Hi Federico,

I have uploaded a tarball of Lubuntu 13.10 OEM to phillw.net now. The
uploading was quite fast. Let me know if your download speed is good
enough, or if I need to upload it to my google drive account too!

md5sum:
973b776baaf9ef45989b49b3ad748eab
tarballs/Lubuntu_13.10oem-oct28-testing.tar.xz

Good luck testing it :-)

Best regards
Nio

Good morning Nio,

this time the download was fast enough, 1MB/s.
Will test today ASAP.

Nio,

I ended now my test on Lubuntu_13.10oem-oct28-testing.tar.xz.
Installation was done on the oldest notebook I have, Dell C400 P3 866
with 768mb ram and was completed in less than 15 min via USB 1.1.
On reboot I've found the classic icon for oem setup and all went well.

Test I have done:
- Reboot to close OEM procedure
- Configuration of the system locale, language and keyboard for my needs;
- Installation of drivers for Broadcom wifi card (b43), various
programs using synaptic and software center, download of Chrome via
Firefox.;
- apt update and upgrade
- generic testing

My obs:
1. When I've installed the old tarball of 13.10
(Lubuntu_13.10oct18.tar.xz) I was pleasantly surprised that my intel
integrated (i830 running on i915 drv) worked out of the box without
blank screen or system freeze. Installing he new tarball
Lubuntu_13.10oem-oct28-testing.tar.xz I'm back to reality: you put a
configured xorg.conf on /etc/X11/ folder to use the UXA accelmethod,
the same I use. Anyway this configuration isn't present on the new
tarball so it's just a simple annotation.

2. On first reboot there are some words not translated in English but
are in Swedish, your natural language I suppose. Look at the day on
the clock to see what I mean. Starting to create the tarball from a
pure English install will solve it. :)

3. Oem setup is ready but we need to analyze the situation here... Am
I the end user or the OEM?
I know, kind of confusing but let me explain:
If I am the end user what I need is just the final configuration, like
when I turn on from the very first time a new Windows installed by OEM
(Dell, HP, Acer...). Need to choose language if available and personal
preference and I'll be ready to use my computer.
If on the other hand I am the OEM then your tarball is ready, I can
configure or add all I need then close the procedure and ship the
machine ready to start with the final step.

Last thing: did you changed the background on
lightdm-gtk-greeter.conf? The default should be
1310-lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png but strangely is
lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png.

Let me know what you think.

That's right. I can add it, if you think it will not destroy the
graphics for some other graphics card.

Good catch. I'd never notice that. As a matter of fact, I started with
English, but the installer found automatically my time zone ... Maybe I
have to ask someone in England of the United States to make the tarball
according to my recipe ;-)

Well, I'll change the time zone manually and see if that will remove the
glitch.

I think I understand, but I don't know if it would be a good idea to
make it completely end-user ready by clicking on the button in the top
left corner before making the tarball. Would you suggest that I do? Or
that there are two versions; the current one for OEM tweaks, and a
completely end-user ready version?

I selected the blue wooden wall. (I used the same name of the symbolic
link, but it is pointing to another file.) Do you suggest, that I should
use the default image?

Quick reply without quote:

1. Better leave the xorg config completely automated. I fear it will
cause troubles on system with different GPU .
2. Try to force another geo location or install without network up.
3. I'm on the dark side of OEM. I prefer tarball as is but it's a
thing that we need to analyze more deeply in the future.

The wallpaper story let me think on customization, I mean, you added
some goodies to your tarball on the past like htop or ubuntu tweak. If
yours tarball are aimed for a specific target you can put what you
want. If you want to share a "pure" *ubuntu then you need to stay to
stock. Your call.

OK, so without UXA. Maybe I can supply a text file with the template in
the home directory of the OEM user.

Yes.

Well, do you think it is hard for end users to understand, that they
should click on that button at the top left corner of the desktop? And
would it be worth providing two versions?

> The wallpaper story let me think on customization, I mean, you added

I chose to add some improvements that I prefer to use. One reason is
that there is no limit set by the size of the iso file to fit on a CD,
so it does not cost much to add a few packages and tweaks. Here is a
list of what I added.

*Everybody: Please give feedback about these tweaks*

OEM
TT alias touchpad-toggle
alias rm='rm -i'
the grub menu is shown (not hidden in a single boot system)
lxterminal in autostart (for the OEM user)
changed permissions of /media/oem to improve access to automounted
devices (for the OEM user)
alias l='ls -l' (for the OEM user)
template in fstab to uncomment for floppy
htop
fake-PAE
wooden-wall (changed default background)
ubuntu-tweak
lubuntu-restricted-extras
pulseaudio
pavucontrol

If there is an opinion to provide a pure Lubuntu 13.10 system without
tweaks (only the OEM feature), I will make such a system.

By the way, I have also considered providing a Lubuntu tarball with
xubuntu-desktop installed, so a Lubuntu-Xubuntu tarball.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] One Button Installer improved with dialog menus and xz compression

2013-10-29 Thread Federico Leoni
Well Nio, you put a lot of questions for a project born to be a
super-simple installer that is already working fine. This means, at
least for me, that we are ready to enter into phase two of the
project. Good.

Using the xorg.conf is not a good idea because is obsolete but can
override a configuration without problems. Nvidia drivers are still
using it. Anyway putting the UXA setting on a xorg.conf on a machine
with Nvidia GPU seems to not harm the system. Would be interesting if
someone from the dev team gave infos about it.

As already told you the OEM point is more complicated. Try to think as
the end user, even if average: you installed with OBI the system and
after a reboot you don't see your distro up and running but you stand
in front of a desktop with a terminal window, and you don't know why
because there isn't instruction for this. You need to click an icon
then reboot again, assuming you will not configure more deeply, to
start the real configuration of the machine. Ok, if you have create
yourself the OBI drive then you probably know what your are doing, but
keep it simple is always a good thing. Put on startup for OEM user
leafpad opening a text file with simples instruction will help for
sure.
Again I prefer the tarball as is now, but you know, an user coming
from XP might be scared because he is not prepared to work on a
terminal. This kind of persons are my target, I want to let them
discover the new environment slowly. My opinion, obviously.
Providing two version of OEM setup would be dispersive, but again it's
up to you.

Even if I prefer standard install, I like the customization you did,
especially, lubuntu-restricted-extras, pulseaudio, pavucontrol.
Normally I add them myself.
Alias are good but the simple user will never use them.
I didn't liked the grub setup, I prefer it hidden when just on single boot.
The wallpaper is the unique visual customization you made, I prefer
the stock one, expecially on lightdm.

Have a pure Lubuntu OEM will be the natural step to follow when OBI
will become more popular.

Speaking of xfce desktop I'm interested in testing it on such an old
machine. Let me know.

I think this convinced me to make the system ready for the end user
(skipping the oem-stage).

Would there still be a need for an open text file with simple
instructions? In that case, what instructions?

I made grub visible because it makes it easier to add boot options, if
necessary for the boot to complete successfully. But it is ugly and it
is a tweak, so not pure Lubuntu.

The wallpaper could make the pure Lubuntu and the tweaked version
different visually.

If you skip the oem-stage then no instructions are needed. The OEM
installer is easy to follow.

think I'll install Xfce desktop on Lubuntu 13.10 just to see how it
runs on such an old machine. You know, watch competitors is always a
