Bug regarding transposed key change

2017-12-05 Thread Robert Murdoch

Hi, I think I've discovered a bug in 2.19.80.

When I change the key signature midway through a piece, the key of a
transposed part is placed ahead of the key in the other parts. See the
attached file if what I say makes no sense.

Well - it happened as far back as 2.12 - which was released around 9
years ago - so your memory must be long if you can remember a release
where it didn't do this!

Oh! Well, I guess I was completely wrong. Sorry, I thought it was a bug.
It just seemed strange to me that the program would do this.

Tie Crusade: The Revenge

2017-12-09 Thread Robert Murdoch

Salutations,

Ties for notes between the bottom two staff lines (e.g. treble F4, bass
A2, alto G3) and between the top two staff lines (e.g. treble E5, bass
G3, alto F4) appear to be positioned incorrectly by default. They begin
and end between the notes instead of slightly above or below them, and
they touch the staff lines. Sorry if I didn't explain this properly, but
this has slightly bugged me ever since I first started using LilyPond in
2014 (though only now did it occur to me to talk about it here).

I am able to use the tie-configuration command of TieColumn to position
them the way I think they ought to be positioned, but of course doing
this for every one of them in a score is time-consuming. There is also a
blog post about tie positions on the official LilyPond blog:
http://lilypondblog.org/2013/08/tie-crusade-round-2/

Here are two example files.

Ties between bottom two staff lines and top two staff lines positioned strangely

2017-12-11 Thread Robert Murdoch

Hi,

Two days ago, I posted a topic to the mailing list called "Tie Crusade:
The Revenge" where I informed that ties between the bottom two staff
lines (e.g. treble F4, bass A2, alto G3) and between the top two staff
lines (e.g. treble E5, bass G3, alto F4) are positioned strangely; they
are positioned between the notes and touch the staff lines.

In retrospect, I should not have called the topic "Tie Crusade: The
Revenge" because it gives no clue as to what I'm talking about in the
post. Unsurprisingly, nobody replied.

Is there any way to fix the tie issue without applying \override
TieColumn.tie-configuration = #'((dir . position)) to every tie that is
positioned like this? And will there be a patch for this?

Re: Ties between bottom two staff lines and top two staff lines positioned strangely

2017-12-11 Thread Robert Murdoch
Well, ties on other notes seem to be positioned just above or below the
notes (unless they're in a interval/chord) which I think is the
standard. I guess it does boil down to a matter of taste in the end, but
I don't think I've seen ties in a professional score be positioned the
way they are for treble F4, treble E5, etc. in LilyPond, not for single
notes anyway. Either that, or I overlooked them. It just looks
inconsistent and it's slightly grated on me since I first started used
this program in 2014, though only now have I thought to discuss it.

For comparison, I've attached an image I found of how ties usually look
at treble E5.

Hi Robert,

For me, I see nothing strange - I think this is a matter of taste. I
don't have the standard text Behind Bars to quote from, but I feel
this is a matter of personal judgement.

Without resorting to adjusting the TieColumn, you could take a look at
the Tie.details list. There ought to be enough tunability in there to
suit you (although I am well aware of the Tie Crusade. Whatever
happened to that by the way?)

I don't think it is actually an issue, requiring a patch.

Tell us how you want it to look.

Andrew

Bug: Beaming Over Rests with Two Voices

2018-01-17 Thread Robert Murdoch
Hi, I think I've discovered a bug that's rather hard to explain, but
I'll try.

When I use two voices and am beaming over rests, the rests seem to be
positioned based on the pitch of the second voice. I have attached a
file of an extract from a piece of music where—in the third
measure—there is an A-Sharp in the first voice and a G-Sharp in the
second voice. The rests in this measure are positioned higher up than
the rests before them, so the beam goes through them. Notice in the
first two measures where the notes in the second voice are further apart
and the rests are positioned correctly.

Sorry if I didn't explain this well.

Regarding laissez vibrers

2018-02-26 Thread Robert Murdoch
Hi, looking at this post
,
the (currently) broken repeatTie on single notes in a chord can be faked
with \override LaissezVibrerTie.head-direction = #RIGHT <{note}\laissez
Vibrer {note}\laissezVibrer>. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to
get two or more laissez vibrers facing different directions on the same
chord. The log says that laissez vibrers in the same chord should all
face the same direction, so is there another way?

Problems with Frescobaldi compiling .PDF file from Cygwin-installed version of LilyPond

2018-03-29 Thread Robert Murdoch
Hi, I've recently successfully installed the master branch of LilyPond
through Cygwin. I did this because I lack the patience to wait for the
next stable release where the repeat tie fiasco will be fixed.

That being said, Frescobaldi seems to be having trouble compiling a .PDF
file through the Cygwin-installed LilyPond with the following message:

> Fork: child -1 forked process died unexpectedly, retry 0,
exit code 0xC135, errno 11
> warning: g_spawn_sync failed (0): gs: Failed to fork (Resource
temporarily unavailable)

The strange thing is that when I run LilyPond from the command-line, it
successfully compiles and generates a .PDF file with no problems.

What am I doing wrong besides, you know, being thoroughly impatient?
Thanks for reading.

Metronome mark stem length

Sorry it took so long to reply. I've been trying to set up GNU Mailman

Anyway, I don't think I elaborated properly. I was already aware of the
\global hack, but one is essentially replacing a command with a variable
containing the same command. You still need to insert \global on every
staff so it's the exact same thing to me.

I was hoping one could program LilyPond so that one could simply insert
the \key command on one staff and it would automatically print the key
signature on all staves at that point without needing to write pointless
variables, like the \time command already does. If there really is no
way, there really should be, I think.

Thanks for taking the time to respond anyway.

I Too Have Problems with Codas

2017-09-17 Thread Robert Murdoch

Hi,

For some reason my reply to Shamus Hammons' "Problems with Codas" post
hasn't shown up after half an hour, so I'll post about codas here instead.

It is practically impossible to set up a coda properly in LilyPond. In
most scores I've seen, the main score and the coda section are separated
by whitespace on the same line, and the brackets/braces, barline before
clef, clef, key signature and time signature are re-printed.

It is possible, albeit extremely complicated, to create the whitespace
and clef, key and time with \stopStaff and engravers, but it seems
creating the brackets/braces and barline before the clef cannot be done,
as powerful as LilyPond is. All examples I've seen for codas in the
LilyPond Snippet Repository are for a single staff that requires no
brackets or braces, which isn't really helpful.

Maybe I'm wrong—I haven't explored every single aspect of the program,
after all—but I thought codas would be made easy to create after all
these years.

If my description above didn't help, here's blank sheet music of sixteen
bars with a coda, done in MuseScore.

Text Spanner Leading Directly Into Another Text Spanner

2017-09-18 Thread Robert Murdoch

Hi,

Is there a way to create a text spanner that leads directly into another
text spanner, for example an accelerando into a ritardando? I've tried
using \stopTextSpan and \startTextSpan on the same note, but the second
text spanner is above the end of the first one which is not what I want.

Text Spanner Leading Directly Into Another Text Spanner

2017-09-19 Thread Robert Murdoch
Thanks for all the helpful replies everyone, but I've now run into a new
problem; I want the second text spanner to align with the first
spanner's dashed lines, for the first system. The second text spanner is
currently below the dashed lines. How do I fix this?

How do I revert a TextSpanner's staff-padding after a line break?

2017-09-19 Thread Robert Murdoch
I'm really sorry to bother you all again, but I can not figure this out.
In my last question about a Text Spanner leading into another Text
Spanner, I was finally able to align an accelerando with a ritardando
using staff-padding.

Unfortunately, after the line break in my score the spanner continues at
the same height as it was on the previous line, as if staff-padding
affects spanners after a line break too. I want the spanner after the
break to revert to 0, but how do I do this?

Thanks for reading.

Assign Dynamics Context to PianoStaff for MIDI

2017-10-05 Thread Robert Murdoch

Hi,

I was wondering how to assign a Dynamics context to a PianoStaff so it
plays piano-centred dynamics in the piano part correctly in the MIDI
file, without having to manually insert dynamics on notes in every voice.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, but I'm afraid it didn't work.
I'm using 2.19.65. I asked this because assigning dynamics to every
voice—even in a separate midi block—is really tedious.

Robert,

I am confused. What doesn't work with my code that I posted?

If you create a separate 'score' for your MIDI realization (which you
want to have a centered dynamics context for the piano as a whole), it
should be that simple - no need to worry about voices, just create a
dynamics context using similar code to what I posted and set it to
apply to the instrument.

Can you help me understand better what you are not getting to work?

Thanks!
I think my problem is that my score is layered differently in that the
music isn't contained within variables outside the \score block. It
looks something like this:

-
EXAMPLE CODE START
-

\score
    <<
        \new PianoStaff = "pianoI" \with {
            instrumentName = "Piano"
            shortInstrument = "Pno."
        } <<
            \new Staff = "pianoIRH" <<
                \new Voice = "mvmntIVoiceI" \relative c' {
                    \clef treble
                    \key c \major
                    \time 4/4

                    \oneVoice ...music...
                }
                \new Voice = "mvmntIVoiceII" \relative c' {

                    \voiceTwo ...music...
                }
            >>
            \new Dynamics = "pianoID" {
                ...dynamics...
            }
            \new Staff = "pianoILH" <<
                \new Voice = "mvmntIVoiceIII" \relative c {
                    \clef bass
                    \key c \major

                    \oneVoice ...music...
                }
                \new Voice = "mvmntIVoiceIV" \relative c {

                    \voiceTwo ...music...
                }
            >>
            \new Dynamics = "pianoIP" {
                ...pedal...
            }
        >>
    >>
    \layout {
        ...layout options...
    }
}

---
EXAMPLE CODE END
---

So when I tried doing what you suggested but applying it to my
formatting choices, I failed.

Does this clarify anything?

Re: Assign Dynamics Context to PianoStaff for MIDI

2017-10-06 Thread Robert Murdoch
I myself should also clarify that what I've been trying to do the whole
time is get the midi file to playback dynamics properly, not merely fit
them between the staves in a midi file. I think I didn't explain myself
properly, I just assumed. I tried using your code as well, but could
hear no differences in volume when I played back the file.

\repeatTie on single note in chord still not showing up

2017-10-19 Thread Robert Murdoch

Hi,

A few months ago, somebody wrote about how to insert repeatTies on a
single note in a chord, and it was discovered that when one did this
e.g. 2, the tie wouldn't show up. It was decided it
was a bug. You can find the thread here
.

As of 2.19.80, the issue is still at hand.

Thanks for reading.

Approximate Time of 2.20 Release?

2017-10-30 Thread Robert Murdoch
Hi, I was curious if the development team has an estimation of when
LilyPond 2.20 will be released. It would be nice to have some idea as to
the approximate time it will happen. It says 2.19.80 is "a pre-release
for the upcoming stable 2.20 release" on LilyPond's news page, so will
2.20 be next or will there be a 2.19.81?

P.S. I understand development takes time, and I'm not saying "Thou shalt
release 2.20 soon or I shalt hunt you down" or anything like that. I'm
curious and looking for some information. Sorry if this message comes
across as rude.

How do I apply patch files to my LilyPond binary on Windows?

2017-11-14 Thread Robert Murdoch

Hi,

I was wondering if it was possible to apply patch files to binaries on
Windows, and if so how to do it.

I have been waiting for about a month for LilyPond 2.19.81 where
hopefully the problem with the repeat ties in chords will be fixed (in
case any reader doesn't know, as of 2.19.80 repeat ties can be applied
to all notes in a chord, but not individual notes). I have been eyeing
the bug tracker (https://sourceforge.net/p/testlilyissues/issues/) and
git repository (http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/lilypond.git) and it
appears to have been fixed in the master branch.

Now I'm wondering if I can apply the patch at
https://codereview.appspot.com/332990043 to my Windows binary file. I
was going to complain that I was running out of patience waiting for the
next unstable release, but then I realised it's my own fault for not
asking this question sooner.

Anyway, thanks for reading.
