Hi all, Daniel Holbach and an awesome group of other community members have been doing their usual awesome stuff and have now the LoCo directory [1] up and running. Call for LoCo stories
Hi everybody, Last week I restarted the of LoCo story series on The Fridge. With these we want to raise awareness of the awesome work our LoCos do, both as a showcase of the particular teams and of the Ubuntu community as a whole. The idea is to publish periodic articles featuring a LoCo team and some of the awesome work they've done, be it a release party, a meeting, an installfest, charity work, advocacy, participation in an OSS event, or whatever you might have done and you feel particulary proud of as a LoCo. It does not have to be a current event or activity - you can tell me about the rocking release party you had several months ago, for example. I'm sure you all have stories to tell, and I'm really looking forward to letting our amazing community know about them. So please, let me hear your stories: just e-mail me with some facts, a picture and I'll take care of writing the article. Please let your LoCo teams know about this e-mail, so that anyone member can point me to their stories. Thanks a lot! The idea is that if there is someone wanting to ask a question at a session but does not feel comfortable enough writing in English, he or she can direct it to one of the native speakers listed there and they will be able to help him/her by translating it to English. For those helping with translating it shouldn't be much work, as these questions are occasional and you might be hanging in the channel anyway, but for those people asking the questions it will make a world of difference. Call for translations
Hi all, == Loco Team Reapproval == As part of the awesome job the LoCo council are doing on this cycle, they've completed the document which defines how approved LoCo teams will be assessed for re approval after 2 years [1]. While we use English as a means of communication in our global community, LoCos use a multitude of languages according to their region or cultural background. As such, we'd like that every LoCo member could know about this process in his or her own language, so I'd like to ask you to translate the document to your own: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoCouncil/LoCoTeamReApproval Here's how it goes: simply copy the original English text of the page to a subpage named as your language code (*) and translate it. Then add a link to the translation on the table on top of the original English page and you're done! Have a look at the comments in the wiki page for more information, or also at the current Catalan translation in there. == Translations Test Cases == The Translations and QA team are working on a set of test cases to improve the quality of translations [1]. One of these test cases deals with input methods to type complex characters with a conventional keyboard, and in particular it focuses on the Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages (CJK). We'd like the test case to be easy and general, so that everyone can run it, not only those who speak the language. Therefore, we'd like to provide translations for the button/textbox/option descriptions mentioned in the test case, so that non CJK speakers can recognise them as well. At this point, I'd like to call for Chinese, Japanese and Korean speakers to translate those actions marked in bold in the same way they are translated during the install at: http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/Install/NonEnglishLanguage#Installation%20Full%20Network%20Support%20&%20CJK%20Input You can see how it goes by looking at the Simplified Chinese translations, which have already been done, but it works like this. Testing translations
Hi all, I've just announced a call for testing translations during installation on Lucid. You'll find all the details here [1]. I'd like to ask for your help on this, and to forward it to your LoCos as well. Everyone can test language support without the need of being a translator. You can even help testing other languages, since in some of the test cases [2] all of the text is translated. LoCo Council page translations
Hi all, I've been working with Laura Czajkowski to set up the main LoCo Council page for translations on the wiki, and I'm pleased to announce that you can start translating it to your own language, so that it is also useful for everyone in your LoCo whose mother tongue is not English: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LoCoCouncil The LoCo Council is at the heart of the governance of the Ubuntu LoCo community, and with such a diverse community as ours, it just makes sense to reflect this diversity in a set of translations for everyone. The LoCo Directory wants to speak your language
Hi translators, The Loco Directory hackers have asked for some more help in getting the directory translated and thus more usable for your LoCo. You can contribute to it the usual way by going to: https://translations.launchpad.net/loco-directory And leaving your suggestions or translations. We've got 7 languages which are nearly completed, and it would really be awesome if also Catalan, Finnish, French, Czech, Asturian, Serbian, Bengali, Greek, Ukrainian, Russian, Romanian, English (United Kingdom), Dutch, Swedish, Galician, Hebrew, Chinese (Traditional), Chinese (Simplified), Vietnamese, Irish, Thai, Arabic, Tamil, Turkish, Welsh, Portuguese, Slovak, Polish, Persian, Danish, Belarusian, and more! would get some translation love. Internationalization of Launchpad Answers
Hi all, For this UDS, I've drafted a blueprint for a session to discuss the internationalization of the Launchpad Answers UI [1]. From the summary: "We'd like to have an open discussion about the scope of work and the steps involved in enabling internationalization and localization of the Launchpad Answers application's web UI. This is a feature that has been requested multiple times by LoCo teams. It is not in the current Launchpad Roadmap, but we'd welcome and help anyone willing to implement it and enable everyone to use the Answers UI in their own language. This effort could then be used as the ground work to internationalize other Launchpad apps, such as Translations." This is also not something that will be on the Roadmap from the Community team for next cycle, unless someone steps up to lead this effort. For now, I'd like to kick off the discussion to define the scope of work and the details of an implementation, and welcome any interested community members willing to participate. Translatable Code of Conduct (CoC) and Leadership Code of Conduct (LCoC)
Hi all, I just wanted to let you know about the blueprint I've just drafted for a UDS session to discuss an effort to make the Ubuntu Code of Conduct (CoC) and Leadership Code of Conduct translatable [1]. From the summary: "We want to provide the Code of Conduct (CoC) and the Leadership Code of Conduct (LCoC) in anyone's own language, and we want to enable the community to translate it. We'd like to discuss the steps needed to make this possible and to find people intersted in contributing to this goal [...]" I want to be clear on this: this is an objective I'm very excited about, but due to other projects already in our Roadmap [2], I will probably not have the time to work on it this cycle. Nevertheless, I think we should have the discussion at UDS. I'll be glad to help anyone wanting to participate, and it would be even more awesome if someone would be willing to lead this effort. Thanks a lot for your input.
If I understand you correctly, I believe you are referring to the
creation of a global glossary for translation terms.
I personally think that this is something that every team should take
care of, and it is something that we recommend to be in their
translation guidelines [1], as only the people familiar with the given
language know best which terms and how they need to be translated.
However, I do see the value in creating a global glossary that teams
could use as a template and simply translate.

If this is an area you believe to be important, and would like to see it
improved, I'd very much encourage you to revive that effort, or lead a
new project to create a global translation glossary (or memory) for all
teams. I'll certainly be glad to help, as I'm sure other people on the
list will be.

Again, that is something that needs to be discussed within each team.
We, in Catalan, for example tend to adhere to the practice of trying to
translate everything and not rely on English terms, where it applies
(e.g. we translate "software" to "programari", but we do not translate
e.g. "Rhythmbox")

Natty Translations Plans I: Translations Stories
Hi translators, One of the projects we're working on the translations community this cycle are Translations Stories [1]. We'd like to show how translations change people's lives for the best, and how the work of translators has an impact on that. We'd like to share our excitement and highlight the awesome work translators do, and we thought that articles with translations stories would be the perfect vehicle for that. In order to achieve this, we need your help. You don't have to be a translator for this: you only need a few spare hours and be willing to give back to the project contributing on this effort to raise awareness on translations. If you are a team coordinator, please help us by signing up for a story, or finding someone else in your team or LoCo who'd like to do it. I might also get in touch with you directly. My only advice would be, if you are presenting Ubuntu to people who don't know much about it, to start with the basics and don't get too much into detail. After a year with enough negativity, it is important to celebrate what is good and trying to cut through the darkness with positive message. Call for Maverick language pack update testing
Hi translators, (Re-issuing the call for testing after having re-uploaded the language packs after fixing a critical bug) We've uploaded language packs in the maverick-proposed repository for you to test before they are released to all users. These should contain all your updates and fixes in translations done since the release date. I'd like to ask teams to test them and provide an indication that they've done so by following some simple steps and submitting a signoff, so that we know that translations have been successfully tested. Simply follow the instructions in this page and add your team's signoff in the table at the bottom: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/LanguagePackUpdatesQA The deadline for the testing is the 25th of March (in a week's time). After that, we'll update the language packs we've received feedback for into maverick-updates, so that all users can benefit from the new translations and fixes. Call for creating and testing localized ISO images
Hi all, You are probably aware of this spec to create localized ISOs: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/desktop-o-cd-localization In a nutshell, language packs are going away from the main Ubuntu ISO (as you know, we could never include them all anyway), and instead, we're providing LoCos with a standard set of tools to create ISOs which not only can be shipped with a given language enabled and installed by default, but also allow setting other defaults appropriate for the given language/region/culture. At this point, I'd like to ask if any of you guys would be willing to sign up for creating and testing the first localized images for your language/LoCo. The tools are still being created, so for now we are not looking at creating them already, but rather for a list of contacts of people committed to creating and testing the first prototypes when the infrastructure is ready. The tour has been the result of the stunning work done by Ant Dillon from the Web Design Team and should provide a web-based first impression of Ubuntu to new users, in their language. Where is it? - The code lives on https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-online-tour - You can translate it on https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu-online-tour How can I use it for my LoCo website? - If you've already translated the tour in Launchpad, you can build a localized version in 3 easy steps: 1. All languages are generated when you call the translation script. If your website is an English one, you won't need to run the translation script, as you can copy directly the contents of the en/ folder. You are right in noticing that there is a hard link to the Simplified Chinese version of the tour in the generated HTML. That is because the tour was originally created for ubuntu.com, where only English and Chinese versions are available. Ideally, when building the translated versions, the HTML link should be replaced to a link to the particular language you are interested in, but that was out of scope for creating the tour for ubuntu.com. In any case, I assume webmasters adding the tour to local sites are well versed in HTML, so it should probably be easy for them to modify the HTML to remove the link or have it pointing to the right language. It's Community Docs Jam today!
Hi all, It's Community Docs Jam today! We want to fix www.ubuntu.com/community to better represent our community, and who better than our community to help providing that content? So join us today, pick an area in which you're interested on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/CommunityWebsite and give us a hand adding content. I've picked the Translations documentation, which one will you pick? As a reminder, and to provide some more context, here's Jono's original blog post for this initiative [1]: Improving Community ‘Getting Involved’ Documentation For quite some time now we have had some information about how to join the Ubuntu community at [www.ubuntu.com/community][]. This documentation has traditionally been pretty limited, doesn’t really help get people started effectively, and doesn’t represent the humanity and personal nature of being part of the Ubuntu community. We want to change that in this cycle. At UDS we had a great discussion about solving this problem. The challenge that we were faced with in refreshing this content is that the Canonical web team own these pages and have limited bandwidth for incorporating changes and improvements. As such we agreed to transition this content to a site where we can more readily make improvements and updates. This week I asked *Michael Hall* to deploy WordPress (which we agreed at UDS as our platform) with the Ubuntu theme to CanoniStack. Today we had a discussion to flesh out the information architecture for the site (largely inspired by the current IA). We are now in a position where we have the skeleton of the site and we want to produce some awesome content tuned to the needs of new community members, as well as other content for our entire community (such as information about governance and the code of conduct). To get this content in shape we have created a series of pages on `pad.ubuntu.com` for each page of content and we are transferring our existing content to these pages. We as a community can then collaborate on these pages and ensure they are crisp, concise, and provide all the information we need. When these pages are complete we can then transition them to the WordPress instance. When the content is there we will then ask the Canonical IS team to deploy it. Help Us! Join the Docs Jam! === To get this content in shape, on **Thursday 13th Dec 2012** we are going to be holding a documentation jam to work together and get this content refined and finalized. This is how it works: - You can see the list of pages and the links to the pads [by clicking here][]. - We will spend the day working on the content, refining and improving it and ensuring there are no typos. - All the content should be writting using [Markdown][] format; this makes it simple to write and merge into the WordPress site. So far you have heard only one side of the story. Making assumptions from that will never bring you the full picture. As a Canonical employee (who hasn't been involved in this topic, though) I can tell you that the last thing we do is to act with malice. It may have well been a confusion (either from Canonical or from the developer), but when there is confusion we act to fix it. I've also found that assuming good faith is always the best approach. Spreading incomplete assumptions and calling fellow community members fanboys does not contribute to solving anything, and it's not beneficial to either Ubuntu, Canonical or the developer. I'd suggest waiting from an authoritative reply from Canonical before making any judgement. Thanks. Traditionally app development advocacy has not been an area of focus of many LoCo teams, but I believe with the momentum of the phone/tablet announcements and the Ubuntu SDK, there is a great opportunity for LoCo teams to get involved. The session is today at 18:15 UTC, and with your expertise in running successful LoCos your participation would be extremely helpful. Hi all, As everyone in this list probably knows, vUDS is starting this week \o/ LoCo teams are going to be a key topic this time around, and I'd like to invite everyone who'd like to contribute to making our LoCos even more awesome to participate, be it on the live session, on IRC or with comments and actions on the blueprints. The idea is, if there are any translations issues (imports not working, critical upstream/downstream translation bugs, new packages for translation, etc.) we can talk about them in a more fluent way and catch them early in the process. Or if you've got any suggestions or ideas related to Ubuntu translations, they are also always welcome.
