012-03-14 Thread Julien Lavergne
Thanks Phill.

For the record, we have several bugs reported against ubiquity from the
past releases :
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/775124 (or a
way to install Lubuntu on a < 4Gb hard drive).
-
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/775124>https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/830898
(no icon on the panel)

And Paul already reported than there are still many references to
Ubuntu, when ubiquity runs on Lubuntu (which I think, it's because some
parts of ubiquity don't use yet the magic feature from casper to show
the correct name of the derivative :))

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Fwd: [RFC] Drop Non-smp PowerPC Kernel Flavor

If I understand right, smp is compatible with the same hardware than
non-smp, with a very little performance impact. So I can't see any
problem if they drop the non-smp flavour.

If nobody have concern in the PPC tester community, let's them drop
this. I think they know what they are doing in this case :)

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Xubuntu reverting to non-pae kernel?

2012-03-17 Thread Julien Lavergne
I saw it also, and still thinking about it. My point to keep pae by default was
because nobody else done the same. I didn't want to maintain this exception
only for us, and to give work to people only for this.

Since Xubuntu switch to non-pae by default, and the change to do it for us is
very small, I am starting to think that we should do the same. Or, I can't see
any point to not switch to non-pae by default.

The same than Ubuntu, using update-manager / update-notifier. However, I
think that on not-released-yet system, the daily check may be not enable
yet.

mobile-broadband-provider-info
network-manager-pptp

Please try with those ones and report back if it's working.

indicator applet in lxpanel, reboot, and try again ?

Try to install indicator-application-gtk2, reboot, and see if it's
change something.
If something appears, try to change back to Lubuntu icon theme.

Definitely, a lits of files with different codecs / resolutions /
extension, with open / free content. That could be very useful for
testing video and audio player for regression.

[Lubuntu-qa] ISO Testing so far

2012-04-19 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

I took some time to test the ISO, pretty good so far :-)

The bugs I have so far which are "critical" (mean, it can fail the
installation in some cases)
* Bug:985874 : Hardware related, or related to the partitions I have on
my system (not able to reproduce it on Virtualbox). And it's only when
using French (English OK)
* Bug:985919 : Easy to reproduce, just remove your network card on
virtualbox, and try to install :-)

I have also cosmetic bugs, but I'll do a list later. There are not
blocker for the installation, so it's less important right now.

Hope it's going well for you and your testing :-) Let me know if you
have other blocker bugs, tomorrow it's the last meeting of the release
team, I can advertise people about them at this moment.

Julien Lavergne

Please only mention crashes which are confirmed by at least 1 more
person than the report. Bugs on the releases notes are only for issues
with an important impact on many users. Having too much bugs on the
release notes will result with a feeling that Lubuntu is unstable for
everyone, which is not the case.

Please note that we support mainly lubuntu-core + lightdm +
network-manager, because we used them on the Desktop ISO. Of course
using lxdm + wicd is supposed to work, but we didn't test it very well
during the cycle.

You are lucky :) I tried on Virtualbox with 384 Mb and it crashed during
the installation. I think we can mention that using live ISO is safe on
512 Mb, but may work under less memory. If there is any problems, people
should use alternate ISO.

You can check http://pad.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-release for rebuild status
(just be sure to NOT edit anything). I'm afraid there will be some other

It appears to be hardware specific, we need someone with the same
hardware than the reporter (P4 I think) to double check the bug. I can
try to prepare a fix, but I need someone to test it :-)

Great, an update should appear if you are using Lubuntu Staging PPA,
could you test it and see if it's working now ?

Also, according to my researches, it may also affect powerpc users with
G4. Did anyone with this hardware have a problem playing anything with
gnome-mplayer (with mplayer2 installed) ?

Thanks for the test. So it's worst that I expected, and probably can't
be fixed for the release. Let's add it to the release notes, and try to
fix it after the release.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] [Lubuntu-wiki-docs] System Requirements

2012-04-22 Thread Julien Lavergne
Please just keep in mind that the requirement we need to put on the
release notes are the ones for a default lubuntu desktop session (the
one installed with an alternate or a live ISO). If you want to add other
systems requirement with different ways to install, please put them on a
different page.

Release notes should be as short as possible, with only important facts,
and additional links if you want to add more details.

Finally, please be sure to have all the information up-to-date on the
release notes wiki page on Monday.

Thanks for all your help on this :)

Well, you extended what I said. My concern was on the way the "physical
ressources" (I mean money, hardware etc ...) are handle. Mario found
funding to host lubuntu.net, and some people of the community wanted to
hijack it from him. I considered it unfair, and not realistic. I never
talk about the content of the website, which was (I think), decided in a
democratic way.

I think you are really unfair, I always try to publicly communicate on
what I do, why I want to do, and to listen people. In this case, I have
to handle a conclict between 2 sides. Of course, 1 side will be
disagree, I can't avoid it. Add to this that this discussion was near
final freeze, time when I really stressful, and you have this type of
answer, which I agree, is a bit rough.

I maintain that, even in Free Software, it's not always a democraty.
Look at all big projects, there are rules, release managers, deadline
... Look at the Linux project, Linus Torvalds have a huge power, not
everyone have the right to push changes to the kernel ... Still, I think
we are trying to be have democratic as we can.

If you are disagree with the way the project is handle, you can ask for
a discussion on the mailing list. I can resign from my dictatorship hat,
and focus on my dev hat (I join the project for this at the beginning)
for the time of the discussion, the way we have to handle the governance
of the project.

If your point is only the way the lubuntu.net is hosted, this is another
topic. We can discuss moving the hosting to someone else, but it has to
be on a dedicated topic on the mailing list, to avoid confusion with the
content of the website, and let all people explain themselves.

I hope I clarify my point of view.

If I missed the part where you offered an alternative for lubuntu.net,
so ok it's my fault. For me, only the content of the website was
discussed, not the way it's hosted. The decision we made was on the
actual hosting, not a possible other way to do it. As I said, such topic
should be a different topic on the mailing.

[Lubuntu-qa] Number of alternate ISOs for 12.10

2012-06-02 Thread Julien Lavergne

Hi,

Maybe your are aware that Ubuntu want to remove alternate ISO for 12.10.
If this happen, it will be a good time to ask us how many alternate ISO
we want to test / release.

I think the i386 alternate is mandatory, for people not able to run
Ubiquity. However, I wonder if the amd64 and the powerpc alternate are
useful.

For amd64, IMO if people can run 64 bits, they should have enough memory
to run Ubiquity.

I'm not sure about powerpc, is all powerpc hardware are able to run
Ubiquity ?

If there is no concern, I'm for removing the 2 alternate from the tests,
so we can all focus on images which are more useful.

Do you have any opinions about this, since you are the ones who actually
do the ISO testing ?

Probably not for Alpha 1, last update of firefox still not build on powerpc.

Alpha 1 is supposed to "just" boot and install properly (no crash,
system usable ...). So, IMO we should not block the release for this.
But, if you consider it serious enough, we can not release powerpc ISO
for A1.

[Lubuntu-qa] Participation in the milestones (Alpha ISO testing)

Hi,

By default, when the release team ask for the participation or no of
Lubuntu in the Alpha ISO testing process, I always said that we will
participate, because you usually do testing on daily and milestone ISO.
However, before the testing beginning, if you don't feel it will be
possible to perform such tests on the milestone ISO, please warm me as
soon as possible, so I'll see if we can drop the testing for this
milestone. It's better to drop a milestone that releasing something half
tested.

Thanks.

Just need to check if it's really fix the issue :-)

Updates are in progress, they should be in the daily tomorrow, or the
day after. Expect some oversizes, but I'll monitor the ISO next week to
fix them.

Lxsession's update will be hold back during a few days, it should hit
the repositories next week.

Well, I'll prefer an opt-in process, as some people on this list doesn't

The question that you should ask is : If there is any hardware using
powerpc which not support installation with the desktop ISO ? On other
architectures, we keep an alternate ISO because we can't install Lubuntu
on some hardware (usually, when there is few RAM or disk space). If it's
not the case for powerpc, maybe we can drop the alternate ?

It only concerns Ubuntu ISO. I already told people at the release
meeting that Lubuntu will keep alternate ISO. No worry :-)
The question is more, how many alternate do we need. I already asked on
this mailing list, and people wanted to keep them all (amd64, i386, and
powerpc).

Something that could help to keep bugs in the radar is a way to
"forward" bugs over milestones. For example, if a bug is found and
reported on the isotracker for alpha 1, it should be by default
forwarded to alpha 2 on the isotracker (if it's not with the status "Fix
Released").

Another solution is to use the
http://reports.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/rls-mgr/rls-q-tracking-bug-tasks.html
<http://reports.qa.ubuntu.com/reports/rls-mgr/rls-q-tracking-bug-tasks.html#>
but I need a refresh on how you can subscribe bugs to it (previously, it
was a tag, it seems to have changed recently).

Just an idea :-)

FYI, the fontconfig alerts are tracked on

IMO, it's harmless, so you should look at another place to find the real

Updating xserver-xorg-video-openchrome package to 0.3.1 upstream release
should fix the problem (according to upstream), someone from Ubuntu
desktop of X team should be able to update it. Not sure it's feasible

Just for your information, some testcases was already written on
http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Applications (see LXDE / Lubuntu).

I also have several ideas of testcases that could be useful for us,
maybe only run once when doing the test of the ISO :
- Testing with a system with low RAM
- Testing with a system with low space available
- Testing update the language support post-installation
- ...

Having a brainstorming at UDS for this may be useful :-)

[Lubuntu-qa] Call for testing : pcmanfm 1.0.1

Hi,

I just uploaded a new version of pcmanfm (with corresponding libfm), in
the Lubuntu Dev PPA staging
(https://launchpad.net/~lubuntu-dev/+archive/staging). It should fixes a
bunch of problems with the current pcmanfm. But to include it in 12.10,
we need to test it and to check if it doesn't bring any regressions. I
would appreciate if people can update their version, reboot and test it
(stress it if possible :-)). Please report any problems you have with
this version, so I can have a better view of its state before deciding

It's not auto-started on purpose, because it's too heavy (memory) by

Also, if you edit the file in /etc/xdg/autostart and remove the

[Lubuntu-qa] Final testing for Lubuntu 12.10

2012-10-11 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

In 1 week, it will be release day. No need to hide it, it will come very
quickly :-)

For this last testing, we have, as usual, all the ISO to test. But we
need also to produce the release notes, with the list of known issues.
That's why I would like to keep all the bugs reported during the tests
on ISO on the iso tracker
(http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/240/builds). So, please
make sure if you find something on the ISO, report it in your testing
report. It will make possible to quickly list the list of issues we
have. Also please use the "critical" state (the red bugs) only if you
consider as a blocker, so I can check it as quickly as I can. We will
have to decide quickly what bugs are blockers, or can be fixed later in
the release (SRU), or need to be mention in the release notes.

Final ISO will shortly pop-up, with a first respin planned, so no rush
on testing yet, but you can still play with the ISO. As usual,
information about respin are on http://pad.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-release.

I will try to be connected on IRC as much as I can, so don't hesitate to
ping me for any issue.

Thanks in advance for your help, and good luck for this final week !

Do we have a list of bug reports about the PPC issues, with a list of

I still wonder if it can be done using the netboot PPC version instead
of the alternate ? I'm still think we don't need alternate images (which
double the time of testing during ISO testing time), and it can be
replaced by using the netboot image.

Nothing was decide about it, I just thinking about it :-) I also feel
bad to see how much testing who guys need to do around release time. I
know you can do it (you already did), but it's not because we can do it,
that we have to do it. We may focus our time on testing more stuff on
the remaining ISOs.

It's one of the subject I would like to talk during UDS. So, if you have
any comments, please share with us :-)

There is still a real bug, it should fallback to pcmanfm when it's
available.
For the additional customization provided by the script, I need to test
it "in real world", to see how it beware.

[Lubuntu-qa] Dropping Alphas for raring cycle

2012-10-30 Thread Julien Lavergne

Hi,

As you may know, Alphas will be dropped for Ubuntu ISOs, and it's up to
the flavors to decide if they want to keep the Alphas or not. Instead,
it will be replace by a cadence testing, meaning we can be free to
organize the daily testing, and only have Beta 1, Beta 2 and Final
release with the classic process. Personnaly, I think it's a good idea,
since Alpha are basicly a snapshot of the current developpement with a
bit more testing.

As you are the people who do the actual testing, what do you think about
it ?

Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Well, it doesn't stop us to do milestones, and tick a specific daily as
"Good to use as an Alpha, but it's not a real Alpha". Alpha release is
IMO a heavy process for the benefit. We can also do a more detailed
schedule with "drop points", when features will land, instead of doing
an Alpha with on blocked date.

There are "features" updates, but it's tricky. Both Firefox and Chromium
do release with include both security updates, and features updates. In
this case, you can't just take the security items and package them, you
are forced to do the entire update. That's why new versions of Firefox

the SRU process.

You know much more about this area, are CVE updates normal SRU's or
security team driven?
Security updates are driven by the security team, but it's only for
packages in main. In universe (for example, Chromium), they do what they
can (no guaranty).

[Lubuntu-qa] ISO size warning

2012-11-11 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

Just to ask you a favor :-) For the next cyle, we will try to make any
daily ISO usable. For this, we need to have a good size for the ISO (<
700 Mb), especially for powerpc. As I will not monitor the size of the
ISOs each day, please if you see any oversized ISO when you do your
testing, please ping me on IRC. Size of the ISO is easy to fix when I
have the info, so please don't hesitate to ping me so I can quickly fix it.

[Lubuntu-qa] Schedule proposal

2012-11-11 Thread Julien Lavergne
Hi,

Ubuntu will change a bit their release schedule, with no more Alphas and
Betas, and a Feature Freeze later. You can see the complete schedule on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RaringRingtail/ReleaseSchedule

We need to adjust our schedule to the new deadlines for this release.
The drop of alphas is not mandatory, but I still consider it as too much
extra work for the benefit of them. Instead, I propose to have 2 Betas
(after Feature Freeze, and after UI Freeze), with the following schedule :

 * Nov 1 : UDS
 * Nov 22 : Decision for applications by default
 * Nov 22 : Feature Definition Freeze (blueprint freeze)
 * Feb 7 : Ping all upstream for releases
 * Feb 14 : Debian Import Freeze
 * Feb 28 : 1st release of artwork
 * Feb 28 : 1st release of the slideshow
 * Feb 28 : Feature complete release of lubuntu-default-settings,
lubuntu-artwork, lubuntu-meta
 * Mar 7 : Feature freeze
 * Mar 14 : Beta 1
 * Mar 14 : Final release of the artwork
 * Mar 14 : Final release of the slideshow
 * Mar 21 : UI Freeze
 * Mar 28 : Beta 2
 * Apr 4 : Final check / ping to upstream for point release
 * Apr 11 : Final release (bug fixes) of lubuntu-default-settings,
lubuntu-artwork, lubuntu-meta
 * Apr 11 : Final round of bug fixes releases
 * Apr 18 : Final Freeze  - RC
 * Apr 25 : 13.04

I'll appreciate any comment about it. It would be nice if we can make it
official by the end of next week.

Julien Lavergne

Probably, but I'm not very good for scripting :-)
But the goal is not to manually monitor it, just to warn me if people

I already removed all the languages supports, and it's still oversized.
I suspect there is something wrong with the size of the new PPC
kernel(s) since raring.

Until it's fixed, you can still use the alternate ISO.

Currently, I think it's a bug somewhere between the way the desktop ISO
is done, and the new "format" of powerpc kernel (there several new
binaries since 13.04), since alternate is not affected. I need to raise
and document a bug about it.

In the meantime, I can cut-off some applications not essential to reduce
the size of the ISO. But it will also remove by default those
applications for all installations (not only the desktop ISO).

Just to make a quick a update, there is no change in schedule [1]
since the beginning of this cycle. We will push to have a Beta 1, and
a Beta 2, and a 13.04 release.

There is a lot of change ongoing on Canonical side. I'm still in the
process to analyse them and try to find the best way to adapt to this
new direction. But the priority is 13.04, we need to keep this in
mind.

I can't talk for Ubuntu, but for Lubuntu we are going to release 13.04, as
most of the flavors will do. When I do a schedule, I like to stay on track
during all the schedule. We decided 6 month ago to do a 13.04, I consider
we have to do this release. What Canonical want to do with their flavor
(Ubuntu) is their problem, not our.

I hope I answered your question. We will still have a lot of discussions
after 13.04 to see how we will handle the new model of development proposed
by Canonical, but let release this version first :-)
