Re: [Haifux] Successful Windows Vista refund!!

2008-12-03 Thread Rafi Gordon
Zvi,
  - First, congratulations for winning this important battle !

  - Second, I myself intend to buy a laptop in the near future.

And indeed, after surfing many israeli websites, I found out that all
of them come with windows. I don't intend to use windows on my laptop.
So may I ask: How long this process you ran took ? (from going to
court till getting that payment) ? what do you advice me to do ?

Or let's put it this way: it seems that your important struggle took a lot
of time and headache. You won your case. However, from what appears
in that news item, I doubt whether it is a precedent. They say there
that it was a "pshara", and it says there that they are not
binded by this case and it is "לפנים משורת הדין",

So what do you advice me to do ? to buy and then to go to court ?
It seems to me that all the hassle of such a procedure , and
traveling from the north the vendor offices (usually in the center)
and back in case I will win it, is simply is not acceptable for me.

And if I am not wrong, I heard that there are man known vendors who seel
laptops with free linux abroad. And this is true for quite a time.

Regards,
Rafi

Hi Rafi,

I have recently bought an Eee Pc by Asus from Panda, with
Pre-installed Linux and no Windows. However, the EeePc is only a
modest mini laptop, which might not suit your needs.

Hello,

I had encountered before Asus Eee Pc with linux on some israeli
sites; this is indeed a mini laptop. Talking about laptops (not UMPCs
and not mini laptops) - I did not encounter any stores in israel which
sell a "windows free" laptops , meaning that you can purchase them
without Windows.

I urge anyone that knows about such cases to inform us. I really doubt
there is even one
such store/vendor.

Here is one from Ivory/MSI:

This page state that you can by this machine with an OS, which implies that
you can have it without one.

Some of the machines you can also get with freedos in Israel (or no operating
systems). Linux is harder, but if you have your favorite Linux distribution you
will probably want to install it anyway.

Linux support is practically non-existent.

I'm guessing that the whole idea was to get the point through and not to
actually make any money off it, I doubt that it will be worth much due to
expenses and will take a lot of hassle, although it depends on your preferred
laptop.

At least at ivory you can get msi and dell with freedos (don't know if they
have gigabyte). Doesn't look like you can get a thinkpad without windows vista
though. They do give you an upgrade cd to windows xp (I know that they call it
a downgrade but they got their terminology wrong ;-)

In the states you can order thinkpads from lenovo with linux or no operating
system but they take about twice as long to ship for some reason.

There are such stores and vendors.

as for laptops, Dell (from several stores including ivory), MSI (from ivory), I
think that Gigabyte. Maybe others.

For my wife we bought MSI, for a friend of mine we got Dell, for another friend
a desktop from ivory, all without an operating system.

Great news. Good to see that this is being made public.

Dell (Israel?) does seem to have a policy to provide its lower end
laptops with FreeDOS as an OS. At least this is the impression I get from
a quick glance at zap.co.il:

* Lower-end Dell models tend to be offered with "NO OS" or "FreeDOS" as
the base option, and with various MS-Windows versions added for extra
  charge.

* On higher end Dell models this is no longer the case. XP professions or
Vista professional seem to be the base standard there.

* Computers of most other vendors don't seem to have a similar "NO OS"
  option.

And while I'm at it:

Rafi, contact Dell in Israel and tell them that you want a computer
with either Ubuntu/FreeDOS (they call these Open Source Laptops in
Dell-speak) or no OS at all. If we do not start telling the
distributors that we want this, then how can we expect them to provide
it?
