Thanks, Eran!

As a service for the confused reader, who may wonder what's the big deal,
after all it was not a long time ago when Mandrake released their 8.0 and
Linus released 2.4.3 (the version included with 8.0), let me add the
following notes, about the large improvements of the latest AC of 2.4.4
over 2.4.3:

1. Much faster, thanks to a major optimization of the way fork-exec is
   implemented.
2. Networking is much faster too, thanks to the "zero-copy-networking".
3. Much safer, thanks to many security improvements that were done
originally by OpenWall for 2.2.19, and ported to 2.4.4.
4. Various add-ons for the kernel, that are applied as patches to a
specific kernel version (such as grsecurity), require 2.4.4.
5. Immediately after releasing 8.0, Mandrake started to consider to
include XFS in their standard kernel (there was not an official
version of XFS when 8.0 was released); There is a high chance to see
   XFS with the new kernel.

And if somebody still asks: "I don't see the problem; You can always
pick the latest kernel and build it under your OS!", then I must add
that Mandrake added zillion of useful additions, improvements, and
patches to the standard kernel, and by building a pure kernel, you give
them up.

So the only thing that left to be done, is to wait and see if the new
kernel was compiled with XFS or without it...

IIRC, that feature's effects on the scheduler were not considered properly,
and you could get all kinds of undesired scheduling behavior under 2.4.3,
such as unresponsive processes and the like, and Linus reverted it in 2.4.4.

Now thats plain STUPID from Mandrake side...

all the nsplugin stuff is something like 70K in the Redhat's RPM and it is
inside kdebase (on Redhat's side)

Why seperate it? and for 70k?

Linux on Pentium 4 ?

2001-05-18 Thread Pinchas Rosenfeld

Hi Linuxers,
In the last 6 years, my old P-100 with 32MB of memory workstation,
moved from RH-2.1, to RH-4.0, to RH 5.0, 5.1, 5.2, 6, 6.1 and also to
Mandrake 7 and 7.1. During that time I did several nice unix programming
projects on it and the compilation speed didn't bother me at.
(gave me more time for coffee-:).
Now, with RH 6.2 and Mandrake 7.2 , my computer is really overworked
and can barely run a graphic IDE on it.

I want to upgrade to Linux on Pentium 4. I searched the net , but it looks
as if there are no linux distributions that perform well on Pentium 4,
or perform at all ?
Does anyone of you have any experience on that matter ?

Eagerly waiting for your response.

Re: Linux on Pentium 4 ?

Hi Pinchas,

Mind telling me why do you want to pay for stuff that you really don't need
or use?

Examples:

1. You want to buy Pentium 4 - yet, there isn't a single program that will
let you use it's real power (specially with SSE2). GCC 3.1 will probably have
support for SSE-2, but currently - nothing is supporting it.

2. Buying P4? congratulations - now, buy RDRAM, yes - the very expensive one
which has been shown in every review that it's speed is the same with
DDR-RAM..

3. You'll also need to replace your board, box, and power supply because it
makes lots of heat..

So why don't you just buy yourself a nice AMD Athlon, that 1.2 Ghz or 1.33
Ghz is much cheaper then any Pentium 4, couple it with some DDR-RAM, buy in
the spare change some good graphics card and sound card - and enjoy ;)

The necessity of in might not be very high, but just out of curiosity,
can one run Linux on a Pentium 4 driven system?

You seem to have an ADSL connection to israsrv.
Since an Actcom user has told me that with his ADSL connection there is a significant
difference between out of Israel sites and in Israel sites (about 50 kb/sec and 220
kb/sec) I wonder if you are willing to report your rates.

Actually, are users of the other ISPs can report their rates? Is there a difference
between sites in and out of Israel?

I might be wrong but from my experience is that when comparing download rates one has
to take into account the size of the downloaded file.

As far as I understand they have 2 kinds of support teams:

1. private support (03 - 925?): this team handles `occasional' dial up
customers. Most home users are probably fit into this category. I tend to
speculate that this team only reports about networking problems rather then
trying to do something in order to solve them.
2. business support: (1-800-800-110) the name implies what this means.

If you can you should try their business support. This is determined by the
way bezeqint is classifying your connection. Yet I believe that k12 orgs might
get the business classification.

Re: is there a problem on kde.org??? - part 2

2001-05-18 Thread Dani Arbel

Hi!
1) There sure are differences between il rates and abroad rates. This may
be due to:
a) much shorter RTT inside IIX
b) ISP's have more free b/w to IIX than to their Internet uplinks
(especialy during the peak times).

Note that with short file d/l you get slower speeds because of tcp slow
start mechanism.

I currently use BezeqInt and they are very slow at peak times. looks like
a modem connection. Even to IIX i get slow response, heakups, etc.
