Cristian, My heart goes out to all of you! Please know that you, the Chilean LoCo team and all those who are now dealing with devastating aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami are in the hearts and minds of the North Carolina LoCo team. May you all have the strength, wisdom and courage to make it through each moment as you face the task of picking up the pieces. May you all feel encircled by the thoughts, words, actions and compassion of the Ubuntu Community and that "Circle of Friendship" it represents. When I learned of the earthquake and saw the damage that you are now having to repair my heart sank, today when I read your email my eyes teared up. The Ubuntu Community is in fact as you describe, so much more than an operating system, it is a circle of friends indeed and without meeting you, I am as concerned for you and the Chilean LoCo team as I would be for the LoCo team I belong to here in North Carolina. As much as we celebrated the success within the Ubuntu Community, may we also find time to pause and show compassion in times like this. You and the whole Chilean LoCo team will be in our thoughts! Can we for example add a column to the Main LoCo Teams wiki [1] or to the LoCo directory that would include the times for the LoCo Meetings? Or created another wiki off the main for information like this? This would let both Projects and Other LoCo teams know who would be interested in having folks volunteer to pop in on LoCo meeting discuss everything from Art, the Q&A, to Ubuntu Women and more. LoCo Items for Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter
Hi all! Is your LoCo Team is doing great things? (of course it is!) Are you or your LoCo team members blogging about the awesomeness? (if not start, remember LoCo Teams Rock!!) Remember to let the UWN Staff know all about it. While we do our best to gather the LoCo information that is sent to the LoCo-Contacts Mailing list and Planet Ubuntu I am aware that there are items we have missed. So here's how you and your team can help us get the word out about all the great things all the LoCo teams are doing - :-D. There are several ways you can get the information to the UWN Staff: 1) Email the mailing list: ubuntu-news-t...@lists.ubuntu.com 2) Add suggestions to the IDEAS wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuWeeklyNewsletter/Ideas 3) #ubuntu-news IRC Channel - you can post your suggestion there Please include the following: 1) Title of the Post/Article 2) Link to the Article 3) Please make sure the Post/Article is within the week that is being reported on 4) Summary of Article (optional but very helpful) Thank you so much for sharing this with your teams, by doing so you are helping the UWN to become more effective in our goal to share LoCo News with the Community! We are always looking for people who want to help with the newsletter and in this cycle were are adding some new content, so if you think helping to produce the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter would be something you or someone on your team might enjoy please email me or find me on IRC (akgraner) and lets see what you can help work on. Reminder: Contributions to UWN Issue 198
Hi everyone! In an effort to get more submissions for the newsletter I am trying to email a couple of lists each week. Issue 198 is due to be published on Sunday, June 20, 2010, so if you have any Ubuntu related stories that have happened between the dates of June 13th and 19th, 2010 that you think might be a good fit please send them to the list, to me, or fill out the web form [1] - keep in mind, that they may not all make it but better to have and not need than to need and not have :-) If any of your LoCo teams have been involved in or posted any great things they are currently working on or doing please send those as well. The news teams tries very hard to find all the LoCo team information we can, but there are some weeks that we do indeed miss and activity or event report the team has provided - please help us to get the word out about how awesome the Ubuntu LoCo teams truly are. When you submit an item please add the following information: Title and Link to the Article. Please feel free to summarize the article as well if you are comfortable in doing so. Over the next week to 10 days a detailed explanation as well as additions to the submission process will be published. We are growing and as such so is the process! Thanks in advance for contributing, reading, as well as giving feedback. Thanks again and please if you have any questions, comments, suggestions let us know! I'll need to clear out some on my personal notes and shoot you a link to them. If you'll be at UDS I can just give it to you there (which gives me a couple days to clean it up) or I can email it you and provide some links to the list on Sunday if anyone else wants to talk a look and add to it. I have also begun the sponsorship spreadsheet (it's a googledoc atm), that list who sponsored various events (however it is a work in progress) if you need that as well. If anyone else needs it or would like to help maintain the sponsorship list please let me know - I'll be happy to share it. Ubuntu Open Week
Hi all, I know everyone is insanely busy at this time in the cycle; however, your assistance is needed as Open Week is less than 2 weeks away and the schedule is still *very* open. Please take a look at the schedule (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek) and lets see what we can do to bump this thing up a notch. Remember the target audience for Ubuntu Open Week is the *End User*, so think about what sessions can be offered to help users (all of us) to become even better, more efficient and effective. Each of us has knowledge we can share through what we do for the Ubuntu project, whether it is explaining what the council you are on does and what it means to the community, how does your Loco Team work, a Q&A session with your team so that end users understand what you do and how they can be part of that picture. What about a session on screencasting howto's, Filing bugs, testing and more. There are so many things to share and we share them everyday in some capacity. How about introductions to the derivative distro's such as Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, and more. If you are on the Server, Desktop, Kernel, Foundations, QA, DX, Design or other Team consider giving a Question and Answer Session. As mentioned above if you are on the Community Council, Forums Council, IRC Council, LoCo Council do you have an hour where you can talk about issues and overviews related to those areas and let the community know how to engage these areas better. What about projects such Beginners Team, Docs Team, Spread Ubuntu, Ubuntu Marketing etc, let's reintroduce some of these to the community again and share those things during open week. Please take a moment to see if you can carve out 1 (one) hour of your time to give to help end users learn more about the ins and outs Ubuntu and the community that makes it what it is. Share your knowledge. Don't worry if you haven't given a session before we can help you get started. If 14 people or teams of people can step up and give a session for open week this would be *awesome*! Take a look at the schedule (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek) and either let me know where to add your session or fill it in on the time table (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek/Timetable). If you have any questions, please email myself or Jorge Castro or ping either of us on IRC (akgraner or jcastro). I know I still have a lot to learn and I personally look forward to open week more than any other Ubuntu week because I always learn something new that helps me become a better end user and Ubuntu community member. Thank you in advance for those who will give sessions and those who will attend as every session leader and participant makes open week successful. with much gratitude and appreciation, ~ Amber :-D Amber Graner//akgraner// http://akgraner.com/ http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Online/Blogs/Amber-Graner-You-in-Ubuntu Need help with Ubuntu? Invitation to Join the Ubuntu Leadership Team
Hi all! We've kicked off the Ubuntu Leadership Teammore information can be found on the blog I just published. Below is the post in full and here is the link to it - http://akgraner.com/?p=1028. Please forward to your teams and to anyone you think would like to join, ask questions, make suggestion, etc. Thanks, Amber David Wonderly kicked off the launch of the Ubuntu Leadership Team in a blog post earlier this month. However, this is not the first that mumbles of leadership resources have been mentioned. It’s good to see this leadership resource initiative getting “off the ground” and I am excited to be part of this team. While this is an open team and anyone is welcome to join we did specifically send out an invitation for the various councils and boards to join. This team or membership on this team is not a requirement nor is it meant to be required training for anyone in the community who is a current, new or contemplating leadership roles and responsibilities. This team is meant to give leaders the resources to identify skills needed to become better more effective and successful leaders. In other words this team is meant to inspire not be required. The goal is to put out weekly leadership tips and techniques, skills, leadership styles and more. We want to hear your success stories, your suggestions, what you wish someone would have told you before you become a leader, what questions you have about leading an all volunteer group etc. We don’t make claims to have all the answers but what we do want to do is be able to find the people and the resources to help answer all those questions and concerns. If you are interested in leadership then please come and join the team and let’s develop the resources you wish you had been given when you decided to take on a leadership role in the Ubuntu Community. The first document is one I created for a LoCo Leadership handbook. It’s rough and needs a lot of gaps filled in and updated but at least it’s a start. Eventually David (and whomever) wants to help will add this to LP and BZR so we have some version control over it. Remember this team is a resource for the whole community and it’s open to everyone so please join in the fun, ask questions, make suggestions and more. Here’s where we are at so far: Wiki Page - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuLeadership Ubuntu LoCo Leadership Document - https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AdKZelXU8Y2LZGNrcHRkYmhfNzhmNnNmM2RjdA&hl=en_US IRC Channel – #ubuntu-leadership (on freenode) waiting on an Ubuntu Logbot to be dropped into the channel - *channel now being logged* Launchpad Team - https://launchpad.net/~ubuntuleadership Mailing list – Request for ubuntu-leaders...@lists.ubuntu.com has been requested Forums - Request made I hesitated to blog about this as I was waiting for the mailing list to be in place, but I’ll just keep updating everyone here and on the wiki page as more resources become available. However, please go ahead and join the LP team and the IRC channel. As soon as the mailing list is available we’ll post on various blogs, and social media sites and update the wiki. Also if there is someone who would like to create an Ubuntu Leadership Logo for us that would rock! (Please and Thank you!) Thanks again to those who are already joining and I can’t wait to see more people get involved. *** -- Amber Graner//akgraner// http://akgraner.com/ http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Online/Blogs/Amber-Graner-You-in-Ubuntu Need help with Ubuntu? Ubuntu Leadership Team Needs Feedback.
Earlier this morning I posted a blog post - What is a Leader? What Motivates People?- http://akgraner.com/?p=1037 In this post I asked for some feedback. Please consider giving the Ubuntu Leadership Team your feedback so we can create better community resources. What you wished someone had told you when you agreed to become a leader? What areas of leadership would you like to learn more about? What formats would you like the information presented in (ie online tutorial, video casts, podcast, blogs etc)? What challenges you face as leaders? What skills you’d like to improve upon? As well as any other feedback related to leadership you would like to give us? Many thanks in advance for your feedback! Hi all, First of all I apologize in advance for asking for Open Week [1] Sessions and Session Leaders at this late time in the cycle. Jorge Castro sent out the initial call for session leaders in early Sept [2] but due to this being a really busy cycle in terms of the 11.10 release not to mention all the busyness that life adds to our (those of us in the community) lives as volunteers the schedule is nowhere near full. I hope that many of you will be willing to help. Before I go into more of what we need - let me thank you first even considering it! You, your time, your talents and participation matter! Please ask your team members as well. Thank you in advance. Here is what we need 1) Session leaders and 2) Session Suggestions (What's something you'd like to know more about in Ubuntu 11.10 or Ubuntu in General. Do you lead a team or project? Do you want more people to know about the team/project? Do you need/want more contributors to your team/project? Are you involved in one of the many supported distributive distributions? Does it need more buzz surrounding it? Do you want to let the community know how they can get involved? If you answered yes to any of these questions or you know someone who can please consider giving an hour of your time to lead a session during open week. If you are new to leading an online session join #ubuntu-classroom-backstage and myself or one of the many other team volunteers can get you all the information you need. Is there a topic/project/team/ you 'd like to know more about getting involved with them please let myself or jcastro know so we can see who we need to find to lead that session. If you want to lead a session please include the following information. You can send this information to jcasto or myself and we can schedule it or you can add it to the timeline [3] yourself. Please DO NOT move a session with talking to the other session leader, jcasto, or myself. Thanks! Session Name: Session Summary: Session Leader Name (to include IRC NICK) Session Time Slot: On a side note Open Week is where I learned about many of the projects and places people can participate in the Ubuntu Project. This is a great opportunity to get your message out, ask for help from the community, learn what the community wants to know about your team/project and more. I know this is a busy time of the year, with release week, open week, planning for UDS, not to mention family, work and more. Again, thank you in advance and I look forward to your help in making this another successful open week. with much gratitude, Amber [1] - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek [2] - https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/loco-contacts/2011-September/005591.html [3] - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOpenWeek/Timetable -- Amber Graner//akgraner// http://akgraner.com/ http://www.ubuntu-user.com/Online/Blogs/Amber-Graner-You-in-Ubuntu Need help with Ubuntu?
