[Lubuntu-qa] PPC - Ran out of space on /boot -- is this a bug?

2013-04-16 Thread Charlie Ford
I'm not sure if this is a bug or not, but I'm not doing anything specific
with having extra kernels or custom kernels, but by just doing updates like
normal I've ran out of space. I manually removed unnecessary kernels to
free up space. Could this be a bug in the installer? Not giving enough room
to kernel space?

current ppc build, 14" iBook G4

Thanks folks!

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] PPC - Ran out of space on /boot -- is this a bug?

2013-04-16 Thread Phill Whiteside
Hi,

one of the things that grub-legacy can do is limit the number of old
kernels it keeps around. I've not seen this functionality in grub-2 and I
manually remove the old kernel entries. I'm not sure if one of the "tweak"
utilities can do this more easily.

Phill.

wxl,

The latest:
iMac G3 600 - 4.1.9
This USB boots Raring ISO fine. Using boot usb1/disk@1,2\\yaboot or boot
/pci@f200/usb@19/disk@1:2,\\yaboot . (On this machine alias usb0 is
bottom/lower port, usb1 is top/upper port.)

PowerMac G5 1.6 - 5.1.5 f2
It seems the paths changed in the later G5 firmware. I can see the disk at
something like /ht@0,f200/pci@4/usb@1,b/disk@1 but haven't figured out a
way to get to it. :(

For now, I will work on booting FireWire hard disk. Will be faster for ISO
testing purposes anyway and I don't have any DVD-RW handy.

Also after some searching, the "wrong partition error" I mentioned is
apparently common and nothing to worry about.

Thanks,
Str8

I need to put this on the wiki but the fact is Open Firmware is buggy and
inconsistent. There are some generalities, though. What version is being used
on these machines?

Anyone have success on this hardware? I know the DD'd usb stick is good because

Alternatively, If I DD a testing ISO to an SATA hard drive using the same
method for USB, I should be able to boot that via Firewire?

This is a Raring daily I'm testing. Haven't gone back to earlier ISO's to see
if they were any different. I do see an error when booting the G3 that I don't
recall seeing before, but still boots and installs fine. From memory,
something like: "Wrong partition map. Apple_HFS should be ApplePartitionMap"

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] [ppc] Re: Was lubuntu/daily/ size larger than stated Now netboot testcase

2013-04-16 Thread Str8bs
Phil,

I realize you weren't asking me, but the "install grub boot loader" step
doesn't currently apply.
(yet? Fedora is moving to grub2 on PPC. :) I'm NOT attempting to open that can
of worms. :) )
I expect most PPC users are aware of yaboot vs. grub anyway.

? It may be useful for some to add as optional tests PXE Boot (from the
network) and Desktop similar to AMD64 cases 1504 and 1501?
I can confirm minimal install succeeds both from tftp boot(from the network)
and booting the mini.iso directly on last week's ISO(228) on 32bit PPC.
I plan to retest current 32 and 64 bit over the coming weekend.

I did recently do some tweaking on the test cases, can you check to see if test
case 1499 is correct for mini-iso / netboot for the ppc image (I know the text
states 1386/amd64)

so first off, you gotta check the wiki, as two possible solutions exists there:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ#The_iso_is_too_big_for_a_CD.2C_what_can_I_do.3F
the mini is technically not compatible with the testcase, but maybe we should
consider rewriting the testcase to deal with this since it seems to happen far
too often for words.

711 ain't standard. you may be mistaken about the actual capacity of your disk:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CD-ROM#Capacity

> If anyone in the ppc world knows how to circumvent the ppc USB boot problem
the bummer is that there is no such thing as "the" ppc USB boot problem. there
are many and they're very inconsistent. openfirmware is so buggy it's not even
funny. anyways, you're not alone in this problem and there's pretty much
nothing you can do.

keep on trying, though! i'm still bent on getting my g3 going even though i
can't get the bloody thing to boot a darn cd let alone usb. i will beat open
firmware. and when i do, the whole world will know. anyways, just keep doing
the best you can. we all appreciate it!

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] ppc USB boot

2013-04-16 Thread Str8bs
Prairie Zephyr,

I speculate many USB PPC boot troubles come from confusion because of two
factors:
1. default devalias names change across different firmware versions and
later versions include the disk in the alias path.
(IE: usb@1/disk@1:2 vs UD:2, etc. ) Some don't even have an alias for the
USB unless you create it yourself.
2. Depending on how the stick was formatted before the DD, there can be
trouble finding the "blessed" partition.

I theorize the process could possibly be simplified with an instruction set
that focused on using the full open firmware and file paths.
This would mean a longer boot command for the end user, but fewer steps to
get there and a more "universal" approach.
If you are still interested in attempting a Wiki, I can outline the steps
and take some Open Firmware screenshots to better illustrate what I mean.
(I'm terrible at instruction documentation.)

Maybe we could then get some people to test the instruction set to see if it
is valid?

Str8

I've done lots of firewire target mac installing (saved me a couple
of times) but got nowhere aiming Linux ISOs at mounted FW targets trying
from OSX Mtn Lion, getting less Unix all the time.
G4/5 = Leopard-max / G3 Tiger-max, ppc needs Linux or die. These ATI
cards are useless for video but 1.42 & 1.25 GHz are still half-decent
machines, G5s can still do some heavy lifting. My G3 is more like toy
status; I just reinstalled OS9 after a LVM install claimed ownership: what a
blast from the past! (y2k) lol All this info gives me incentive to try
again to get the DVD-less testing, do what I can to keep ppc demand for
distros alive - wish I'd gotten the 13.04 radeon cards tested in time to
file better bug reports ...next time, thanks again

[Lubuntu-qa] New upgrade test - via live image

2013-04-16 Thread Lance
Just to catch everyone up on the basics; beginning with Maverick ubiquity began
offering an upgrade path that's quite different than both the standard upgrade
via the update-mangler or via the alternate image.

Basically, based on my own experience, this option will only be offered if you
have only one Ubuntu based distro installed. So if you're multi-booting two or
more Ubuntu based distros (like Xubuntu and Lubuntu) you'll never see it, but I
have still seen the option if I'm dual-booting with either Windows or Fedora.

Anyway if you look at Upgrade Lubuntu on the QA Tracker you'll now see two
tests:

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/243/builds/41978/testcases

The one that's called "Upgrade (image)" is the one I'm talking about ;^)

So what's the problem?

Well, having it lumped into standard upgrade testing you first see this page
where it says, "This build is valid for a week, starting on 2013/04/12 at 21:00
UTC and finishing on 2013/04/19 at 21:00 UTC.":

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/243/builds/41978/testcases/1498/results

You can of course read more on the testcase specific page:

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/testcases/1498/info

So I'm thinking that this live-image upgrade test should actually be moved from
the "Upgrade Lubuntu" section to the Desktop images tests but I'm
just thinking out loud ATM.

That's why I'm not filing a bug against the tracker, I felt it best to have an
open discussion before doing so. Particularly since this is something rather
new to most testers.

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] New upgrade test - via live image

2013-04-16 Thread Lance
Just thought to add;

If we move it to the desktop image testing it should possibly be "optional"
rather than "mandatory".

But my original point, which I did a poor job of explaining, is that upgrading
via the live image is very much dependent on the date the image was produced
rather than a "weekly" cycle :^)

[Lubuntu-qa] alternate w/o network incorrectly configuring mirrors

2013-04-16 Thread
a week or so ago i did an alternate install with no network. it carried on like
normal and i had no problems.

today, using 20130416, selecting the option to not configure the network at
this time leads to the installer asking to select a mirror. if a mirror is
selected, it then attempts to connect to it, which fails. game over.

did something change? i can't imagine so because i can install desktop without
a network.

it sure would be ideal to not have it be this way. not everyone has access to
ethernet and those that don't can't always access wifi readily (read: b43).
busybox (alternate's shell) doesn't have the capacity a standard shell would
and so it's difficult to get around this latter issue, for example.

any thoughts?

getting it going and balloons has been kind in offering help. since i managed
to succeed, he asked me to post it up on the list for everyone else.

so first, format with gparted or parted if you prefer. don't bother with
gnome-disks. consistently problematic.

then open it up in unetbootin. usb-creator does something it doesn't: calculate
the maximum amount of persistence space, but it doesn't tend to work, so forget
about it. that being said, when you set your persistence amount, make sure to
be careful about the size of the iso and the size of the disk.

beyond that, if you have trouble booting it, look in bios for a hard drive boot
option. my usb was listed there and i just needed to prioritize it ahead of the
actual hdd. it also tends to forget its setting, which is annoying, but i
digress…

lastly, the unetbootin boot menu comes up pretty darn quick when booting the
drive, but it takes a good long while to get the desktop loaded. don't sweat it.

hope that helps someone!

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] reliably get persistence to work

It would be nice if there were and easy way to set up persistence from
within the Live CD session itself. Can that be done?
