errors in routing table

2003-02-06 Thread Diego Iastrubni
Hi list,

I have a problem with my adsl connection. It's a samsung external modem. I am
using the rp-pppoe-3.5-1, from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/

The problem is that after I start the adsl-start script, my default gate way
is 10.0.03 (or what ever the dhcp server on that modem gave my nic).

What I am doing now is delete the default gateway and then making a new one to
actcom's default. After that my connection works great.

Does anybody know a way to fix it? (except just putting those commands in
/etc/init.d/rc.local).

- diego

re:Identification of my RH Box in the network

2003-02-06 Thread Karasik, Vitaly
If your linux machine is DHCP client and your DHCP server knows to send DDNS updates
to your DNS server, the solution is easy: just add DHCP_HOSTNAME=your_hostname into
/etc/sysconfig/network file (in Redhat Linux).

If your DNS server doesn't support DDNS, you need to add DNS record for your linux.

Identification of my RH Box in the network.

2003-02-06 Thread Amit Roseberger
Guys,
I have a relatively simple problem, (even though I am struggling with it
a few hours now..).
When I connect (via SSH) to a different machine in my LAN I then see
that I am recognized by my IP and not by my machine name.
For example if I issue the 'who' command in that machine I see:
amit pts/2Feb 6 11:43(10.1.2.3)
danpts/3Feb 5 13:30(foo.bar.office)

I am connected as amit...
I want my machine to be identifies with its name (arctic.bar.office) and
not by its IP number...

When I issue the 'hostname' command on my machine I get "arctic" and
when I logged in I log into arctic...
Maybe a misconfigured DHCP client?

Thanks :)

Amit.

Auto IP - why not in Linux ?

2003-02-06 Thread Michael Sternberg

ftp://ftp.isi.edu/internet-drafts/draft-ietf-zeroconf-ipv4-linklocal-07.txt

In short:

 0. Static IP configured - use it and announce neighbors with ARP
broadcast.
 1. DHCP configured - try to get IP. If successful - use and update
neighbors.
 2. If no answer - pick a random address from 169.254.0.0/16 range.
 3. Check if it's already used - with ARP probes.
 4. If address already used - wait a little and return to step 2.
 5. If free address was found - use it and update neighbors.
 6. Periodically check for DHCP server.

It should be a matter of changing a few scripts.
Why he major distributions not using it ?

Michael.

because it tries too hard to be smarter than the user and it's not
always the right solution. there is no technical reason why you should
not set this up for yourself, it should be vry simple.

there are ethernet ports that connect to USB and some are supported in
Linux. there are pptp and ppoe drivers that work for USB ADSL modems,
there are special gizmos that allow two masters (workstations) to be
connected to the same USB address space and exchange info. which of all
of the above are you trying? afaik there is no "standard" way to pass
IP over USB as of yet, PLIP took time to become a standard as well.

Just typed "ip over usb" in google and found some links about "Ethernet

BTW - it seems that most interest is drown around Zaurus PDA's, if that's
the case for you then the first link from the search sounds useful:

"How to set up an Ethernet over USB connection between the Sharp Zaurus
SL-5000D/SL-5500 and a Linux machine"

http://www.ruault.com/Zaurus/ethernet-over-usb-howto.html

Hope this helps.

Re: Strange pptp-linux problem

Eliran,
There isn't pptp-linux and/or pptp-adsl .
There is only pptp .
Try to understand the debug info and correct your setup. Anyway, since your
station started the LCP stage of ppp , it means that pptp works fine, and it
is ppp that fails.

none are official, adopt your own. as I said, it depends on your
application. USB is not meant for IP, same as PLIP became a defacto
standard without ever becoming an RFC, some of the above mentioned
standards may become a standard as well, but not yet.

Linux uPnP control point ?

2003-02-06 Thread Michael Sternberg

Hello
I'm looking for Linux uPnP control point application.
Does not have to be with fancy graphics and the only capability
I'm looking for - is to tell uPnP enabled gateway to make some
static port mappings. Anybody heard about such thing ? Tried to
search on Google and found nothing. I know that the last resort
is to use uPnP sdk and write something myself..

I'm not aware of any specific application and haven't been following
that subject for a long time but you might want to check the NAT
traversal IETF workgroup mailing list, I have some very vague memory of
seeing something there that can help you 10 months or so ago.

BTW, if my memory serves me right uPnP is very very simple to implment.
In fact, it is *too simple* up to the point of being a serious security
hazard as (at least in it's then current state) - it had no real
authentican mechasim and any uPnP enabled device/application on teh
network can use the gateway to do a man in the middle attack on any uPnP
using device and worse. Maybe they got it fixed since. Maybe... ;-)

Cheers,
Gilad

Try upnpd:

Very simple and straightforward.

I already have an ADSL Alcatel HomeConnect(?) modem I bought from Bezeq

or anything like that?

If I remember correctly, there's slightly less overhead with PPPoE,
but I'm a promoter of the old saying: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
