OK, Cool. NOw, its the first friday of the month, right? So it will be
on the 7.4, but what hour?
I have seen somebody say its 11:00AM, but some of us are still learning
in school, and stuff...

Oh, and if I am 128 years old?(0x80) ;)
Why not restrict the age to 0xff? ;)

Hey

I learn in school in the morning too.
I want to come to the meetings but it's always in the morning.
I think we should do the meetings afternoon or maby in the evening.
What do you think about that?
It will be much more easier.

That's the model. I'm not sure who copied whose ideas, KT or DWN.

Try the links on the left bar... KT/KC news (also summaries from Wine,
Gimp, Hurd...) or Kernel Traffic Home: Latest Issue.

Ah... AFAIK, the idea was to put in the kernel code that does
encryption. Not encrypting the kernel source itself. Like an encrypted
filesystem for example, encrypted block devices... For the kernel
itself to do encryption of other data. That would make the kernel an
encryption device. Some countries put problems on distribution of
encryption devices.

Well, why don't you listen to the warnings??

Start by turning off ALL the power saving modes in your BIOS, and see if you
still have problems. In many occasions, some BIOSes/drivers/OS's have bugs in
their power saving code. If you don't really need this, esp. if this is a
server that is on 24h/day, do yourself a favour and turn it off for good.

What is the "reason" for an NMI interrupt? Can I learn from that which

The reason is the value of port 0x61. the difference between 2d and 3d
is almost random (bit 4 changes every memory refresh cycle). The
difference between 2c and 2d (bit 0) is clock 2 enable (the clock used
to drive the speaker). Maybe there was a "beep" at the nmi occured?

Some bioses send some apm interrupts even when it is disabled, so you
might want to compile basic apm support in the kernel. And make sure the
ram is ok. Do you use true parity or ecc ram?

In intel 430tx documentation, there is complete explanation of port 0x61
value. It won't you help much.

Do you by any chance have IO-APIC on your motherboard ?
Do you have anything diferent from 0 on the NMI line on your /proc/interrupts ?
Do you have a machine with a MCA bus ?

I am sorry, I missed the beginning of the thread, so I don't know if you
already posted your configuration or not.

The message you are getting comes from a trap called straight from the
heart of your kernel. Any info on your hardware could help us to have ideas
on what's happening there.

Again, I did not follow the thread from the beginning. If you'd like some help, and
has already sent the system info to the list, please email me it so that I can
see if something strikes the eye.

That's assuming that the hardware sets the necessary bits, which is not
always true.

I see. Thanks. Do they "do not set the necessary bits" as a bug, or by
nature
of the "defect" (for lack of a better word) causes the bits to be written
wrongly ? Do you have any resource you may point me to that would give me

Hebrew for Linux Workshop 14.4

2000-04-01 Thread Roi Hadar

Shalom.

On Friday 14.4 at 10:00 we will hold the first Hebrew for Linux Workshop.
The venue is tentatively the IDC in Herzlia, but an offer of a location
better served by public transport will be considered favourably.

The purpose of the workshop is to crystallize, coordinate and accelerate the
haphazard and piecemeal progress already underway towards full Hebrew
support under Linux, and to induct more people into this effort.

The workshop is intended primarily for developers - and people interested in
becoming developers (documenting and packaging the software also count as
development!).

Nadav Har'El will open with a survey of progress achieved up to date and a
perspective of our goals.

Afterwards we want to have short technical reviews of topics such as
character encoding, fonts in X, BiDi algorithms, i18n in KDE and GTK etc.,
to enable developers unfamiliar with these issues to get started. If you
believe you can present such a review, please email me or the ivrix-discuss
list.

Please forward this to people not on these lists who you think might be able
to contribute. We want to have with us everybody working on Hebrew for
Linux. If you don't follow regularly the mailing lists be sure to check
 for updates.

Re: Frame Relay card for linux.

2000-04-01 Thread Shaul Karl

In case you are willing to be satisfied with an external box:
1) You can rent one from Bezeq.
2) I forgot the company name but try to call ECI and ask about it. If you'll
be able to explain yourself clearly and get luck to talk to the right person
you might get their number (for an external box). Actually, Bezeq might give
you a name + phone number too.

BTW: Will the ADSL be charged per minute of use? ADSL 700kbps seems better
then most FR lines, isn't it?

Another quote from Chen:
/startqouting The date is Friday, 7.4.2000, and we're gonna start showing up
at around 9am. You are welcome to get early and get to know the people
behind the Email addresses and urban legends. Linux geeks meetings are
never boring and it's a great chance for newbies to ask veteran users
some questions face-to-face instead of the delay of a mailing list.
feel free to bring laptops (show off cool stuff you hacked together or
ask us to help you with setups). /endqouting

As someone else wrote: (1) Satisfying everybody is difficult. (2) The time was
decided by voting.

Since the time of the meeting has much to do with the availability of a class
room and because the IDC location seems to me a bit isolated I will begin by
trying to find a place in Tel-Aviv.

the device bezeq currently rents to people that need a FRAD (frame-relay
access device) is Radwiz's pico router. you have to pay a 690 NIS one time
installation fee for this device's installation, and something around 70
NIS per month. these charges are ofcourse added to the charges on the
frame-relay line itself. if you call bezeq's people about this device, its
name is "IP Router" (or maybe "Web router" - they managed to get me
confused about their strange naming conventions...).

this router is very small, has a 10 Mbit ethernet UTP connection (i.e.
twisted pair, or RJ-45, or whatever name you use to refer to that) and
another V35 connection, used to connect to bezeq's FR modem.

naturally, the software they supply for controlling the device is for
WinXX, but you can connect to it via any VT terminal emulation program and
configure it manually.

1 note: it takes this device quite a while to boot (over a minute, i
think).

btw, the bezeq technician that gave me the device with configuration
instructions (i simply insisted on installing it myself, rather then
waiting for them to come) actually had linux installed at home ;0

hope this helps,

guy

I trully hope that you don't buy Bezeq PR bullshit..

Current tests with the bezeq ADSL service shows that its anything but
stable. Its running on a CRAP NT server which crashes almost daily..

FYI.

Linux in M$ settlement talks

2000-04-01 Thread Oleg Goldshmidt

I just read a Bloomberg news item reporting that Microsoft's
settlement talks with Justice and states broke down, and
the Court decision is expected next week. Here is a snippet
that caught my attention:

 Office for Linux
Microsoft also rejected a proposal by the states that
Microsoft develop a version of its popular Microsoft Office
software for the Linux operating system, people familiar with the
talks said.
The states argued that the development of Office for Linux
would give a boost to the upstart competing operating system and
blunt Microsoft's ability to use Office to gain control of the
market for operating systems for servers, which run networks of
computers.
