Re: 2.2.18pre25, S3, AMD K6-2, and MTRR....
This is precisely my problem. K6-2, model 8, stepping 12. Thus far, everything is *fine*, as long as MTRR is not compiled into the kernel. If MTRR is compiled into the kernel, I get lock-ups in X *only*, and the entire machine locks. I have no data on other CPUs; as I said, I previously had a P166, so no MTRR there to compare against. I assume that since you had a K6 266 earlier, with no problems, that the problem must exist in this model and stepping of the CPU (otherwise, if it were X you would have seen the problem previously. Ditto for the kernel). Kernel gurus, ideas for a workaround, other than "Don't use MTRR"? Victor -- Victor J. Re: 2.2.18pre25, S3, AMD K6-2, and MTRR....
After doing some googling It would appear that, in Family 5, Model 8, Stepping 12 of the K6-2, AMD used a different CPU core, that was more similar to the K6-3, and that there is a slightly odd way of doing write-combining. Perhaps this is the problem? Anyone with more knowledge on the AMD cores care to comment? Victor -- Victor J. Re: Freeze and reboot with 2.4.0-test12-pre5
Steven, One question: Do you have MTRR enabled? If so, a temporary workaround is to re-compile the kernel with it disabled. This is getting to be something of an epidemic. As I said, AMD's docs state that the write-combining was altered in the model and stepping stated. However, I would not consider myself *nearly* experienced enough in x86 assembler to start playing around with trying to work up a patch. Victor -- Victor J. Re: 2.2.18pre25, S3, AMD K6-2, and MTRR....
You appear to be right, sir. The SVGA xserver was what I was using. Changing over to use the S3 server, and then adding back in MTRRs, seems to have solved the trouble. I'll let you know if it returns, but for now, all appears well. Victor -- Victor J.
