Atom lilypond mode

[Andrew Bernard]

Does anybody use the lilypond mode for the Atom editor? Is it any good? I'd
be interested to hear opinions.

I'm a long term emacs user, but Atom seems to be progressing nicely.

Hello Harm!
Sorry, I did not express myself well!
I want to go through "Ez_numbers_engraver_harm"
to convert NoteHead to a number and display AmbitusNoteHead directly.
I do not want (if possible) to go through "brew-ez-stencil" ...

Problem with german umlauts and with mapping text to notes

Hi,

I like the lilypond package and I decided to dive into for my guitar
playing book.

Unfortunately I stumble over two problems which can be seen in the
example attached.

- First there is the German umlauts. As you can see in the example, it
  is correct encoded in UTF-8 but the umlauts are encoded as "??".
  I did already try to use no bomb or even in latin1 encoding. But
  nothing helped.

- The second problem is about aligning the text with the notes. As you
  can see, it never get aligned correctly. I put it in the file in two
  versions. The first is without any hint and the second is with all
  hints. None of them has the proper aligning (Starting with "Roter"
  over two notes, then "Mond" over one and the next note without text.
  After that, "überm" over two notes and "Silbersee" over three and so
  on.

Do you have any hint how to solve that two problems?

Later on I plan to include that in LaTeX document but at the moment I
just try to get my music in a beautiful setup.

They encode fine on my side. You need to set up Lily to use the right
fonts. See: http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.19/Documentation/notation/fonts. I
find that Linux Libertine looks superb in a wide range of applications.

Here I can help: First of all, only your second version can be expected 
to work at all (ro -- ter) because otherwise Lilypond has no way of 
guessing which part of a word is a "syllable".


What's missing is the link between the 'voice' (containing the actual 
notes) and the lyrics line. There are various ways:


- Immediately after the music, you can write \addlyrics:

 \new Staff { \relative {   a4 a | a2( | a4) h8 c }
\addlyrics { Ro -- ter Mond ü -- berm  }}

(This is not the most flexible solution; personally I only use it for 
very simple or quick'n'dirty scores.)


- Explicitly connecting the lyrics line to the melody:

\new Staff \new Voice = "arbitraryName" { \clef treble \global \relative {
  a4 a | a2( | a4) h8 c | h a g4 | a a a2( | a4) h8 c | h a g4 \break

Cannot reproduce. Which LilyPond version are you using? And which 
operating system?

Using only \new Lyrics \lyricmode … every syllable gets the same 
duration; in your case that’s a half note because your last note before 
the lyrics is an “a2”. You can either assign the correct durations yourself


\new Lyrics \lyricmode { Ro4 -- ter Mond2. ü8 -- berm Sil -- ber see4 … 
}

or use \lyricsto or \addlyrics:

\addlyrics { Ro -- ter Mond ü -- berm Sil -- ber -- see … }

Have a look at the Notation Reference about lyrics for how to use these 
functions exactly.

That one is a bit tricky.

It is a half and a quarter note that should sound like a dotted half
note. But the "Mond" should be sung only on the half note and the
quarter note should be silent.

So my "Mond _" consumes the "b" after the compound note which should be
the "ü". from "überm".

So is it possible to have the syllable just on the first note even if
they are bound together?

I'm afraid I don't quite understand. If the quartet note should be 
silent, I think you'd better write be a rest. But probably you just want 
to say that there is no new syllable on the tied note?

I also tried to use Libertine (what was not installed) and looking at
the Font shapes, it is used.

Unfortunately the German umlauts gets still encoded with "??".

I just test it under debian system and found it working.

Is there any global settings that could prevent the correct encoding?

For stuff like encoding problems it is _absolutely_ necessary that you
specify the operating system you use, the LilyPond version you use, and
whether you used the distributed installer or something else.

Well, it helps me to analyse the problem:
LilyPond 2.19.80 is in _no_ regard prepared to work with guile
versions higher than guile-1.8.8

Best you can do is to install LilyPond from our precompiled installer.

OTOH, it _is_ possible to compile LilyPond with guilev2, but you'll
experience a heavy slow down and probably undected bugs.
Don't rely on such a compilation for serious work.
Any help for the guilev2 migration is highly welcome, though!
If you consider doing so, I could demonstrate how to get started.

Yeah.  Somebody considered a good idea to override the defaults and
enable experimental Guile-2 support.  So you are being part of an
experiment.  Instead of having the touted 10% speed advantage of Gentoo,
that slows down your version of LilyPond by about 400%.  It also gives
you some pretty bad bugs.  But then you noticed.

Grml, that overwrite was necessary as other systems pulled in that
guile2. And it seems to be that they are not be able to be installed in
parallel.

However, if the chord is  my code doesn't work well 
again.


I think that there is not an easy solution that fits all.

AFAIK, there's no "lilypond mode" for Atom. Just a few packages, mainly 
syntax highlighters.


I've used Atom (and VS Code) for LilyPond projects in the last months, 
just because it has support for triggering automatic builds (Make, 
etc.). Frescobaldi doesn't have it yet:

There should never be a unison and a second in a chord.


I know that is not a very common situation. I'll show you two examples.

The notes of the Dsus4 chord on a ukulele are, in absolute notation:  g' 
d' g' a'


The resulting chord is:  ; as you can see, is a chord with 
a second above an unison.


The Ebsus4 chord has the following notes: as' es' as' bes' ; a second 
above an unison, both with accidentals.


In the cluster of whole notes without a stem, it seems harmless enough 
to move the notehead.  But if this same chord had a stem (e.g., 
half-note or shorter), you’d see that moving the notehead away to 
eliminate the collision also takes it away from the stem, which is 
musically wrong.


To properly show the notes in your example in a half-note chord, you 
will need two stems, which means you need two voices.  And if it is 
needed for half notes, it is also needed for whole notes, at least in 
my opinion.

To get what you want, you can manually move the note head with its 
associated accidentals.  I believe that is the proper approach, since

LilyPond can work fine with a private Guile-1.x compilation (configured
with something like --prefix=/opt/guile-1.8 which let's "make install"
put all the stuff there instead of in system directories) as long as you
give the proper GUILE_CONFIG=/opt/guile-1.8/bin/guile-config invocation
to LilyPond's configure run.

My workflow is the good old "write first on paper and then use lilypond".
Many times i have to figure out how to expand lilypond to notate something
different or outside traditional notation (thanks to anyone that helped me
before). Often I write a very ugly draft that makes sense only to me and
them use lilypond for the final version. I find that sometimes lilypond
helps me to find a notation solution that is easier to understand to a
trained musician because is closer to the notation we are accostumed.
