Hi Kieren,

I did some checks on the absolute font-sizes:
- If you do a stencil-add on a stencil created via
grob-interpret-markup and interpret-markup inside a normal markup,
they exactly match-
- If you do a pixel by pixel compare (I did in gimp) a Lyric markup
with an abs-font-size with different global-staff-sizes, they also
match ...
... but you have to move the letter. IMO this is reasonable, because
different staff-sizes mean different scaling of anything else but
these absolute scaled fonts.
Now if you import a simple PDF with a single 'X' 42pt into
Libre/OpenOffice, it will show the found font-sizes of the
text-objects.
If you create the PDF with LibreOffice Century Schoolbook L 42pt and
reimport that PDF, you will have exactly 42pt.
If you create PDF files with an absolute-font-size of 42pt, it will
result in 41,9pt in the reimported file - regardless of the
global-staff-size.
AFAICS the font-size is absolute, but there seems to be a calculation
inaccuracy of 0.1pt.

Does the patch in
http://code.google.com/p/lilypond/issues/detail?id=3483> help?

a quick test, after building lilypond including this patch still shows
41,9pt. So there still seems to be an inaccuracy - maybe its a float
very near 42 that is rounded/truncated/whatever to a tenth pt number
while importing the PDF.
So as long there is no problem for the printer and the result on paper
has the right size, I'd call this 'ugly' but not a top-list-issue.

Rats.

The metrics according to Pango appear to be in 0.1pt increments. If we
are talking about PostScript/TeX point confusion, 42pt are 41.84bp, so
that would be _just_ short of 41.9bp after rounding. I would not rule
it out as a source of the problem (particularly if Pango has to round to
get into its 0.1pt scale, and back again), but I am somewhat sceptical
nevertheless.

The main question is likely whether we now get consistent results from
LilyPond: Kieren reported inconsistent sizes depending on how the
absolute font size was arrived at.

This example file is very old. When I try to run it (under 2.17.23), I get
a warning "file too old: 2.6.0 (oldest supported: 2.7.38)". Running
convert-ly on it doesn't fully update it: in particular "staff" isn't

The syntax seems correct. It compiles without any conversion after
changing the 1. Line to

\version 2.16.2
and makes a pdf and a midi file.

Thanks.

At the time I processed that file I used 2.12.2, but now, even after
having reverted to 2.12.2 from 2.16.2, I cannot get lilypond to run even
to the stage of giving me a log file to allow me to deal with any syntax
issues.

Now I'm wondering if I made some terrible error while installing
lilypond. I am attempting a complete cleanup and will report back in a
couple hours.

I have an update consisting of a command line session log (not the
lilypond log file).

Please find attached lilypond_debug_log.txt and craptastic-1.ly.

I had observed that following the uninstall prior to installing the new
lilypond, the C:\program files\lilypond directory was still left behind,
together with some of its subdirectories, when the uninstall procedure
reported that it had completed. So I deleted that entire directory
tree. I also searched the registry for any reference to lilypond, and
found that the only ones around in the registry pertained to the
software for Denemo and Frescobaldi, so I left the registry alone.

Then I did a fresh installation of lilypond 2.16.2, and attempted
another test.

When I used the command "lilypond --version" the command quickly
returned with the version and license information. I thought that
looked like progress, so I tried to use lilypond to process a file. I
used the command, "lilypond -l DEBUG craptastic.ly in the directory
containing the file craptastic-1.ly. The result I got is described in
the attached file lilypond_debug_log.txt. Notice from the log that the
filename craptastic.ly is actually invalid, but I do not get an error
message about the file not being found.

>From the last line appearing on the debug log, lilypond apparently got
stuck building the font database. I let it run for almost an hour
before I killed it with a ctrl-C. It does not appear to have made any
progress beyond that. This time I don't believe I did anything wrong in
the installation of lilypond, but it still doesn't work for me.

Yours sincerely,
Robert Honoré.

Do you really use version 2.6.0. Than it does not compile with version
2.16.2!

If one changes the first line to
\version "2.16.2"
it will compile without problems.

It usually does once I change the version string. I had sent the one
that worked with my previous installation of lilypond (2.12.3).
Usually, when I do an upgrade, I would change the version string once I
get the error message when I attempt to process it.
That is usually the first hint I get that the syntax I have in my old
*.ly files might need to be checked.

The file I sent (serial-1.ly) is my test file. It has only one line of
random music, so that it serves as the subject of a quick test. My
current problem is that I can't even get lilypond to go to the point
where it tells me that the file was found and it has begun processing,
far less to tell me that the version string is too old (see my previous
post with the command line session log). If I could get lilypond to
tell me that, I would consider it progress.

Yours sincerely,
Robert Honoré.

I can compile it on linux using version 2.16.2
I get a warning about encoding of file:

craptastic-1.ly <0>: warning: non-UTF-8 input

In fact it's:

The other warning is:

warning: cannot find or create new `staff'

you should write

\new Staff

(instead of \new staff)

Finally, you should insert \global inside themeOne.

Can you compile the attached file?

Nesting \absolute in 2.16 (or alternative) for predefined bass line

2013-08-02 Thread Kale Good

Hello,
I'm having a bit of a problem that seems like it could be resolved by
nesting \absolute, but I'm not sure if 2.16 supports it (sure doesn't
seem to, from my tests). I see its in the docs for 2.17, but I was
wondering if there was an alternative in 2.16.2 . Here is what I'm
trying to do.

I've got a bass line that I'm reusing with different arpeggios, but when
placed with certain arpeggios, it seems to be deriving its pitch from
the previous note (which happens to be in the other voice, which is
throwing everything off).

Also, this are two of a series of right hand studies for classical
guitar. I'd like to keep it structured this way so that I can comment on
individual exercises.

Thanks,
Kale

Robert: It seems to me that you are working very hard to outsmart
Lilypond, doing tricks that "should theoretically work if..." some
particular obscure unreliable condition is met.

At the risk of sounding dismissive, I'll say: why not just read the
manual and follow the instructions? They work quite well as printed -
there's no need to resort to "extracurricular tricks" to make sure
Lilypond is working.

One bad part about Lilypond is that you do have to follow the
instructions and intentions of the people who programmed it. When they
say "do it this way", there is nearly always the implication
"... because no other way will work", or at least "no other way gives
any guarantee". Another bad part is simply that Lilypond is quite a
large collection of code; unless you wrote a large chunk of that code
yourself, it's safe to assume that you don't know how it ought to work
except by being told - either by those who *have* written large chunks
of it, or by those who use it on a daily basis and have become very
familiar with it.

Occasionally things do change - make sure you're reading the manuals and
instructions for the Lilypond version you're really using, and not
simply hoping that outdated methods will still (by chance) work.

You have a \relative c'' {...} around both voices so the program is
interpreting your pitches relative to the previous one in the input,
regardless of which voice it is in.

I suggest using a separate \relative c'' {...} around short segments
where it is natural to think of the pitches relative to the previous pitch.
For exercises, maybe you don't want to use \relative at all.

For the baseline I'm pretty sure you would prefer to use absolute pitches,
and if you move the transpose to the definition of "basslineOne"
 basslineOne = \transpose c c' { c4 e g c | b, d g b, }
then LilyPond doesn't interpret pitches as relative.

Hi Rachael

I wonder what's the meaning of the staff lines highlighted in purple...
Also, all the slides in your piece seem non legato, because they are not
slurred. I use to write legato slides as:

c( \glissando d)

But my tablature references are probably very different from yours.

Feel free to share the recording if you have found it, I enjoy fingerstyle

Support for Uke chords?

2013-08-02 Thread Clark Milioti
Greetings,

I just discovered LilyPond. I am blown away by the concept of its
text-based input. Very clever and easy to pick up.

While I intend to read the "learning.pdf" manual this weekend, I was
wondering if anyone can help steer me toward using LilyPond for simple
chord tab charts for the Uke?

My objective -- at least initially -- is to generate simple chord tab
sheets for my uke playing. Like the "popular music" examples provided on
the LilyPond website.

The example demonstrates that LilyPond can produce guitar chord symbols,
but is it capable of doing the same for a standard, c-tuning uke symbols?

Much appreciated!

You should read through chapter 2.4 of the Notation Reference and
specifically this section:

http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/notation/common-notation-for-fretted-strings#predefined-fret-diagrams>
reads:

Fret diagrams for the ukulele are contained in the file
‘predefined-ukulele-fretboards.ly’.

And is followed by an example for Ukulele.

The list of predefined diagrams is in
http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.16/Documentation/notation/predefined-fretboard-diagrams>,
just scroll down to the section about Ukulele.
